I think one of the reasons why dgm has impacted us still following this series after years of hiatus and that marginalized people gravitate towards this story that it really gets you. It really gets it what it is like to inherit unwanted legacy, to bear the burden of the actions of those who are long dead, to struggle against overwhelming forces in an unforgiving and uncaring world, how past traumas can still haunt the present and influence the future, how something even as pure as love can turn into something twisted and hurt you without even intending. The series is not a perfect piece by any means, but Hoshino ingeniously touched upon these sentiments and as the story went on learned to deliver them better each time. The world she forms is unfair and uncaring, yet these exact qualities make the reader feel validated and understood, and at times that is more than enough to keep walking.
