it shouldn’t be called ‘peter pan’. it should be called ‘wendy’. that story is about a girl who hits puberty, who shares a bedroom with her brothers and plays at being pirates, and is told “today’s the day you grow up”. and she’s a kid, and she’s so terrified of puberty, she dreams that night of a world in which no one has to grow up. and it speaks so powerfully to girls who are expected to be women by the world, who feel like children, but they’re on the cusp of something.
