chapter five: a new low

september 9th 2025, 11:45pm

when you walk through the doors of the tau chi tau house, you are almost physically pushed out by the stench of weed and perspiration. yet, you persist, fighting your way back in. the surprisingly spacious living room is packed like a can of sardines. you and your two friends, hand in hand, squeeze past the sea of sweaty bodies into the house and through to the kitchen.

you finally make it to the kitchen and you exhale the breath that you have been holding in since you walked in. yuna is already cornering someone for drinks. you, on the other hand, are standing in the middle of the room with kazuha, scanning the area.

even from the kitchen, the music is too loud. you can feel the bass boom in your chest. you’re incapable of even hearing yourself think, let alone hearing your friend call out your name beside you, that is until she pokes your shoulder to finally get your attention.

“what are you doing?” she shouts over the music.

“nothing,” you answer in a sing-song way.

you turn back to look for yuna. you flinch back instinctively, when you see her right in front of your face. in the sudden motion, you stumble into the person standing just behind you. yuna apologizes to the person for you. she shoves the drinks into you and kazuha’s hands and quickly drags the two of you into the living room.

september 10th 2025, 12:30am

you’ve almost forgotten yourself. you’re too caught up in the music and laughing and dancing with your friends until you feel your phone vibrate in your back pocket. you pull out your phone to see a text message from your classmate, sohee.

kazuha notices that you stopped dancing. “you good?” she yells over the music, pausing as well.

“yeah, sohee just texted me.” you respond, unlocking your phone. yuna stops dancing as well when she sees the two of you. “he says he’s outside.”

“do you want us to come with you?” your face drops for a moment when you register kazuha’s question. you quickly try to pick yourself back up before she catches it.

but luckily for you, yuna recognizes the look in your eyes. she takes a hold of kazuha’s arm. “no,” she whines. “let’s dance.” she looks at kazuha with pleading eyes and the girl before her relents.

you mouth a quick thank you to yuna as she pulls kazuha back to the dancefloor. you slip through the crowd and make your way to the backyard, where you see sohee sitting at an old picnic bench with his friends. he waves you over once he spots you.

“hi,” you say coyly, sitting beside him on the seat he saved for you.

on the other side of the backyard, in a corner, taehyun is standing around with his friends. his eyes follow you as you move from the sliding glass door to the table that sohee and his friends were sitting on.

interrupting the conversation that surrounds him, he nods in your direction. “who is that?” he draws his friends' attention to the girl sitting down, adjusting the hem of her skirt as she does so.

they all turn to scrutinize you.

“why would we know that?” beomgyu squints. he takes a long sip from his red solo cup.

“don’t you claim to know everyone?” yeonjun retorts.

“when have i ever said that?”

“i’m pretty sure you’ve said that… like recently.” the older boy jeers.

“you’re delusional.”

taehyun rolls his eyes as the two of them continue to bicker. he turns his attention back to you throwing your head back in laughter at something someone in your group said. he takes note of how pretty your smile looks as you do so.

“if she’s talking to sohee, she might be a freshman.” kai answers.

taehyun hums absently in response.

“oh, that’s a new low.” yeonjun is pulled out of his argument with beomgyu.

“i didn’t say anything.” taehyun throws his hands up in defense.

“wait, so the cheating wasn’t a low, but dating a freshman is?” soobin finally speaks after minutes of watching his friends in amusement.

“well, i think they’re both lows.”

“can you guys stop talking about me like i’m not here?” taehyun snaps at them. “i was a freshman three months ago.”

“wait, aren’t you going through a breakup?” beomgyu asks him.

“three actually,” kai jokes. taehyun turns to glare at him and he turns his face.

“you know what they say,” taehyun starts. he veers back to you. “the best way to get over someone is to get under someone else.” he watches sohee get up and walk back inside the house, leaving you by yourself. “and there’s my opportunity.”

sohee excuses himself to get you drinks from the kitchen. you’re sitting by yourself, checking your phone. chaeryeong just texted you letting you know that she is watching you in the backyard. you are just about to respond when you feel a presence standing in front of you.

you look up to see “your target”, the guy from the pictures chaeryeong shared with you, standing in front of you, hands in his pockets. “hey,” he says, casually leaning forward.

you lock your phone, setting it down beside you. “um, can i help you?”

“i saw you sitting alone, and i thought you might want company?”

“oh, i’m–” you start to speak but you are swiftly interrupted by him sitting down beside you. you’re almost amused by his gall but you play along.

“i don’t think i’ve seen you around here.” he leans back in his seat. “what’s your name?”

“i’m yn,” you respond slowly.

“pretty,” he smiles. you can’t help but smile a little too, but you quickly gather your resolve when you remember your mission. “i’m taehyun.” he stretches his hand out towards you.

at that moment, a swarm of people rush outside, circling around the ping pong table. taehyun winces. “do you want to go somewhere quieter?”

“sorry, um,” you begin. you glance towards the door to see sohee struggling to get through the people standing there. “taehyun, right? i think i might have given you the wrong idea. i’m actually just waiting for my friend.”

and conveniently sohee makes his way from the door to your side, with a drink in his hand. “hi,” you stand up abruptly and take the drink from him. “do you want to go meet my friends?” you ask sohee.

you don’t let him answer before you’re dragging back inside the house. sohee shoots taehyun an apologetic look before he disappears through the door and the older boy is left alone, dejected.
