3D Printing Photopolymerization Materials Market - Global Industry Analysis, Size, Share, Growth, Trends and Forecast 2020 – 2024
Summary:
A new market study, titled “Discover Global 3D Printing Photopolymerization Materials Market Upcoming Trends, Growth Drivers and Challenges” has been featured on WiseGuyReports.
Introduction
Global 3D Printing Photopolymerization Materials Market
The technique of 3D printing has its origins in Japan, where a scientist named Dr Hideo Kodama successfully patented the first rapid prototyping device in the early 1980s. Since then, the technology has advanced by leaps and bounds and is being adopted in many industries today. Applications are varied and include aviation and aerospace, fashion, healthcare, jewellery, product development and research in manufacturing, food, automotive, robotics, construction, among others. Plastic is the most commonly adopted material in 3D printing, followed by metal. Extrusion, vat polymerization or photopolymerization, powder bed fusion, and material jetting are the main methods used for 3D printing with polymers.
3D printing photopolymerization materials are a special kind of thermoset plastics called resins comprised of monomers, oligomers (binders), photo-initiators and other additives that change their chemical composition and harden on exposure to light. Light exposure brings about a chemical reaction which converts the monomers and oligomers to polymers. The technique differs from the source of light used, which could be lamps, lasers, projectors, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and so on. Ultraviolet light is the most commonly used wavelength. Stereolithography is a photopolymerization technique, which uses a laser to selectively draw the shapes on to a liquid resin layer by layer; while Digital Light Processing (DLP) is another photopolymerization technique, which uses a projector to flash images on to a vat of liquid resin so that it hardens layer by layer.
3D printing photopolymerization materials could be standard resins for prototyping, or engineering resins with specific mechanical and chemical properties like toughness, durability, flexibility, heat resistance or rigidity. They could also be special resins which are bio-compatible for medical and dental use. Polyvinyl cinnamate, polyvinyl alcohol, polyamides, polyisoprene, polyimides, epoxy, acrylics, styrene block copolymers, nitrile rubber etc. are common photopolymers. The materials used can also be classified as ABS-like (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene), durable PP-like (Polypropylene), rigid PC-like (Polycarbonate), and semi-flexible PE-like (Polyethylene).
