honestly, i think my biggest regret in life will be throwing away majority of my undergrad notebooks/notes/handouts after graduating and moving out. i know at the time i had to do it, but now (from the prespective of financial semi-stability) i'm really sad i got rid of them instead of buying more storage space.

i think you should be allowed to cite scholars who are bad people but only if you put the word (oof) or (yikes) after their name
like Parker (yikes, 1989) or Obbink (big oof, 2007)

i'm starting to realise how much micromanagement i've had up to this point in academia/work and how much i need to train myself out of this for the phd.
my first thought when doing things like arranging interviews, registering for conferences, etc. is to get my supervisor's approval (partly because we're both part of one project). but my super isn't very involved, so i'm coming to terms with the fact that this is my own project and i can make the decisions

sometimes I see people doing research on really cool things, like very specific bits of queer history, or some particular period in history of medicine, and I wish I had gone into a more interesting field of history/social sciences, but I guess there's maybe time for that in the future?

Tag yourself : Arabic pet names edition
Based on your month of birth, which Arabic pet names would you use?
January: عيني [ʿainī]; my eye
People born in January  tend to be smart, charismatic independent and analytical. They’re attentive to details and cautious. Because of that, “my eye” seems fitting since they place a lot of importance on their eyes to be able to study and analyze the different situations. An alternative nickname would be نور عيني  [Nūr ʿainī] which translates to the “light of my eyes”.
February: روحي [Rūḥī]; my soul
People born in February tend to be honest, and they’re never ashamed to express themselves or tell the truth. They’re also original, creative, and love to embrace who they are. They’re also very sweet and caring. Their soul is original and one of a kind, since they value their authenticity and their uniqueness, their loved one is as important to them as their soul.
March: حياتي [Ḥayatī]; my life
People born in March tend to be intuitive, goal oriented and enthusiastic about life. They have the ability to adapt in every situation which makes them very smart and successful. They love life, and enjoy living every aspect of it, this explains why they would also see the person that they love as someone who is as precious and as important to them as life itself.
April: قلبي  [Qalbī] ; my heart
They are smart, brave, bold, creative and kind. April-born people tend to be a bit more introverted than extroverted. They’re also too critical towards themselves and others and they strive for perfection in anything they do. They’re also passionate, adventurous and very curious. Because they place a lot of importance to their emotions, “my heart” would be a fitting pet name for April born folks to use.
May: مُلهمي / ملهمتي [Mulhimī (m) / Mulhimatī (f)]; my muse
People born in May tend to be hardworking, adventurous, emotional. A romantic at heart with a great appreciation of art. They love expressing themselves, whether it’s using a pen and paper (to write) , a canvas to draw or any other medium to express themselves. This helps us understand the importance of their source of inspiration (muse) and why they would use this pet name to refer to their loved one.
June: يا عسل* [yāʿasal]; ō, honey
People born in June are considered social butterflies because they are charismatic and talented! They are very intelligent, are extremely inquisitive and have a childlike nature. June borns are great communicators and can easily draw everyone’s attention. Since they’re good with words, I think that a cute nickname such “honey” would suit their personality. Alternatively they might say يا حلو, which is the equivalent to “sweetie”.
July: حبي [Ḥubbī]; my love
July born people are optimistic, charming and very generous. Although they’re sensitive and have a gentle heart, but they have excellent self-control. They’re also goal oriented and they have excellent work ethic. They care a great deal about the ones close to them and place family above everything. For that reason, “love” isn’t just a simple word to them because they love with all their hearts.
August: يا قمري *[Yā qamarī]; ō, my moon
People born in August tend to be very strong, either physically or mentally. They’re also very smart, charismatic, loyal and they’re proud of who they are. People admire them because of their charisma and their intelligence and they have good leadership skills. They also enjoy receiving attention, just like the moon catches everyone’s eyes during a dark night, so does their loved one who has stolen their heart.
September: توأم روحي [Tawʾam rūḥī]; my soulmate
People who are born in September are open minded and intelligent. They’re quite detail oriented and perfectionists which means that they tend to overthink everything. Because they tend to get bored easily, they love adventure and they have an appreciation for beauty. However, they prefer sharing their happiness with someone important to them rather than enjoying things on their own; which is why the very concept of a “soulmate” has a special significance to them.
October: يا بلسمي [Yā balsamī]; my cure
The word بلسم is used to describe something that heals you, that cures you from ache or pain. October born people are emotionally intelligent and very smart. They’re quite romantic, charming and they have a pleasant personality. They tend to be calm and love to enjoy their life to the fullest but at the same time they prefer to avoid conflict which is why a tender word that is linked with healing is their choice when referring to the person they love.
November: *يا غالي / يا غالية [Yā ġālī / Yā ġāliya]; my precious one
November born are talented, fearless, and a bit short tempered. They can be social but they are wary of who they let in their circle. They can have many acquaintances but a handful of close friends. They tend to guard everything that is close to them and cherish their privacy. Because of that, the people who do get into their circle are very precious to them, which explains the choice of this pet name.
December: كنزي [Kanzī]; my treasure
December born people are enthusiastic, and active –they value their freedom a lot. They can be quite competitive and impatient at times but they’re also strong willed, trustworthy and very loyal to their partner and they put all their efforts into making this a success. This nickname shows us just how much they “treasure” their partner and value their relationship.
Note :the words that have a start next to them are more used in dialects, the rest are in MSA. Many of the words in MSA can also be used in different dialects but keep in mind that the pronunciation might vary depending on the dialect.

some helpful links
for surviving grad school in the life sciences*
*that I’ve personally used and loved, or have heard good things about. This definitely is not meant to be an all-inclusive masterlist created by an omniscient being though not from lack of trying.
Research/Data Analysis
GraphPad Prism - for all your graphing needs! I use this program exclusively for all my data visualizing, and it can also do some basic statistics. It does cost $$, but your institution or lab may already have a subscription.
NIH ImageJ - free image analysis software (eg. cell counting, quantifying western band intensity, etc), and since it’s open source, there are lots of free plug-ins available to download.
R Studio / R Project - free statistical software. It’ll take some time learning (via tutorials or someone showing you), but it’s a pretty awesome program. I don’t personally use it for stats, but I know many colleagues who do.
Dilution Calculator (C1V1=C2V2) and Molarity Calculator and Outlier test - great for double-checking your math (or doing all the work for you if you’re like me and math is just not your brain’s jam).
IHC World - the motherload of everything IHC or antibody-related, including protocols
BioNumbers - helpful repository of any number you may need for biology-related research (eg. how much DNA or RNA is in a mammalian cell)
Statistics for Biologists - collection of articles about statistical issues that biologists should be aware of
Writing
Mendeley Citation Manager - a (free!) way to save and organize papers using a browser plug-in, along with a Word doc plug-in so you can insert in-text citations and automatically build a reference page when writing.
Academic Writing Resource - provides the “nuts and bolts” for academic writing, from the University of Manchester
Organizing academic research papers - comprehensive guide on organizing and writing academic research papers from Sacred Heart University
Guide on using Word for writing a Dissertation - such as formatting tips, from University of Michigan
Dissertation templates - from Duke University, available for Word and LaTex (note that every graduate program may have different requirements for formatting, so please only use this resource as an example and/or helpful guide)
PubMed Journal Finder - helps you find the most appropriate journal (from PubMed) to publish your paper in (or find new journals related to your research to check out)
BioRender - If you’re a biologist, this thing is a lifesaver when it comes to creating figures/schematics for papers and presentations. Limited access is free to students for private use (like class presentations).
LaTex - a document preparation program that’s very science-friendly. I’ve never used it, but I wish I did after hearing how much easier it would’ve made things.
Organization
Box Sync or Dropbox - to easily share files between computers (like protocols with everyone in the lab, or editing manuscripts with multiple authors). I personally like Dropbox better and am willing to pay for more space (Box Sync sometimes has delays in syncing).
Google calendars, or some sort of electronic calendar - for scheduling your day, because grad school can get hectic!
Bear - a note-taking app for Macs and other Apple products. I don’t personally use it (I like physical notes), but my old lab mate uses it to keep track of all the notes during his meetings with our previous PI. He’s been using it for years and says it works really well.
Labstep - cloud-based documentation for the entire lab–including notebooks, inventories, data collection and downstream analyses, etc. I personally never used it but it sounds amazing, and would streamline so many aspects in lab. Good to keep in mind for anyone planning on becoming a PI!
Career Development
LinkedIn - if you haven’t already, create an account (even as a student!) This is a great and common way to keep in touch with your network, look for and apply to jobs, and get noticed by companies.
Research Gate - like LinkedIn but for researchers. Their best feature imo is their forum, where users ask research-related questions that the community of scientists help answer.
NIH Office of Intramural Training and Education (OITE) - they regularly host free and open-to-the-public webinars on career development for science and health majors (college and grad school-level)

i had a meeting with a careers adviser last week to go over my cv and letter for phd, and helping with my pitch he referred to me as a “political scientist” and i’m like...

I'm in the same boat right now. FIngers crossed, you can do it!
writing a PhD proposal is such a different level of stressful I can’t. It only has to be 3-5 pages, but these 3-5 pages and an interview will decide my life for the next four years

today’s a “this is bullshit” kind of day, as I discover I’m apparently unable to write a decent research proposal.

although i should also call mum, and i really wanted to go for a walk (how often do you get 20 degrees in scotland??? how??? not very.) but i guess i can’t have everything...
I had a supremely unproductive day yesterday, and today doesn’t seem much better + I have D&D in the evening so that’s about 4hrs out of my life, so I’m gonna make a deal. If I get a decent chunk of the actual proposal written, and finish editing either CV or the cover letter, I can get a new binder and give myself some time to read a book.
