Random British Royal tidbits
I'm reading "The Vanity Fair Diaries" by Tina Brown and came across this tidbit:
Tumblr media
Monday May 26, 1986
"We had lunch with the preposterous Princess Michael of Kent, who looked about fifteen hands high in an orange silk wrap dress. She has developed a mad, false laugh and a new Lady Bracknell voice for dealing with inferiors. "Row-eena," she gushed at the cowed debutante she totes around as her "lady in waiting." "where is the Dom Perignon? It was sitting outside but those fooooools have taken it away! Find it!" (Mad false laugh.) "Isn't the service quite diabolical? Do shut the kitchen door, Rowena. I hate to stare into a kitchen!"
From The Vanity Fair Diaries by Tina Brown, p. 199
Princess Michael of Kent, nee' Baroness Marie-Christine Anna Agnes Hedwig Ida von Reibnitz, would have been 41 at the time of this lunch. She was born in the German-occupied Sudetenland in what is now the Czech Republic. Her father, Baron Günther Hubertus von Reibnitz, was a descendant of the ancient Reibnitz family, Silesian landowners, who trace their ancestry back to 1288. He was a Nazi party member and a SS calvary officer during WWII.
Princess Michael's mother was Countess Maria Anna Carolina Franziska Walburga Bernadette Szapary von Muraszombath, Szechysziget und Szapar.  The House of Szapáry is an old and important Hungarian noble family. Members of this family held the title of Imperial Count granted to them on 28 December 1722 by Charles VI, Holy Roman Emperor.
Princess Michael's parents divorced n 1948 and she with her mother and eldest brother moved to Rose Bay, Australia. In the early 1960s, she lived with her father on his farm in Mozambique.  She then went from Vienna to London to study History of Fine and Decorative Art at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
Tumblr media
She first married an English banker in 1971, but divorced in 1977. Once month after her marriage was annulled by the Pope, she married Prince Michael of Kent, Queen Elizabeth II's first cousin. She has said that Lord Mountbatten played matchmaker.
The lady-in-waiting mentioned in the excerpt is The Hon. Rowena Hawke Leatham Sanders, daughter of the 9th Baron Hawke of Towton.
Tumblr media
The Baron of Towton peerage title was created on 20 May 1776 for the admiral Sir Edward Hawke (of Scarthingwell Hall in the parish of Towton), responsible for a blockade of all French merchant shipping and the grounding of six French ships, and scattering of the rest, at the Battle of Quiberon Bay.
Tumblr media
Rowena Hawke's sister, Annabel, pictured above.
Tumblr media
Rowena's father, Bladen Wilmer Hawke, 9th Baron of Towton, above. He served as a Lord-in-waiting (government whip in the House of Lords from 1953 to 1957 in the Conservative administrations of Churchill, Eden and MacMillan.
Tumblr media
Another of Rowena's sisters, Lavinia, married Nicholas MacLean-Bristol. She became a Justice of the Peace and lives in 15th century Old Breachacha Castle on the Isle of Coll in Scotland. This tower fortress was the stronghold of the MacLean clan. The Isle of Coll was granted to the MacLeans in 1431. There is also a new "castle" on this island, built in 1750, which is available to rent for just £1500 for a party of two for one week.
Tumblr media
Rowena lives at Hankerton Priory, Malmesbury, Wiltshire, and borrowed a page from her sister's notebook, as her home is also available as an Air BNB rental - hosted by Rowena! Perhaps she will tell you stories about her days with Princess Michael if you stay with her?

Ruins and Shelters
*Is there any genuine difference, in the long run? Maybe in Italy, which has had more long-run than most places.
via e-flux.
Demanio Marittimo.KM-278 is the marathon dedicated to architecture, arts, design and to the Adriatic dimension curated by Cristiana Colli and Pippo Ciorra. As every year, the XIV Edition takes place on a public beach in Marzocca di Senigallia on Friday, July 19, no stop from 6pm to 6am.
RUINS&SHELTERS is the theme of this year. On the one hand, it focuses on the accelerated production of ruins produced by wars, conflicts and catastrophes. On the other hand, it reminds us the need to find different forms of shelter/protection for increasingly fragile communities and individuals.
The setting for the event is the result of a students’ competition hosted by SAAD, School of Architecture University of Camerino. Winning team for the OLTRE project are Fatijon Ademaj, Michele Forti, Qendron Mema, Gloria Seri, Elisa Valori.
Demanio opens with a tribute to this year’s Master of Territory, Guido Guidi. His work will be discussed with Simona Antonacci,Carlo Birrozzi and Antonello Frongia. Paolo Volponi’s 100 Years anniversary will be celebrated by lectures held by Massimo Raffaeli, Aldo Bonomi and Giovanni Russo, curator of an exhibition organized at the Ducal Palace of Urbino.
An interdisciplinary focus will be dedicated to Kosovo with the curator and critic Alex Fisher, the Mayor of Pristina, Perparim Rama, the curators of Hangar e Autostrada Biennale Leutrim Fishekqiu and Vatra Abrashi, the artists Sislej Xhafa, Artan Hajrullahu, Blerta Hashani.
Another experience in the field of cultural heritagewill be discussed by Andrea Viliani, Director of the Museum of Civilizations in Rome and curator of the international program Pompeii Commitment, and Davide Quadrio, Director of MAO (Museum of Oriental Art) in Turin.
RUINS&SHELTERS is also a concept that brings us to the fragile centrality of the Living Being, ethical and self-reflective when it comes to humans, “natural” for non-human beings. Sociologist and writer Marco Dotti will discuss the subject with architectural historian Francesco Benelli and composer David Monacchi.
2024 commemorates 150 years since the birth of Guglielmo Marconi. It was from the Colle dei Cappuccini in Ancona that on August 7, 1904 he initiated the legendary “radio” connection with Poldhu in Cornwall, 1750 kilometers away. Marconi’s legacy between will be the focus of the reflections of technological philosopher Cosimo Accoto with Andrea Borgnino and the artist Giovanni Gaggia.
The New York-based firm Lot-Ek will lecture about their work and offer a preview of the film dedicated to them by the director Tom Piper. Artists, designers, filmmakers will be oon stage. Gustav Düsing will talk about his award-winning project for the University of Braunschweig, introduced by Anna Sala of MVDR Foundation. Pietro Martino Federico Pizzi will present the Ceresè winery project, best building of the year, together with Grazzini, Tonazzini, Colombo, designers of the “Quintessenza” installation for the MAXXI. They will be introduced by Lorenza Baroncelli, director of MAXXI Architettura.
Many installations, artworks, and public design experiments will be exhibited. A Villa Medici fellow artist, Alix Boillot, will present her work Grace. HPO, the Ferrara collective of young architects, will present the TTT installation. The London based collective Lemonot will present Talamo, a project created by the Marche company Noctis and produced by BASE for the last Milan Design Week, introduced by  Linda Di Pietro, director of BASE, and Lorenzo Petri.
The frontiers of design will be explored by We are the Others (2024, 55 min), a film by Maria Cristina Didero and Francesca Molteni dedicated to the 40 years of activity of the Brazilian brothers Fernando and Humberto Campana. After the viewing, the authors will meet with Marva Griffin. Three shorter films, produced by the LINA fellows Ewa Effron, Laura Hurley, George Guedani in the frame of the MAXXI Architecture Film Lab will be introduced by the authors.
The event is promoted by MAPPE magazine, Gagliardini Editore, Associazione Demanio Marittimo.Km-278 with the collaboration of MAXXI, the Municipality of Senigallia, the Marche Region and with the support of a wide network of businesses, institutions and associations.

are you in love ➔ She looks panicked and ready to flee. “I...maybe? Why do you need to know?” She gulps and then whispers to herself. “Bloody hell, probably.”
do you believe in love at first sight ➔ “No. How would that work? It would be purely physical, wouldn’t it? You can’t tell what a person is like just from how they look.” She looks like she has a realization, then bats it away mentally. “I think love takes time.”
who ended your last relationship ➔ “I...honestly I haven’t had a relationship before this-” She cuts herself off. “I’m not saying I’m in one now!” have you ever broken someone’s heart ➔ "No! Of course not!” are you afraid of commitments ➔ Anna Maria looks down at her hands, tugging at the edge of her suit jacket. “Yes. I’m afraid it won’t be returned. The commitment. If they see me, they won’t want me.”
have you hugged someone within the last week? ➔ She smiles awkwardly, “Yes, surprisingly. I’m not much of a hugger, usually. I’m still getting used to the physical contact.”  have you ever had a secret admirer ➔ “No, I don’t...” She pauses, the wheels turning and then she blushes, “Yes...yes I have. Uh, they aren’t a secret anymore.”  have you ever broken your own heart? ➔ "I’ve lost count of the times.”
SIX CHOICES
love or lust ➔ "Love. Love is better.”  lemonade or iced tea ➔ “Iced Tea. Preferably in the Southern style with lots of sugar and a slice of lemon.”  cats or dogs ➔ “I like them both, but dogs are my favorite.” Anna Maria says and smiles brightly for a moment, in spite of herself. “Especially one dog. He is a very good boy.”
a few best friends or many regular friends ➔ “I prefer a few close friends. It’s hard to keep up with a lot of people. And I don’t like crowds.” wild night out or romantic night in ➔ She chuckles nervously. “I guess...a romantic night in? I’m not much of a partier.” She clears her throat.  day or night ➔ “Day. I like the sunshine.”
FIVE HAVE YOU EVERS
been caught sneaking out ➔ She smiles truly, a bit of confidence rising to the surface. “No, I am very good at moving silently and going unseen.”
fallen down/up the stairs ➔ She tilts her head, considering the question. “No, I don’t think I have.”  wanted something/someone so badly it hurt? ➔ “Yes...there are many things I want...only a few I might actually have.” She picks at her sleeve, running her fingers over scars the interviewer can’t see.  wanted to disappear ➔ "Constantly.” She says immediately, then adds. “Less so recently.”
FOUR PREFERENCES
smile or eyes ➔ “Smiles.” She gives a small one of her own, before her eyes make contact with the interviewer’s and she balks. “No one’s in particular!”  shorter or taller ➔ "Hm, I don’t think I have a preference, but taller?”  intelligence or attraction ➔ “Intelligence. I like strategy and clever puzzles.”  hook-up or relationship ➔ That panicked look again. “Relationships?”
FAMILY
do you and your family get along ➔ “No...I would say we do not get along. I avoid them as much as possible and hope I never see them again.” She crosses her arms over her chest.  would you say you have a “messed up life” ➔ “You have no idea how much it is.”  have you ever ran away from home ➔ “I’ve never ran away from anywhere I considered home. Los Diablos is the closest thing to it and I can’t seem to leave it.”  have you ever gotten kicked out ➔ "I was never kicked out.” After a pause. “I was never let in, in one sense. Steel, um, never let me join the Rangers.”
FRIENDS
do you secretly hate one of your friends ➔ “No. We may argue, but I don’t actually hate them. I think I’m too tired for that. It takes so much energy to hate.”  do you consider all of your friends good friends ➔ "I hope so.” She says. “I hope they consider me a good friend.”  who is your best friend ➔ She freezes, thinking about it. “Ortega...he knows me too well. He’s also my oldest friend.”  who knows everything about you ➔ “No one knows everything. I’m...a private person. Dan- I mean Herald and Ortega know more about me than I thought.” She mutters afterwords, “Probably more than they should.”

Hatria (Hadria) Picena ...Atri!
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
L'interno della Basilica:
Tumblr media
Modifiche principali effettuate nel tempo:
- prima c'erano 5 navate ora ne sono 3;
- i pilastri vennero inglobati in ottagoni.
Caratteristiche:
- arco a sesto acuto che arrivò in Europa con le Crociate che riprendono dalle costruzioni islamiche;
- circolo di affreschi realizzati dal pittore Abruzzese Andrea De Litio che lavorò anche a Firenze con Della Francesca;
- fonte battesimale;
- Cappella degli Acquaviva;

How slight you wander through the air...In the peace of my sad rest) Maria Stuarda (The Queen Mary Stuart Of Scotland) Opera By Domenico Gaetano Maria Donizetti -Act I Settings Scene 1: Court of Queen Elizabeth I at Westminster
Argument: At the Palace of Westminster, courtiers attend the arrival of Queen Elizabeth as the marriage must bring together the crowns of England and France. In reality, the queen, although aware of the advantages of this union for her country, is attracted by another man different from the king of France and she confesses her doubt in a graceful cavatina Ah, quando all'ara scorgemi.
Taking advantage of the prevailing atmosphere, Talbot asks the queen to forgive Queen Marie Stuart, but her chancellor, Lord Cecil, advises executing her. Queen Elizabeth I asks heaven to guide her in her actions and threatens to take revenge on María Estuardo if it is confirmed that, as she supposes, Leicester is in love with he, since he is the man with whom Queen Elizabeth I is in love.- -O nube! che lieve per l'aria ti aggiri ....Nella pace del mesto riposo(Oh cloud! How slight you wander through the air...In the peace of my sad rest)-
Queen Mary Stuart Look: on the meadow it is born, fragrant and beautiful, the flower family, And to me, yes, he smiles at me. And the zephyr that returns from the beautiful beaches of France, tells me that I enjoy as in my first and happy youth. Oh cloud! How slight you wander through the air, carry my love, carry my sighs to the holy ground that one day raised me. Ah! Come down courteous, take me into your bosom, Take me to France, away from sorrows. But the cloud is also cruel, because it escapes towards the blessed land of my elders.
(In the distance you can hear the sound of french horns)
What's that noise!
Hunters (inside) To the forest, on the hunt. The deer appears on the hill, then runs away By the river, you look in the waters; Run fast to hurt to that deer!
Queen Mary Stuart What voices are those!
Anne Kennedy It's the sign of the royal hunt!
Queen Mary Stuart The sounds are close coming ...the horses ...
Casadores The Queen!
Mary Stuart Ah, what a fatal name!
Anne Kennedy The tyrant comes through the park.
Queen Mary Stuart In the peace of my sad rest He wants to hit me with a new horror. I was the one who called her but I don't want to see her. I don't have that much value! Let him stay on his golden throne, let his gaze drift away from me. I have been despised too much; no one has pity on me.
¡no tengo tanto valor!
María S'avvicinano i suoni ... I destrieri ...
Cacciatori La Regina!
Maria Stuarda Ah! Qual nome fatale!
Oh nuvem!
Casadores A rainha!

ESPWNT 2020 Preview (2/5): Youth Teams
The Spanish WNT begins a new decade and a new era in 2020. They'll try to follow up their achievements from the late-2010s and build a generation of success and growth for women's football in Spain. The senior team may not have much going on this year, but the youth teams should have a packed schedule. With a Euro Championship and World Cup for both the U-17 and U-19 levels, the youth teams will have plenty of chances to prove last year’s ~underperformance was just a fluke.
U-17 UEFA Women’s Championship
The U-17 team entered the 2019 UEFA Championship having reached the finals in the previous five tournaments, so you can understand why getting knocked out in the semifinal was a disappointment. With their #1 UEFA coefficient earning them a bye through the qualifying round, Spain’s journey back to the top will begin this spring in the Elite Round:
March 19 vs. Turkey
March 22 vs. Slovenia
March 25 vs. Portugal
If they can come out on top of Group 6, they’ll head to Sweden for the final tournament in May.
U-17 Women’s World Cup
A top three finish in the U-17 UEFA Championship will punch Spain’s ticket to the U-17 World Cup, taking place this November in India. Spain would enter the tournament as the defending champions, having won their first title in 2018 when they defeated Mexico 2-1 in the final.
U-19 UEFA Women’s Championship
A gut-wrenching loss against France in the 2019 UEFA Championship semi-final broke a streak of five straight finals appearances for the U-19 team (just like their U-17 counterparts 😞). Qualification for the 2020 UEFA Championship began last fall, and Spain dominated their way through to the next round, scoring 22 goals while allowing none. Here’s what Group 3 has in store for them in the Elite Round:
April 8 vs. Sweden
April 11 vs. Serbia
April 14 vs. Switzerland
Winning the group would see Spain head to Georgia for the final tournament in late July.
U-20 Women’s World Cup
Disappointing as it may have been, Spain’s performance in the 2019 Euro earned them a spot in the U-20 World Cup, which will be this August in Costa Rica and Panama. Spain’s superb record in the U-19 UEFA Championship hasn’t quite carried over to the World Cup in the past, but in 2018 they earned their best result yet, finishing as runners-up to Japan. Capturing their first U-20 title would be a great sendoff for the players whose last chance it is to play in a youth World Cup:
Teresa Abelleira (January 9, 2000)
Anna Torroda  (January 21, 2000)
Laia Codina (January 22, 2000)
Candela Andujar  (March 26, 2000)
Berta Pujadas (April 9, 2000)
Maria Mendez  (April 10, 2000)
Olga Carmona (June 12, 2000)
Laia Aleixandri (August 25, 2000)
Athenea del Castillo (October 24, 2000)
Rosa Marquez (December 22, 2000)
Eva Navarro (January 27, 2001)
Cata Coll (April 23, 2001)
Claudia Pina (August 12, 2001)
