The West Zippo Lighter begins after 1930 at the Bradford Country Club in Bradford, Pennsylvania. Mr Blaisdell - the founder of Zippo Manufacturing - was following a friend who tried unsuccessfully to use a lighter made in Austria. He noticed that the lighter worked well, even in the wind, due to the unique basket, but the appearance and design were inefficient. The lighter requires the use of two hands to light it and its thin metal surface was slightly serrated.
