Yeongi and Beomseok - Narrative foils
Both kids suffer violence at the hands of their adoptive guardians (Gilsu chokes Yeongi, Beomseok's dad beats him), but one externalizes that violence while the other tries to break the cycle.

Both have one elder who tries to stand between that violence (Beomseok has the secretary, Yeongi has Seokdae), but it's not enough because the main power lies with the dad/Gilsu.

These evil 'father' figures use the most vulnerable person in the kids' life to assert control over them and keep them in line. The dad uses Suho to control Beomseok, Gilsu uses Seongchan to control Yeongi.

But where Yeongi fights back against the person responsible for her misery, Beomseok doesn't and instead chooses to harm the people who care for him. The easier victims.

Both latch onto Sieun at the start (& Suho) & that's where we see Beomseok's dislike for Yeongi for the first time. Sieun acts as a motherly figure to both & the second Beomseok feels that attention shift to another kid, he gets angry. A deadly form of one sided sibling rivalry.

The way Yeongi and Beomseok could've easily switched places. Yeongi could've turned evil while Beomseok could've tried to break the cycle. But here we are. Beomseok, who refuses to take accountability & transfers all blame to Yeongi, who was never at fault but still ended up internalising that guilt, her home ripped away from her due to someone else. And she gets no apology for being kidnapped, for being put in a room full of hostile boys because she is the easier victim.

That's why Beomseok hates Yeongi (apart from the misogyny). Because he sees a kid just like him, a kid who breaks away from the violence he is still stuck in, being tormented by his 'Gilsu' while she is free. But she isn't & he isn't, none of them will be until Suho is okay and Beomseok learns to take accountability for his own actions.
#weak hero meta#good observation#I think Beomseok felt inferior to her because she was brave enough to take a stand#and projected that onto Suho and Sieun#i miss yeongi 🥲#like is she still out there blaming herself
