Weber's "The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism" did incalculable damage to the scientific socialist movement by (at least seemingly) tying the preconditions of Capitalism to a determinate cultural instantiation

#theres a concrete difference between 'X culture was predisposed to the conditions of capitalism' (editors note: why?)#& 'capitalism is because of X concrete cultural preconditions'#'seemingly' plays a big role here! its debatable as to whether the text actually reinforces thay idea #but its pretty inarguable that a naive reader would interpret that from the title alone #'dont judge a book by its cover' wouldn't be a powerful invective if that tendency wasnt already-actual
