(i regret everything) yay, here's part 2 of part 1!

pomni then critiques him for being too afraid to show his raw emotions.

now, this is what i love about pomni and funnybunny's dynamic. yes, ragatha and zooble also criticize jax. but, they criticize him for his external behavior of cruelty. in contrast, pomni criticizes him for his internal behavior. rather than getting mad at him for acting cruel, she nails the target on what he is most insecure about: being openly vulnerable. which is ironic. pomni has only known him for a few weeks, yet due to her emotional intelligence, she has already figured out more of jax's vulnerabilty than the others. this is one of the reasons why i was so interested in pomni and jax's dynamic. after some more bickering, pomni asks a serious question.

"Have you ever thought that this might be what causes people to abstract in the first place?!"

in other words-- she insinuates that people (like jax) locking their emotions is what gets them to abstract. seriously, how fucking perceptive is pomni?! this is when jax SNAPS.

at this point, jax is bewildered.

"What does she know?! How could she be acting like she knows everything?!"

that was my assumption of what jax's internal thoughts were at that moment. my theory? based on the pics above... either with kaufmo or ribbit or both, he avoided them-- either because he didn't know how to help, or because he was too frightened by their unstable, deteriorating mind(s). and his refusal to help them is what ruined his relationship with the other living circus members, since kaufy and ribbit y'know. abstracted. therefore, he started pushing people away, never keeping them too "close for comfort." that way, he wouldn't have to relive the guilt of leaving a close companion. and of course, right after he crashed out, he put on a mask.

seriously, his fake smile gave me chills. it was so unsettling. pomni realizes that she may have crossed a few boundaries, apologizing to him afterwards (give her an award for the amount of emotional maturity she has even with jax's attitude).

jax immediately begins to change the subject, acting like his cocky, laid-back self. another defense mechanism since he hates appearing vulnerable.

but look at pomni's expression. i absolutely adore her character development from pilot to ep 6. pilot pomni would never have understood what jax was truly feeling. she sees through his metaphorical walls, feeling both hurt by his nonchalance and concerned about what he is truly hiding. so, what does she do? she asks the one question that she knows will hit a nerve.

"What would you do if I abstracted tomorrow?"

right after she asks that, look at how his stance changes.

he loses that cocky, confident posture, her question hitting him harder than he wanted. for a few moments, he stays frozen. then, he answers in a low voice.

im going to grab that pistol and pew pew him myself /j

pomni is clearly devastated at what he says. i mean, who wouldn't? she trusted him. she was actually happy to be his friend. and he threw it all away because he was too scared to become close to someone again. pomni turns around, clearly disheartened. jax is discomforted by this, showing a flash of guilt on his face before deflecting immediately.

he deflects because he is uncomfortable at pomni's display of genuine sadness, feeling guilty at his harsh choice of words. not knowing how to approach her, he does the one thing he always does. make a joke. and then they start doing this :D

as much of an ASSHOLE jax was behaving towards pomni, i have to respect him on one thing. he never fights back or shoots her, even when she is punching him. the only times he does grab her is when he is trying to push her away. he refuses to inflict physical harm on pomni other than to defend himself, even attempting to run away at one point.

this shows that he doesn't hate her, unlike what so many fans believe now. despite his cruel words, he isn't willing to hurt her. but, why does pomni want jax to fight back? she wants for him to prove that he doesn't care. this is what i love about her-- even after jax's absolutely SHITTY insults, she still chooses to have a tiny silver of hope for him, that maybe he does care. jax even states so here.

this is the moment where jax completely CRACKS.

this is another reference back to what i said in part 1 of this post. he is stubbornly sticking to his 2-dimensional and black and white view of himself, believing that he is too irredeemable to express even the slightest care or vulnerability for others. if you watch his uh... "villain monologue," we see that his emotional dissonance is much worse than we expected.

"I'm the one who causes pain for fun! If i led you on, it was just to make this part hurt you more."

notice how he starts off his sentence with "i am the one." he places a label on himself, setting a personal expectation or rule to be cruel towards others. also, i don't know if i can explain this clearly, but the way he phrases that quote is so... rigid, sounding like a stiff, villain monologue rather than his usual sharp, laid-back tone. tldr, it sounds something like a scripted villain would say. the quote is grammatically neat, logical, and explanatory-- everything jax isn't. it sounds almost like a speech, as if he is forcing himself to clarify his intentions. let me emphasize that jax is NOT the type to explain himself so directly; he'd rather mock or tease. therefore, that quote he says comes off as something he's saying for effect rather than something he truly means. and then he CUSSES. FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE SHOW.

despite his cruel and sarcastic personality, he NEVER CUSSED. he must've been ABSOLUTELY STRESSED to actually use profanity, there are 3 possible reasons why (i think its all the above). 1) pomni's words hit him harder than he wanted 2) he regrets what he just said to her 3) he regrets acting this vulnerable and out of character he then says this afterwards:

can i just point out how mentally exhausted he looks?! geez he's an absolute jerk but someone give him some hugs anyways. by saying this, jax shows that he recognizes pomni seeing through him better than the others do. his bluntness of the line is used as self-protection, basically forcing her to stop prying. he's afraid of her peeling back the persona he hides behind. it's less about indifference and more about desperation to keep his "walls" intact.

this also sounds more like a plea. it's not that he actually believes there’s “nothing more”, it’s that he doesn’t want her to find what’s truly "wrong with him." OH MY GAWD IM ALMOST DONE

PART 5: RELIVING NIGHTMARES

later in the awards show, we see pomni bumping into ragatha (I LOVE YOU RAGATHA). i remember in the beginning of ep 6, ragatha telling pomni this:

"I-If -- If you ever need to talk to somebody, o-or need help with anything, I'm here."

is this a possible foreshadowing for future episodes, where pomni tells ragatha what happened between her and jax? okay, i'm getting sidetracked AGAIN. anyways, when jax enters the awards show, he tiredly glares to pomni, their argument clearly still in his mind.

and when ragatha and pomni take their seats, pomni IMMEDIATELY looks behind for jax, her eyes full of concern. so to those fans who were saying they "hate eachother," they clearly don't. one fight does NOT mean they despise each other's guts, or that the friendship/ship is dead.

due to tumblr's photo limit, i cant exactly post too much pics of pomni and jax in the awards show, but just remember that pomni kept looking back at him worriedly. SHE STILL CARES FOR YOU IDIOT.

finally, the part i REALLY wanted to talk about. can i just give a HUGE standing ovation to the tadc artists? they absolutely OUTDONE themselves in portraying jax's panic attack.

his expression showing that he's about to cry, the frantic twitching of his foot-- they are ALL such great portrayals to jax's overwhelming anxiety. look at the clip of his panic attack below.

i kid you not i was covering my eyes i did not want to see jax abstract

now, i'm not a professional psychiatrist, or doctor, or psychologist, or ANYTHING. but there are clear obvious signs that he is having a full blown panic attack. 1. rapid heart rate 2. shortness of breath 3. trembling 4. the freaking eye squiggles those are physical symptoms. however, what we should focus more on are his cognitive symptoms. 1. fear of losing control (e.g. looking vulnerable, showing raw emotions) 2. desperate need to escape uncomfortable situations (goose mentioned in one of the cons?? that jax coped by thinking of the circus as a way to escape reality) because pomni challenged his fake persona, his metaphorical walls, her emotional honesty pierced his facade, triggering his defense mechanisms and overwhelming anxiety. he is also having a panic attack because his coping/defense mechanisms are now inactive. he is DESPERATE to convince himself that the circus isn't real, that everything is fine, that this isn't reality. yet, it the cold truth hits him hard. the fight with pomni makes him finally realize that no matter how much he hides it, what he faced back there was real. that's whats making him lose his mind. the clip didn't include it, but he also states the following: (in english dub)

"God you look stupid."

"God, you're an asshole."

jax's insults have ALWAYS been outward. this time, he turns that cruelty inwards. by calling himself stupid/asshole, he's using very similar language he used to tear others down (e.g. ragatha, gangle). the difference? when he does it to others, it's controlled mockery. when he does it to himself, it's him spiraling into descent.

PART 6: CONCLUSION

if i'm judging his aftermath just from these quotes, i can tell he regrets what he's done, whether he admits it or not. and let me just remind you that i am NOT defending jax's actions towards pomni in ANY WAY. he is clearly a troubled person, as gooseworx mentioned, and will need some GOOD development if he ever wants a chance to redeem himself. however, i am in LOVE with jax's complexity this episode. we finally see his reasons why he's so distant to others and why he acts the way he is. he is definitely the most flawed character in tadc, but that doesn't make him any less interesting. really excited to see how he behaves in the last three episodes. (and on a side note, funnybunny is not dead. doomed, but not dead. we see jax clearly regretting, or at least uncomfortable, by what he said to pomni, and pomni still caring for him. their argument seems, at the very least, unfinished. it definitely will be addressed in later episodes. no way! am i doing a longass analysis post even after i got shot 57 times from ep 6?

so most of my socials have been taken over by the mourning over a) funnybunny b) jax having a panic attack hence i'll be discussing those two points here, starting off with an analysis on our beloved jerkass rabbit, jax.

PART 1: LABELS AND ARCHETYPES

i don't think people are understanding how IMPORTANT his archetype monologue was.

he proceeds to tell pomni the following in their bedroom hallway.

"Ragatha's the cheerful one, Gangle's the sad one, Kinger's the crazy one, Zooble's the grumpy one... we all just became archetypes."

which is really funny, considering ragatha, gangle, kinger, and zooble actually acted the opposite of jax's labeled archetypes. ragatha was internally panicking, terrified of the others hating her. gangle was actually happy for the most part, going feral once she had her tommy gun and smiling even after pomni killed her. kinger was LOCKED IN, giving some of the BEST advice to ragatha in the "loser" room. i swear i started tearing up. zooble was empathetic, being able to comfort gangle and explain how they are all humans, even if they're stuck in the circus. this shows how 2-dimensional and black and white jax's perspective can be. look at what he said below.

jax is doing his best to prove that he is "irredeemable". for him, the only way to prove himself right is to make everyone around him suffer. why? so the others could "push" him away and give him the validation or agreement that he's a bad person. unfortunately, he believes that what he is doing is "funny." he doesn't care how harmful his demeanor is towards others. why?????? bc he refuses to stray from the set archetype he has set for himself.

PART 2: MOMENT OF REALIZATION

we can see right off the bat in ep 6, jax and pomni are getting along, chatting and smiling before meeting zooble. i've seen people assume that jax is using pomni to upset ragatha, or intentionally trying to make her worse. but look at ragatha and jax's conversation below.

ragatha: "I-I-I know exactly what you're doing with Pomni, and it'll never work!" jax: "...huh?" ragatha: "You know, getting close with Pomni... to corrupt her?"

look below. he's genuinely confused about what ragatha said.

after jax accidentally shoots himself, he proceeds to shoot ragatha multiple times. he rapidly presses the trigger even after he runs out of bullets.

THIS is the moment we see jax's first vulnerability in ep 6. ragatha hit a nerve. this is when he realizes that he's getting closer to pomni, without him even knowing. and he despises that.

PART 3: SETTING BOUNDARIES

when pomni and jax are walking along the circus, pomni asks him questions about his fear of corn, discovering that he seems to have trypophobia. yet, when pomni says this:

jax immediately diverts the topic. he plants his walls back up, afraid to form a proper connection with pomni. but, does this mean he didn't enjoy their short friendship? no. look at how he and pomni interact together during ep 6.

whether you like funnybunny or not, you have to admit. jax sincerely seemed to enjoy pomni's company. he denies it later, but he was growing a genuine bond with her. i don't think i've ever seen him this content around others. i may be stretching this a bit too far, but he also shows care when pomni goes to catch zooble.

he seems surprised that pomni's this willing to win, even after they just got shot repeatedly by zooble.

and in that short moment, when he realizes he does care, he stares at kaufmo's abstracted door, scowling. and then his eyes dart over to ribbit's door.

jax's face freezes up instantly before he shakes his head, regaining his footing.

in my opinion, this is his "wake up call." he glances at the abstracted members, reminding himself that there's no point in getting closer to pomni. his internal dialogue may have been something like:

"She'll probably abstract in the end, just like the others. Why bother hurting myself all over again?"

now, let's go onto the... "breakup."

PART 4: ESTABLISHING IMMENSE DISTANCE

after jax and pomni win the game, pomni is estatic. and let me just remind you all that pomni is canonically TOUCH-AVERSE. yet what does she do? SHE HUGS JAX. WILLINGLY.

sorry, got a little sidetracked there. back to jax. anyways. look closely at how he reacts to her hug.

for a split second, we see him completely fine with pomni hugging him. he actually has a genuine, faint smile on his face. and then, he panics. he berates himself for growing closer to pomni, despite constantly setting personal reminders to build distance. so, he immediately pushes her off, scowling at her afterwards. look at how he reacts to her hug when he unwillingly realizes that he was fine with it.

in my opinion, his aggravated reaction in that moment isn't because he was mad at pomni, but at himself. jax seems to be criticizing himself internally, like

"Why did I let her grow closer?! That was so stupid of me!"

pomni looks hurt by his reaction, but she waves it off. i mean, it's jax. that reaction was... pretty normal. after a few moments of friendly chatter, pomni playfully declares that it's the "part where one of us betrays the other." as she says this, look at what jax is doing.

HE'S STARING AT THE HAND HE PUSHED HER AWAY WITH. for a few moments, he looks dazed, not registering what pomni said to him. why is he doing that? realistically, it might be because he's... surprised at her sudden hug? maybe contemplating over what he just got himself into? i really don't know. anyways here's the full clip of their... very intense fight.

after pomni jokes about them betraying each other, jax responds nonchalantly.

"Huh? Oh yeah. You can betray me."

pomni is surprised, albeit a bit startled that jax isn't joking along with her like he usually does. and this is when he starts acting absolutely SHITTY. when pomni admits that she doesn't want to shoot jax, he calls her lame, commenting how he "thought she was cool." and when pomni proposes that they could just win together as a team, what does the jerkass rabbit say?

"We're not a team, c'mon!"

this is the beginning of his deflection, where he downplays their growing bond and smashes it to the floor to smithereens. jax proceeds to say that instead of them growing closer, it was merely him "entertaining her because he thought it was funny." he then continuously insists for pomni to shoot him.

pomni pulling the trigger provides jax with twisted reassurance, serving as a confirmation for him to believe that pomni won't breach the closeness he fears. pomni is stunned by what he's requesting. confused, she asks:

"If I shoot you right now, are we still gonna be friends afterwards?"

and then, jax acts like an even BIGGER SHIT.

at this point, jax is directly expressing his regret for growing too close with pomni. this isn't because he was merely "using her" or "playing around with her." he's pushing her away because he wants to spare himself from the possible grief of losing her, especially after what happened to ribbit. at this point, pomni is rightfully PISSED. look at what she says:

"You're -- you're not gonna look me in the eye and tell me nothing we've been doing together meant anything to you, because I know that's not true!"

"Oh my god, can you take this seriously?! Can you take anything seriously?!"

when jax tries to joke, teasing that he doesn't have to take her seriously, she argues back:

pomni is rightfully mad. after finally getting the chance to grow closer to jax, even when she was distrustful of him in the past, he's pushing her away? that doesn't sit right with her (which is absolutely VALID). she's mad that when she actually started growing attached to him, HE backtracked and pushed her away. .

i love how everyone was lowkey just wrong about the new tadc episode. The people who were thinking Jax manipulated Pomni/is rubbing off on her? WRONG. The people who thought that was Pomni letting loose and Jax and Pomni were enabling each other? WRONG. The people who thought FunBun was going to be doomed? WRONG. It has never been stronger baby. Instead of that we got Pomni caring so much about Jax to the point where she cares more about him and his wellbeing than he does. I want to cry.

That was such a ride😭 we got FunBun divorce scene and it was genuinely the most painful thing to watch ever. Thank you Gooseworx for destroying my life 🫶
