The older vampire nodded, relieved that he hadn’t accidentally done anything to anger the other. “Like I said, I understand, and I can certainly pull some strings to get you backstage. Shouldn’t be too difficult.” A calloused but reassuring hand landed on Nick’s shoulder. “Care to talk about what troubles you in the meantime? I still have time before I have to leave. What’s on your mind?” Rafael would always make time for Nikolas; in the relatively short time that they’d known each other, the man had grown very dear to him, and Rafael worried every time he tried to pull away.

“Do you think I really care about seeing in the New Year? I’ve seen so many of them already…. Why don’t we just stay in instead?”

Oh. Ouch. He hadn’t expected such a scathing rejection from the other, but tried not to show his disappointment. Instead, Rafael bore an apologetic yet bright smile. “Alas, mein freund, I can’t stay. My band and I are playing at a bar downtown tonight, and as much as I would love to keep you company, I’d also hate to let them down. You’re welcome to come see us, if you’d like, but I understand if you’d prefer to avoid the crowds of drunken mortals.”

It had been a totally mundane night. They’d finished their last fair day in this town, and were packing up to move to their next destination. Nothing new for Rafael and his troupe. His coven. It came as a great surprise, then, when he was suddenly grabbed and pinned up against the wall of his makeshift office. He would have fought back had his assailant not rapidly pressed their lips against his in violently passionate fashion. The vampire didn’t move, at first, too busy trying to discern who had dared to assault him. When he realized that it was Nick, his eyes went wide.

Nick? Really? Perhaps Rafael was a little unobservant when it came to romance these days, but he genuinely hadn’t realized that the other felt this strongly about him. Not totally against it, he gripped Nick’s hips to keep him close and kissed him back. It had been a very long time since he’d allowed himself to be at another’s mercy like this, and while he would normally fight to be the dominant one, he was curious to see what his friend would do with him. This…this was hot as hell! This aggressive, demanding side of Nick that he’d never seen before was prompting Rafael to show in turn a side of himself that few people had ever seen.

“He does?” Rafael was doubtful, to say the least. Flirtatious as they could be, at times, he would never have called whatever his relationship with Jordan was a crush. The lord was his employer, and a fairly difficult one at that. He seemed to be too proud a man to have a paltry ‘crush’ on his mercenary guard. Still, Rafael was curious. “If this is true, why doesn’t he tell me himself?” the vampire joked. “Surely, he is not afraid of rejection!”
