PBS ZOOM Season 1

Does ANYONE have old VHS recordings of this season of ZOOM? It’s one of the biggest cases of PBS Kids Lost Media.

The show was never officially released, and GBH, its main production company, currently has no plans to release it. Most of the season hasn’t been broadcast since the spring of 2002. Currently, about 20 episodes from it are lost, and the only way to find them is to locate blank VHS tapes that someone recorded the episodes on back when they were airing.

Do recordings of the rest of this season still exist? Are they out there? I’m hoping this post will lead to them being found.

ZOOM Incomplete Episode #3: Episode 136

The third and final incomplete episode, this one features a cafe ZOOM where Jared makes several smoothies (pictured above), as well as a “ZOOMAlong” where Alisa and Zoe make a paper helicopter.

ZOOM Incomplete Episode #2: Episode 128

I’m kind of cheating with this one, so let me explain. Along with 132, it was one of the episodes given out by GBH that was posted on YouTube. While the original upload is gone, someone did upload a screen-recording of it…in about 12 parts, which is incredibly inconvenient. And since it’s a screen recording, the quality isn’t the best. So I’m labeling it partly missing.

The episode is a very good one, with segments featuring the ZOOMers playing water balloon toss, and making junk boats (pictured above). Jared also makes a paper-mache bowl. Like 132, this episode should never have been YouTube in the first place, but losing it in such good quality we’re unlikely to get it in again has still been frustrating.

ZOOM Partially Lost Episode #1: Episode 105

This episode was available back when GBH was giving them out, and an incomplete recording surfaced earlier this year, but the episode is still missing in its entirety. It featured a ZOOMsci challenge in which the ZOOMers make towers out of paper cups, as well as a ZOOMdo in which Keiko makes a string sculpture (pictured above).

ZOOM Lost Episode #19: episode 133

My apologies for the poor image. The segment it’s from—-a ZOOMdo where Lynese makes a yarn doll—-is the only one confirmed for the episode, and the only image from it is this low-resolution website picture.

Not too much else to say about this one. And with that, we’ve reached the end of the list of completely missing episodes. However, there are a couple of partly lost ones, which I’ll go over in my next few posts.

ZOOM Lost Episode #18

Until recently, this episode was on YouTube…but it really shouldn’t have been. Someone who checked it and episode 128 (more on that later) out from GBH posted them online, which was part of what led GBH to stop giving out episodes.

Nevertheless, it was nice to have the episode in pristine quality; and it’s a really good episode, featuring Jared making paper (pictured above—-easily his best ZOOMdo) and a ZOOMchat on popularity. So losing it has been quite frustrating. Hopefully it will be online again soon.

ZOOM Lost Episode #17

This episode featured the cast playing the game “wink” (pictured above), and a sci segment in which Lynese and Keiko make a salt pendulum.

ZOOM Lost Episode #16: Episode 129

This episode featured a cafe segment in which Pablo makes calzone; a ZOOMsci challenge in which the ZOOMers try to make a tower out of newspapers (pictured above), and the play “The Sweet Roll”.

ZOOM Missing Episode #15: Episode 127

Here’s another episode that was previously available through GBH, but is now lost again. Unlike 125, I was lucky enough to get to see this one. Although it wasn’t my all-time favorite episode, it had some memorable segments, such as Zoe making a strange-looking doll, the ZOOMers doing another egg drop experiment, and the game “back-to-back dash” (pictured above). Hopefully it will be found again soon.

ZOOM Missing Episode #14: Episode 126

This episode featured Jared making homemade ping-pong paddles, as well as a ZOOMsci challenge in which the ZOOMers make baking soda submarines. Also, I believe there’s a video called “Pinball Wizard”.

ZOOM Lost Episode #13: Episode 125

This episode stands out from all the ones I’ve mentioned so far in that it WAS previously available online. Until January 2023, GBH, the company that produces ZOOM, was allowing people to check out ZOOM episodes for free online, and this episode in question was one of them! Sadly, I didn’t get to see it before GBH stopped giving out the episodes.

A friend of mine did check it out, however, and it sounds like a pretty good one. In addition to the sci segment pictured above, in which Zoe and Lynese make a bridge out of straws, there some other cool segments, including a ZOOMdo in which Alisa shows how to make a friendship bracelet.

ZOOM Lost Episode #12: Episode 124

I can’t find any good pictures of anything that’s actually confirmed to be in this episode, but I know it featured this game. I also believe there was a ZOOMsci where Zoe, Lynese and David make a waterwheel, and supposedly a play called “Hot Dog” or “Hot Dog Experiment”.

This episode featured a Cafe ZOOM in which Pablo showed how to make baked apples. There was also an ubbi dubbi skit where Keiko pretended to be a magician.
