a little priest 🤝 gee officer krupke
seemingly kind of silly, goofy showtunes but with darker undertones when you really listen to the lyrics

screenshots under the cut because i am emotional about them
look at anthony’s dapper little wigmaker outfit. i’m obsessed with it.
his face after saving johanna has me all kinds of emotional
when johanna says kiss me, he pauses everything to provide
look at them holding each other!!!!
HEIGHT. DIFFERENCE.
look at the way she holds his hand to her. she doesn’t want him to leave and my heart is broken.
he has to bend down so much to kiss her i just!!
she blows a kiss to him as he walks away
he’s blocking johanna from having to see the bodies :’))
the way he is holding her and trying to protect her ajiflajflkajfakl
johanna covering her ears so she doesn’t have to hear anything and anthony holding her that tight i’m crying
bonus: sweeney kissing lucy’s hand before he dies:

for international women’s day, the official sweeney broadway account did an interview with annaleigh about angela, which was sweet but i kind of wish they brought lucy and her struggles to attention because everyone loves lovett, but lucy is the most screwed over in the show and the fandom hates her restlessly for being traumatized. just like, let her have some spotlight please.

the ending of this musical is just ... it really is perfect. sweeney has fought so hard to get his revenge on turpin for tearing apart his family. it’s such a satisfying moment. turpin, the predator, the rapist, the incredibly classist and sexist man is finally dead. as the audience, we’re happy. and then, we realize this is not the end. we know that the sailor sweeney pulls into that chair is his own daughter. we watch with addicting uneasiness as he nearly murders a member of his own family. his sweet johanna. then, we hear the scream. that can’t mean this is the end, is it? we watch as turpin finally stops moving. at least. he’s dead. at last sweeney’s revenge truly is complete. but that can’t possibly be it. there’s more. we know. when he looks closer at the beggar woman, our stomachs drop. it’s her. it’s his wife that he has been aching for ever since the beginning. lucy. he killed her. we watched, confused, as he dances with the woman who lied and betrayed him. perhaps, we cheer a little bit knowing that she’s also dead. but then we’re left in a bloody room filled with corpses. we watch as sweeney cradles his dead wife. we watch as his life ends. it’s one of the best revenge narratives out there because it is both successful and unsuccessful. yes, sweeney killed turpin in the end. but he also killed his wife. he was left so blinded by a thirst for revenge. this story leaves an ache in our hearts. this story leaves us in tears. because we know that’s exactly what happens.
