“ The Hedge witches have just left, ”    Maerose assures Zelda when she hears her walking into the room. It could have been anyone, really, but she knows this specific step by heart now. One gets observant over the years. The dark haired witch looks up from where she is seated by the window; it is her favored spot, truly, just being albe to look outside soothes her soul.    “ I’m afraid Gryla took your last bottle of whiskey. ”    She shakes her head, remembering how naturally she had picked up the bottle just before leaving. A smirk appears on her lips.    “ She also asked if I would be leaving, too. I believe she offered for me to join her. ”    Truthfully, Maerose is quite sure she has just begun to enjoy the company of another adult.

“ I politely explained that my place is here. ”

it’s the way to her heart, flowers. flowers that remind her of her sisters, of a better time. when she didn’t have to worry about anything and could just exist. times are different now but she still takes pleasure in caring and looking at flowers.    ❝ oh, look at those. ❞    she smirks and lets her fingers trace one of the delicate petals.    ❝ did you pick them yourself? or did you maybe grow them yourself? i won’t be disappointed if you didn’t. it is a lovely gift either way. thank you very much. ❞

the sight before her is none she appreciated. seeing the other witch so broken, only half of herself, it is something that scares mae but she refuses to show it. the last thing abby needs now is for her to get more negative emotions.     . . .     “i think i’m losing myself again.” abigail ( @ordinaryheroines ) confesses and it breaks maerose’s heart     . . .     she briefly hesitates but eventually allows herself to reach out and place a hand on the other woman’s shoulder, testing the waters. only when she’s sure it’s not unwelcome does she move closer, reaching for her hands.    “listen to me, focus on my voice. i will not allow for you to lose yourself. you hear me?”    warm eyes search for hers, needing to see that she got her attention. there’s only so much she can do.    “you’re not going to lose yourself as long as i am here to remind you exactly of who you are. i know this isn’t easy,”    an understatement, but the truth. they are both more than familiar with pain and loss and disappointment and maerose is sure that is part of why they work so well together. they understand each other, maybe better than they both realize yet. 

the dark haired witch cups abby’s face, attempting to make her even more aware of her warmth.    “but you’re not alone. i’m here. our friends are. please, don’t give up on us just yet. let us in, let me in.”    she is almost begging now, as if she is afraid abby might just disappear if she doesn’t try hard enough and is it far from reality? oh, she wouldn’t be able to bear it.

“ for the love of nature would you please be quiet for a second? ”    slender digits rub along the bridge of her nose. a headache threatens to make an appearance but she works a little of her magic to keep it at bay.    “ you use so many words yet little of them are useful. so stop, take a breath and try again. ”    though the witch doesn’t expect an improvement, it doesn’t seem like it is that kind of situation.    “ or do i need to tie your tongue? ”    maerose arches a brow, wiggling her fingers a little as if trying to make a point.

a sigh. maerose moves away from the window, it’s getting darker anyway and there is not much for her to see. unsure of how long they have been sitting here now, she flicks her wrists in order to get a glass from the cupboard and the scotch to pour herself a glass. tea might have been the better idea but there is a point when tea isn’t enough.    “ i dislike waiting as much as you do, but i doubt anything is going to happen tonight. unless, you want to make the first move. ”    she sits down, leaning back in her seat and crossing her legs, and just looks at the other woman.    “ i am with you, the choice is yours. ”

“ i have always found it to be rather offensive whenever someone would refer to a woman as a witch because of her impossible behavior. ”    maerose shakes her head, stirring her cup of tea. it is beside the point, of course, they are sitting her for entirely different reasons, but it is something she wants to make clear.    “ you see, most of us are well-behaved, some... are unhinged. you see it with the mortals as well. surely i am not the first to tell you. ”   impssible to think that she is the first witch this young woman has ever met.    “ tell me, are you in need of a witch? some guidance maybe? ”

[ @ordinaryheroines​ :   abigail &. maerose ] “You don’t even realize what you’ve done, do you?”

“What I have done?”    Mae’s eyes turn purple with anger, something that’s rarely to be seen on her. She is known to be a quiet and composed witch, one who rarely lets anger overcome her ( these days ). But an accusation so undeserves cannot be ignored.    “ You clearly did not have it under control. ”    Maerose hisses and it is enough to close her eyes for a moment and take a deep breath. This will not be an argument lead by yelling at each other. With anger, magic has the chance to act uncontrolled and if there is one thing she will always try to avoid it is an outlet of wild magic. The darkhaired woman gets up, towering over the other. It isn’t something she usually does, not really caring about appearing intimidating. And while she knows Abigail isn’t necessarily someone who might be intimidated by her, it is still an act that comes natural.

“ Would you have prefered for me to let them get away with it? Should I have just made some tea and watch as they go on? ”    She titls her head, arms crossing over her chest. And then she takes another step forwards, having to hold herself back though.   “ I will not apologize for my actions. I have no reason to. You, on the other, could show some more respect. I don’t need you to like what I did, but I will not have you use that tone with me. ”

placing a hand on the other’s shoulder, maerose places a plate with some pie right in front of her guest.    “ there is nothing wrong in trying. ”    she assures them, before taking a seat across from them.    “ things don’t always work out the first time, you shouldn’t be so hard on yourself. ”

“ did you know that, for a few decades, i have been a rather popular author. no one has known it was me, but that is to be expected when you use an alias. two, to be more precise. ”    she stirrs her hot tea, looking down with a rather proud smile on her lips. she has been both man and woman in the written word, the one merely out of need than actual choice.    “some of the finest medical books about herbs have been written by me. and on the side i used to write for the joy of a female audience.”
