It was quite funny, actually.” Nate shrugged his shoulders and finally opened his eyes to look at his husband lying down next to him. “You should’ve seen her face when I told her that my husband doesn’t mind because he likes my long hair.” He chuckled and ran a hand through his fringe, messing it all up. “You do, right? I mean, it would be a shame if you don’t, ‘cause I’m definitely not gonna cut my precious hair anytime soon.”

“and you think it doesn’t terrify me?” nate scoffed and sat behind his desk. “nothing is ever enough for them, but guess what? i’m fucking tired of playing by their goddamn rules.” he said, suddenly smiling at his boyfriend like he had just come up with the most brilliant plan in the world. his father wasn’t going to like it, but did he care? not at all.

“so yeah, sucks to be them because we’re not breaking up, sweetcheeks,” he announced, still smiling like nothing his father had told him was a big deal at all. yes, maybe he was a little bit terrified, but that didn’t mean he was going to let some stupid little fear stop him. “and even if you want to break up with me, the answer is still no.”

that being said, nate sighed and opened his laptop, thinking about all the petty things they could do to annoy their fathers. he wanted to start with something small, almost insignificant – something that wouldn’t look like they were trying to defy them.

“anyway, let me send this one last email and then we can go out for lunch, okay? let’s forget about this bullshit for a while.” he said, trying not to let out a malicious laugh while he typed. “also, i guess now is when i mention that daddy said we should avoid being caught by paparazzis if we go out.”

the original concept for this one literally started with me listening to nct dream’s chewing gum while chewing gum and for some reason it included nate singing it to his little cousin,, but then i was like NO, NICO WOULD KICK HIS ASS so yeah,, no chew-chew-chew-chew chewing gum for my nathaniel, i guess!!! also i’m so sorry this is such a huge mess shdjsd

And I’m sure she’s having lots of fun right now.” His lips curved in a smile and he took a sip of his drink, while Yugyeom just sighed and started looking around, telling him how much of a fucking idiot he was. “You won’t find her here. She’s with Nico.” This time, his best friend didn’t even try to hide his disappointment. “She’s six, Gyeom. He won’t do something mean… I hope.” Smack! Yugyeom had slapped his arm —hard— before disappearing because ‘he needed to save that poor girl from that monster’. “Don’t call him that, asshole! He’s not that bad!”

Nate thought his friend was being unnecessarily dramatic — and then he received a text from Nico complaining about the little girl, and he sighed. Okay, maybe leaving his little cousin with Nico hadn’t been his brightest idea, sue him. “Fuck my entire existence.” He groaned, fixing his hair as he went straight to the quietest room in the mansion his parents had rented for this party — the same place where he had last seen his little cousin and his boyfriend. “Hey, babe.” He smiled, trying really hard not to laugh at the look on Nico’s face. Naomi, on the other hand, seemed unaffected as she squealed and started running in his direction when he saw him. God, she was the cutest little thing. “Sorry for disappearing for so long. I lost a bet and I had to be Yugyeom’s wingman. Traumatic experience, I’m never doing that again.” He fake-shivered and picked up Naomi in his arms. “Anyway, did you guys have fun?” He asked, kissing his cousin’s soft cheek and waiting for her answer. And seriously, it wasn’t that Nate didn’t think Nico had it in him to be nice to a child, but he couldn’t deny that he was very surprised when Naomi started giggling and telling him how she thought his friend was nice. “Oh, really? Tell me about it, Nana. What did you guys do?” 

According to her, they had talked about ‘a lot of cool grown-up things’, and she even told him that Nico was smarter than him. “Oh, come on. Did you ask her to tell me that? That’s low even for you, Nico.” He pointed his finger, ready to accuse him even if the statement wasn’t exactly a lie. But no, it hadn’t been Nico at all. Naomi was quick to admit those were her words, and that was also how she revealed the truth about the gum. “So you’re telling me he shared his gum with you, huh? That is amazing, Nana.” Another kiss was pressed to her cheek before Nate let her down and asked her to go play with the other kids for a while because he had to talk to Nico in private.

“So… care to explain why you called my cousin a ‘little bitch kid’ when it seemed like you guys were getting along just fine? And, by the way, I know she’s not the kind to do things like obnoxiously chomp on her gum so I’d like to know the truth, babe.” He grinned, plopping himself down on his boyfriend’s lap. “Perhaps you needed an excuse to see my cute face? You should’ve just said it, dumbass.”

Nate finds himself almost scoffing at those words, but he decides to save it for later. First of all, because they’re at a party and he’s not in the mood to do something that will end up causing an argument. And second, because he’s trying not to be an asshole — not while they’re in front of their families. “Oh, shush!” He smiles at his ‘boyfriend’ and rolls his eyes in a playful manner, all part of his smitten boy act. “He’s such a charmer, really,” he says, reaching for Nico’s hand and bringing it to his lips to give it a soft kiss. His aunt seems to be buying it, and Nate feels guilty for doing this to her, especially when she gives Nico a genuine smile and tells him how lucky he is to have her nephew as his boyfriend. Great, now he’s gonna have to deal with Nico being an annoying piece of shit about it — just what he needed to make this evening even shittier than it already was! “Okay Auntie Claire, that’s enough!” He giggles, letting himself look as embarrassed as he feels. He knows that if he doesn’t stop her, she’s gonna end up telling the other unnecessary details about teenage Nate and his stupid crush on him. He can’t let that happen, obviously. “I’m afraid we have to go, dad must be looking for us! But give me a call when you’re back from Monaco, alright? We can catch up over lunch at your favourite restaurant, my treat.”

“Ha, wouldn’t you like to know, pretty boy?” Nate smirked, feeling confident because he knew for a fact he looked freakin’ good that night – and it seemed his plan to get Nico’s attention was working, so things were looking great for him. “We’re at a party, of fucking course I’m gonna be loud. Just like everybody else who doesn’t hate fun, duh.” He said, rolling his eyes as he stopped dancing, noticing the way people were staring at them. Great, all of a sudden he was the one looking stupid. He didn’t mind the attention at all, but Nico wasn’t having a good time – and if someone had to play the inconsiderate boyfriend in public, it certainly wasn’t going to be him.

“Let’s go to the lounge. Is that okay with you? We can stay there until you decide to stop being so fucking boring and actually dance with me.” He stated, grabbing his fake boyfriend’s hand to drag him outside. More specifically, to the bar. “Let’s have a few drinks, yeah? Maybe if you’re lucky I’ll let you find out how loud I can be in bed.” He gave him a cheeky wink and turned around to make eye contact with the bartender, not daring to look back at Nico, too scared to see the obvious rejection in his eyes. What the eye doesn't see the heart doesn't grieve over and all that bullshit, whatever. “A dry martini, please.”

Nate couldn’t deny the fact that Nico’s sudden question had him wanting to drop the documents he was holding, yet he still didn’t look up at him. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” He said, flipping through the pages of an extremely boring deal he’d been working on. His father had finally allowed him to take part in Kang Atlantic’s latest deal with a smaller company, which meant he was satisfied with their fake relationship act — but Nate couldn’t say he felt the same way about it. He did try to make it work, but it had been in vain. It didn’t really matter how hard Nate tried, Nico wasn’t ever going to change his ways, and Nate had to accept the fact that he would never like him back — so he did. “There’s nothing between us. You made that very clear. Multiple times.” He pointed out, and this time he decided to make eye contact with him. At this point, he had nothing to lose. “Why are you looking at me like that?” An exasperated sigh escaped his lips while he checked the time on his Rolex, even if it was only pretend since the only thing on his schedule was watching movies on Netflix and eating his bodyweight in ice cream. “C’mon, I need to attend to personal matters in approximately fifteen minutes, so please say whatever you need to tell me and leave.”
