[ My thoughts on this particular topic are kind of jumbled, so here's a bunch of half-baked ideas:

Grew up in an orphanage, much like in the Denny O'Neil series.

Was kind of a difficult kid. Blunt, insubordinate and too smart for his own good. Not the easiest guy to get along with.

Doesn't really have a strong sense of family or community, since he didn't get along with his caregivers, and feels ill-equipped to deal with domestic affairs as a result. (Basically, he thinks he'd be a bad dad.) ]
