i like to say that kpop idols are like disneyland face characters. you could totally ask Aladdin when he was going to marry Jasmine and he would tell you, because that's part of their story. but that's not really part of a kpop idol's story.

i guess you could think about it like asking fuckin. kylo ren when he was going to marry general hux... they're not romantic in the story and you would probably get a similar answer 🤣

it's rough because the line is intentionally blurred. "shippy" fan service is really popular lately. both ateez and stray kids have done content styled after dating shows... i can see why this fan thought this would be an appropriate and fun question to ask mingi. i'm glad he bluntly set a boundary here and i hope everyone respects it going forward.

i think my advice to that fan, and to other fans who struggle to see where the line is, would be this: if you're not sure whether someone would be appropriate to say to an idol (or any public figure), don't say it!

i'm making this post to get this off my chest and also in the hopes that someone who needs to hear this might see it.

and also. it is fine to ship idols. there is nothing wrong with thinking that mingi and yunho are cute together. there's nothing wrong with drawing or writing ship content about them.

the mistake here was bringing it to mingi himself. it's not for him!

god sometimes I just look at Shen Yuan and Binghe and it's just like. it really is no fucking wonder those two are the joint demon lord and prince concubine of communication issues. one of them is Abandonment Issues Georg who can only build relationships through seventeen layers of meta-level planning and intentional manipulation (alongside his trusty overpowered weapon Borderline Personality Disorder Sword) and the other is a fuckass irony-poisoned pretentious millennial with debilitating comphet and a god in his head that will kill him instantly if he explains 50% of his reasoning for anything ever.

for anyone too young to know this: watching The Truman Show is a vastly different experience now, compared to how it was before youtube and social media influencers became normal

before it was like, "what a horrifying thing to do to a human being! to take away their autonomy and privacy, all for the sake of profits! to create fake scenarios for them to react to, just to retain viewership! to ruin their happiness just so some corporate entity could harvest money from their very humanity! how could anyone do something so evil?"

and now it's like, "ah, yeah. this is still deeply fucked up, but it's pretty much what every influencer has been doing to their kids for a decade now. probably bad that we've normalized this experience"

languages that don't distinguish between formal and informal you are missing out on so much petty drama. my grandparents have two neighbours who once got into a huge fight over something honestly pretty trivial, so neighbour A said he was going to revoke neighbour B's du (informal you) privileges. neighbour B was like "okay but can i use du one last time?" and neighbour A was like "yeah go ahead", and neighbour B said "du arschloch" (you asshole). incredible.
