Herz aus Glas und Ranken
Unmöglich eigentlich, so rein, so gut.
Eile, Ranke, rette was du zu schützen suchst.
Dornen stechen mir ins Fleisch.
Zwecklos, gestorben, hast verloren Herzens Licht.

In keeping with the throwback theme for today, an oldish tone-drawing I did about five years ago.  What this really needs, is context.  I think the commission was something like “a quiet moment for Bloodbraid Elf.”  All by herself, there’s not really much of a narrative.  Something as simple as a quick background indicating a sunrise, or a campfire, or a pet-lizard-thing, would make this piece read a lot stronger.

Magic Players Around the Fandom
I think I’ve seen one of these before, but it was just for people in general. I wanna start one that’s just for Magic players. I’m tagging a few people who have better visibility than me so hopefully this will get passed around more.
So. Reblog this with where you’re from (you don’t have to put the city if you don’t want, just the state/part of the state), and what events you go to/could go to (again, if you want). Maybe some of us could run into each other at events like Opens and such!
I’ll start: western Tennessee, and I usually go to Opens in St. Louis, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, and Nashville, and sometimes IQs and PPTQs if they’re close enough and someone can watch our dog, lol. FNMs and prereleases are included as well :)
I also play Modern, a little Legacy (though that scene is dead here), and am just getting back into Standard. I’ve also been working on an EDH deck as a side project.

I do a lot of alters.  A LOT.  (E.G. http://ow.ly/4mY7N7)  But if you’re following me here, you probably know that.
Not quite as many with oil paint.  Oils offer much more control and possibilities.  But at this size, it’s a careful, time-consuming, and necessarily tedious process.  This one feels like a bit of a breakthrough for me.  This is the first that I didn’t feel limited by the tiny, tiny format.
That makes me happy, because besides the alter just plain turning out cool, it means that after all these years, I’m still growing.

Talk about confimation bias, if you look for evidence for emrakul you'll find evidence for emrakul despite all the contrary evidence. Looking at the big picture so far there is something fishy going on, not eldrazi. But if it end up being Emmy wotc bloody earned it.
Emrakul is not on Innistrad
Until I see the name Emrakul or the phrase “Emrakul is on Innistrad”, it is NOT confirmed. Highly hinted at, yes. Plausible, yes. Confirmed? No, I don’t think so.
Nahiri is drawing the Moon closer to the surface. To obliterate the plane?
The Helvault is made from a shard from the Moon. The Helvault is used to trap demons and dark creatures. What ancient Eldritch horrors could be sealed in the moon? Oh, and the next set is called ELDRITCH MOON
I’m just a little tired of seeing an Unconfirmed theory being so widespread. I miss the speculation.

A Guide to Casual EDH and Optimization
If games of Standard are like skirmishes, one faction against another, games of EDH are like wars between multiple parties.
With such long games and with the nature of magic, its easy to end up with a salty ending to a two hour game. This post is a guide on how to avoid those bitter feelings.
STEP 1: Cut all cards that make you win on the spot.
These make the entire game up to this point useless, only that turn mattered and you might as well have skipped the rest of the game. This includes things that win if they aren’t removed immediately such as Consecrated Sphinx. Others are Insurrection and Storm Herd.
You want the war to be a series of battles, sometimes one player has the advantage and sometimes another player does, it comes down to how well you play your cards not “I bought an Insurrection so I win”.
STEP 2: No extra turns.
I’ve already written about them, in short they’re very selfish because they lengthen the game at everyone else’s expense.
STEP 3: Cut deck search.
Tutoring when controlled can be moderately ok. The problem is, no matter what kind if tutor, at some point its going to be used to search out an answer and ruin someone’s day in a bad way. Tutor heavy decks are also a sign of bad deckbuilding, as you can’t get your strategy rolling without accessing your deck every other turn. This also isn’t to say you can’t run a tutor or two, that’s fine. But know how they function in your deck.
STEP 4: Cut Infinite Combos
No deck should ever run Kiki Jiki, ESPECIALLY as a commander. Having Instant speed/hasted/infinite tokens is obscene, especially when cards like Tooth and Nail can just fetch him and a combo piece immediately.
Infinite combos are a very unfun thing to play against because it demands an answer on the spot at instant speed. Players should not be expected to always have spot removal ready at any given point of the game (though players should be expected to run SOME removal). And that’s what infinite combos exploit, the “what? you don’t have an answer this turn? Lol I win” is awful to play against, and like the problem with cards that win you the game on the spot they make the previous two hours of play meaningless, leaving everyone else feeing very salty.
STEP 5: Cut as much staples and goodstuff as possible.
EDH is a format of creativity. The idea is to build an interesting deck to play for fun, not to net deck to win. That’s not to say don’t run staples, they have a purpose. Boros may never draw cards if you don’t run staples. Your deck just doesn’t need to run tons of staples. Try to find creative ways of drawing cards and recurring that fit in theme with your commander. Make the logistics of your deck (ramp/draw/recur) thematic, make your deck play differently.
STEP 6: Optimize 75%
Even a budget Rubinia build can do work in more competitive settings. It isn’t as much about how much money you put into it, its more how optimized is your deck. In this format its possible to make your deck TOO efficient to the point where you’re unstoppable. Nobody wants to play against an unstoppable deck where spot removal is meaningless. You want to make it about 75% of what it should be, a fine engine but with flaws that give it weaknesses that make the game more interesting for it. In a multiplayer setting, you shouldn’t consider winning more than 50% of the time if there’s 4 players each game, that’s selfish thinking.
Many people complain about control. Well fully optimized aggro sucks just as much to play against, look at Kaalia. Less optimized control can play just as well alongside aggro and midrange, it really just depends on your optimization.
STEP 7: Take Responsibility
I’ve seen Rafiq players confused and sad everyone scooped as soon as they one shot-ed a player right out of the gate with Hexproof and Indestructible. I’ve seen Narset players take back an Armageddon post casting because people started scooping.
As you build your deck you should understand the impacts the cards you run have. Do not be shocked if you play Armageddon after Collective Voyage that everyone concedes, there’s no point in playing a game you can’t play. You built this deck, you take responsibility for the salty feelings it causes.
Its important to deck build with how you want games to run in mind. Do you want to make everyone else sad (as what seems to be the standard motive for most players switching into EDH)? Don’t get upset when everyone scoops and no one wants to play against you anymore because they’re tired of playing two hours to feel sad.
This is a 7 Step process to make your decks more fun to play against and to make a friendlier meta. This process has been proven true by my own meta and has allowed for more casual strategies that couldn’t exist before to flourish. If your meta is having problems after games I highly suggest taking a look at a few of these steps and seeing if you have any of these problems.

It's also banned in EDH/commander, so there is that...

-Overlooked Card of the Day: Limited Resources
-Average price on tcgplayer.com ($0.50)
-Why is it good?
-Limited Resources is a one drop that can devastate the board state at almost any point of the game. It does extremely well in a deck with a very low mana curve, and it can stop your opponents from playing almost any giant creatures or board wipes. Also, Limited Resources says that you can’t PLAY lands; however, if you load your deck with cards that put lands directly into play, then you can end up having more cards than all of the other players, greatly improving your board state.
-My Thoughts
-In my opinion, Limited Resources can, and will, win you games. If you make a deck with either a very low mana curve, or one that cheats lands into play, then you will almost always have an advantage over your opponents.
-Overall, I believe Limited Resources should be used more often, as it can give you a large board advantage, it prevents your opponents finishers, and it is essentially a Balance for lands.

Living on zendikar, enjoy the white dusty beaches and peace when you see a tentacled abomination floating by lifelessly. Public service announcement, if you find any and all pieces of kozi and/or ula, please report to the giant ass Dragon that's currently arguing with Chandra at her throne. Thank you for your visit and always say to yourself, at least I'm not on innistrad!
Tumblr media
While I was originaly skeptical of some third eldritch inspired abomination, it does look like there is something in the sea of Innistrad with tentacles. This make Drownyard Temple more interesting as i suspect it is somehow connected.
We have werewolves on a rampage, Nahiri inciting hysteria and warping stone, Angels on a crusade, A leviathan horror unfrozen, vampires preparing for all out war, an indestructable demon summoned, and now Cthulu woke up. Is it just me or does living in Zendikar sound pretty good right now?
