I was asked to tell more about the holidays in my legacy gameplay, so here is a super long and detailed post on the subject! 😊

How I use holidays in my game

I used to hate the holidays, cos I saw them as something my sims had to participate in and there was always so much pressure to complete all the traditions! But then I cracked it...

Holidays are a great way to add objectives to gameplay! When every day is some kind of a holiday with its own theme, there's always something for my sims to do.

I tick the "day off" box only if the holiday is a major one or the traditions would feel too rushed if my sim worked on the same day.

I try to have a lot of outdoor/traveling holidays in the spring and summer, and more home lot based holidays in the autumn and winter.

For some holidays, I add a diverse set of traditions and then choose only one or two to complete every sim year.

Sometimes my sims are just too busy with other things in life to participate at all. The No more "awful holiday" sad moodlet mod (linked below) is super useful because it completely takes the pressure off of completing holiday traditions!

It's very refreshing to use custom icons for the holidays, it matters more than you'd think! I use the More selectable icons mod (linked below) for this feature.

More holiday ideas

If you want to create your own holidays, but struggle with coming up with ideas, here are some things I always consider when I create holidays.

Can you match a world with a season? Summer holidays in Sulani, winter holidays in Mt. Komorebi, etc.

Alternatively, have a summer holiday in Sulani when it's winter elsewhere, a winter holiday in Mt. Komorebi when it's summer elsewhere, etc.

What if you took the default holidays and placed them in a different season? Celebrate Winterfest on the beach in the summer!

Can you match a world with a theme? Nature holidays in Granite Falls, city holidays in San Myshuno, etc.

Think of a simple theme for your holiday (games, sports, food, animals, books, etc.) and choose traditions based on that.

Create a holiday that requires your sim to travel from world to world to complete all the traditions.

Have a 3 day holiday for a vacation trip, with different traditions to complete each day.

Create holidays for specific life stages. What would a teen or an elder sim do for their holiday?

Create a holiday for each occult type. How would a Spellcaster spend their holiday?

Can you think of a way to combine holidays and clubs?

Put two really different holidays right next to each other so you have lots of variety in gameplay.

If you're playing a legacy, create a holiday for each heir sim based on their personality, and have their offspring celebrate these holidays to honor them.

Research real life holidays that are celebrated around the world to find new ideas.

BEWARE of Residential Rentals!

I went to place a lot yesterday and my entire savefile suddenly corrupted. I realized it was corrupted because after I placed any lot, all of the other lots in my game reset to the original version of them. They all looked fine from world mode, but once loaded into any lot the issue persisted. Read more about these issue here.

I rolled back the save and it was fine so I decided to try and remove the entire pack and see what would happen. After removing the pack, I could place new lots and the game was fine. Which meant for me the issue is FOR RENT.

I was nowhere near the limit of residential rental lots nor did I use any cheats to have more than six units per lot. I was not placing a residential lot when it corrupted. So far it seems fine to add the pack back and just avoid the lot type.

TLDR: Removing FOR RENT prevented my savefile from corrupting when placing new lots. The steps I used to stabilize my savefile are below.

Steps to remove For Rent:

1. Remove savefiles and mods. Repair the Game. 2. Rollback to a stable version of your savefile. And repair the game again. 3. Evict families and convert Residential Rentals to Residentals. *Tag all units as one. Simmers report that lots can corrupt otherwise.* 4. Use this to load the game without For Rent. 5. Follow this if you end up with two different Tomarang Worlds when you load the pack back into the game. I did. 6. Replace all of your household outfits that got messed up. otherwise some sims will be nakie.

Tips:

Backups: Helps if you have backups of your households and lots in your trayfiles. Fixing outfits: If you don't care about relationships you can delete and replace or use MCCC to copy and paste the outfits back on the sim. Or if you have a dresser file, run that for new outfits.

This has happened to me a few times, but this was the first time I decided to see if I could role back the game, avoid the corruption, and restore my savefile.

UPDATE: 3/18/2025 | 2:00pm

I noticed today that I can no longer load into units that used to be residential rentals. I’m going to roll back again and evict households, and then convert the units to residential BEFORE removing For Rent.

Additionally, I am seeing that people recommend converting all the units back to one, before switching a lot from a residential rental to a rental.

I’ll report back. Stay tuned!

See updated steps above. Changing how and when I remove the residential rentals seems to have prevented the individual lots from corrupting. While testing I placed new builds, and loaded into various lots, opened and closed the game. So far things seem fine.

Things I will be doing moving forward.

Only play and place households in a few worlds.

Having less townies.

And following other guidelines that @rebouks shared here regarding lag because they help keep the savefile smaller.

[Tips & Hints]

Open the awkwardwhims psd collection file in Photoshop, then drag & drop the folder or group of templates onto your image.

The photo album template was inspired by @folkbreeze (definitely check out their resources, they're all so nice!) & other various examples I saw online.

Resize the template by selecting the folder as a whole; resizing individual layers may makes things unaligned.

Feel free to change background colors/fonts/etc as much as you want.

The text message template has 3 styles: sender, green receiver & blue receiver. There are also reaction icons & a separate reaction bar.

For the to-do list template I didn't include every aspiration icon (I was trying to keep this file as small as possible) but you can download this pack by @deathbypufferfish that has all the aspiration icons you'll need. However, it may be missing some of the newer aspiratons.

When adding photos (album cover/recent photos/etc) use a clipping mask.

The weather template includes all the different weather icons, so be sure to hide/unhide the one that applies.

For the new transaction template, make sure to only change the number of the price otherwise the Simoleon symbol will get changed to Times New Roman.

The notification message template is for life events, bad events & default game notifications (ie: legacy player, etc).

Apartment Hall Overrides - Download

Hello! So, we agree that a significant number of the apartment halls are a travesty, right? They're unfinished, don't make any sense, etc? Cool, so I made overrides to help fix this!

I wanted to keep everything base game/City Living compatible so I only used in game assets from those two BUT you can absolutely change out the texture file and make it anything you want, for your personal use. If you want to make your own version of this and make it available for download, please create your own new files but, no link backs or anything is necessary. Shout outs and links are always appreciated though. At the bottom of the post is a link to a tutorial on how to make your own, as well as the wall and floor names for the ones I made overrides for to help make things easier for you.

First up, Alto Tower. Alto Tower is one of the tallest buildings in all of San Myshuno with two HUGE apartments that have windows all around and you want me to believe THIS is what a hallway would look like in that kind of building????

And that some random storage room would be bright green????

Absolutely not. I've replaced the wall on both of these.

You can download the overrides here. There are two package files per override. One is an override, meaning everywhere the original dark blue is being used, it will now be this paneled wall. The second file adds the dark blue back as a new additional swatch so that you can go around and paint any wall back to the dark blue you intended it to be elsewhere. In other words, if you want to override the original color and also regain the original swatch for use elsewhere, you need both files. This is true of every wall and floor override I've created here.

Next up: Chic Street Apartments

I understand these apartments are meant to be cheaper starter apartments BUT they're in a nice building in the trendy FASHION District. I've changed the whole vibe of this one. The original look:

I actually think Culpepper House has one of the least offensive hallways. I went ahead and just picked a dirty swatch to match some of the apartments a bit more.

Jasmine Suites. This place is UNFINISHED and you can't convince me otherwise. The only reason I didn't override the floor is because it's the DEFAULT CONCRETE floor. It's used in waaaay too many other places. At least the wall isn't as offensively bright now.

Landgraab Towers. I missed taking a proper before picture. You can kinda see the ugly brown wall here:

And then I did get a picture showing the floor during testing. I only just yesterday realized there's actually two carpet prints being used in this foyer:

This is Landgraab Tower. The Feng's live here. This is supposed to be luxury and eleganzaaaa??? Here's the after:

You can download here. Floor 1 is the plain carpet, floor 2 is the patterned carpet.

Spire Tower. This is ANOTHER ONE that uses the friggin cement flooring so I've only changed the wall here. The before isn't the worst but it doesn't exactly scream "three story condo at the top of a tower in expensive ass Uptown." Hopefully my override feels closer to that. Again, I was just working with Base Game and City Living though so please don't tell me there are better options in other expansions.

Paired with TOOL and clever use of rugs and other items, you can really overhaul these halls to be so much better. For instance, here's the Jasmine Suites hall again, in its original state:

And here it is with my wall override, using pierisim rugs that look like tiles to cover the whole floor, and then regular rugs, new lights, new doors, and better decor:

If you find any issues, please let me know! These will conflict with any files that override the same swatches. If you use littlemssam's elevator mod, I am unsure if the elevator override will cause problems, I don't use that mod. Just keep that in mind and remove if it does conflict.

just a small set of recolors and mini mesh edits that i threw together for my sunday save 📹

∴  base game compatible, 8 items in 26 swatches that i’ve been using for my personal recolors lately! 7 items are shown, but i’ve also included the child version of the oversized polo, i was just too lazy to re-download child cas poses 😅
