INDY Daily: N.C. Bill Would Ban Local Governments From Regulating Tree Removal

It’s Tuesday, May 11

Good morning, readers.

I've gotten a few emails from you all about a bill that would prohibit cities and counties from adopting and enforcing ordinances regulating tree removal from private property. And the bill just so happens to be on the House calendar today for its third reading.

House Bill 496 is as bad as it sounds. It gives developers free license to cut down trees on any site unless a local government approaches the General Assembly to ask state lawmakers to put a stop to it.

Trees serve important purposes related to preventing soil erosion and keeping local water supplies clean. I don't need to tell you that they also make towns and cities more beautiful. This bill represents yet another attack on local governments and the environment that we've come to expect from lawmakers (mostly from Republicans, but this bill has co-sponsors who are Democrats) in recent years.

There's a website through which you can send a letter to lawmakers to ask them not to pursue this bill. I'll keep you updated on its progress.

Orange County

Orange County manager Bonnie Hammersley released a $279 million budget proposal last week. It includes a three-cent property tax hike. Chapel Hill's proposed budget also included a three-cent property tax increase. Renee joins the RLI Executive Team at an integral time for the organization as they continue to push forward into the final year of their three-year strategic plan, which has an overall goal of strengthening RLI’s position as The Voice of Land. As a key pillar of that plan, land professionals can expect to see a full offering of newly updated Land University (LANDU) courses in 2019 as well as a brand new Recreational Land Real Estate course added to the program. Members of the organization will continue to see an increase in awareness among consumers of the RLI brand and will also benefit from the strengthening of RLI’s local chapters, both being major goals of the strategic plan.

In response, RLI’s CEO Aubrie Kobernus, MBA, RCE, released the following statement upon Renee’s election: “The RLI Board of Directors and I could not be more fortunate to have such a dedicated and knowledgeable addition joining us in our mission to further position RLI as The Voice of Land in the industry. We look forward to another success-filled year of bringing our members exceptional expertise, camaraderie, and resources to help them become the best in the business.”

The election also adds two At-Large Directors to the RLI Board. In an effort to give members a stronger voice into the direction of the organization, the addition of these elected seats were implemented in 2017. Out of the seven candidates running for an At-Large Director position, RLI is proud to announce the election of Bart Miller, ALC, of Mason & Morse Ranch Company in Glenwood Springs, CO, and David Hitchcock, ALC, of Coldwell Banker Commercial Saunders Real Estate, LLC, in Lakeland, FL, onto the 2019 RLI Board of Directors.

The folks at Cedarridge Ranch put high value on the personal care they provide every horse and horse owner that stay here. For more than 20 years their knowledgeable, friendly, commited and hardworking team and family have been managing and improving the boarding facility. This has provided great opportunities to get to know many horses and people.

The ranch’s primary focus is to provide a home where horses can be their happiest and healthiest. The Johnsons have a holistic and natural-centered approach to the care they provide. They believe in the concept that healthy soil creates healthy pasture, which results in healthy horses. They also believe in being good stewards of the land and actively improving the land and property for the well being of all life.

The facility has a heated barn with abundant, natural lighting and 11 Dutch-door-style, rubber-matted stalls. Access is available to the lighted 35×150 indoor arena, and larger outdoor arena with excellent footing in both. You’re also welcome to use the round pens, outdoor wash rack, tack rooms, and trails (both on and off of the property).

Your horse will enjoy being stabled in a large, bedded stall with dutch doors, daily turnout, and daily stall cleaning. If you prefer, your horse can stay outside in a paddock.

For horse owners, the facility provides electrical RV/trailer hookups.
