Education the way that I remember it when I was in school

Growing up in the 80's and 90's I remember the 3 R's. Reading, 'Riting, and 'Rithmetic. We were taught the 5 W's, too (Who, what, when, where, and why). We learned cursive writing is what we had to do when I was in 3rd grade in elementary school. I remember watching some of the following educational shows: Square One, 321 Contact, Double Dare, After school special, Where In The World Is Carmen San Diego, etc. We were taught Common Sense in school. Common Core was not even thought of when I was in elementary school. We did use computers when I was growing up in elementary school. There was no internet, social media wasn't even thought of, and the only spell check we did is when we manually wrote the correct word, phrase, and punctuation, typing it on the computer with sentences that had fragments, run-ons, comma splices, etc. For me that was a big help for me writing complete sentences. There were other kids who used "hooked on phonics" who had problem reading on grade level. There were other kids who had a speech teacher, who helped them with pronunciation, the resources were there and the teachers made sure the students got the help that needed in order to succeed when I was in elementary school. Basically, computer was strictly used for learning and learning only when I was in elementary school. For fun, our teacher let us play Wheel of Fortune on computer and The Oregon Trail only if everyone had their homework and classwork done.
Nowadays, a good education comes from either homeschooling, which I think is a wonderful thing and I can't knock it and K-12 online which is advertised online. None of this was thought of when I was going to elementary school. From K-6 grade, we stayed in one classroom when I was in elementary school. We were taught 7 subjects which varied from grades the following: Reading, Math, Social Studies, Science, Language Arts, Music, and Art. We got both a letter grade and a number grade. E- Excellent, G- Good, S- Satisfactory, and U- Unsatisfactory, 1- Excellent, 2- Good, 3- Satisfactory, and 4- Unsatisfactory or Poor. In elementary school from K-2 grade I got the letter grades above (E- Excellent, G- Good, S- Satisfactory, and U- Unsatisfactory). From 3 grade-6th grade, I got grades of A, B, C, D, and U along with the number grades (1- Excellent, 2- Good, 3- Satisfactory, and 4- Unsatisfactory or Poor). We always got progress reports for each marking period, (there were 4 marking periods) from 7th-12th grade we just got letter grades and moved to different rooms. Teachers and parents had parent teacher conferences when need be, especially if the parent or parents child or children were on a verge of failing. The progress reports were to make sure that the parent or parents knew if their child or children were doing well or not so well in their classes. Teachers encouraged the parent or parents to continue to encourage their child or children to continue to do summer reading programs, quiz them on homework to help their kids prepare for tests or quizzes, tell their kids to continue their study habits. This would help their child or children be prepared for harder subjects when they get passed to the next grade and when he or she graduate from high school they will understand why taking good notes and studying really "paid off."

HOW EXAMS ARE GRADED IN MY COUNTRY
Hey guys, little by little I’m trying to be more active here. Unfortunately I’ve been super busy which kept me away from social media. In this post I thought I would explain the grading system we use here in my country (Argentina), which is very different than the one used in th US or in Europe.
So, in elementary school the grading system is pretty much “excellent (90% to 100%), very good(80% to 89%), good (60% to 79%), satisfactory(40% to 59%), non satisfactory(1% to 39%)”. 
In high school the system changes to 1 to 10, being 1 the lowest grade and 10 the highest. In order to pass, a student must get a 6 (meaning a 60% of the exam must be done right).
In university it changes again, we still use the 1 to 10 grading but this time a student passes with a 4, The porcentage and grading is this:
1 to 29% = 1
30 to 47% = 2
48 to 59% = 3
60 to 65% = 4
66 to 70% = 5
71 to 76% = 6
77 to 85% = 7
86 to 93% = 8
94 to 99% = 9
100% = 10.
Also, in university students are classified into 3 categories: promotional (promocional), regular (also called regular in Spanish) and external (libre). These categories are per subject (for example you can be promotional in one, regular in another and libre/external in another).
PROMOTIONAL (PROMOCIONAL):
Being promotional means that the student must pass both midterms with a 7 or a higher grade, the student must also do 2 extra assignments which also has to pass with a 7 or higher grade; and he/she must attend at least to 70% of the lectures. If the student achieves all these conditions, he or she gets a “direct promotion” in public universities (here public universities are free, a student doesn’t have to pay in order to attend one, everyone who has graduated from high school can go to university), direct promotion means that the student will be rewarded by not having a final exam. 
In private universities (the ones you have to pay to attend, meaning classrooms are less crowded - 30 to 40 students per classroom vs 80 to 150 in public universities- and teaching is more personalized) direct promotion is rarely done and students don’t have midterms like in public universities, in the private ones students generally have 4 or 5 exams per subject along the year but the promotion rules are the same (he/she must pass every exam and the 2 extra assignment with 7 or more and attend at least to 70% of the lectures), most of times students in private universities get to do what we call “coloquio” instead of not having a final exam, coloquio is a much easier exam (genereally one topic) that the student should be able to pass easily also with a 7 or higher grade. 
If the student is not able to complete all these conditions in exams and extra assignments grading (including the coloquio in private universities) and attendance, he/she automatically becomes a regular student.
REGULAR:
A regular student is the one who must pass all the exams (2 midterms in public universities or 4 to 5 exams in private universities) with a grade of 4 or higher and he/she must sit for a final exam which must be passed also with a 4 or higher grade. The student must aslo have at least 50% of attendance. Being regular means that they don’t have to do the 2 extra assignments promotional students must do. Regular students also have the chance of having  make up tests in case of faillig, since public universities have midterms (2 exams) the student is allowed to make up for one exam, in private universties they can make up for 2. If the student isn’t able to achieve this, he/she automatically becomes an external student (libre).
EXTERNAL STUDENT (LIBRE):
An external student is the one who couldn’t achieve any of the conditions I already mentioned or who chose willingly to be an external student, many students choose this condition because they work and aren’t able to attend to class or don’t have time to do homework or extra assignments. The external student is not allowed to attend the lectures and is not allowed to sit for the exams, he/she only sits for the final exam. However, as easy and convenient it sounds, it’s not. In the final exam, external students not only must know the complete syllabus but they must also do an extra activity (meaning they have less time than the regular students), that activity must be solved first, then handed over and they are allowed to continue with the exam (all in the same day), the activity must be passed with at least a 7 in order for the professors to continue correcting the rest of the exam; once the student passes the extra activity (if that porcentage is not achieved, the entire exam is considered as failed), he/she must pass the exam with a 4 or higher grade.
In the case of regular students, after they pass the midterms they have 2 years to sit for the final, once the final is passed the subject is considered as completed/finished (in promotional student’s case, they must have passed the coloquio in order to be finished, If they haven’t they must sit for a final as a regular student). However, some subjects require that certain subjects from previous years must be completed (having passed the final exam) in order to attend it and to sit for midterms in the case of public universities, or any exam in private ones. However, most professors allow their students to attend and sit for the midterms or the 4 or 5 exams even though they haven’t passed the previous needed subject’s final, but they are not allowed to sit for the finals unless they pass the previous year’s finals. For example: let’s say you have History I in one year and History II the next year; depending on the professor and the uinversity’s rules, If you passed all the exams in History I then you have 2 years to sit for its final (unless you had completed the promotional requirements, then the subject it’s completed - finished), you are allowed to attend to History II, in most cases you are also allowed to sit for the exams but you can’t sit for the final in order to finish/complete the subject until you pass History I’s final. If the sudent isn’t able to pass or, better said, complete/finish the subject (pass the final) within 2 years they become an external student in the subject and If they were attending History II they become external in that one too, meaning they have to sit for a final but they must do the extra activity externals do and they are evaluated according to their condition.

Can I Sue My Auto Insurance Company?
In 2005, as part of our divorce agreement, my ex and I decided to keep the same auto insurance but under separate policies. We had been with this company for years. My policy was on auto pay meaning that the payments were taken directly from my account. He walked in to pay his. About 6 months after the divorce, I was pulled over for a routine traffic stop and was told I was driving an uninsured vehicle. Without insurance, my registration was also invalid. Both tickets totaled 1K. My car was taken into impound. I checked and found the officer was correct. On good terms with my ex, I told him what happened. He said for the past 6 months, each time he went in to make a payment, the girl HIS was already paid. Realizing what had happened. They were applying my payments to his automobile. I was furious. I notified the agent who initially did not want to accept blame, but since the payments were automatic and my account number was on each payment they took, they were responsible. The error was compounded by the fact that the cancellation notice went to HIS address (how dumb was that!) So I had no way of knowing that I was cancelled. I was without a car for 2 weeks and lost my job. After much haggling and many sleepless nights of wondering what to do without a job or a car, the insurance company finally admitted blame, paid the impound fees of $1,250.00. The agent also said they would handle the 2 tickets totaling 1K. FAST FORWARD TO 2010 in my state, the county did a scofflaw sweep and I was summoned to court with over 5 thousand other delinquent drivers to address unpaid tickets. The order was come to court by April 30th or be arrested. Realizing this had to be a mistake, but fearful of the law, I stood in line for over 5 hours in blazing heat, then sat in court another 5 hours waiting for my day in court. I was immediately threatened with arrest because the 2 tickets were not paid. Up to that moment, I had no idea the insurance company had not paid the 2 tickets. This time, not only was my insurance and registration cancelled, my license was suspended due to the age of the infraction (5 years). In front of the judge, I called the agents' office only to be told by the secretary that they had no intention to pay the ticket. Paying to get the car out of impound was enough. When the judge heard this she was shocked and let me off with a promise to pay in 5 days. She made me promise not to drive. With no way to get home but drive, I took a chance, and was pulled over. The officer informed me that due to the vast number of outstanding cases, tags bearing our county name would be targeted for a while (talk about a police state!). I showed him my documents from the court and headed home. This is a nightmare. Would I have a case if I filed suit against my insurance company for failing in their fiduciary responsibility to a 16 year client in good standing?
