Honestly everytime I notice their behaviour towards poc I'm so turned off
They're not who they try to be
Maybe they don't mean it but just the thought that no matter how much white people seem to understand me at the end of the day they don't
Idk if this makes sense but even those who claim they stand for us like må don't realise they're not much better than the others
That definitely makes sense. I can't imagine how soul crushing it is to always see racism in your anti-racist white allies when you look close enough. People aren't built to withstand such profound and unrelenting emotional suffering. If it was me, I'd feel like my only choice to see the world as generally okay place was to not look at anyone too closely, including the allies that claim I can depend on them. Which is incredibly lonely.
Limp-dicked liberalism has become the norm in celebrity culture. Which, of course, makes it the most flattering political stance to have. Likability = mass appeal = marketability = popularity = profit. So avoiding overt racism (the kind that an average, uneducated white person could identify) isn't incentivized by personal ethics. It's incentivized by avoiding social consequences, like being "cancelled" and losing sponsorships. If profit is the reason for a someone's anti-racism, not moral outrage, then their "activism" will serve themselves, not POC. It's effectively meaningless.
(Side note: Corporate sponsors do their due diligence. However, they don't care about bigotry until the public does, because then it fucks with profit and thats what matters. Activism cannot be effective and motivated by capitalism. It has to be disruptive at the cost of an ally's likability. Thats how you know its not self-serving).
When Maneskin use some round-about, media trained phrase like "we think everyone should be treated equally and not judged based on their identity" does it seem like they mean it? Sure. (But this is all an option coming from a gullible white woman so) Does that make their activism meaningful? Eh. The fact that its coming from the right place would positively inform their actions if they were to do something, but they're not.
Especially noticeable has been Maneskin's deafening silence on Palestine after their activism for Ukraine. (Brought up by an anon, who's ask I saved to drafts where it disappeared grr). It's not like the Palestinian genocide is happening on a land so distant Maneskin can't speak on it. Siracusa (Italian city closest to Gaza Strip) to Gaza (primary target of IDF) is 1,156.84 miles. Udine (Italian city closest to Ukrainian border) to Kyiv (Ukrainian capital, initial IRA invasion site) is 849.57 miles. So Ukraine is only 307.27 miles closer to Italy than Palestine is (measured by the locations most relevant to each conflict). For reference, the state of Maine, which rates 39 out of 50 for size, is 320 miles long. 307 miles is nothing.
