In the 90s the #lgbtq were still relatively underground despite being more widely accepted by society. Although raids on gay clubs were mostly a thing of the past, attitudes like 'don't ask don't tell' still kept many people firmly in the closet for fear of losing family, friends, and even jobs. It's why I based this AU on 90s America.
