Did that ***-bag keep his job and run off with that ****head Business to, Bricksburg or The Old West? Or Middle Zealand? Is he studyin’ Kabala? Did he win a million dollars? Or is he dead in a office somewhere?

Getting sad thinking of Emmet Brickowski again..

I think he is the epitome of masking and how a lot of the time it doesn’t even work ??? And is kind of just an identity destroyer ??? I’m probably also just projecting but UGH even the silly scenes in the movie have a sadness behind them.

I know the point is that everybody is following the same rules of society, but NOBODY is following them as close or alertly as Emmet is. We can see everybody is following them. There’s signs and billboards of them all over the city.

HOWEVER Emmet seems to be the only person who carries the instructions with him (at least that seems to be the case.)

In the beginning of the movie, he wakes up, and one of the first things he does (besides saying good morning to a bunch of non-living things..) is grab an instruction manual from a bookshelf full of instructions.

But it isn’t just ANY instruction manual, it’s instructions of “How to: fit in, have everyone like you, and always be happy.”

Again, he seems like he’s the only one actively carrying this with him, saying the words out loud to himself. Everybody else seems to just know to do these things, and naturally just seem to conform to them, but in the movie, Emmet makes it seem very structured and planned out. This is what he’s supposed to do, and he tries to follow it to a T.

Also in the manual, it says to “eat a complete breakfast with all the special people in your life,” and, despite only having Mr Plant (his houseplant) he still tries to follow the rule to the best of his ability. I’m sure he’d follow it better if he could!

(Also the baby being the only one who doesn’t experience love in the image is very funny to me for some reason)

But I think this is how masking is for a lot of autistic people. Sometimes we will think we are following the rules really good, yet still find ourselves unable to live a “normal” life. Still find ourselves without the friends others who follow these rules have, because at the end of the day, we aren’t even following the “instructions” the same way everybody else is. For them, it’s often not even instructions, it’s just how they are.

The people in the city are expected to be very social, and very happy, and Emmet is actually very good at being both of these things.

At some point Emmet is about to go with his coworkers to get food, after them asking who wants to. He is very involved and attentive to the conversation. He says: “You know what I love to do? Is share a meal with the special people in my life!” A callback to the part of the instructions he couldn’t quite follow earlier that day.

Meanwhile, everybody seems to ignore him.

While listing off the names of his coworkers, all while holding his instruction manual, he walked into something, and his instructions blow away in the wind. He asks them to wait up, while he gets the instructions, but after seeing they wouldn’t, says he’ll meet them there.

And I think both the fact that he is so reliant on the instructions that he’d rather go fetch them than just continue on with his coworkers, and the fact his coworkers just carried on without him (and also didn’t notice, or at least care about, his absence) is GENUINELY. It’s an experience I think.

Anyways most of this is just me doing the opposite of summarizing uhm. But anyways, this scene is really important because we get introduced to Lucy (who had named herself Wyldstyle. ) Emmet is about to tell her she’s breaking a rule and he’ll have to report her. This is important!

Anyways, Emmet accidentally finds the piece of resistance and then is getting interrogated. While the scene at the beginning I just yapped about was a more lighthearted and silly scene, this one shows another side to the entire situation. Emmet is forced to see the reality of everything. No matter how strictly he follows the rules society has decided we’re right, he is not viewed in the same light as his coworkers and peers view one another.

“He’s kind of an average, normal kinda guy? But yknow, he’s not, he’s not like, ‘normal,’ like us. He’s not.. that.. special.”

While most other (Lego) people are finding what makes them who they are, and being recognized by those traits, Emmet seems to be preoccupied on following all of the rules correctly. He struggles to form his own opinions, only listening to popular music, only watching popular TV shows. He thinks this will make him fit in, and maybe in a large group of people, it does! But in the end it destroys his individuality, and makes others just see him as Some Other Guy. And the thing is, Emmet doesn’t seem to have much identity outside of following the rules either. He firmly believes that if he just follows these rules good enough, he will be good enough. But that just isn’t true!

And I think this reflects what a lot of high-masking peoples (<-not necessarily exclusive to autistics, that’s just what mainly comes to my mind) experiences as well. (At least for me…)

Anyways. Then we have Wyldstyle/Lucy. I think the name she gave herself kind of describes her as a character I guess 😭 her style is wild or whatever. While Emmet is focused on following all of the rules ever, she is pretty much the complete opposite. It isn’t like his coworkers, where they seem to just naturally follow the rules, she simply doesn’t follow them, she chooses not to. And the fact that Emmet seems to admire her so much despite this, maybe that shows that he doesn’t care all that much about the rules to begin with, and moreso about what is promised if he follows them.

When he learns he is “the special” he is very determined to do well, but he realizes that the instructions he follows back at his home, are much different than the rules followed here. Suddenly, he is expected to have his own opinions, to be creative, and to come up with his own ideas. After spending so much time focused on fitting in, he doesn’t know how to come up with anything.

When he looks inside of his mind, it’s completely empty, Wyldstyle saying he’s probably never had an original idea in his life, prompting Emmet to introduce the idea for a double decker couch (which is likely inspired by the couch to share a special meal with special people. Even including cup holders!) This idea is immediately called dumb =( and then later disappointing, and Emmet seems to lose faith in it overall. Which I think is probably why he adheres to instruction so diligently. As soon as he comes up with his own thing, it’s dismissed as dumb or disappointing! He can’t seem to win by following the rules and fitting in, and can’t seem to win by being creative and coming up with his own ideas. And for the one piece of individuality he has (the double-decker couch) to be viewed as a dumb idea, probably discourages him from being his own self at all!

HOWEVER. I do think being around other characters who don’t follow to the same rules he does/did helped him realize he doesn’t have to. He realizes that all these people he’s trying to save the world with, they argue, they disagree with each other. And they don’t follow rules. Unikitty is from a place called “Cloud Cuckoo Land”, where there are, apparently, no rules! (<-though this doesn’t keep her from listing a bunch anyways, mainly things a kid would come up with, no bedtimes or babysitters or mustaches. Or negativity, which she seems to just repress completely. Probably not healthy!) Everybody seems to be just dancing and partying there. Unikitty seems to mask in another way. While Emmet masks by following rules, Unikitty masks by indulging in escapism and repressing negative thoughts. (Using escapism to mask negative feelings vs trying to follow rules to fit in do overlap but I guess aren’t exactly the same thing. Nevertheless, both Emmet and Unikitty seem to mask in their own ways, despite one being very rule-centric and the other being more fun-centric. Wyldstyle also technically masks in her own way too, but she doesn’t do it to fit in, she just tries to look cool and is embarrassed of her past self.)

Then we have Benny, aka 1980-something spaceship guy, who most of his dialogue is him saying spaceship or talking about spaceships . Metalbeard, a pirate who lost all of his body except for his head. And Batman. Who is Batman, but if he was much less empathetic (I haven’t seen much Batman I can’t rlly be a judge of how accurate he is, lmao) (he is also masking because he is Batman)

Anyways. Idk I don’t think I was making any solid points but I’m surprised more people when talking about autistic-coded characters bring him up ????????? Am I just losing my mind idk I’ve been typing this for like an hour atp. But he is the most autistic character ever okay. Also he’s a Lego.

MYSTICALBOOTY FANFIC!!

Im SO MAD because I tried to post this by putting the AO3 link to it and IT WONT WORK, it kept telling me to get the app so I just copied and pasted It. This is shorter than I had hoped for but i had fun writing it!!! I havent written anything in a while either! On AO3 its called Chatting!!!

After Emmet had acquired his markers, glitter glue and construction paper, Emmet had gone into the Captain's Cabin to make instructions! Lucy, Batman, Benny and Unikitty were in there too, watching him do his thing! Although Unikitty unfortunately had gotten sea sick easily...

As for Vitruvius, he made his way to where Metalbeard was. He had been on this large ship enough times to remember its whole layout.

He went all the way up the stairs that led onto the Quarter Deck. He held onto the railing with one hand and his staff in the other.

Metalbeard was steering the Sea Cow hadnt really noticed Vitruvius until he heard a loud thud. Vitruvius had stumbled. Metalbeard couldnt help but chuckle a bit at the sight.

"Yarrgh!! Ye be okay there matey? Better be careful, ya dont wanna break yer back!"

"Im good, Metalbeard."

Vitruvius said as stood back up and walked over to where Metalbeard stood.

"Ah well, what brings ye up here anyway?"

"I wanted to talk to you about Emmet-"

Metalbeard put his cannon-hand thing on his hip and raised an eyebrow."

"After his speech I do have some faith in the boy, although I cant help but be a wee bit wary of how everything will go tomorrow..."

"I dont think there is any need to be, I have around him long enough to know he has a lot of potential."

"I suppose... Ye've always been an optimistic one have ye!" His attention more brought onto Vitruvius now rather than the steering of the Sea Cow.

"Why yes I have. Oh! That reminds me Metalbeard, of you when we were young...before you had your beard? You went by Craggy, correct? You were quite optimistic yourself."

The pirate had felt a small pang of...sorrow? or nostalgia upon hearing that name.

"Aye I had! No one has called me that for a while. The last people t' call me that were apart of me crew!"

"Oh I see."

"Back then I had strapping and virile body..." He went on, at this point he was repeating himself. Although hearing Metalbeard's tell of woe a million times before he had felt much empathy for him.

"I've always thought you were quite endearing then, even now. I may not be able to see how it looks now but even if I could im positive I would think the same way."

"Really now? Ye arent pullin' my leg are ye?"

"Oh no of course not."

"Arr, well I think ye be rather thee charmer yerself!"

Ough, old men flirting. Vitruvius had chuckled, although his beard covered his mouth, you could tell he was smiling by looking at the way his eyes lit up. They had spoke to eachother until Emmet had called them over to the Captain's Cabin to finally discuss his plans. The two had felt very fond of eachother, much warmth and comfort, although they hadn't really brought this up to the others.
