the way stede asks him, upon meeting, if he works for blackbeard. and ed has to stop and consider it for a moment. as if blackbeard is this whole separate entity that isn't really them at all ( because that's exactly the truth of it ).  how freeing it must have felt for ed to have just a moment where he wasn't blackbeard, and could just EXIST without expectation. they've clearly been wondering about it ever since : what life would be like without blackbeard hanging over him like a shadow. once he understands that's an option and not just a pipe dream. that he can have an end other than to be felled in battle.

IT REMINDS ME OF A CAPTAIN FLINT MONOLOGUE.

odysseus, on his journey home to ithaca, was visited by a ghost. the ghost tells him that once he reaches his home, once he slays all his enemies and sets his HOUSE in order, he must do one last thing before he can rest. the ghost tells him to pick up an oar and walk inland, and keep walking until somebody mistakes that oar for a shovel, for that would be the place that no man had ever been troubled by the sea. and that’s where he’d find peace. in the end, that’s all i want. to walk away from the sea and find some peace.

and season two then begins with them as some TWISTED amalgamation of edward and blackbeard. unable to tell where one ends and the other begins. and he no longer believes that peaceful end is possible. the only death for a devil is violence. they had a taste of what it was like to just be ed, and the absence of it is like a phantom limb. not just mourning stede, but himself as well. and then it comes full circle, and edward has to reckon with the things that blackbeard has done in the interum ; THAT HE HIMSELF HAS DONE. and it frightens them to wonder if he'll ever truly be rid of him.

WHICH REMINDED ME OF THIS MONOLOGUE.

[ ... ] it was as if the sea had conjured that man out of nothing and then taken him back for some unknowable purpose. when i first met mr. gates and he asked me my name, i feared the man i was about to create. i feared that someone born of such dark fates would CONSUME ME, were i not careful. and i was determined only to wear him for awhile and then dispose of him when his purpose was complete. and i thought of that story. am i ready to let him go? the truth is, every day i've worn that name, I'VE HATED HIM A LITTLE MORE. i've been ready to return him to the sea for a long time.

and that's where we're at now. while there is much overlap between the two, edward wants nothing more than to return blackbeard to the sea. if such a thing is even possible remains to be seen. they may very well be too deeply entangled. and hacking off such a part of himself that he hasn't fully come to terms with parting ... it'll just leave them wanting.

ed has a bad back and an even worse knee that act up every once in a while, with increasing regularity as he gets older. it's especially rough the morning following a raid. would be bad during said raids as well, but there's a sort of fog that falls over them in the heat of battle. also, he has a knack for knowing when a storm's brewing because their joints start aching.

anyway, all this to say give ed a massage :')

multiple partners are fine ! ed has a pretty casual outlook on sex as a whole, and his general philosophy is just that so long as everyone involved is into it, not much else matters. at the peak of their blackbeard days, he's had more than his fair share of threesomes and group sex. they couldn't keep count if they wanted to. i will say though, ed typically does prefer a one on one experience. if it's with someone he cares about, that will be more likely. and even if it's not ... ed teach is a needy little princess lmao. he needs to have all the attention in the room on him or else he'll keel over. this dissipates as they get older though, and gets to the point where ed's tired of the attention.

not to be incredibly predictable, but all different variations of doggy style. which i desperately hate the name of ! face down, ass up, both when topping and bottoming. it lets you go extra deep at the right angle, allows the one giving to get a good grip on their partner's hair, perfect for spanking, for tugging their hips in sharply. edward is a big fan from both sides of things. unfortunately it's a bit more difficult for him to bottom in that position as they get older because of a bad back and knee, but they're also just a big fan of sex as a whole. they have and will try anything once.
