It's late May 2024, the ice hockey world championship is wrapping up, and in another universe the versions of Dylan and Connor from @msmargaretmurry's amazing The Next Next One have an important conversation on a bridge in Helsinki. So I walked across it to see if the veil between worlds would've been thinner this evening.
Now, these pictures were taken around 22:40 (22 is 10PM for those of you 24h-challenged), so there's a bit more light than there would've been at somewhere around 2AM when the conversation actually takes place, but not too much. We're currently in the part of the year when we never enter proper night - right now the darkest it gets is nautical twilight (wikipedia's site on types of twilight is actually really good and interesting and one of my favourite sites daylight.website visualizes it very well!) so besides all the city lights the sky would also still retain some light near the horizon. For reference, a photo I took at home around 23:40:
It's a bit darker overall, but the sky is still light to the west.
Pitkäsilta from the east side, and a short informational text about it. The name is not in fact because of how long it is (not very), but because of the large difference in social status depending on which side of the bridge you lived on.
I don't know which side of the bridge Dylan and Connor were (will be?) standing on, but personally I think they'd be better off looking west towards Töölönlahti (bottom pictures) than east towards the sea (top pictures). The new bridge construction and, just, Merihaka in general, makes for a less nice and more boring view.
