About Sentry, Void and what they're really like
Sentry, Void and Bob are all the same, they have the same traumas, fears, self-doubts and insecurities, because they are one person. The only difference is that Sentry has powers (he is Bob’s mania; mania – feeling that you can do anything; this feeling + serum = Sentry, who bc of the serum actually can do anything. That’s the only thing he’s confident in – his invincibility, his superpowers, that will allow him to do whatever he wants, because that’s what he is, but that’s it (!), because he’s still Bob). And then there is Void, who’s about absolute loneliness and hopelessness.
Some may be confused by the way they talk about each other, as if they’re separate personalities (for example, Bob calling Void "it", Sentry saying to Val "it's not Robert you need to be afraid of" and when John calls him Bobby, corrects him by saying "you can call me Sentry", Bob not remembering anything (at first) after Sentry or Void take over, or how Void was talking to Bob at the end), SO I’m adding what i wrote in other posts here:
THEY separate themselves from each other, of course they do, they are not his normal self, they are his mental disorder.
A bit more about it:
Bob has mental illnesses inherited from his mother and his own (as a result of a terrible life). The main one is bipolar, almost certainly passed down from his mom.
After he was injected with the serum it was like his bipolar was pumped with the strongest steroids and now his mental illness exists beyond human levels, as Sentry and Void (Mel talked about this, that give a serum to someone like Bob and who knows what will happen. Well now we know).
Moving on to the next one:
the key moment that a lot of people don’t seem to understand: they have never known love or care, never had a single person who was even a little worried about them or genuinely cared for them. They have zero confidence that anyone will ever need them, even more than that, they are sure of the opposite. They are very traumatized, all of them, they suffer exactly the same, because they are one.
I didn't think it was necessary to write about it because it's literally shown in every scene, but I'm shocked at how many people didn't get it at all, so.
With Bob himself, I think it's all clear to everyone, thankfully.
About Void:
He repeats throughout the movie that they (Bob/Sentry/Void) will always be alone, he says this to both Bob and Yelena (even though she hugs Bob at this moment, and yet)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He also says "you think they care about you? you don’t matter to anyone" and "the most shameful thing of all is thinking you could be anything more than nothing".
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For him, there is no hope. He doesn't believe anyone will ever stay with them because all their life no one ever did, everyone always left/betrayed/hurt them. He also doesn’t believe that they’ll ever be worth anything at all, that they’ll be anything at all to anyone. The way he keeps confidently repeating that they will always be alone shows that he has given up hope that someone will ever truly love them. He's not a mystical tough guy as a lot of people love to portray. He's a severe depression, an absolute hopeless loneliness (and it’s obvious, it’s all in his name).
About Sentry:
1) Desire to be praised and loved
The first person who says a kind word to him, tells him that he is worth something, he immediately follows that person and does whatever he is told, even though he is not sure that he wants to. He does it to please, to be useful, finally believing in himself because of her and wanting to prove her right.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
2) Kindness
Him being kind to those who he'd known for a couple days at most, and not even through his “own eyes”.
He listens to Valentina, even when she says she plans to use him so she won't be impeached. He's okay with that. Until she gives him the order to kill the bolts. He doesn't want to do that, even though this is the first time he's interacted with them himself, only having seen them through “Bob's eyes”. He doesn't want to hurt them, and he tells them that. He offers them to surrender and he offers it sincerely, smiling awkwardly and shrugging his shoulders, nodding a little at the thought that it's a good suggestion:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He doesn't even attack them; it's Alexei who jumps on him first, screaming.
And even when they come at him with knives and bullets, he just pushes John, Yelena and Ava away most of the time (he doesn't know Bucky and Alexei, so it's different with them).
All of that screams in everyone’s faces that he's not "I'm going to kill everyone, I'm so badass" (like some people hilariously think) but that he won’t really hurt anyone who isn't a threat to him (even if they kinda tried to hurt him, but he knows their intentions, so he’s not upset with them). He calmly and kindly asked them to surrender, again because he's trying to please Valentina, but also because he didn’t want to fight them (just because Bob knew them for a day and they helped him).
3) Insecurity
As soon as the guys don't even ridicule him, but just ask him what's wrong with his hair and the way he looks, he can't leave this topic alone, he gets all worked up, saying he doesn't like it, even though Valentina tells him to leave it alone and not to let other people's words affect him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It shows that his giant ego is only related to his great strength, but he has no self-confidence in anything else.
4) The realization that yet another person is trying to tell him how to live and what to do:
To her "you need to do what i say" he simply asks why.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He thought they were going to act as a team, but it turns out they want to put a leash on him, and he won't let that happen. He's part of Bob, and Bob has lived his whole life under someone else's commands and orders.
Sentry is also honestly tells her that she doesn't know what he's capable of, and he's right, she doesn't.
That’s the only thing he’s so sure of, his strength. (again, ironically, because of her).
5) People betraying and hurting Bob (+Sentry/Void) all his life
This scene breaks my heart every fucking time.
When she reaches for the button to kill him.
Kill him because she doesn't care, like all the others before her.
Look at his face when he realized what she wanted to do.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And his words after, "You were gonna turn on me, just like the rest of them"
Tumblr media
And that says EVERYTHING about Sentry (and Bob, and Void). About all of them and their severe trauma.
They want at least one person in their life who won't betray them or try to hurt them.
Sentry started listening to Valentina when she, again, only said a few kind words to him. He obediently did what she told him to do, even though he didn't want to, all so that someone would stand by him and tell him he was worth something.
And it ended just like so many times before in Bob’s life – no one cared about him as a person and about what he wanted.
All of Bob, all sides of him, want someone for the first time in their life to be there for them, support them and see their worth.
And the further it goes, the worse it gets:
Bob is hopeful, even though there’s so much pain and sadness in him.
Sentry is hopeful too, but there's an aggression in him when faced with attempts to trick him, to manipulate him again.
and Void – no hope at all.
And lastly, I'll add:
when Sentry becomes close to the bolts just as Bob is, he will be ready to kill anyone for them and to die himself (which thankfully is almost impossible).
Everyone’s screaming that Bob is a sweetheart, but so is Sentry (and so is Void)
They all want to be loved and understood and to matter to someone.
again quoting Florence Pugh
Bob – cute and sad
Sentry – trying and traumatized
and I’ll add from myself
Void – beyond depressed and hopeless
and I love all of them, all of Bob, very very much

Real talk; Void shaming Bob for wanting to be better, wanting to make something of himself, wanting to be a hero, when John King Of Wanting To Be Better Wanting To Make Something Of Himself Wanting To Be A Hero Walker is standing right there.
I’ll take insane parallels for 400.
Void is like: that is super sexy of him and unlike Bob, nobody’s hugging him about that. We should bang.

John says, "so what are we gonna do? just like... ride Bob into the sky?", and the next morning, Walker’s car is mYsTErIoUsLy crushed by a huge boulder (in the middle of New York!!), and his seat on the quinjet had vanished without a trace. Bob, however, amiably offers him help getting around, like, "dude, you don’t need uber, when i’m right here. i can fly and i’m not busy, so you could, you know… just ride me into the sk-".

Consider: so after months on the team John Walker really improves as a superhero. Like, REALLY gets better at it. Maybe it’s his new relationship with Bob, maybe it’s the therapy, maybe it’s seeing his son regularly, but it seems like he’s just getting stronger. From going toe to toe with Bucky to being able to solo him and Red Guardian at the same time like it’s no big deal. He’s quicker, more agile, punches harder than ever, even his injuries heal much faster than it should be possible with any know super soldier serum.
At the beginning he just dismisses it as just training harder than the rest but when, during a mission, he manages to wipe the floor with a whole team of highly skilled assassins, while the rest of the team literally stands at the sidelines wondering if they should just go for burgers and let John finish by himself since he clearly doesn’t need any help, questions start to be asked. Is the serum evolving? Should they investigate? Should they get worried?
And then when during another mission John suddenly develops an actual superpower and stops bullets with his thought everyone’s suddenly like; that’s Bob, right? That’s Bob’s thing, like clearly Bob is somehow responsible.
And they are right.
Because you see. When two adults. When they are in a relationship. Especially for a longer time. When two adults are in a relationship. When they get together. There is a certain exchange happening. A very natural transmission of fluids. Between two adults. And sometimes when one adult has a super soldier serum and the other is a god, this exchange can cause side effects of super-powered nature.
No, we are NOT telling Val.

Yelena had noticed odd things happening around the penthouse for a while now. She was trained to observe, so it was surprising that it took her so long to actually create a theory.
It started when she noticed that the top shelf of their bookcase was suspiciously clean of dust. It wasn’t a big deal, it was probably Bob, although he had been nose deep in the Game of Thrones books she gathered for him for the past week. Then, she went to grab an ice cream from the freezer, half thinking they would be gone by now since Alexei’s sweet tooth was enough to rival her own. But there, in the freezer, was a handful still there.
Nothing big, nothing obvious. The glass of water by her bedside was nearly full again when she woke up. Freshly hoovered hallways and perfectly clean windows. Her knives were always sharpened, no matter how much she used them. Bob had perfectly pristine books by the side of his chair - not the old torn ones that she found lying around before. She asked him, he shrugged.
Then Ava accidentally materialised too soon and broke one of the kitchen cabinets. Yelena had a theory, waited, and sure enough it was fixed by morning. Alexei mentioned wanting waffles, they were neatly placed on the counter, fresh from the bakery.
Yelena did some digging. She mentioned briefly that she wanted to try blueberries to Ava. The next day the fridge was empty. She tried again with Bob. Nothing. She tried with Alexei, but there was still a gap in the fridge. Bucky offered to get her some and when she declined, they didn’t appear.
She watched as John walked in, curiously eyeing him. His finger was bandaged, but other than that he looked much the same as ever. Last try.
“I want blueberries,” she announced, bluntly. She tossed an apple up in the air before taking a bite.
John raised an eyebrow in her direction. “Get some then,” he replied, annoyance on his features as if Yelena was bothering him. He didn’t stay for long, never one to hang out in the communal areas longer than he had to. And Yelena half thought that was it, that it was all coincidence and maybe it was everyone doing little acts of kindness each day.
But before evening that night, a bag of fresh blueberries sat proudly in the fridge, tucked away behind the butter.
She thought, smiled, planned. She was going to have some fun with this…

Villains kidnap John to use him as bait for the New Avengers, but as soon as they learn his boyfriend isn’t the Winter Soldier, but Sentry, they feel their souls leaving their bodies.
Less than an hour later, John (delivered first class) is already in the Avengers Tower’s main room with an apology note glued to his suit: "A misunderstanding occurred, please, forgive us Mr. Sentry".
+ bonus:
Villains: so, how soon will your friends arrive with your bOyFriEnD leading the charge? John, imperturbably: well, I doubt he’ll be leading the charge, we have a different leader. Villains: isn’t the Winter Soldier your team's leader? John: i mean, technically yes, but what does that have to do with the case? Villains: isn’t he your boyfriend? the news did say that one of your teammates became your boyfriend. John: it's true, but wrong guy. Villains, starting to sweat nervously: Red Guardian? John: nope. Villains: …does your boyfriend’s name happen to start with an S and end with entry? John: yep. Villains: …We are so screwed.

Okay idea!
You know when Bob has episodes where he forgets everything? I think in his episodes, there are moments where he goes back to the Void, like the very bad episodes. And the Thunderbolt/New Avengers have to go back in to go save him again.
And maybe after a while and several episodes, they start taking turns, like, they don't all go at the same time because they know how to calm him down. And so there is no longer need for everyone.
And so, at one point it's John's turn and he's the one who goes into the Void to get Bobby.
He goes out there into the Void to find Bobby and he confesses his feelings, like a hell of a declaration that ends with "I love you." And it instantly calms Bob/the Void down.
Except that afterward they both come out, and obviously Bob has forgotten everything, He just goes to John to thank him and John, who knew it was going to happen (that's why he did it), still has a slightly strained smile, But he's still like, "Don't worry, Bobby, no problem!".
And after that, John continues to go into the void when Bob has a crisis and tells him I love you, but always with different things each time, he tells him about how much he loves him, what he likes about him, and how brave he is, etc.
And unfortunately for Bob every time John tells him "I love you" in the Void, This immediately cuts off Bob's crisis and so even in the void Bob doesn't have time to respond to his feelings.
The other Thunderbolts are impressed by John's ability to silence the Void, They would like to know how?? but John always tells them to go fuck themselves.
And that's it! I think that would be a great concept for a fanfic!!!

Idk, it’s just funny how, as each new Bob personality shows up, John’s bravado just keeps getting smaller, in the movie. He feels all bold with Bob himself. Less confident with Sentry. But when Void appears, it’s not just that John doesn’t try, he doesn’t even consider any confrontation, like, "Jesus, I don’t get paid enough for this" (HE DOESN’T GET PAID AT ALL. He’s working purely on enthusiasm!!
"But what does he buy food with?" Nothing! He doesn’t need it. He feeds on his own regret, shame and guilt!).

I need Sentry to catch John and carry him in bridal style when he falls from height.
I need John and Bob to roll over meadows for no particular reasons for fifteen minutes like those cheesy romantic movies.
I need Void to get in John's mind to break him down and tell him no one will love John but him.
