hi ana!

in a modern setting, what do you think katara and zuko would choose as careers?

honestly this question came at the perfect time because i'm currently trying to decide what careers zuko and katara would have in a bollywood-inspired modern au i'm writing (i'm so excited for zutara dhamaka, yall)

i know the easy solution is to make katara a doctor and i've done that myself if i'm writing a one-shot or something quick but to be honest, just as i don't think katara would be a healer in lok, i don't think she'd be a doctor. healing is something katara's always done out of necessity, so i doubt she'd necessarily choose it as a career. i can really see her going into politics, maybe as a congresswoman (kind of like AOC) or governor, to fight for those who need her help.

i'm not entirely decided but whatever career katara would choose would absolutely be something that allows her to help as many people as possible, and utilises her natural oratorical skill, resourcefulness and determination, and for me politics seems the most obvious answer. but someone suggested to me that katara could also be part of an NGO and i like that too!

(if anyone has any other ideas, please feel free to chime in. i'd love to hear more about this.)

as for zuko, even though he becomes the fire lord, i actually don't see him working in politics in a modern world. it feels more like something he did out of duty and a desire to reform his country, rather than because he enjoys politics or wished for power. i can see him becoming a lawyer (maybe international or family law? ohmygod zuko helping abused children get away from their families - damn i want to write a fic about this now) or working in the corporate world, taking over his family business.

i vibe with a lot of careers for zuko - law, business, working in coding or hacking (i once read a fic about this based on him being the blue spirit and it was very cool), game design, running a tea shop... i'm okay with pretty much anything so long as he's happy, tbh.

anyway, modern zutara would really be That power couple. no choice but to stan, methinks.
