benjy-whoisleft:
Benjy wasn’t feeling great, but he’d definitely walked away from these sorts of things in far worse shape. Some he limped away from. Others he was dragged out of. All things considered, some rib pain and a few scrapes wasn’t anything other than deeply uncomfortable. It wouldn’t serve him well next time he had to be out for the Order which was how he justified coming here instead of St. Mungo’s.
Far more trouble than it was worth, that. Wouldn’t be aided by the fact he’d definitely insulted one of the senior healers the other day.
His luck wasn’t much better here, as it turned out. He spotted Emmeline pretty immediately, and made an abrupt turn up the stairs to try and find anyone else who could help. It wasn’t that complicated, and he’d rather go with less formally skilled than have to swallow his pride and go to her. It pained him enough to admit she was his best option, let alone act on it. He could just go home and wait this out and—
Benjy took a deep breath, preparing to sneak out and was met by the sharp stabbing pain again. Fine. It wasn’t that big of a deal. He could let himself believe that she wouldn’t make it one if it got him through that door.
It almost did, dragging his feet the whole way, and he knocked twice on the doorframe right as she looked up. He slipped his hands into his jacket pockets, pressing on his ribs with one in a way that made the pain more constant but more manageable than every single breath setting it off.
“I was looking for you,” he said. Anyone but her. Semantics. “I wound up on the wrong side of a blasting spell tonight, and I at least bruised some ribs. Last time, I tried to fix something like that, I wound up dislocating one completely, so if you wouldn’t mind…” Maybe she wouldn’t make him ask. He almost left it there too before remembering, “Oh, and I fell on a pipe or something, and I want to make sure I don’t need anything more than some antiseptic for that. I can deal with the rest.”

“You were looking for me?” Emmeline repeated, not quite mocking but definitely sarcastic. She’d bet money she didn’t have that Benjy Fenwick liked to avoid her almost as much as she liked to avoid him. She wasn’t sure if she rubbed him the wrong way the same way he did her, but he’d certainly never tried to be her friend, and Emmeline liked it that way.
Then again, they were on the same side, now. Two members of the same organization, fighting the same enemy, and the enemy of your enemy was supposed to be your friend, so maybe Emmeline could be civil. Maybe. She definitely should be, but she wasn’t sure if she really wanted to be, especially after several excruciating hours of studying occlumency. But, she promised herself in that moment that she would try, for the sake of her spot in the Order, which she was desperately trying to turn into a family.
Emmeline’s resolve was tested as soon as Benjy continued rambling. Of course he wanted her help. They weren’t even friends and here he was trying to take advantage of her training because… what? They were both members of the same secret organization? What had been enough of a reason for her to resolve to be polite was, apparently, not enough of a reason for him to expect free medical care. She had to fight hard not to roll her eyes and gritted her teeth. If he was injured doing Order work, she had a responsibility to the group to treat him, even if he was Benjy Fenwick.
Emmeline stretched her face into something that was supposed to be a grin, but might just as easily have been a grimace. “Sure, just hop on the table. Do you need help getting your shirt off?” Please, she thought, please let him say no.

Emmeline Vance was someone who worked hard to keep up appearances. She wasn’t entirely sure where it came from, perhaps her Obaasan’s teaching about Japanese culture, or maybe it was simply the product of growing up in a home that refused to break cleanly. Either way, Emmeline didn’t spend a lot of time focusing on why she was the way she was, it was far too time consuming simply being that way. She was always going, and these days she couldn’t quite shake the feeling that if she ever stopped, she might not start again.
So today, instead of sleeping in preparation for her night shift at St. Mungo’s, she was at the Order headquarters, with her nose buried in a book on occlumency. Ever the Ravenclaw, Emmeline was forever trying to teach herself something, always hungry for more learning. Recently, this hunger was coming out in the form of an obsession with occlumency. The idea of ligillimens was deeply unsettling to Emmeline, she preferred for her private thoughts to stay private, and she was determined to protect herself against it. The only problem was, no matter how smart Emmeline was, and she was incredibly intelligent, she couldn’t seem to master teaching herself things.
As a result, Emmeline was already not in the best of moods when she heard shuffling and looked up to see Benjy Fenwick in the doorway. Normally, Emmeline would be thrilled to see a fellow Ravenclaw, but Benjy was the distinct exception to this rule. The truth of the matter was, Benjy thoroughly irritated Emmeline, a fact that, in and of, itself irritated her. He was just so muggleborn, embracing his new life and his heritage with both hands in a way that Emmeline never seemed to manage. So while someone, really anyone, else might have been a welcome distraction, Benjy turned Emmeline’s already frustrated mood decidedly sour.
“Do you need something?” she asked, more snappish than she normally liked to be.

open starter
Today, Emmeline had a rare day off, which meant that today, Emmeline was restless. It made her miss the self-contained world of Hogwarts, where down time could be spent in the courtyard, or the common room, always surrounded by people and never alone with your thoughts. These days it was far too easy for Emmeline to find herself alone with her thoughts, which was her least favorite place to be. So instead of rattling around her flat with only Ratto to talk to, Emmeline was wandering Diagon Alley, hoping to run into someone she knew.
She’d started out her day at the Leaky Cauldron, nursing a cup of lukewarm coffee on the off chance that one of her fellow trainee healers would have the same idea, but she’d struck out. Next she’d loitered in Quality Quidditch Supplies just in case she’d run into any former teammates, but she’d had no luck there either. Flourish and Blotts was usually a safe bet for a Ravenclaw or two, but it had been deserted. Emmeline was about to call it quits and drop in on Obaasan when she finally spotted a familiar silhouette on the other side of the street.
Quickly, Emmeline crossed the street and fell into step next to them. “Fancy seeing you here, what are you up to today?”

Emmeline Vance was tired. Of course, this was not unusual, these days it seemed like tired was Emmeline’s default setting. Between starting work for the Order and her healer training there just weren’t enough hours in the day, and Emmeline still had to squeeze in some social time to keep herself from going crazy. She figured it was just the way she was wired, some people wound down with quiet alone time, Emmeline wound down surrounded by people. So even though she was tired, she wasn’t ready to go back to her flat. Instead, she was sitting in a little pub nursing a glass of cheap fire whiskey.
Usually, Emmeline liked to be in the thick of things, surrounded by people, but tonight she was mostly people watching. Sometimes she liked to just sit and observe the people around her, making up stories about them. Those people were on an awkward first date, that one was drinking away a breakup. These days, she liked to think of it as practice for the Order, honing her knack for reading a room, a person. She liked to think of her little talent as something she could use to make her place in the group. Still, people watching was only interesting for a finite amount of time.
So when Emma Vanity dropped into the seat next to her, Emmeline smiled. She knew that Emma was a difficult person for most people, but difficult people were Emmeline’s specialty. For her part, Emmeline had never had trouble getting along with Emma. True, she could be blunt and demanding but that was easy to deal with.
“Coffee, yes. Decent? I doubt it would be to your tastes.” Emmeline shrugged and swirled her glass. She’d had the coffee before herself, but she’d drink coffee in any state.

(fill up my) Cup season || open
If you had asked six-year-old Emma Esmé Vanity what she wanted to be when she grew up, she would tell you: it was her greatest dream to work for the Ministry of Magic, in the Department of Games and Sports just like her father, during a year when the Quidditch World Cup was being held so she could be as involved as possible.
If you asked Emma Vanity the same question today?
She would not answer at all – because it was two in the morning; because she’d only just left work; because stress was the only thing buzzing in the hollow spaces between her tired bones and her frayed nerves.
Not that she couldn’t do the job. Not that she didn’t want to do the job. Every moment she spent working lately—which was most of them, and certainly more than she spent sleeping—was invigorating, like a shot of adrenaline straight to the chest cavity.
It was in the moments like this one—perched on a bar stool, ordering a drink she didn’t want at a pub she didn’t like, because she knew she’d have to be back in the office in a few hours anyway—that it all caught up to her.
The late nights, the burnout, the creeping-closer-deadline of the Cup. All of it. When Emma was too tired to remind herself how much she loved it, the stumble in momentum left her dazed and tense. Like a shark; she just had to keep swimming. Things like rest and relaxation and the rigid bedtime and workout routine she’d kept herself on since she was twelve? Those were things bookmarked for September, after the Cup was a rousing success – after she was blinded by her bright, bright future instead of the floater-spots caused by her eyes trying to sink shut.
The bartender dropped off Emma’s cocktail with precisely zero fanfare, and walked away like he was on a mission. She took a bracing sip, pressing her lips together in protest of the aftertaste; whatever was happening here, it wasn’t mixed well enough to be called a real martini.
Emma was vaguely aware of someone existing a couple stools down.
In that moment, the only thing she hated more than the idea of forcing small talk with someone beneath her was the idea that she was in danger of falling asleep here, on this horrible, sticky stool.
“What,” she asked. “Is the over/under bet that they serve a decent coffee here?”

Emmeline Vance; the black bear patronus
The formidable form of the black bear is often enough to scare away even the bravest of explorers, not to mention Dementors! Often mistaken as a deadly predator, the black bear mostly feasts on berries, grasses, and roots complemented with fish and carrion. This is often how people see you - a fierce opponent who will protect yourself and those close to you but who has a softer side hidden away from the world. Black bears are known for their adaptability, and this is often seen in how resourceful you can be. No matter the situation you find yourself in, when you come to call upon your Patronus, the black bear will be fully prepared to fight in your corner. [source]
