I was walking around the beach and was intrigued by the pattern of waves washing around a crab carapace.
Taken at Mavilette Beach Provincial Park while on vacation in Nova Scotia. After shooting several frames that were alright, I switched to a slower shutter speed to capture the movement of the water.

Greek Bronze Sword 1200-700 BC
This beautiful cast bronze sword has a tapering, bevelled blade with a raised midrib and beautiful integral handle comprised of long cylindrical grip, with two flat disks, separated by a short section of cylindrical grip. Bronze weaponry production flourished in western Asia, the Aegean, and Mainland Greece from the 2nd millennium BC to about 700 BC, when it was gradually replaced by iron. Swords, spears, and arrows were important symbols of war in Greek Bronze Age societies and served as powerful reminders that authority rested in the hands of those who could earn it.

End of Year Artist Statement
Kirsty Inglis
BFA Year 3
 Ebb and Flow
Using an assortment of found and commonplace materials such as bubble wrap, cardboard, plastic mesh and wooden battening, the works within this exhibition utilize processes of casting, assembling and both deconstructing and reconstructing elements. Here I use plaster to bond everything together. Applying its transformational shift from liquid to solid, these works host explorations of texture and form. While plaster has a long history in art through its use in fresco, this work sits closer to the everyday of plasterboards used in interior wall construction.
Each individual work is a closed-in space, enclosing an active space, where the structural supports used to hold the plaster surfaces are brought to the forefront. While this would typically go unnoticed, here I celebrate the framing, hanging and plinths within the exhibition. All of these displays highlight and bring attention to the methods of their creation. The work takes on the three dimensions of sculpture while simultaneously behaving like painting. Each contain a range of painterly concerns relating to their composition and textures. They are not quite a painting and not quite a sculpture, but hover somewhere in-between.

Rolling Papers: Types, Sizes, and Materials
Tumblr media
Rolling Papers: Facts and Options
Rolling papers are a key part of cannabis culture. They may seem simple, but there’s more to them than you think. Here’s a breakdown of what you need to know.
Rolling Paper Materials
Wood Pulp: The classic. These papers are thicker and easy to roll, even for beginners. But they burn fast and can affect the taste.
Hemp: These have a slower burn and an earthier flavor. Hemp papers are usually unbleached and are popular with users who prefer natural products.
Rice: The thinnest option. They burn slower but are more fragile, which makes them harder to roll. They also produce less ash.
Flax: Less common but eco-friendly. They’re smooth and burn evenly.
Rolling Paper Sizes
There’s no one-size-fits-all here. It depends on how much you want to smoke. Here’s a quick rundown of the most common sizes:
Single Wide (SW): Smallest option, typically measuring around 68-70mm long and 34-36mm wide. Ideal for personal joints with a minimal amount of cannabis.
1¼ Size: A popular choice, measuring about 76-78mm long and 45-48mm wide. Great for mid-sized joints with more cannabis content.
1½ Size: Slightly wider than 1¼ papers, allowing for a larger joint and more herb. Typically around 76-78mm long and 60-62mm wide.
Double Wide (DW): For those who prefer bigger rolls, these are around 76-78mm long and 88-90mm wide. Ideal for a heavy smoke session with multiple people.
King Size: The largest and most popular size for social smoking. Ranges from 100-110mm long and 55-60mm wide, perfect for larger, slower-burning joints.
King Size Slim: Offers the length of king size but with a slimmer width. Ideal for those wanting a long joint without overusing material.
Tumblr media
Most smokers use 1 1/4 size for a standard joint. But if you're feeling ambitious, King Size papers hold more.

Bleached vs. Unbleached Rolling Papers
Bleached: Often white. They’ve been treated with chemicals like chlorine. They burn fast but don’t taste as clean.
Unbleached: Brown or off-white. They’re all-natural, usually slower burning, and have a more neutral taste.
Tips for Choosing the Best Rolling Paper
Material: Want flavor? Choose wood pulp or hemp. Want a clean burn? Rice or flax.
Size: Single Wide if you’re smoking solo. King Size if you’re sharing.
Burn Speed: For a longer session, pick rice or hemp.
Taste: Choose unbleached for a cleaner smoke.

Common Rolling Paper Brands
RAW: Unbleached, hemp-based papers. Known for a clean burn.
Elements: Rice papers. Minimal ash and slow burning.
OCB: Offers a range of materials like wood pulp, hemp, and flax.
‍Conclusion
Rolling papers come in a wide range of materials, sizes, and types. Whether you're looking for a slow-burning hemp paper or a clean rice option, there’s something for everyone. Consider the burn speed, flavor, and ease of use when choosing the right paper. Knowing the differences will help you make a more informed choice and improve your smoking experience.
Rolling Papers FAQ
Can rolling papers expire? Not really, but they can dry out over time. Store them in a cool, dry place.
Are flavored rolling papers good?Flavored papers are fun, but they can add an artificial taste to your joint. They’re not for purists.‍
What's the difference between rolling papers and blunt wraps?Blunt wraps are made from tobacco leaves and are thicker. Rolling papers are thinner and don’t contain tobacco.

Lately I’ve been looking at storms. Focal length 16-78mm in wide angle apparently. 10-105mm broadly. occasionally 50mm, but more of a toss-up in the final result. DSLR Nikon looks vivid for color.
There’s a photo of downtown Miami at night with 100 iso and 12mm focal length, lens 10-20mm. Canon has the colors of a glossy commercial neutrality, although it’s clear post can edit most anything to look like something else- the character of a company sometimes shines through.
Wide angle screen savors of bright blue waters and jagged arcs of black rock - aperture 8, focal length 12.
Stars at night in long exposure, professional post- aperture 3.2 shutter speed 15 focal length 14 lens 14-24.
A duck with golden bokeh at sunset imputed from the sparks of light only reflected in the waves- aperture 5.6, iso 1000, focal length 560mm- achieved with a 400mm lens plus a 1.4x teleconverter, which sounds like an interesting prospect to consider.
A perfect photo of the ceiling in a cathedral- aperture 2.4 and focal length 4.3mm. (Iso 800.)
A calendar worthy black and white shot of a old boat at 85mm, F4.
Lightning at 6.3 aperture and 22mm.
A spring in yellowstone at 20mm, aperture 11.
A fox like you’d see scrolling tumblr at aperture 6 and 450mm. I like the people who use photography like a journal, they say, “noticed loud shutter. investigated the bush that made odd noises. no luck later on, they went off.” 450 seems like a sweet spot of wildlife photography, unless you preferred beautiful duck bokeh.
Grand canyon in all it’s majesty in aperture 9 and focal length 35. (one 30mm, ap 10). 320 iso. Canon really does remind me of calendars, professional neutrality. I reckon most photographers in national parks keep their 3 stop neutral density filters on (ideal texture caught between .5 and 2 seconds of exposure) and a polarizer to top it off, so I may be noticing a common polarizing character. I hear 10 stop is great for pulling out clouds scudding across the sky.
Semipalmated plover, crisply mid scamper- aperture 8 and focal length 560, 100-400mm lens with a 1.4x multiplier, iso 320.

First Photographs of Aotearoa
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In many of the early photographs of Aotearoa, documentation was prevalent. The people, the wildlife, the landscapes, the plants, all feature in the photography produced from that time. An example of plant documentation is seen in Herbert B. Dobbie’s work, where different specimens of New Zealand’s ferns are documented through the process of cyanotype. There are also many photographs that document the scale of the wonders that Aotearoa has to offer. Te Hauturu –o-Toi (Little Barrier Island kauri) depicts two figures standing at the base of a kauri tree that looms above them - one figure is holding an axe up to the base of the trunk. This image could be interpreted in a couple of ways. One perspective would be that this is simply a documentation of New Zealand’s wildlife. Another could be looking through “Western eyes” at these materials as a potential to make money.
Portraits were another aspect of this documentation. However, many of the portrait images we see today have had aspects modified. For example, in John Kinder’s image of Wiremu Tamihana te Waharoa, Chief of Ngati Haua, the background was painted over. Behind the figure originally stood the side of the Elms Library, which was replaced with a white background in the developing process to give the impression that the sky was behind the figure.  Another example is Daniel Mundy’s image of Sir George Grey, where thefigure is sitting in front of a white backdrop. Used as a reference image, the figure of Grey was then painted onto paper with a backdrop of lush bush and tall grey mountains. To me, these moments remove the image’s authenticity – how are we able to trust these images to show us what was/wasn’t there? This also emphasizes the idea that these images were used to market Aotearoa to the Western world. Showing imagery of the landscapes that New Zealand has to offer would be more appealing to that audience than showing just the figure itself.
