Evaluation

In this project we were looking at documentary photography. So we had to choose what we wanted to take images of for our photo book we are going to do for our final piece. I choose to do a local life in Nottingham. To show the different environment and local life around Nottingham. When doing my photo book, I am going to get a A5 sketch book and print out the images I want to put in the photo book. Because I want different aspect to the photo book. Also all my images are going to be in black and white. Because I want to show a different look and it shows more of a story to all the images and make an interesting documentary. When thinking about the images I wanted to take. I was inspired by Frank Menger. Because I was really inspired by his work and how he took his documentary photographs and how he composition his work. So I wanted my images inspired by him but with my own twist to the images.

Before taking the images I was planning where I wanted to take these images and why I wanted to take the images. So I decided that I wanted to do local and capture the everyday life and what happens around the city centre so I want to capture the different people going round and doing their everyday life. Then when getting the images that came out very successful I was taking the images in RAW, then after I started to edit the image in Photo Shop. So I started to do is put my images into black and white to get a different aspect to the images. Also the artists I am looking at does his documentary images in black and white and I wanted to do the same composition of his work. I also changed the contrast and brightness of the image to get the correct contrast.

My images are about the local life in Nottingham. So I wanted to document what happens in the environment and everyday life around Nottingham. When taking these images, I used my 200ml zoomed lens to get the correct composition of the people in my images. So I checked my camera settings to get the correct camera settings. Because I needed the right lighting in my photographs. I choose to do this because I wanted to get the story of what is happing in Nottingham so the people and the environment and the everyday life in the images. So I wanted to capture the life and atmosphere in each image. I also got inspired by Frank Menger because I really like his documentary photographs in Paris and how he composition his images.

I think my images go very well together in my images because I think the images are telling a story behind each photograph. Because I want it to be a story about the life in Nottingham and what it shows about the atmosphere and the people in each image. 

I am very pleased with my final piece and how it came out because I think each image has it own story behind the image. I also really like how the images all link together to show the story of local life in Nottingham. I also really like the outcome of my photo book because I really like how I printed it in card to make it more sturdy and give it a shiny effect of the photo book. So I am very pleased with my outcome of my Photo Book and also the outcome of the images. 

My strengths in the project was my images. I am very pleased with the outcome of the images and how they all link together. I also I am very pleased with the Photo Book and how it came out. I also really like how the images tell a different story to the image. If I was going to do this project again I would do my photo book in a A5 sketch book and put the images in there. Also I would do a title for each photograph. Also I would of got images of young old and different area of Nottingham not just the city centre. This is what I would do differently.

Final Piece

This is my Final piece, My photo book is based round the local life in Nottingham. So my images are from everyday life and atmosphere in the city centre. So to make this photo book I started with going to inDesign and get  a new document up. Then I put my pages to 16 pages because I had 14 pictures all together and then my front and back page. Then i did my front pages with my title calling it Local Life In Nottingham. Then put my images in the order I thought that links together and it tells more of a story. Then I did my back pages, I put the title of the book where and when the photo book was published. I then got A3 card and then printed it out. After I printed it out I put the paper and folder it in half so then it looked like a photo book. Then I stapled the pages together. I used card for this because it makes it more sturdy and gives it a more of a photo book.

Everyday pictures

in my everyday pictures, I took pictures of fruit cut up. I wanted to capture the fruit drying up. So when taking my images I was trying to capture difference of the fruit. So I took images over a couple of weeks to show the difference in each image. To show how long it takes for oranges, limes and lemons to dry up. When taking the images I was trying to get the same composition in each image so you can see more of an outcome of the fruit. Also trying to take a picture the same time everyday so there is the same lighting in the images. To get the correct exposure in the image. Then went into Photoshop and started to make a grid. Where the images can go. To do this i went into Photoshop, Opened a new document and put to A4. Then to make the grid i went on view, new grid layout and put in 4 by 7 to get the grid layout. Then to get the pictures on the grid. I pressed of file place embedded and then adjusted the size. Then i used the rectangle marquee tool because the pictures where sticking out of the grid. Then pressed the mask too then repeated this for the other images.

Photo Book

This is my finished Photo Book, So i decided to name the book, the local life of Nottingham because i think that it shows that I am trying to document the local life that is happening in Nottingham City Center. So then i started to put my images onto the Photo Book. I decided to use the images because i really wanted to document the people going around the town and to show that everyone is different and not the same. I also wanted to show the environment of the town and document a different aspect to each photograph.

I also put the image into black and white because I think it makes the images so much better and documents the meaning behind each image. I also was trying to be inspired by my artists Frank menger and how he composition his work out. Because i really liked how it shows the photographs and documents the local.

Adobe InDesign Photo Book

Step by step

In the first step I opened InDesign then opened a new document. Then the second step I changed the layout to A5 and portrait, Then put the pages to 8 so i can fit all my images on one page each. Third step I made the text box to put my title on. Fourth Step i started to put my images on each page.

So I firstly pressed file the place to open up the images I wanted. Then I opened one image, Then dragged the image to the right size then put it center to the page. Then i repeated these steps for the rest of the images I put in the Photo Book.  Then I saved this as a PDF. So I went into file then pressed on export and then saved it as a PDF on the save part. This means that you can go back and edit the book if you want to changed something.

Local Documentary - Photographs

In these images i was exploring my local idea and going round the local town and taking images of the people. So in these images I went into the town center and started to capture the environment around town. When taking these images I set my images to ISO 100, Aperture f/5.6 and shutter speed 1/25 to get the correct exposure.

In the first images I was trying to capture the person riding the bike. To capture the different idea of the town and people traveling around. I was trying to get the people riding the bike in focus and the background out of focus. When taking these images I was focusing on the composition of the images. Also I put the images onto photo shop and started to edit this photograph. So i firstly started to edit the image into black and white because the person i am inspired by is Frank menger and his photographs are in black and white, so i put all my images that are going into the photo book in black and white. Then I adjusted the brightness and contrast in the photograph to get the correct exposure in the whole image. 

In the second photograph I was focusing on capturing the older people going around town to capture the different environment in Nottingham. So when taking these images I was focusing on the camera settings. So i put my ISO on 100, then put my aperture on f/6.0 then put my shutter speed on 1/25 to get the right exposure and contrast in the whole of the photograph. Also when i was taking these images i was focusing on the composition of the photographs when taking the images. Then i went onto photo shop and started to edit the photograph. I firstly started to put the image into black and white. Then I put the images into brightness and contrast to get the correct exposure in the image. 

In the third photograph i was trying to capture the life coming out different shops. To capture a different aspect in each image of the local areas of Nottingham City center. Then when taking this photograph i was looking at my camera settings to make sure it is correct exposure in the image. So i put my Shutter speed on 1/20, Aperture f/6.0 and ISO 100 to get the correct contrast through out the image. Then i put my images onto Photoshop, I firstly changed the image to black and white and then adjusted the brightness and contrast to get the correct contrast. 

in the fourth photograph i was trying to capture the movement of the man and the people in the shop, to give it a different aspect in the image. Then I adjusted my camera settings to ISO 100, aperture f/5.0 then my shutter speed to 1/25 to get the correct exposure through out the photography. Then I went onto photoshop and put the image into black and white then I adjusted the contrast and brightness.

Frank menger

These images are photographed by Frank Menger. These images are taken in Paris restaurants. He is capturing the busyness and  what goes on in the local bar and restaurant. So I wanted to look at his work and try and re create his photograph with the same composition. His work is based on people capturing the moment and people enjoying themselves. so this has inspired me to do local and capture moments of town and everyday life. 

Frank Menger is a photographer and print maker based in south wales. Currently working as Senior Technical Instructor in Photography at the University of the West of England, Frank explores photography away from the studio and digital darkroom, mainly using analogue techniques. Most of His photographic work is created using analogue photographic techniques in the capture stage, with images printed digitally for exhibitions. 

So when i am taking my images to go in my photo book I am looking at his work and being inspired by his composition of his work and how he takes his images. Because i want to capture the same idea like Frank Menger work.

Local Documentary - photo shoot

In this photo shoot, i went round the local ares of Nottingham. so I am focusing on my project local. So I was inspired by Frank menger. Because his documentary photography is based on local. So I was inspired by Frank menger in these photographs. So i was looking at the composition of his work and how he edited his images. So i went round Nottingham city center to capture the environment of the town in these images. Because I want to capture the people and the local environment. 

So when I was looking at all my images i choose these two. Because i think these images came out the best. Because i really like how both of the image have a depth of field to the photograph. So the people are the main focus and the background is out of focus. When taking these images i set my camera to ISO 100, Aperture f/5.6 and then i put my shutter speed on 1/25 to get the correct exposure and contrast in the images. 

Then after taking the image i would transfer my images onto photo shop. I firstly changed the images to black and white to get the same effect as Frank Menger. Then i would adjust the brightness and contrast. So i would bring down the brightness and then bring up the contrast to get the correct exposure in the images. I think these images document the local side to the Town. Also showing the environment and everyday life around the town.

Project Proposal

In this project I am focusing on local, so I am looking at different artists that focus on local documentary. So I have found an artist that I am focusing on and inspired by, the artists I want to get inspired by is Frank Manger he did a documentary of people in restaurants in Paris and showing the different environment. So this is what I want to do for my final project for my documentary photo book. When doing this project, I want to capture people going around in everyday environment and what is happening in the local area. Also when taking this project, I want to capture the same composition in my photographs as Frank Manger work. So I am hoping to capture everyone going round in everyday life, so I want all my images to tell a story about the local atmosphere. Also when I am taking these images I want to capture loads of people doing different things in my photographs.

When I am taking these images I am looking for different compositions but all tell the same story to get a documentary out of local. Also looking at how to capture specific things to capture the everyday environment around the local area. Also looking at my artists and how he documented his images and how to show a story behind each image. So when taking these images, I want to show different emotions on people faces to show that there is a different atmosphere in everyone in everyday life. So i am going round Nottingham city center to capture the environment and the everyday life. 

When taking these images, I am going to do landscape photograph and put the images into black and white. I am going to focus on how I am going to use my camera. So I want to have the right contrast throughout the images. So I need to be specific on my camera settings. So I need to check my aperture, ISO and shutter speed because I need the right amount of light coming in the image. So when taking these images, I am going to put my camera on manual, also put my ISO on 100 to get the correct exposure in the image. Then I am going to put my Aperture on (f/5.0-6.5) to get the right contrast in the images. I am also going to check on the composition of my images when taking them.  Also I will be using a 200mm lens because his photographs are very zoomed in and capture different facial features and atmosphere.

When doing this documentary I want to show the environment and the local every life in Nottingham and how it goes around in everyday life. I am very interested in this because I found the artists Frank manger very interesting and how he takes his images so I wanted to do something inspired by him. This is why I choose local because I want to show what happens around Nottingham and the different atmosphere. So I was very inspired by his work and how documented his work.

Train station and Canal Documentary

In this task, we went out to take photographs of documenting the train station and the canal. So we had take image on the way there, at the place and on the way back. To document the journey you take while getting to this place.

So in the first image and second image I was trying to capture the canal, so I was thinking about the composition of the image to capture the documentary of the canal. So I decided to go on the bridge and take a photo through the fence, then I took a photograph looking down the canal to capture a different aspect to the canal. When taking these images I put my camera settings on ISO 100, Aperture f:5.6 and then shutter speed on 1/25 to get the correct exposure through out the image. Then I started to edit the image. I firstly out the image into black and white and then adjusted the contrast and brightness to get the correct contrast through out the image.

In the third, fourth, fifth and sixth photograph I went to the train station and started to capture the journey and the documentary of the train station. So I decided to take image of on the way there, there and on the way back to document my journey. When taking these image I went to set my camera settings on ISO 100, aperture f/4.0 and then shutter speed 1/25 to get the correct contrast through out the image. Then after taking this image I went onto photoshop and first I adjusted the contacts and brightness and adjusted the image to black and white.

Solargram

A by Martin Winfield is a five month exposure. 

A Solargram are images capture on light sensitive paper over a period of time. So this is where you exposure a photograph on paper over a period of time. So we are exposing our pinhole camera for 3 weeks, To see how much the image will be exposed. So to do this I got a plastic film pot and then i got 1cm by 1cm whole. Then I got some Tin and made a small hole with a needle in the middle. Then I used sand paper and sanded down the other side. Then I stuck down the tin over the whole we made on the plastic tube. Then got some blue tac and stuck it over the whole we made on the tin. Then went into the dark room and put light sensetive paper in the plastic tube. Then put the lid on. Then I took it home and place on my window facing my back garden. So we are going to leave that for 3 weeks and see how it will expose.

These solargrams are by frank Manger

This series of solargrams was made during our summer holidays in Montenegro. The hot, sunny weather provided ideal conditions to make prints on (extremely) out-of date paper, using found objects as inspiration.

Exposures lasted between 4 and 6 hours in full sunshine, after which the images were fixed and washed.

I think these solagrams are very interesting to look at because you can’t really tell what is going on in the photograph. Because you can tell that there is objects in the solargrams. Because they are very dark and don’t have that much colour to them and I found it very interesting where he did these solagrams.

When doing my solargrams it didn’t turn out right, when making my pinhole camera. I didn’t make the whole big enough so there wasn’t enough light to let in. So that means there was any photo on the paper. So next time I do it I need to make sure that the whole is big enough so it lets enough light in.

Documentary Photography

In these images I was focusing on capturing this protest that was happing in Nottingham town squares. So I wanted to document different aspect of this protect and document what’s happening in each image I took.

In my first image I was focusing on the people in a group with different signs. To capture what they where protesting about. I wanted to show why they put on the signs. To document the meaning of this protects that is happening. When taking these images I looked at my camera settings, I put my camera on aperture f5.0, then shutter speed 1/300 and then ISO 100 because it was quite sunny and need to get the correct exposure. Then I went onto photoshop and started to edit this image. I adjusted the contrast and brightness to get the correct exposure. Then I changed the image to black and white because I am looking at Robert frank. Because I am inspired by his documentary book that he did about the Americans.

In my second image I was focusing on capturing a moment between two people. To document that there is many different people at this protest. I was also looking at the composition of this image because I wanted to get these two people in the image and also trying to capture the sign in the background to show that it’s about the protest. When taking these images I was looking at my cemera settings. I put my camera settings on ISO 100, aperture f/4.5 and then shutter speed 1/125 to get the correct exposure in the image. Then I went onto photoshop and adjusted the brightness and contrast on the image to get the correct lighting in the image. Then I changed the image to black and white because I think it documents the images more and shows a different aspect to the image.

In my third image I was capturing the signs they made and capturing a different composition to the protest. Because I wanted to show all aspects of the protest to show a documentary of the images and tell a story behind each image. Also when taking these images I was focusing on the camera settings to get the correct exposure in the image. To do this I put my camera settings on ISO 100, then aperture f/5.0, shutter speed 1/200 to get the correct lighting coming into the photograph. Then I went onto photoshop and adjusted the brightness and contrast to get the correct contrast in the image. Then changed the image to black and white because I think when the images are in black and white it shows more of a documentary.

In my fourth image I was capturing the main part of the protest and trying to capture the signs of the protest that is happing in the square. I was also trying to capture the people that is in the protest and getting a different composition to get a more of a documentary in the image. When taking these images I looked at my camera settings. So I put my camera settings on ISO 100, aperture f/5.0 and then shutter speed 1/125 to get the correct lighting in the image. Then I also went into photoshop and started to edit the image. I firstly adjusted the brightness and contrast to get the correct contrast in the image. Then changed the image to black and white to get a documentary aspect to the images.

Explain the process of what you did in this task

·        Did you enjoy the task? And why?

Yes I really enjoyed this task, because I really like how we had to go out and find the same subject matter. I found this documentary very interesting because I really like how the images are put into a square gird and you can see all the images in one. I also enjoyed capturing the different chairs around Nottingham.

·        What would you do to differently should you choose to do this again? And how would improve it as part of your project.

What I would of done differently if I did this task again. I would try and do different typology. So I would think about different once. To get a different idea of this task. So next time I would do door or window. Also in this one I did I would of done different composition in the image and try and be more creative in the images. To improve this I could of got more images of chairs more virarty of them to get a different perspective to the images.

Its makes me feel more inerested in cars because how he has taken the images they all have the same composition but different cars. So I am more interested in every car when it is taken in a typology. So I think it makes the image work better in a typology because it makes it more eye catching and shows more detail to each image.

·        Why do you think they have chosen that object?

I think the have chosen this image because they are many different model of cars. He wanted to show the card in his time and the models of the cars. So I think he wanted to show the area of the cars. So he decided to take do it in a typology.

 - What type of advertisements are in the magazine?

The advertisements in the vice magazine is more documentary, so for example health, also talking about different things in documentary. So vice is more about everyday life and documenting different articles. To show what is happening in real life. 

- What do the photographs look like in the adverts - where do you think they were produced?

The Photographs are more adverts for different products and everyday life. So i think the photographs are taken in different location to show a everyday life in the image and what life is actually like. So i think vice is trying to show a documentary of products and everyday life in there images. 

-  What do the photographs look like in the articles where do you think they were produced?

The photographs in the articles i think they stand out in the article because i think that the photographs composition stand out and makes the photograph more eye catching to look at. 

-  How are the articles written?

The articles are written out on one page in mini paragraphs with a bold title. So they are making it more eye catching because the first thing you look at in an article is the title. So you want to make it more interesting when you look at it. Then the images that link to the article is next to it filling a whole page. 

-  What are the articles about?

The article i looked at was called You’re a Nightmare By Richard Milward. 

- Who is the target audience?

I think the target audience is around 18 up wards, because it is more of an adult magazines. 

Vogue 

  -   What type of advertisements are in the magazine?

The advertisement in the vogue magazine is about advertising fashion and showing different brands while modeling the product. So it more about models showing off more expensive products. 

-      What do the photographs look like in the adverts - where do you think they were produced?

The photographs in the adverts look like really tall and pretty models, showing off the products. So it brings more people to buy the products because it is shown like this. I also think that the images are taken in the studio getting the perfect lighting and set up to show off the products they are modeling. 

-     What do the photographs look like in the articles – where do you think they were produced?

The photographs in the articles are covering the two pages of the magazine. To get your attention to the whole photograph and what product they are modeling. Also what i saw in the articles there isn’t a lot of writing because the don’t want to put loads of writing because they are trying to advertise the product that’s in the magazine.

-     How are the articles written?

The articles in the vogue magazine is only little, there isn't a lot of writing because they wont to show of the product that they are modeling and don’t want a lot of writing in there articles.  

-     What are the articles about?

 The articles about fashion and the product that they are modeling in the photographs, for example Gucci, Channel and Prada. So they are want to show there expensive products what young tall pretty models to get more people to buy the product. 

-   Who is the target audience?

I think the target audience for this magazine is more younger people and above so around 16 and above.

Martin Parr

- How was your series set up different to the original?

My series was set up in a different way to the original because before knowing the narrative we didn’t really know a lot about the images. So the images where in different series to the Original Martin Parr. So not knowing the narrative it made it very difficult to put it in the right series.  

- Why do you think you placed the images in those series? 

Because when i was looking at the images i was thinking of all the images and how could they link together to get the series. So i decided to put the images in this order because i thought all the images links together to make a series of the images. 

- Has this helped you understand more about putting images in a series? why? 

Yes this has helped me a lot because now i understand more about putting images in a series. Because now i understand how an image can be in a whole series.

Documentary Photography- Portrait

Inside - Outside Portraits

In my first image it was taken outside. Because i was focusing on portrait inside and outside photography. So i decided to get my mum and take an image of her outside. So i firstly checked my settings on my camera so it inst over or under exposed. So i put my camera on manual, then adjusted the aperture to. f/4.0 to get the right exposure coming in the camera. Then I changed the ISO 100 to get the right lighting. Then i adjusted the shutter speed to 1/25. After that i was thinking about the composition of the image and i wanted to layout the image with the nature of the image to show that it was taken outside. I also like how the image has a depth of field to the image how the background is out of focus and the bush is in focus. 

In my second image i was focusing on taking inside portrait. So i decided to get my mum to model in front of a mirror to get a different composition in the image and be more creative. So before taking these image i looked at the camera settings to get the correct exposure through out the image. So i firstly changed my Aperture to f/5.0, then the shutter speed to 1/25. then my ISO to 100 to get the correct contrast in the image. Then when i was taking the images I was thinking about the composition of the image and how i wanted layout the photograph. So i decided to get my mum and got the mirror and got her to stand in front of it.  I really like how this image came out and how the composition is in the image.

They achieved these images by using a digital camera and when taking these images. Using the same composition to get a documentary of children with there favourite toys.

Is kids with there favourite toys. So there are different kids around the world with different favourite toys. So she’s documenting a story of kids toys.

The country’s he went to. To get these images taxes, India, Malawi, China, Iceland, Morocco and Fiji.

What is being communicated and how is it communicated?

The communication in this documentary is to show that every kids have a different life style and some kids don’t have a lot of toys. Then some kids are being spoilt with loads of toys. So she’s trying to document the story of different lifestyles in these kids life’s.

How does it make you feel? Is this intentional? Or does it make the image work better? 

I think it makes the image work better. Because it shows a different story behind every image and shows a documentary of the children with there toys.

He used film to produce these images. So he took his image in the day and then developed his images at night to get a perfect image. He also printer on a 11 x 14 paper when printing off his images.

He was documenting Hong Kong and what it was like in his time around 1959 to get the right documentary and what he sees in his everyday life.

It was in Hong Kong, 1959

The communication of this documentary is what it was like in 1959 in Hong Kong and what the environment was like. So he trying to show a documentary of his everyday life in Hong Kong.

I think the image work better in a documentary because it shows a different story behind and they all link together when looking through the images.

He achieve the image with a digital camera. He used different effect and editing skills in these images to capture a different documentary in these images.

The Communication of this documentary is to show a different aspect of the love we leave behind so he showing different places.

I think it make the image work better because in his documentary it shows a different perspective to the whole of the images to show a documentary of his love we leave behind.
