Continued on from yesterday's post...
The following news blurb seems to refer to the top photo’s event:
“Disc jockey Charlie Tuna will lead the radio station team in a softball game against the celebrity team. Each side will be composed of personalities from radio, television, music and motion picture industries. Three of the celebrities will be Kay Lenz, star of an upcoming movie, ‘Cat House Thursday,’ Judy Norton, actress from ‘The Waltons,’ and Peter Tork, formerly of the Monkees.” - News-Pilot, September 16, 1976
“It turned into an informal softball league that raised a little money. We got good press and everybody loved it. We had a great Hollywood Vampires softball shirt and cap with a big V on it…It was Alice and myself with Peter Tork as our pitcher. He was very good.” - Micky Dolenz, Goldmine, 2020
“[We would go to] schools and camps for underprivileged kids and we’d play softball. That’s how it started. And Alice [Cooper] came up with the name [Hollywood Vampires], of course.’ They even had their own team jerseys with big red V’s. ‘Alice tended to be the pitcher,’ [Micky] Dolenz says. ‘Peter Tork, who was probably the best baseball player on the team, he would play left field. I was not that great. I would play first base, usually.’” - Arizona Republic, September 26, 2021
Another throwback to the ‘60s: “Out in the parking lot [at RCA during a Jefferson Airplane session] Peter Tork was playing baseball with the sound technicians.” - Chris Franz (class of ‘69), Wellesley News, November 9, 1967

Pittsburgh Dance Instructor becomes Oscar wining star of
"An American in Paris"
and "Singin' In the Rain"
Gene Kelly was the leading star in the classic Hollywood movie musicals from the mid 1940s through the late 1950s.  Multi-talented he was a singer, dancer, choreographer actor, film director and producer.  Audiences love his delightful singing, his athletic dancing, his charming good looks, and his likeable characters.  He is credited for reviving movie musicals and redefining dance in films.  Kelly was honored with lifetime achievement awards from the Academy Awards, the Kennedy Center Honors, the Screen Actions Guild, and the American Film Institute. The American Film institute ranks him 15th on their list of “Greatest Male Stars of All Time”.  His most memorable performances include starring roles in Singin’ in the Rain, An American in Paris, On the Town, and Anchors Aweigh.  Gene was the star and choreographer of the film ‘An American in Paris” which won 8 Oscar awards including best picture and a special Oscar for Gene recognizing his contributions to screen choreography.  Singin’ in the Rain, called "a movie masterpiece" by Vincent Canby of the New York Times, has been voted the most popular movie musical of all time.
Growing Up in Highland Park
Born Eugene Curran Kelly in Pittsburgh on August 23,  1912, Gene Kelly grew up in on Mellon Street in Highland Park. He attended St. Raphael’s elementary school and was an altar boy at the church.  His Canadian born father James Patrick Joseph Kelly was as sports lover and a sales executive for the Thomas Edison's Columbia Phonograph Company.  Every winter James, who loved hockey, flooded the backyard to make an ice hockey rink for the family. Gene learned to skate at age 5.
Gene's mother Harriet, who as a hobby performed in local stock productions, made all five of her children take music and dance lessons.  She enrolled the eight year old Gene in dance classes at Blinsky’s School of the Dance on 6th and Penn in downtown Pittsburgh. The Kelly kids Jay, Jim, Gene, Louise, and Fred began performing dance routines around 1921 as "The Five Kellys" at amateur vaudeville nights and charity events.
After getting in fist fights with neighborhood kids who called him a sissy, Gene quit dancing.  He preferred sports. He played on a men's amateur hockey team age at 14 and dreamed of playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The Kelly's moved from Highland Park to 7514 Kensington Street in the Point Breeze neighborhood near Frick Park in 1924. Gene attended his first year of high school at the Sacred Heart School.
At age 15 Gene thought dancing would be a good way to meet girls, so he began dancing again. He took dance lessons while also playing on his high school football, baseball and hockey teams.  He also participated in gymnastics.
Graduating from Peabody High School in 1929 he enrolled at Penn State to study journalism.  With the 1930 stock market crash hurting the Kelly family’s finances, Gene left Penn State planning to cut costs by living at home while studying at the University of Pittsburgh.  He dug ditches, pumped gas, worked as a soda fountain jerk and carpenter's helper, and danced to earn tuition money. Gene and his younger brother Fred devised dance routines and found work dancing in local nightclubs as the “Kelly Brothers”.
Gene Kelly Studio of Dance
Gene’s mother took a job as a receptionist at Boulton's dance school in Pittsburgh’s Squirrel Hill neighborhood. When the owner Lou Boulton skipped town leaving behind a pile of unpaid bills, Harriet took over the dance school.  She paid the bills and renamed it the "Kelly School of Dance".  Gene at age 19 and his brother Fred became dance instructors.  Gene worked as a dance instructor while he attended studies at Pitt.  He taught tap, toe and ballet.  To learn routines Gene went to night clubs, movie musicals and vaudeville shows. He'd teach them the next day in his classes. With Gene’s growing reputation as a teacher the studio was renamed The "Gene Kelly Studio" of the Dance in 1932.  The Kelly’s opened a second dance school on the main street of Johnstown, Pennsylvania in 1933.  Gene taught at the Johnstown school on weekends.  He continued to teach dance for six years.
The dance school was a great success, but Gene was not content being a teacher.  He want to be a choreography and director.  Gene wanted to combine the styles of ballet and tap-dance into a new American dance for.  To learn ballet he took classes from ballet masters in Chicago and New York during the summers.  Gene attened classes at Chicago Association of Dancing Masters.  Seeing his talent the school asked him to a few classes.  Gene also read every book that he could find on ballet in English and French.  He practiced constantly.  Putting his skills into practice Gene danced in an choreographed musicals while attending at the University of Pittsburgh.
Pitt's Cap and Gown Musical Reviews
Gene enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh in 1931 studying economics.  At Pitt he joined the Cap and Gown Club, which staged four times a year at the Stephen Foster Memorial Theater along with an an annual event at the Nixon Theater.  Gene performed in the original musical comedy productions written by members of the Cap and Gown Club.  Completing a Bachelor of Arts in Economics in 1933, Gene then enrolled in the University of Pittsburgh’s Law School.   After two months of study groups and torts Gene decided that he wanted to be an entertainer and dance teacher.  He dropped out of school to pursue his entertainment career full-time teaching at the dance studio and doing performances.  Gene remained a member of Pitt’s Cap and Gown Club serving as its serving as its dance director from 1934 to 1938.  He was the assistant director of their 1936 Nixon Theater show "Out for the Count".  Gene first created his rolling skating dance routine in the Cap and Gown's production of "Tt's Always Fair Weather".  Gene directed the club's 1937 production of "Trailer Ho" at the Nixon and then took the show on the road for performances in Johnstown, Bradford and Erie. In 1938 Gene Kelly choreographed and directed the Cap and Gown show "Pickets Please" at the Nixon.
In addition to his work with the Cap and Gown Club did choreography for vaudeville and other organizations. Vaudeville acts that passed through Pittsburgh during the 1930’s hired Gene to create dance routines. In 1931 the Rodef Shalom Synagogue hired Kelly to teach dance and stage the annual Kermess show. He kept that position for seven years. Gene continued to perform with his brother. The Kelly Brothers performed in a theater for children at the Chicago World's Fair in 1934.
Broadway Stardom
In 1937 at the age of 27 Gene moved to New York City to become a choreographer. Unable to find work on Broadway, he returned to Pittsburgh to be the choreographer of the musical revue “Hold Your Hats” at the Pittsburgh Playhouse in the spring 1938. He also danced in the production.  At the Playhouse, Gene was seen by Broadway choreographed Robert Alton.  Alton brought Gene to Broadway making him a star.
On August 5, 1938 just before his 26th birthday, Gene packed one small suitcase and returned to New York for his first role.  Alton hired Gene for a Cole Porter musical giving him his first dancing role on Broadway in November of 1938 as a chorus boy in "Leave It to Me".  Alton gave Gene a feature singing and dancing role in his next production “One for the Money”.  In 1939 Gene choreographed and danced in in the Pulitzer Prize-winning "The Time of Your Life".  Also in 1939 he choreographed Billy Rose's Diamond Horseshoe. He danced his way into the heart of cast member Betsy Blair, whom he married in 1941.  Gene became a major star in 1940 with his leading role in Rodgers and Hart's Pal Joey choreographed by Robert Alton.
Movie Musical Superstar
With his rise to stardom, Hollywood called.  His role in Pal Joey captured the interest of Louis B. Mayer and Judy Garland. Gene signed with MGM's David O’Selznick in 1941.  He was cast as Garland's romantic lead in his first movie For Me and My Gal (1942),  His breakout move role was in Anchors Aweigh in 1945.
After a long career as one of the world’s most beloved musical performers Gene Kelly died in 1996.

The National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame announced that former UCLA quarterback Mark Harmon has been named the 2019 recipient of the NFF Gold Medal in recognition of his exceptional accomplishments, unblemished reputation and for reflecting the values of amateur football. He will be honored for his achievements during the 62nd NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 10 at the New York Hilton Midtown in New York City, which will also celebrate the 150th anniversary of college football. Harmon will become the 65th recipient of the NFF Gold Medal.
"As we prepare to celebrate the 150th anniversary of college football, Mark Harmon captures exactly what we hope to inspire in future generations of young football players, making him the perfect recipient for the NFF's highest honor," said NFF President & CEO Steve Hatchell. "An NFF National Scholar-Athlete at UCLA in the early 1970s, Mark took that same relentless drive to succeed, applying it to his career as an actor and unequivocally becoming one of the most successful stars of his generation. He has earned this honor many times over, and we are extremely proud to add his name to the esteemed list of past NFF Gold Medal recipients."
"Having achieved the highest levels of success, Mark Harmon has always remained humble and focused on the things that really matter in life, which is hard work, perseverance and teamwork," said NFF Awards Committee Chairman Jack Ford. "His success on the gridiron as a student-athlete and his subsequent icon status in film and television make him exceptionally well-qualified as our 2019 Gold Medal recipient. We look forward to welcoming him back to the NFF's stage in December, poetically 46 years after his being honored as an NFF National Scholar-Athlete during an event when another famous actor, John Wayne, accepted the NFF Gold Medal."
Harmon was born and raised in Southern California; the son of actress Elyse Knox and Heisman Trophy winner Tom Harmon, a 1954 College Football Hall of Fame inductee from Michigan. He attended The Harvard School (now known as Harvard-Westlake) in Los Angeles, playing football, baseball and rugby. On the gridiron, he mostly took the field as a running back and safety, only appearing in four games at quarterback. He broke his elbow as a junior, and did not play varsity football as a senior.
Not recruited out of high school, Harmon headed to Pierce Junior College in Woodland Hills, California, and he quarterbacked the team to a 7-2 record in 1971, earning All-America laurels. His performance earned him multiple scholarship offers, including Oklahoma in an effort led by Barry Switzer, the offensive coordinator at the time and a future College Football Hall of Fame coach, to recruit him. Harmon opted to stay in his hometown of Los Angeles, playing for UCLA head coach Pepper Rodgers and assistant coaches Homer Smith, Lynn Stiles and Terry Donahue, also a future College Football Hall of Fame coach.
Playing alongside future College Football Hall of Fame inductees Randy Cross and John Sciarra, Harmon helped orchestrate a UCLA turnaround, quarterbacking the Bruins, which had finished 2-7-1 at eighth-place in the Pac-8 in 1971, to a combined 17-5 record in 1972 and 1973. In his first game ever as a Bruin, which opened the 1972 season, Harmon led an underdog UCLA to a dramatic 20-17 win against two-time defending national champion Nebraska, snapping the Huskers' 32-game-unbeaten streak.
A Wishbone-T quarterback who could run, pass, fake and mix plays, Harmon rushed for more yards and touchdowns than he did passing, amassing 1,504 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns versus passing for 845 yards and 9 touchdowns during his tenure in Westwood. The offensive coordinator Homer Smith's wishbone offense forced Harmon to make multiple decisions in very short time periods, distributing the ball to running backs Kermit Johnson and James McAlister. The combination created the top running game in the nation in 1973, and UCLA set school records for total yards gained (4,403), average yards per game (400) and rushing touchdowns (56).
A Communications major who aspired to become a doctor, Harmon excelled in the UCLA classrooms, carrying a 3.45 GPA and graduating cum laude. His accomplishments earned him Second Team CoSIDA Academic All-America honors as well as an NFF National Scholar-Athlete Award, which led to his trip to New York City where he was honored at the NFF Annual Awards Dinner the same night that John Wayne accepted the NFF Gold Medal.
"In today's society, the scholar-athlete is indeed a rare breed," Harmon said in responding for the NFF Scholar-Athlete Class in 1973. "Not only does he excel on the field, but he competes in the classroom as well…. As we gather here tonight to pay our respects to the men who made the great American game of football what it is today, we hope that one day in the future some of us from the Class of '74 might be fortunate enough to carry on the great tradition that has been passed down by the distinguished men in this room. If we do, it is because our universities gave us the chance and the game of football has given us the principles."
After UCLA, Harmon declined professional football offers to instead pursue acting. He worked in advertising, as a shoe company rep and as a carpenter between acting gigs and appearing in Coors beer commercials. His hard work eventually paid off with a big break on NBC's St. Elsewhere and the leading role of Dr. Robert Caldwell. His success continued on NBC's police drama Reasonable Doubts starring as detective Dickey Cobb and CBS's Chicago Hope where he appeared as Dr. Jack McNeil.
He also had memorable arcs on the hit shows Moonlighting and The West Wing before landing the lead role of Leroy Jethro Gibbs, a special agent with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, on CBS' global favorite NCIS series, which has become part of television history, approaching its 400th episode and recently inking a deal for its 17th season. The most-watched-scripted show on American television today and consistently ranked among the five highest-rated TV shows each year, NCIS is a TV juggernaut, attracting more than 15 million viewers each week throughout most of its run.
In 2011, Harmon became an executive producer on NCIS, and in 2014 an idea he co-developed became the spinoff NCIS: New Orleans which premiered on CBS with Harmon as an executive producer alongside Gary Glasberg. His big-screen credits include Freaky Friday, Wyatt Earp, The Presidio, Summer School and Stealing Home. He has worked with Elizabeth Taylor, Michael Caine, Sean Connery, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jodie Foster, Allison Janney, Karl Malden, Patricia Arquette and Denzel Washington among countless other Hollywood notables.
Harmon has received numerous accolades and award nominations during his career, including being honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Oct. 1, 2012, but he has always remained humble with an appreciation for the efforts of others. Quietly giving back, Harmon's charitable work includes Saving Bristol Bay, Stand Up To Cancer, Ronald McDonald House Charities, Kids Wish Network, Clothes Off Our Back, Entertainment Industry Foundation, Oklahoma Kidz Charities Foundation, Oklahoma City Indian Clinic and The Children's Center OKC.
From his time as a quarterback at UCLA until now, as an executive producer and star of the CBS hit series NCIS, Harmon has always treated teammates and production crews with familial respect and loyalty.
"I look at the show as a team," Harmon said during a previous interview. "I've always been a team guy. I'm not in [acting] for the personal part of this, and I wasn't as an athlete either. It's about the work and we all work together."

Mark Harmon Named 2019 NFF Gold Medal Recipient
On Dec. 10, the NFF will present its highest honor to Harmon in recognition of his roots as a football scholar-athlete and subsequent accomplishments as a leader in the field of entertainment. IRVING, Texas (May 16, 2019) – The National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame announced today that former UCLA quarterback Mark Harmon has been named the 2019 recipient of the NFF Gold Medal in recognition of his exceptional accomplishments, unblemished reputation and for reflecting the values of amateur football. He will be honored for his achievements during the 62nd NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 10 at the New York Hilton Midtown in New York City, which will also celebrate the 150th anniversary of college Football.

The highest and most prestigious award presented by the National Football Foundation, the Gold Medal recognizes an outstanding American who has demonstrated integrity and honesty; achieved significant career success; and has reflected the basic values of those who have excelled in amateur sport, particularly football. First presented to President Dwight D. Eisenhower at the NFF Annual Awards Dinner in 1958, the Gold Medal boasts an impressive list of past recipients, including seven presidents, four generals, three admirals, one Supreme Court Justice, 29 corporate CEOs and chairmen, actor John Wayne and baseball immortal Jackie Robinson. “Password” is a game show created by Bob Stewart for Goodson-Todman Productions. The host was Allen Ludden, who had previously been well known as the host of the “G.E. College Bowl.” In the game, two teams, each composed of a celebrity player and a contestant, attempt to convey mystery words to each other using only single-word clues, in order to win cash prizes.
“Password” originally aired from 1961 to 1967 on CBS, along with weekly prime time airings. An additional 1,099 daytime shows aired from 1971 to 1975 on ABC. The show's regular announcers were Jack Clark and Lee Vines on CBS and John Harlan on ABC.
Tumblr media
Two revivals later aired on NBC: “Password Plus” (originally titled “Password '79”) from 1979 to 1982, and “Super Password” from 1984 to 1989, followed by a primetime version on CBS from 2008 to 2009 “Million Dollar Password.” All of these versions introduced new variations in game play.

The theme song used on “Password” from 1961 to 1963 was called "Holiday Jaunt," composed by Kurt Rehfeld. That theme was followed later by "You Know the Password," composed by Bob Cobert, which was used from 1963 until the CBS version's cancellation in 1967 (listen above). When the show returned on ABC in 1971, Score Productions composed "The Fun of It." The theme used later in that version's run, beginning in 1974, was called "Bicentennial Funk," which was used until the ABC version's finale in 1975.
“Password” was most often taped in New York at CBS-TV Studio 52 (later converted to the Studio 54 disco) and CBS-TV Studio 50 (the Ed Sullivan Theater) until the end of the daytime run in 1967. The original CBS version made annual trips to CBS Television City during the 1960s. Mark Goodson opposed a permanent move to Hollywood so the network canceled the series.
Tumblr media
The Milton Bradley Company introduced the first home version in 1962 and subsequently released 24 editions of the game until 1986. Owing to common superstition, these releases were numbered 1-12 and 14-25, skipping 13. It was tied with “Concentration” as the most prolific of Milton Bradley's home versions of popular game shows. Milton Bradley also published three editions of a “Password Plus” home game between 1979 and 1981, but never did a version for “Super Password.” Lucille Ball was fond of playing the home game.
In 2013, TV Guide ranked it #8 in its list of the 60 greatest game shows ever.

TRIVIA
In round four, the password “TINKLE” makes everyone giggle. Ludden is relieved when Jones successfully guesses it in the second try.
When the password is “PROPOSAL” and the clue is “MARRIAGE,” Lucy's mind immediately goes to “DIVORCE.”  Lucille Ball divorced Desi Arnaz in the spring of 1960.
At the end, Lucy says her son [Desi Jr.] beats both her and Gary when they play at home. Ludden makes the usual mistake of guessing that her son is named Ricky. Lucy corrects him, smiling. Ludden says that Vivian Vance has challenged Lucy to a game. Vance appeared on the game twice previously, once in 1961, and a second time in November 1963, where she likely issued the challenge. A year later (September 24, 1964 - see below), the challenge was accepted.
THE RESULTS
Lucy and James Waldo win the first round.
Gary and Robert Davidson win the second round, despite Gary saying he’s not being sure of what several of the words meant.
Lucy and William Sexton win the third round.
Lucy and Ralph Jones win the fourth round.

THE PLAYERS
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball is introduced as the start of television, motion pictures, and the Broadway stage. She had just finished her second season of “The Lucy Show.” Allen Ludden implies that there was a question if it would be renewed for a third season. Lucy reminds the audience that the show will start at 9:00pm in the fall, a half hour later.
Tumblr media
Gary Morton is introduced as the star of television and supper clubs. Ludden talks with Gary and Lucy about golf, Gary's favorite pasttime.
Tumblr media
Lucie Arnaz is from Los Angeles, California. She is 13 (in July) and in seventh grade. She doesn't know what she wants to do when she grows up.
Tumblr media
Desi Arnaz Jr. is from Los Angeles, California. He is 11 and in sixth grade and plays little league baseball.  He is a center fielder but would like to play second base.
In round one, Lucy's partner is Desi Jr. and Gary plays with Lucie.
In round two, Lucy's partner is Lucie, and Gary plays with Desi Jr.
In round three, Lucy's partner is Gary, and Desi Jr. and Lucie play together. The children are playing for their allowances; a quarter a point.
TRIVIA
This episode was taped in at CBS Television City in Hollywood.
In round one, the password is “LEOPARD” and Lucy's clue is “STRIPED.”  She instantly realizes her mistake, as does the studio audience.
When the password is “HARP,” Desi Jr.'s clue is “MARX”, thinking of Harpo Marx, who made a guest appearance playing his namesake instrument on an episode of “I Love Lucy.” The audience audibly gasps at how clever Desi's clue is. Gary gets it right.
In the lightning round, the password is “THUNDER” and Gary's clue is “LIGHTNING,” to which Desi Jr. says “ROUND.” Ludden stops the clock, momentarily confused if Desi is just repeating the name of the game. In that same round, the password is “COWBOY” and Gary's clue is “GUNSMOKE.” Desi responds “CHESTER,” which is the first name of one of “Gunsmoke's” leading characters played by Dennis Weaver.
In the final round, the password is “CARROT” and Desi's clue is “RED.” He was probably thinking of his mother's hair, not the vegetable.
Tumblr media
THE RESULTS
Lucy and Desi Jr. win the first round.
Gary and Desi Jr. win the second round.
Lucie and Desi Jr. win the third round.
All their winnings will go to a summer camp for underprivileged children.
In the final moments, Ludden says that Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Stewart will be on the show next week.  He gives a plea for helping the Peace Corps.

THE PLAYERS
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball is introduced as the comedy star of television, motion pictures, and the Broadway stage. Lucy says the new time slot for “The Lucy Show” is 9 o'clock and that Vivian Vance is still with her on the show. She also mentions future guest stars like Jack Benny, Bob Hope, Danny Kaye, and Ann Sothern. The show's third season premiered three days earlier on CBS with “Lucy and the Good Skate” (TLS S3;E1).
Lucy's first partner is James Horn from Hubbard City, Texas. A student, he spent the summer working at the Texas Pavilion at the New York World's Fair. Ludden says that the most popular day at the fair was 'Lucille Ball Day.' The event was held on Monday, August 31, 1964.
Tumblr media
Lucy's second partner, Vivian Vance, is introduced as “a housewife from Stamford, Connecticut.” This is indeed where Vance was living at the time, commuting to Los Angeles to do “The Lucy Show.” Vance's appearance is obviously a complete surprise to Lucy, and even to Morton, who is just as shocked to see her. She is playing for a charity called Medi Help.
In round three, Lucy is partnered with Peter Lawford and Gary with Vivian.
Gary Morton is introduced as the star of television and supper clubs. Gary promotes their 15-minute CBS radio show “Let's Talk To Lucy.”  As Lucy tells listeners, “Don't boil water or you'll miss it.” Morton is the show's producer and announcer. Dean Martin, Mrs. Dean Martin, Red Skeleton, Mrs. Red Skeleton, Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye are some of the upcoming guests.
Gary's first partner is Kelly Brummer from Denver, Colorado. She is a student with a merchandising major and a French minor, which confuses Lucy.
Tumblr media
Gary's second partner is Mr. Peter Lawford. At the time, Lawford was married to President Kennedy's sister, Patricia. Lawford had an uncredited role (voice over) in the 1945 film Ziegfeld Follies that starred Lucille Ball. He often appeared on Goodson-Todman's other panel shows “What's My Line?” and “To Tell the Truth.” His winnings will go to the Kennedy Library.
TRIVIA
Trying to get her partner to say “FRECKLE” Lucy is chastised by Ludden to “watch her gestures.” Gary uses the clue “DAY” to get his partner to guess it, to no avail. He is referring to the popular singer and actress Doris Day, who famously had freckles.
As usual, Lucy is startled by Ludden's “Yes!” when she gets it right.
When the password is “DRAPE” and the clue is “CURTAIN,” Lucy sings a bit of “Everything's Coming Up Roses” from the 1959 Broadway musical Gypsy: “Curtain up, light the lights...”
During Vivian's entrance applause she and Lucy exchange some barely audible chat:
Lucy: (to Vivian) “What a wonderful surprise. I was calling and wondering why you weren't home.” Vivian: “I wanted them to introduce me as Mrs. John R. Dodds.”  [Vivian's husband at the time.]
When the password is “PANTS,” Gary gives Lawford the clue “STRETCH” and he guesses correctly. Lucy says she would have thought girdle.
Ludden: (to Vivian) “Does Lucy have a lot of stretch pants?” Vivian: “Yeah.” Lucy: (chiding Vivian) “Don't tell him everything!”
As usual with Lucy, Ludden has to admonish her for gesturing too much.
Ludden: (to Lucy) “Watch those hands!” Vivian: “Oh, she cheats!” (laughs)
While Lawford is thinking about a clue, he tuts at Lucy and Vivian, thinking they are cheating.
Vivian: “Oh, no!  She said I look thinner. We didn't say a word about what was here.” (referring to the word card)
Ludden stops the clock momentarily when Gary inadvertently says the password during the lightning round.
Tumblr media
When the password is “FEMININE” and Lawford's clue is “MASCULINE,” Lucy guesses “VERILITY” and then makes a lewd gesture thrusting forward her stiffened arm and clenched fist. She immediately softens it. In a previous appearance she gave her husband the middle finger!
THE RESULTS
Lucy and James Horn win the first round.
Gary and Peter Lawford win the second round.
Gary and Vivian win the second round.
Ludden closes by promoting that Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Stewart will be his next celebrity guests.
Tumblr media
“Password” ~ November 12, 1964
Allen Ludden (Host)
The program is sponsored by Clairol and Bufferin.
THE PLAYERS
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball says “The Lucy Show” is on at a new time, 9:00pm. She promotes that later in the season, for three episodes, Ann Sothern will appear. Lucy says that they are trying to get Jean Arthur to guest star.  [This never happened.]
Tumblr media
Gary Morton promotes Lucy's radio show, “Let's Talk to Lucy.”
Tumblr media
Lucie Arnaz is 13 years old and in the 8th grade.
Tumblr media
Desi Arnaz Jr. is 11 and a half years old. He has a new record out for Reprise Record with Dino Martin and Billy Hinsche.
For round one, Lucy and Desi Jr. are partners against Gary and Lucie.
For round two, Gary and Desi Jr. are partners against Lucy and Lucie.
For rounds three and four, Lucy and Gary are partners against Desi Jr. and Lucie.
TRIVIA
When the password is “FLEA,” Desi Jr. mistakenly thinks it means “RUN.” He realizes his error in the second clue, which he gives as “DOG.” Lucy says “We're going to have spelling lessons when we get home.” Lucy and Desi Jr. win the round.
In the lightning round, Desi Jr. is startled by the word popping up from the desk. It quickly goes back in and pops back up again.
While Lucy and Desi are playing, Gary unwittingly says the last clue “HUNGRY” even though he is not playing. Ball momentarily shoots her husband the middle finger!  [see above photo]
In round two, Ludden starts with the wrong team and shouts “Cut! Cut!” after hearing a voice from the booth. It is unclear whether this was edited out for broadcast, but was left in for the syndicated master print seen on the Game Show Network (GSN).
Mother and daughter win round two. This time it is Lucille Ball who is startled by the pop-up lightning round passwords.
In round three, Lucie and Desi Jr. are playing for their allowance: 25 cents for each point they earn. Ludden says that they did this the last time they were on. Lucy says if they win too much, they can't have it all at once. The youngsters prevail.
Time runs out before the end of round four, but Lucy and Gary win $250 for their charity anyway. Lucy announces that all the prize money will go to a Child Guidance Center in Los Angeles.
The announcer promotes that Steve Allen and Jayne Meadows will be next week’s guests. Promoting Desi's upcoming record Ludden says the titles are “We Know” and “Since You Broke My Heart” although Ludden mistakenly says “Your Heart”. Desi quickly corrects him. Although Desi said earlier that the record due to be released soon, Desi failed to realize that the program was pre-taped and would air ten days after the single debuted.

Although reality television stars hold enough star power themselves, it doesn't hurt to see some famous faces in cameo appearances, especially when it's not announced prior. Whether it's helping a reality star film a music video or stepping in as a guest judge, celebrity guest stars are there to help save the day on their respective episodes.
RELATED: 10 Failed Reality Shows That Helped Launch A Star's Career
There are a handful of celebrities who have been cameos in some of the biggest reality shows out there, and there are even more who are huge fans of these shows themselves, making their appearance just as important on their part as well as for the viewers.
10 Alex Rodriguez, Keeping Up With The Kardashians
Tumblr media
In season 15 of KUWTK, ARod was able to use his baseball expertise and teach the family some tips and tricks of the game.
The famous baseball player was helping the Kardashian clan practice and learn how to play softball for an upcoming charity game. He is one of the most famous athletes to appear on the reality show over its 20 season run.
9 Patti LaBelle, RHONJ
Tumblr media
The award-winning singer had her dreams come true when she was able to be featured on one of her favorite shows, The Real Housewives of New Jersey. In season 4, LaBelle was spotted when Chris Manzo and his friend went to the Fancy Food Show to promote their water, BLK.
While starstruck, Manzo hugged the singer and even gave her BLK water to take with her. The starstruck feeling was mutual since LaBelle already knew who Manzo was and admitted she was a fan.
8 Lady Gaga, The Hills
Tumblr media
The Hills followed Lauren Conrad and her experience trying to make it in the fashion industry, and one of her major assignments for her internship at Teen Vogue was to help out pop star Lady Gaga.
RELATED: 10 Musicians Who Made The Transition Into Films
This included helping Gaga get into her costume and make sure her appearance was perfect before she went on stage to perform. The episode featured Gaga's breakout hit, "Just Dance", which marked the start of her impressive career as a pop singer.
7 Ariana Grande, Keeping Up With The Kardashians
Tumblr media
Season 16 of Keeping Up With The Kardashians found Ariana Grande prepping for her now-iconic music video for the song "thank u, next".
Momager Kris Jenner was asked to play the role of the excited mom, channeling her inner Mrs. George from Mean Girls, in the recreation of the famous Jingle Bell Rock scene in the movie. Jenner nailed her part in the video, and Grande highly enjoyed her debut on the show.
6 Zendaya, America's Next Top Model
Tumblr media
Zendaya was featured on the popular model show on two different seasons. Her first appearance was on cycle 20 when she and model Shaun Ross helped the models with a photoshoot about flaws and insecurities.
In cycle 23, the reboot with Rita Ora, she was seen in the premiere episode where the models had to go from a runway walk to a trust fall photoshoot right after walking off the stage. The prize of this challenge was to take a selfie with Zendaya.
5 Seth Rogen, Vanderpump Rules
Tumblr media
Back in 2015, Rogen and his co-stars from the film The Night Before stopped by the set of Vanderpump Rules and created their own intro segment for the show.
RELATED: Vanderpump Rules: Most Popular OG Cast Members, Ranked By Instagram Followers
There was even footage released on his social media accounts sharing different scenes that he and his co-stars were in, which included other cast members of Vanderpump Rules training the celebrities how to work for Lisa and Ken. It also helped that he is a major fan of the show before he had this opportunity.
4 Nicki Minaj, RuPaul's Drag Race
Tumblr media
Minaj was an excellent cameo and celebrity judge on season 12's premiere episode of RuPaul's Drag Race. The queens had to rap for her as a part of their performance, which included a freestyle rap from Minaj herself in the episode.
Other than her rapping, she took her time as a judge seriously, including providing feedback on the queens' raps, offering advice, pointing out what she loved and what can be worked on with each queen, and brought a great attitude with her comments.
3 Kris Jenner, RHOBH
Tumblr media
Having connections to many celebrities in Hollywood already, Jenner's friendship with Kyle Richards, Faye Resnick, and Lisa Rinna worked out for her.
She was able to have a cameo on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills on three different occasions, and there are even rumors that she is set to star in the show herself this year after Keeping Up With The Kardashians comes to an end.
2 Hilary Duff, The Hills
Tumblr media
Although Duff's time on the show seemed very quick, her impact on the other cast members in the episode was dramatic. One of Lauren and Whitney's jobs as the Teen Vogue interns was to make sure everyone got seated at a major fashion event.

Duff's late appearance caused some stress and chaos for the girls, but she finally showed up to save the day and the fashion show.
1 Miley Cyrus, RuPaul's Drag Race
Tumblr media
Cyrus made her mark on the critically acclaimed show as a celebrity judge in season 11 of RuPaul's Drag Race. As the first judge of the season, she went undercover as a crew member of the show in a beard, mustache, and wig to hide her true appearance.
The queens had no idea what was going on when Cyrus came out to meet them and were extremely surprised to see her reveal.

10 To Watch : Mayor’s Edition 2320
RICK HORROW’S TOP SPORTS/BIZ/TECH/PHILANTHROPY ISSUES FOR THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 3 : MAYOR’S EDITION
with Jacob Aere
Super Bowl LIV is in the record books, but celebrations in Miami continue. On Monday night, HSBC and Rick Horrow present SportBusiness 50: Lessons And Leadership From Legends Of The Game. The event, held at the University of Miami, features panelists including Dolphins Vice Chairman Tom Garfinkel, NFL Hall of Fame President and CEO David Baker, and RISE CEO Diahann Billings-Burford. The “Lessons And Leadership” Series will draw on contributors to Horrow’s latest book, The Sport Business Handbook: Insights from 100+ Leaders Who Shaped 50 Years of the Industry. The collaboration between HSBC and Horrow kicks off in Miami, focusing on the greatest moments in South Florida sports history and how technology has disrupted the industry. “We are always looking for new and interesting ways to connect with our clients and support their personal and professional growth,” said Michael Rogan, Head of Corporate & Strategic Partners, Retail Banking and Wealth Management, HSBC USA. “Collaborating with Rick on the launch of his new book provides us with an exclusive platform to share insights, perspectives and solutions from luminaries in the sports industry that will help support the long-term business success of our clients and prospects.” We will share the top “greatest moments” next week.
A new report predicts that sports sponsorship spending will increase the most it has in a decade. Global spending on sports sponsorships by advertisers is predicted to total $48.4 billion this year, up 5%, according to a new report from marketing intelligence firm WARC. The 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo is expected to garner $5.94 billion in sponsorship dollars, with $1.95 billion coming from Olympic partners including Coca-Cola and P&G, double the amount sponsors spent at the previous games. The report also predicts that local sponsors in Japan including Canon, Asahi, and Fujitsu will spend $3.33 billion, four times the amount spent during Rio's 2016 games. The report also forecasts that brand investment in esports will total $795 million this year, up 23.1%, with $584 million going to sponsorships and $211 million to ad breaks. Further, NBC projects that the Summer Olympics in Tokyo will set a record by surpassing the $1.2 billion in TV commercials it sold during 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro, per Front Office Sports. The network has already booked $1 billion in ad revenue commitments, and the Games are still five months away.
Tokyo 2020 organizers enter the final stretch of a decade of Olympics planning. According to Japan Today, the organizers are dealing with fewer issues than their counterparts did in the build-up to Rio four years ago. But a few challenges still remain before the opening ceremony on July 24, including the city's notoriously hot summer weather. "Everything is coming together now, and we are extremely excited," Tokyo 2020 spokesman Masa Takaya told Reuters. "It has been a long journey, with some bumps here and there, but for the most part everything has gone well. Everything is where we wanted it to be with six months to go – sometimes in an even better place." Noticeably different from Brazil is the weight of public support behind the Tokyo Games, with almost 4.5 million Olympics tickets having already been sold on the domestic market. By contrast, the Rio Olympics were met with widespread criticism over the use of public funds, as money was poured into venues that have since largely become white elephants. The centerpiece of Tokyo's Olympics is the 68,000-capacity National Stadium, opened by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in December.
A U.S. House of Representatives resolution targets minor league contractions in baseball. Less than two weeks before major league pitchers and catchers are due to report to spring training on February 12, a group of U.S. representatives led by Lori Trahan (D-Mass.) have introduced a resolution imploring MLB to "abandon its proposal to strip major-league affiliation from 42 minor-league teams across the country." The bipartisan legislation, according to the Boston Globe, is an "outgrowth of the 'Save Minor League Baseball' Task Force formed late last year." The measure is "non-binding, but after being assigned to a committee, the sponsors' goal will be to bring the measure to the floor of the chamber for a full House vote." Approval is "not guaranteed but the bipartisan support suggests passage would be more likely than not, an outcome that could stiffen headwinds MLB is already facing” in its talks with MiLB over a new working agreement. As baseball season inches closer and the 2020 elections heat up, look for more candidates nationwide to come out in support of MiLB and what it means to our communities.
The PGA Tour announced that the Tour and its tournaments have surpassed $3 billion in all-time charitable giving. The charitable total, which includes a record $204.3 million in 2019 to bring the all-time total to $3.05 billion, includes donations made by tournaments on the PGA Tour, PGA Tour Champions, Korn Ferry Tour, Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada, PGA Tour Latinoamérica and PGA Tour Series-China. “It’s truly a pleasure to thank our fans, sponsors, tournaments, players and volunteers for helping us generate over $3 billion for charity and positively impact millions of lives,” said PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan. “Together, we look forward to continuing to reach – and celebrate – millions more.” That’s an impressive number – as is the winner’s take just announced for the 2020 Players Championship. The PGA Tour, according to the Florida Times-Union, has “boosted the purse" for the event to $15 million in total and restored it to its "position as the tournament with the richest purse in golf.” The 2020 winner will take home $2.7 million, up from $2.25 million for the 2019 event won by Rory McIlroy.
Snapchat promotes its ability to reach millennials and Gen Z during March Madness. While everyone else’s mind is on Super Bowl LIV, Snapchat is focused on March Madness. According to Snap Inc. internal surveys, as reported by Hashtag Sports, nearly 75% of Snapchatters who intend to watch the 2019-2020 NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championship use the messaging application while watching live sports. Additionally, over 65% of that group will use Snapchat to chat with their friends about the games. Snapchat saw incremental reach up 23% on average among its advertisers’ target audiences, according to Nielsen, and 72% of the app’s Gen Z reach was not reached by TV. Snapchat concluded, “Marketers can look forward to March Madness on Snapchat in 2020 because of the hyper-relevant content on our platform, Snapchatters’ engagement during live sports events, our proven ability to add incremental reach to TV advertising and the strong performance advertisers saw during March Madness in 2019.” Reaching a desirable young demographic, clearly, is a snap.
SoFi Stadium builders said that the venue is 85% complete, but "finishing touches will take up much of the construction horde's remaining time" before the Inglewood venue opens in late July. Rams Executive VP and COO Kevin Demoff told the Associated Press, "Everybody here feels confident about the timeline and how it will come together. There's been no indication to us that there's been any slippage." The Rams and Chargers will take advantage of the stadium's "late-summer concerts and their own preseason games to work out any quirks or adjustments before the regular season begins." The 298-acre Hollywood Park development surrounding the stadium will "take longer to complete, although construction is already underway on the 450,000-square-foot building that will house NFL Media" beginning in 2021. Crews also are "currently building the stadium's translucent roof, with roughly 40% of the panels already in place." USC School of Architecture Associate Professor Alvin Huang said, "They're going against the historic convention of stadium design where it is a closed roof or a retractable roof." He added, "You will literally have millions of people looking at it from above. The roof not only becomes an architectural signature, it also becomes a branding signature."
YouTube and Google sign an exclusive streaming deal with esports Activision Blizzard. According to The Verge, video game publisher Activision Blizzard will see the Google cloud platform power all of its game hosting and technical needs. As part of the deal, YouTube will become the exclusive streaming partner for all of the game publisher’s big e-sports titles, including the upcoming season of the Overwatch League and the Call of Duty League. The deal is a huge win for YouTube, which has struggled to compete with game streaming leader Twitch, despite YouTube being the largest video site in the world and the second most-visited website on the planet behind only its parent company’s search engine. Twitch has long been the go-to destination for live gaming entertainment. In the larger esports streaming context, it’s Amazon-owned Twitch competing against Google-owned YouTube, while Facebook is also trying to build out its own live-streaming platform to capitalize on the popularity of gaming content. It is only a matter of time before other big streaming players, such as Disney, HBO, and Netflix try to get more involved in the live-streaming and gaming spaces, so Twitch and YouTube need to solidify their foothold on the new industry quickly
The NBA makes major All-Star Game format changes that include a tribute to Kobe Bryant. According to Larry Brown Sports, the 2020 NBA All-Star Game will be broken into a series of mini-games in which teams can raise money for Chicago-area charities. Scores will be reset to 0-0 at the end of the first three quarters, with the winners of each of the first three quarters receiving $100,000 to donate to their charity. When the fourth quarter begins, the scores for each team from the first three quarters combined will be redisplayed, and the team that wins the All-Star Game will be the first to reach a target score in the untimed fourth quarter. That target score will be determined by the total score the leading team through three quarters, plus 24. The 24 is a nod to Bryant’s jersey number. The final score is worth $200,000, making the total game worth $500,000 for local charities. If one team leads the entire way through, the losing team will still get $100,000 to donate to its charity. In an effort to honor Kobe Bryant and contribute to local charities, the NBA will make sure to place the Lakers star center stage during this year’s All-Star game.
Adidas will launch new fabrics from recycled polyester and ocean plastic. According to Reuters, the new fabrics will be expanded into Adidas product lines after the success of shoes made with the eco-friendly Parley for the Oceans initiative. Adidas first teamed up with Parley in 2015 and gradually ramped up production of shoes using plastic collected on beaches and coastal regions to make more than 11 million pairs in 2019, still just a fraction of a total of more than 400 million shoes. The Ellen MacArthur Foundation says less than 1% of material used for new clothing is recycled, a loss of more than $100 billion worth of materials each year. Adidas will continue to make Parley-branded shoes and clothes out of ocean plastic in 2020 and will also launch “Primeblue” fabric containing Parley marine waste that it will use in existing lines like its popular Ultraboost shoes, with the aim of having 100% of its polyester recycled by 2024. In total, the German sports giant will produce 15-20 million pairs of shoes using ocean plastic in 2020. While recycled polyester costs about 10% more than the other material, Adidas ultimately wants to get the price down so more consumers can afford to choose sustainable products and help save the planet.

If I survived two airplane crashes not even sporting any garments, I’d in all probability by no means put on garments once more. Sensible pondering Hogan.
As a result of Heather Clem tape and its aftermath, which featured Hogan saying some racially insensitive feedback to her, Hogan was faraway from every little thing associated to the WWE. Sadly, Terry suffered an damage in baseball and determined to not pursue it any additional. I feel he would have been a bit of too huge to play anyway.

While addressing why she didn’t get married until “later” in life, Cameron noted, “I think it’s a matter of I just hadn’t met my husband, you know? I had boyfriends, before. And there’s a really, really distinct difference between husbands and boyfriends. And I have a husband who is just my partner in life and in everything. Talk about two very different people! We are so different from one another, but we share the same values - we’re totally two peas in a pod. We are both just weird enough for each other…we women are objectified so much. Somehow my husband has just been able to kind of show me what it’s like not to have that be a part of a relationship, and being an equal.” Nonetheless, from the interview Cameron gave at the Goop Wellness Summit, it sounds like she is almost ready to return to Hollywood, at least to some extent. Now that the whole Unicorn Frappuccino craze has died down, Starbucks is looking for their next big thing. Nearly 2 years after her father, Lamar Odom, overdosed in Las Vegas, Nevada, 18-year-old Destiny Odom decided to talk publicly about the terrifying ordeal. In an all-new interview with People/Entertainment Weekly, the star’s daughter recounted exactly what she was doing when she found out about her formerly troubled father. Destiny told the media publications, “It was a school night when I found out. We all thought that he was, that this was it for him and he was going to pass away. But, life is so crazy.” Lamar’s daughter went on to note that she believes her very first visit with her father post-overdose, which lasted just 30 minutes, played a critical role in his miraculous recovery. Destiny explained, “The next morning [after my first visit] he was ripping tubes out of his mouth and I don’t really think that’s a coincidence. I think he was meant to be here because of me and my brother. It sounds like a cheesy movie, but I think that everything happens for a reason.” Later in the interview, Destiny revealed that she has seen drastic changes in her father and his behavior. She gushed, “When you parent is an addict and they get clean it’s like a whole new world. A whole new person, really. It’s crazy what therapy and rehab can do to a person. He’s just a lot more clear and in the moment and he’s more apologetic. He’s able to see more the pain that he’s caused when he’s clean.” Hopefully, Lamar continues on this path and continues to build a stronger relationship with his kids and the rest of his family. It was certainly a family affair for the Teigen-Legend gang on Tuesday, June 6th. Celebrity couple Chrissy Teigen and John Legend brought their 1-year-old, adorable daughter Luna with them to throw the ceremonial pitch at the Seattle Mariners game. Subsequently, the Seattle baseball team faced off against the Minnesota Twins at Safeco Field. Throughout the experience, both John and Chrissy posted pictures of their family outing to their various social media accounts. In one photo, posted by John, little Luna is seen reaching for a bucket of the Mariners players’ bubblegum. The “All of Me” singer captioned the sweet picture, “Mommy and daddy posing. Luna stealing the Mariners’ bubble gum #LunasFirstTour #Seattle.” John Legend, Instagram post: Currently, John, Chrissy and Luna are on the road as John is in the midst of his current tour, The Darkness & Light Tour. John and his crew were already in the Seattle area for the baseball game, as he had performing in Woodinville, Washington on June 3rd and 4th. After the family threw out the ceremonial first pitch, the Mariners tweeted out a post thanking the famous trio. The baseball team posted, “Many thanks to [Chrissy Teigen] and [John Legend] for letting Luna throw out our first pitch. It was a heater right down to the pipe.” Seattle Mariners, Twitter post: https://twitter.com/Mariners/status/872320371512442881 According to recent media reports, Caitlyn Jenner’s memoir The Secrets of My Life didn’t just cause a rift between her and the Kardashian family. This week, a source close to the star told the press that even Caitlyn’s two daughters, Kylie and Kendall Jenner, are distancing themselves from her. While discussing the two young stars’ relationship with their father, the source explained, “Kendall is loyal to Kris and has very little to do with her dad. The more time that has passed, the more she feels Caitlyn has let her down with the things she has said and with her actions.” The source went on to reveal that Kylie is slowly finding herself unable to stay completely out of the inner-family drama between the Kardashians and Caitlyn. The source elaborated, “Kylie has really made an effort to take side and to be supportive of Caitlyn. She really wants to have a relationship with her dad, but Caitlyn has hurt Kris tremendously and it’s made it very difficult. With everyone in the family on Kris’s side, it’s hard on Kylie…She tries to keep it separate and doesn’t want to discuss it with the rest of the family.” As shown recently on the family’s weekly reality show Keeping Up with the Kardashians, tensions are at an all-time high between Caitlyn and the rest of the clan. The same source went on to divulge to the press, “Both [Kendall and Kylie] really struggle with not being close to Caitlyn…It’s left a big void in their lives to not have the father they grew up with. She was a part of their lives every single day.” Here are the biggest takeaways from Caitlyn's book, The Secrets of My Life:
She felt she didn’t deserve the Arthur Ashe Courage Award. Caitlyn writes that she doesn't necessarily feel "brave" because she chose to go public with her gender identity issues, despite the fact that her decision is often described that way. "For me it was a form of cowardice to wait so long," she says, adding that she doesn't think she deserved the award bestowed on her by the ESPYs back in 2015, "but nobody would turn down such an honor."
But wants you to know that it was not a prearranged publicity stunt. Because the ESPYs took place so soon after Caitlyn's Diane Sawyer interview andVanity Fair cover, rumors circulated that she only agreed to do the 20/20 special if she got the award. "It is 100 percent wrong, complete bullshit," Caitlyn writes. "The actual interview took place months before I was told I would be receiving the Arthur Ashe award."
Caitlyn’s publicist first killed a story about her gender identity in the 1980s. After finding out that theNew York Times had been looking "to pin down a story" on Caitlyn wearing women's clothing, Caitlyn told her publicist Alan Nierob about her feelings and had him kill it. "He pounds the crap out of the Times," Caitlyn writes. "It works."
She did a screen test for Superman but didn’t want to cut her hair for the role. "My hair is one of the few ways I can feel my femininity, and it is these tentacles that keep me going, make me feel some tiny piece of my authentic self."
Caitlyn’s relationship with Khloé remains fractured. This much is obvious if you've seen any recent episodes ofKUTWK, but according to Caitlyn, her relationship with Khloé has not fully recovered since her transition. "Khloé has the hardest time with it," she says. "It is something Khloé and I should talk about privately, as we have on many occasions on other sensitive subjects. But we have not, although I have tried. We have not been the same since."
The Kardashians were intentionally left out of the first Diane Sawyer special. If you watched20/20 and thought it seemed like there wasn't very much Kris and the gang, you were right. "They are right to feel slighted," says Caitlyn. "They were slighted on purpose because of research showing that anytime a Kardashian is on television, many in the public tend to think it is a publicity stunt to make money."
During her marriage to Kris, Kris had total control over Caitlyn’s finances. According to Caitlyn, she did not have a checking account during the peakKUTWK days and her credit card purchases were "carefully pored over."
Caitlyn really did not like O.J. Simpson. Caitlyn got to know him via Kris's friendship with Nicole Brown Simpson and never enjoyed spending time with him: "He was the most narcissistic, egocentric, neediest asshole in the world of sports I had ever seen, and I had seen a lot of them."
Caitlyn thought O.J. was guilty, and according to Caitlyn, so did Kris and Robert Kardashian. Caitlyn says that she and Kris "believed he had done it the minute we heard of her murder and the circumstances surrounding it." As for Kardashian, who died in 2003, Caitlyn claims that he once said while in a car, "I would've been OK with it if they'd gotten him in the first trial."
Rumors that Caitlyn regretted transitioning are completely untrue. Ian Halperin, who wrote the unauthorized biography Kardashian Dynasty, claimed in 2016 that Caitlyn regretted her transition. Caitlyn slams these rumors as "100 percent wrong and garbage and swill."
She may have been the real brains behind the KUTWK operation. In one throwaway line, Caitlyn hints that she's actually the person who came up with the idea to film the Kardashian family. "The house is awash in puberty and adolescence and young adulthood and two parents with very different styles," she writes. "It seems to me something is there for television." Then, in a new paragraph: "Kris says she is the one who came up with the idea and decided to actively pitch it to Ryan Seacrest." Care to weigh in, Ryan?
Caitlyn’s family was embarrassed by KUTWK. Caitlyn says her aunt Ellie sent a letter to her and Kris after the show debuted about how Caitlyn had become a "disappointment" to her fans. "The implication is that I have sold myself out, willingly destroyed what positive reputation I have left," she writes. "Pretty much on the mark."
But Caitlyn says her depiction on the show was more or less accurate. "I come across in the reality show as a well-meaning but slightly doddering patriarch who has no life of his own and is subsumed by the women who surround him and only does what his wife tells him," she writes. "In other words: a totally true depiction."
Burt, Brandon, and Brody Jenner hated Caitlyn’s Vanity Fair cover. Caitlyn says it had less to do with the photograph being "risqué" and more to do with the fact that she "did not gauge how a son would feel seeing his father in a cream-colored bustier."
Kim was a little disappointed that Caitlyn spelled her name with a "C." Caitlyn's recollection of this conversation makes it seem like Kim was joking, but Caitlyn also had this to say about Kim even asking about it: "Spoken like a true Kardashian."
Caitlyn had gender confirmation surgery, which she calls "the Final Surgery," in January 2017. While this is not something a transgender person ever has an obligation to discuss (and Caitlyn herself reiterates several times that it's no one's business but the person who's having it), Caitlyn says she chose to include it because she wanted to be able to stop talking about it. "I feel not only wonderful but liberated," she writes. "I am telling you because I believe in candor. So all of you can stop staring. You want to know, so now you know. Which is why this is the first time, and the last time, I will ever speak of it."

RICK HORROW’S TOP 10 SPORTS/BIZ/TECH/PHILANTHROPY ISSUES FOR THE WEEK OF OCTOBER 21 : MAYOR’S EDITION
with Jacob Aere
TV broadcasters and streamers invested $38 billion in sports rights in 2018, nearly double the $20 billion spent in 2012. Globally, TV broadcasters, and to a lesser degree, online streamers, fork out 26% of their total content spend on sports rights, according to a report published last Wednesday by Ampere Analysis and carried by the Hollywood Reporter. The market for sports rights has nearly doubled in the last six years, from $20 billion in 2012 to $38 billion last year. The U.S. remains the largest single market for sports rights, with a $19 billion annual spend, a figure likely to jump as new rights cycles kick in for the NFL, MLB, and the NBA. Ampere forecasts the top U.S. leagues generating $4 billion more per year in rights revenues by the end of the next six years. And in Europe, broadcasters and online players in Europe's big five markets – the U.K., France, Germany, Italy, and Spain – shelled out $11 billion for sports rights in 2018, double the amount from six years ago. European broadcasters and pay TV operators in the big five spend a third of their content budget, on average, on sports, compared to 26% in the U.S.
espnW and the U.S. Department of State are hosting the eighth year of the Global Sports Mentoring Program October 11-November 19. The program will see 16 emerging female leaders from around the world begin a month-long mentorship in the United States alongside top American female executives from some of the most influential organizations in sports and business. Including ESPN, executive mentors in the 2019 program represent: the Big East Conference; Creative Artists Agency (CAA); Google; LISC; Minnesota Lynx/ Timberwolves; the NCAA; New Balance; the NHL; Saatchi & Saatchi, Spurs Sports & Entertainment; the University of Connecticut; and the U.S. Tennis Association (USTA). The initiative joins such other events as this week’s espnW Women + Sports Summit in Newport Beach, CA and the recently-completed LPGA Indy Women in Tech Driven by Group1001 tournament and week-long symposium that promote women’s leadership, education, and advancement both in and out of sport.
MLS will officially award Sacramento an expansion franchise this week. According to the Sacramento Bee, MLS will hold a press conference and fan event in California’s capital city on Monday to announce that the United Soccer League’s Sacramento Republic FC will make the step up to become MLS’ 29th team. Sacramento has been attempting to secure an MLS expansion team since 2015, but its chances were improved at the beginning of this year when Ron Burkle, billionaire part-owner of the Pittsburgh Penguins, joined the Republic as lead investor. The Republic then received city council backing in April for a new $252 million, 20,000-seat stadium. Later that month, the Republic emerged as a front runner in the race to join MLS when the league announced it had been authorized to advance talks with the ownership groups of Sacramento and St Louis, which was officially awarded its own expansion team in August. If Sacramento is confirmed, it will pay a $200 million expansion fee to become the fourth MLS team in California. Confirmation would also mean that MLS has only one spot left to fill if it is to stick to its expansion target of 30 teams.
Tiger Woods has been the subject of countless articles, books, and TV segments, but for the first time, he will tell his story in his own words. Last Tuesday, Harper Collins announced Woods’ BACK, a memoir chronicling the golfer’s life from growing up a celebrated golfing prodigy to shattering racial barriers and rising to fame, then facing continuing injuries and personal scandal, to mounting a comeback at 43 years old culminating with the 2019 Masters. “I’ve been in the spotlight for a long time, and because of that, there have been books and articles and TV shows about me, most filled with errors, speculative and wrong,” Woods said in the statement. “This book is my definitive story.” No publication date has been announced; the release stated that BACK will be “the first and only account directly from Woods, with the full cooperation of his friends, family, and inner circle.” For the moment, however, Woods is focused on “The Challenge: Japan Skins,” a big money made-for-TV match with Rory McIlroy, Jason Day, and Hideki Matsuyama taking place at Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club in Chiba, Japan.
Formula 1 eyes Miami to host its first-ever Grand Prix after reaching an agreement in principle to host a race at Hard Rock Stadium beginning in 2021. The proposed Formula One Miami Grand Prix would see F1 cars navigating a custom-built track around the stadium. Formula One had initially set its sights on a downtown track location, only to scrap the proposal in favor of Hard Rock Stadium, home to the Miami Dolphins, after local opposition. Concerns remain among residents over noise, traffic and pollution, though organizers insist this new location would reduce disruption compared to a downtown race. According to the Miami Herald, Dolphins and stadium owner Steve Ross will cover all race costs, including an expected $40 million custom track. It takes Formula One a step closer to holding a second U.S. race, a long-held ambition for the global motor racing series’ owners, Liberty Media. Since 2012, the sole F1 stop in the U.S. has been the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. A Miami F1 race would have an estimated annual impact of more than $400 million and 35,000 room nights.
ATP Media, the in-house rights agency for the global men’s tennis tour, saw revenues rise by 6.7% to $120.96 million in 2018. The UK-based production hub, which is also responsible for ATP Tour content creation, has registered gross profits of $13.57 million. The spike represents a 9.6% growth compared to the end of 2017. Broadcast rights sales, where ATP Media works alongside IMG, remain the dominant source of income. ATP Media also said it had benefitted from “favorable movements” on the euro and British pound exchange rates during last year. Broken up geographically, the UK operation generated $11.59 million in revenues at the end of 2018, while the rest of Europe raked in $31.91 million behind $77.45 million generated by ATP Media in other international territories. Among several of the media group’s high-profile broadcast deals, 2019 has already seen ATP Media secure an improved five-year agreement with Amazon Prime Video in the UK, which runs through the 2023 ATP season. In addition, deals were confirmed with Discovery-owned Eurosport in France and Sky Deutschland in Germany.
Finally, before a big game, it’s important for fans to get a Goodyear night’s sleep. The Goodyear Blimp has provided aerial coverage of college football games since 1955, and later this season will become the first non-player or coach to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Now, Forbes reports, fans will have the chance to stay in the iconic dirigible prior to the Notre Dame vs. Michigan game October 26. One-night stays can be booked through Airbnb for October 22, 23, and 24 in the blimp hangar in Mogadore, Ohio. Each night is priced at $150 (plus taxes and fees) to celebrate college football’s 150th anniversary. Guests "will have exclusive access to the Goodyear hangar, which is the size of 2.6 football fields, and a football lounge will be provided where guests can relax and watch some of the all-time best rivalry games in college football history.” Goodyear and Airbnb will also collectively donate $5,000 to the Cotton Bowl Foundation, which supports college football-related causes. While the blimp will remain on the ground, this takes “Air”bnb to a whole new level.
FOX Bet becomes an MLB authorized gaming operator just days before the World Series.  According to Sports Handle, FOX Bet announced a multi-year partnership with Major League Baseball under which the online and mobile betting platform will become an Authorized Gaming Operator of MLB. The announcement came exactly a week before the scheduled first pitch of Game 1 of the 2019 World Series on October 22. FOX Sports, an MLB broadcast partner, has televised the World Series in every season since 2000. FOX Bet is the fourth sports betting entity to join MLB’s Authorized Gaming Operator program since the Supreme Court’s historic PASPA decision in May 2018, joining MGM Resorts International, DraftKings, and FanDuel as MLB official data licensees under the program. The partnership is the latest in a string of deals for the network’s nascent sports betting division. FOX is looking to go all in on sports betting – this partnership marks the third deal that FOX Bet has inked with a major U.S. pro sports league, including the NBA and a deal with the NFL through its Super 6 contest.
Ex-NFL star Warrick Dunn helps deliver 173rd home to single parent for charity. According to FOX Business, the former NFL running back helped surprise a single Florida mother with a new home Wednesday through his charity along with Habitat for Humanity and health care company Cigna. Warrick Dunn Charities, which is run by the former Pro Bowler, presented LaToya Reedy with a new home in St. Petersburg. It was the 173rd home the charity has given thanks to its “Home for the Holidays” campaign, which helps single parents achieve home ownership. Reedy told local media she had been working hard as a nursing assistant to provide a stable lifestyle for her 18-year-old son, but high rent prices and living paycheck to paycheck was getting difficult. Before Dunn became a pro football player, he was living with a single mother who worked very hard to provide for him and five other children, but his mother was killed before his 18th birthday and he helped raise his siblings while playing college football. Dunn sees his charity as a form of therapy to deal with his own traumas, taking comfort that he is helping others avoid similar housing and economic struggles.
Michael Jordan donates a huge sum to two Novant Health clinics in Charlotte, North Carolina. During a recent speech, Jordan teared up as he spoke about his $7.2 million donation to two Novant Health clinics in his area. According to the Charlotte Observer, The Novant Health Michael Jordan Family Clinic and a second facility expected to open soon nearby will serve at least 35,000 children and adults over the next five years. The clinics provide both primary health care services as well as access to social workers, behavioral health experts, oral health practitioners, and physical therapy. Jordan’s financial gift to Novant Health is the latest in his philanthropic giving in Charlotte and his home state of North Carolina. Jordan has significantly ramped up his charitable giving since he became the majority owner of the Charlotte Hornets in 2010. The Novant Health Michael Jordan Family Medical Clinic opened just over three weeks ago, and has already cared for more than 300 people. It is particularly important for Charlotte families to get the health care they deserve, as the city ranks last among major U.S. cities in enabling people to lift themselves out of poverty.

RICK HORROW’S  TOP 10 SPORTS/BIZ/TECH/PHILANTHROPY ISSUES FOR THE WEEK OF JULY 22 : MAYOR’S EDITION
with Reed Weber
Shane Lowry pocketed a cool $1.935 million for winning The Open Championship. He also netted thousands of new fans, and helped to unify Ireland through his sport. The affable Lowry, who came oh-so-close to winning the 2016 U.S. Open before blowing a four-shot lead to winner Dustin Johnson, has career earnings of close to $19 million, and his win on Sunday will almost certainly also include a bonus from primary sponsors Immedis and Banc of Ireland. However, the 2019 Open could potentially make an even bigger cultural mark. "This is the beginning of the Open taking its place as the Open and moving around the world…In my lifetime it is possible to see it being played in the Netherlands or maybe Australia," two-time winner of the Claret Jug Padraig Harrington shared with the Irish Times regarding Royal Portrush serving as a catalyst to take the major around the globe. Lowry is certain to be the face of Irish golf in the yearlong run up to the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, especially as colleague Rory McIlroy struggles with his big-stage game.
Major League Baseball could allow for sponsorship patches on its teams’ uniforms within three years, the league confirmed to SportsBusiness Journal. The success of the NBA decision to allow jersey branding, which brings in an average $7 million a year per team, has reportedly created “considerable interest” for MLB teams to follow suit. Van Wagner Sports & Entertainment confirmed to SBJ that it had been approached by MLB franchises for evaluations of the potential new inventory. The Excel sports agency, which worked on multiple NBA patch deals, also revealed that it had received inquiries from “curious” teams regarding the marketplace. “We’re examining the patch, but clearly we have things to work through first,” MLB EVP Noah Garden told SBJ. “I’d say it’s inevitable down the road, but certainly not immediate. This is something that requires a fairly long runway.” The new patch sponsorships would require the approval of the MLBPA as part of the next collective bargaining agreement, but MLB’s current uniform deal with Nike reportedly includes provision for uniform patches. Van Wagner estimated that deals could be worth $6-$8 million, with select high-profile teams able to secure more.
A 22% minority stake in the Oklahoma City Thunder has been put up for sale, according to Bloomberg. The team share was previously owned by late oilman Aubrey McClendon, who passed away in a car crash in 2016. McClendon’s 22% ownership stake has reportedly been held by his estate since his death. The Thunder are worth $1.475 billion, according to Forbes, which would value a 22% stake in the team at around $324.5 million. However, Bloomberg’s report added that a value for McClendon’s stake could be discounted because it comes with voting rights but little else. The share does not come with representation on the board or any decision-making authority. The Thunder are controlled by Clay Bennett, whose Professional Basketball Club investment group purchased the Seattle Supersonics in 2006 before moving the franchise to Oklahoma City ahead of the 2008-2009 season. Likely also for sale soon: The multi-million dollar estate former Thunder star Russell Westbrook just completed in Oklahoma City suburb Nichols Hills – although there’s no yard sign up just yet. OKC residents continue to appear supportive of the star point guard even though he left the franchise, as the city is dotted with “Thank You Russell Westbrook” signs.
LeBron James’ agent starts a sports division at major Hollywood firm. United Talent Agency, one of the leading representation firms in Hollywood, has joined with the agent for nearly two dozen NBA stars, Rich Paul, to create a sports division for the entertainment company. Paul, who most famously represents James under his Klutch Sports Group banner, was named the head of UTA Sports. The alliance calls for Klutch, with Paul as chief executive, to operate as United Talent’s sports division while retaining its own branding. Klutch’s deal with UTA was initiated by the investment adviser Paul Wachter, who helped broker Fenway Sports Group’s 2002 purchase of EPL club Liverpool, as well as James’ lifetime deal with Nike. UTA, which restricted itself to off-the-field sports business until now, said it needs Paul’s muscle as it moves into direct competition with the established sports divisions at its primary rivals in Hollywood: CAA and WME. For years, Paul’s achievements were often dismissed as a natural by-product of his close relationship with James, who was still a teenager when they became friends. Today he is a force to be reckoned with, not just in sports, but now in entertainment.
MLS’ Fire to pay $65.5 million to move matches. According to JohnWallStreet, MLS’ Chicago Fire Soccer Club, ranked last in home attendance (averaging 11,417 per game), will amend their SeatGeek Stadium lease to allow for future home games to be played “in other Chicagoland sports venues.” Majority owner Andrew Hauptman believes moving games from the Village of Bridgeview to downtown Chicago will give the club “the opportunity to play [in front of] more fans than ever.” The Fire reportedly plan to play home games at Soldier Field next season. Chicago Fire SC is paying $65.5 million to get out of their existing lease. The organization will pay the Village $10 million upfront and make an additional $5 million donation to upgrade sporting facilities around the stadium. The $50.5 million balance will be paid in $3.5 million annual increments through 2036. Hauptman is paying $30 million more to move the team's home matches than he paid to acquire the club in 2007. But with expansion franchises now selling for $200 million, even with the buyout – and the $70+ million he’s lost over the last seven years – he will likely come out ahead.
X Games Minneapolis 2019 is set for August 1-4 at U.S. Bank Stadium, and ESPN is putting the finishing touches on its sponsor roster. This year, Wendy’s is joining returning sponsors Hotels.com, Monster Energy, Nexcar First Aid Products, Pacifico, SoFi, The Real Cost, and Harley-Davidson. Geico will once again serve as the official music stage sponsor. The sponsorship packages include a media presence within the 18 hours of coverage scheduled on ESPN, ESPN2, ABC, and the ESPN App, as well as content creation and on-site activation at the event. The Tokyo Olympics are now one year out, and those Games will feature more extreme sports than ever before, including new entrants sport climbing and surfing joining skateboarding, BMX racing, and other X Games staples. With that in mind, it is highly likely that the upcoming X Games Minneapolis will see a bigger viewing audience as well as the expanded sponsor roster.
REI looks to bolster environmental and outdoor journalism. According to PR Newswire, REI Co-op will debut its own print magazine this fall, as well as a new partnership to channel matching funds directly to local, nonprofit newsrooms covering crucial issues facing the outdoors. The 81-year-old retailer will retire its full-price mail-order catalog in favor of their print magazine, Uncommon Path, published by Hearst Magazines in collaboration with an in-house team of journalists and editors at REI. Uncommon Path will be available at all 155 REI stores and in select newsstands nationwide starting this fall. The purpose of the switch to magazines is to inspire a life outdoors by supporting compelling storytelling – both REI’s own channels and by supporting independent nonprofit journalists in communities across the country. The retailer is also announcing a new partnership with NewsMatch, a nationwide campaign to strengthen local journalism to help bolster climate change coverage and make people more conscious of life outdoors.
Yahoo! Sports starts NFL short-form series “Play It Forward.” According to Deadline, “Play It Forward” has two 11-minute episodes each week on Mondays and Thursdays for eight weeks across the off-season and feature the likes of Antonio Brown, Adrian Peterson, and Desean Jackson. The show will give viewers a glimpse into the players’ rise to the top and the ways they give back to the people who have supported them along the way. “Play it Forward” is produced by Bright Bay Creative, the nascent production company run by former Ice Road Truckers producer Brandon Killion and his wife Jill, in association with Complex Networks. The philanthropy isn’t necessarily on a non-profit level, but it shows the difference players can make in individual’s lives off the field.
Texas Rangers slugger Joey Gallo discovers his off-field power to help dogs find homes. According to the MLBPA’s Infield Chatter on Twitter, Joey Gallo has overcome his childhood fear of dogs and teamed up with Operation Kindness to find homes for the original no-kill animal shelter in North Texas. By harnessing his image and posing next to animals from the shelter, Gallo posted photos of some of the shelter’s dogs on social media and saw an immediate response. Within an hour of posting photos with the adoptable dogs, Operation Kindness had found homes for the animals. Gallo has also owned his own Labrador Retriever named Ranger for four years and plans to continue his philanthropic efforts as he says the best part about being an athlete is the stage to “promote good in the world.”
The fifth annual Mixed Doubles Charity Classic is ready to fight opioid abuse. According to the York Dispatch, the Charity Classic at the Country Club of York has the goal of raising money to fight drug abuse that has plagued the USA and specifically New York. In previous years, the event has raised more than $100,000 for charity, including $65,000 raised last year for the York Opioid Collaborative. The fifth annual tournament is sponsored by UPMC Health Plan and will again benefit that same cause which “seeks to reduce opioid deaths in York County,” according to the non-profit’s website. The tournament features high quality tennis players including Jenni Goodling and has a total purse of $5,000 for the winners. A total of 16 teams are lined up to compete. New York saw 172 overdose deaths from opioids in 2018 and has seen a reduction to just 36 so far in 2019 thanks to the awareness around the crisis which has been aided by charities and media events such as the Mixed Doubles Charity Classic.

15 TO WATCH: RICK HORROW’S TOP SPORTS/NEWS/BUSINESS/MARKETING/ENDORSEMENT ISSUES FOR THE WEEK OF JANUARY 23
  With Jamie Swimmer
If downtown Los Angeles doesn’t wash away by next weekend, after record rains, the city, Staples Center, and host LA Kings look forward to hosting the NHL’s best during the league’s annual All-Star break. Sunny skies are predicted for NHL All-Star weekend, comprising the annual skills contest, 3 on 3 All-Star game, and mobile “Centennial Fan Arena,” featuring the league's Museum Truck, an "interactive virtual Zamboni ride station,” and photo ops with the Stanley Cup. The All-Star game, in its second season as a division-based, 3 on 3 mini-tournament with a $1-million prize on the line, takes place Sunday. The All-Star weekend takes on extra importance this year, as it is one in a series of year-long events celebrating the NHL’s centennial milestone. A major highlight is Friday’s recognition of 100 of the greatest NHL players of all time – including, of course, “Great One” Wayne Gretzky. Like most All-Star contests, the NHL’s annual celebration is all about exciting and entertaining the fans, and next week’s Hollywood-adjacent extravaganza will be no different. Just expect more famous faces behind the glass.
Wayne Gretzky won’t be the only sports GOAT in Southern California next weekend – Tiger Woods is set to make his 2017 PGA Tour debut at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course. While the newly-revamped Torrey Pines course will play the same – difficult, especially following strong rough-lengthening rains – new partnerships and resulting fan amenities, including new food and beverage and entertainment options, are changing  the way this PGA tournament is conducted. And with Woods and local favorite Phil Mickelson on course, this year’s Farmer’s will surely be crowded, and noisy. Tournament Director Peter Ripa has recruited extra marshals for duty this year, and anticipates doubling the 22 million viewers the tournament enjoyed in 2016. While the tournament might not break attendance and viewership records, one of its partner charities, Boys to Men Mentoring, a local program for fatherless teenage boys, once again has the opportunity to break the world record for number of surfers on one wave during Saturday’s One Wave Challenge. Innovative fan experiences and abundant philanthropy are hallmarks of the PGA Tour, and the Torrey Pines event is no exception. Watching a healthy Woods and Mickelson is only part of the fun.
As we head into 2017, LA 2024’s Olympic bid is slowly being revealed. According to the LA Times, LA 2024 is planning to split the opening and closing ceremonies between two venues, using both the LA Memorial Coliseum and the new Inglewood NFL venue. The Inglewood site will become the home to both the Rams and Chargers upon completion. Though USC has plans for a $270 million Coliseum renovation, the stadium "dates back to the first time" L.A. hosted the Games in 1932. LA 2024 "needed to feature" the Inglewood stadium, if only to "counteract a sense of 'been there, done that.'" As it is currently planned, the opening ceremony would be held at the Coliseum, paying tribute to its Olympic history, while the closing ceremony would be held at the Inglewood NFL palace, shining a bright light on the city’s future. The Los Angeles region will continue to capitalize on its biggest strength and asset – existing infrastructure and a solid legacy of the success of previous Games. Look for that theme to be continuously emphasized until the successful selection in early fall.
The Golden State Warriors have official broken ground on their new state-of-the-art arena in San Francisco. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the team held a groundbreaking ceremony for their new Chase Center that “resembled Cirque du Soleil more than it did a construction job.” The site where the arena is being built is in the city’s Mission Bay neighborhood, though it was originally planned on being erected at Piers 30-32 until lawsuits stopped that plan in its tracks. The Chase Center is projected to open in 2019 and will have a capacity of 18,000 seats. San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee and others at the groundbreaking "emphasized that the arena is being built on private property without a public subsidy – a rarity in professional sports." Warriors co-Owner Joe Lacob said, "We are totally good to go. It’s not surreal anymore. It’s real." Lacob and his team have done an incredible job securing the arena commitment in an intense and politically charged environment. As for Oakland, the pressure heats up – they have lost one team, the football team files for relocation, and the baseball team is looking for other sites. Game on, Oakland!
The on-field success of the Super Bowl-bound Atlanta Falcons has played a huge role in the team’s improved Personal Seat License sales. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, PSL sales have risen “from less than 33,000 at the start of the season to more than 41,000 now,” a significant increase in a relatively short period of time. Now, the team has only about 20,000 seats left to sell before the venue opens in the fall, prior to the 2017 NFL season kick off. The Falcons have "received a significant number of leads on potential additional sales" since their win in the NFL Divisional round over the Seattle Seahawks. The Falcons "haven’t said how many seats are in the PSL inventory, but after excluding seats that are part of sponsorship deals, in suites or held out for group sales and other purposes, the number of sellable seats to the general public is believed to be around 61,000." Historically, team performance is directly related to suite, seat, and PSL sales. Fortunately for Arthur Blank and the Falcons, the team is realizing its true potential just as the marketing of the stadium is most important.  Good timing, Falcons!
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is coming under heavy scrutiny for his choice to attend the NFC Championship game instead of the AFC Championship. According to the Boston Herald, it appears that Goodell is “afraid to show his face” in Boston following Deflategate, which resulted in the suspension of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady. Similar to the conference championship round, the commissioner elected to travel to Atlanta to see the Falcons take on the Seahawks instead of attending to Patriots-Texans game in Foxborough. Boston columnist Dan Shaughnessy directly challenged Goodell on this topic. "What is the big deal, Roger?” said Shaughnessy. “You are not Salman Rushdie hiding from the followers of the Ayatollah Khomeini…You are the commissioner of the NFL. You are the protector of the Shield. You won the Deflategate war. Come back to Foxborough and face the angry nation." Despite this issue being over, emotions still seem to be running high across the league. In a classic case of “you can’t make everybody happy,” Goodell apparently needs an intergalactic transport to get him to both games on the same day. With the Patriots advancing to the Super Bowl to face the Falcons, look for Goodell to craft many favorable media opportunities showing him making nice with the team, Pats fans, and owner Robert Kraft.
Despite not winning a single major this past year, Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy finished as the world’s top-paid golfer in 2016. According to the London Daily Mail, McIlroy raked in a whopping $49.5 million, placing him atop golf’s “rich list” for the first time. He "amassed a fortune in just one year thanks in no small part to winning the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup," and the $10 million bonus that comes with it. While his on-course earnings totaled around $17.5 million, his off-course earnings are what separated him from the pack. Thanks in part to sponsorship deals from companies like Nike, Omega, Bose, and Electronic Arts, McIlroy’s off-course earnings amounted to approximately $32.5 million. Remarkably, Arnold Palmer earned more than anyone else in the game other than McIlroy in the year that he died at age 87: $40 million, "thanks to his portfolio of golf businesses and own brand of iced tea." Arnold Palmer will always be the king of branding and endorsements. He undoubtedly set the standard for Tiger Woods, and now will do the same for McIlroy in his off-the-course branding aspirations and business performance.
The surge of the U.S. dollar has bolstered the domestic economy, but it has been detrimental to many Mexican soccer clubs. According to ESPN.com, Liga MX clubs have been negatively affected by the strengthening of the dollar because “league expenses are in dollars and revenues are in pesos.” Over the past four years, the U.S. dollar has increased its value by almost 10 pesos, which has “made things difficult for football clubs, who are searching for different ways to deal with the devaluation.” For example, “if a player was bought for $8 million in 2013, the equivalent in Mexican currency was 102 million pesos. Now, the same cost in dollars would amount to 176 million pesos.” The reason that the clubs have their revenues in pesos is because most money that the clubs receive, with the exception of TV contracts, come is pesos – ticket sales, food, beverages, etc. The cooperative sports connections between Mexico, Canada, and the U.S. will no doubt continue as parties explore the feasibility of a 2026 World Cup bid. In the meantime, each country struggles with its competitive balance as it relates to exchange rate, facilities, player transfers, and the like.
The Chicago Blackhawks have one of the best records in the NHL, but the team’s local TV ratings do not reflect that. According to Crain’s Chicago Business, the Blackhawks have “posted an average local rating of 3.15” for their 29 broadcasts on CSN Chicago thus far, which is “down 17% from the same point last season.” But these statistics may be a bit skewed due to one critical factor: the team’s early games overlapped with the Chicago Cubs’ World Series run. Three Blackhawks telecasts on CSN Chicago went up against Cubs NLCS or World Series games, "including the lowest-rated game thus far on Nov. 1" against the Flames, which posted a 1.31 rating. Ever since the Cubs ended their season as world champions, the Blackhawks have seen a steady climb in local ratings as eyes turned back to the rink from the diamond. This is clearly a case of continued astronomical expectations coupled with “Cubmania” in Chicagoland. It’s a pleasant problem for Chicago to have: two championship-worthy teams struggling for superiority at the gate and on television.
Things are finally starting to look up for U.S. men’s tennis. After years without a deep pool of domestic talent, “seven U.S. men 20 or younger made it into the 128-player main draw for the Australian Open.” According to the New York Times, “the last time the U.S. had that many 20-or-younger players in a major was the 2006 U.S. Open, and at this week's tournament the country has “more men competing in singles (14) than any other nation.” Many of these budding American players have grown up training together at the USTA’s former development complex in Boca Raton, and are now taking a collective, team-like approach entering major tournaments. Twenty-three-year-old Bjorn Fratangelo said, “It’s really changed the perspective for the players; we do feel as if we’re a small team.” The USTA’s new training complex recently opened in Orlando, where these same players often room and workout together. While Jack Sock and John Isner are the faces of the current American program, look for new, diverse, and talented fresh faces in the years to come. New facilities and programs clearly have that effect on all types of programs all across the globe.
English Premier League clubs in London were recently urged to sign up for the Living Wage initiative by city Mayor Sadiq Khan. According to the Evening Standard, Khan wants the London-based clubs to set an example for other businesses across the city. Owners and chairs from Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, and Crystal Palace were all approached in regard to this and were told that it “could not be right” that so many Londoners “were still struggling to make ends meet.” The mayor believes that all EPL clubs should have to pay staff living wages, but he is strategically starting with only the London-based teams. Current EPL leader Chelsea, which signed up in 2014, is the "only top club in London already paying all its employees" the voluntary London Living Wage. In a letter, Khan said that paying all workers the wage was a “win-win” situation for their businesses as it could “help recruitment, retention and productivity of staff.” The EPL is always a symbolic standard for UK businesses, as well as the rest of Europe. The wage issue should be a major focus in the months ahead.
There is no doubt regarding the prestige and honor associated with attending a U.S. service academy, but many prospective student-athletes have been steered away from them throughout the years due to their postgrad service requirement. But last spring’s dropping of the minimum “two-year postgrad active duty requirement” has changed the game for service academies. According to Sports Illustrated, attracting top recruits has become easier for academies thanks to the new policy, which states that “any academy athlete can now turn pro immediately, his or her two years of active duty replaced by eight to 10 years in the reserves.” “For us to continue to have the maximum influence (as an institution), I think it's pivotal that we are able to recruit better athletes,” stated former NFLer and West Point alumnus Caleb Campbell. Not every is jumping for joy though; many traditionalists at the academies firmly believe that all graduates should serve, regardless of their athletic ability. Ironically, the on-field performance of Army and Navy continues to show results, even though it is clearly harder to maintain a consistent and stable quality program on the field.
Defined by lackluster and embarrassing on-court performances over the past few years, the Philadelphia 76ers are finally starting to turn things around, and their merchandise sales reflect that. According to CSNPhilly.com, the 76ers ranked "fourth among all NBA teams in total merchandise sales over the past seven days,” just behind the Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Chicago Bulls. Leading the way for the 76ers has been big man Joel Embiid, whose jersey was the fifth-best seller over that same period of time. The Sixers have "ranked in the league’s top 10 of merchandise sales since the beginning" of the 2016-17 season. They “hold the largest year-over-year increase during that timeframe in the NBA this season.” Similar to their increase in merchandise sales, the 76ers have also seen a 10% increase in home attendance from last year to this year. The 82.9% ticket sales rate per home contest represents the “highest attendance the Sixers have had” since Hall of Famer Allen Iverson last played in Philadelphia. The 76ers have had a tremendous history and an intense and avid following – Julius Erving, Will Chamberlain, and Iverson. It will clearly benefit the NBA when (and if) the 76ers, Lakers, and Knicks become “good” again.
Target is making a heavy investment in MLS after signing a multiyear deal to become an official partner of the ever-growing domestic soccer league. According to SportsBusiness Journal, the deal represents Target’s “largest-ever push into team sports.” “As part of its MLS deal, Target will have airtime during league broadcasts on ESPN, Fox Sports, and Univision, as well as in-stadium exposure and on-site activation.” Financial details regarding the deal have not yet been disclosed, but the deal has been confirmed as large enough to make Target “one of the largest supporters of soccer in the U.S.” The Minnesota-based retailer also inked a deal with MLS expansion club Minnesota United to put its logo on the front of the team’s jersey. Minnesota United will begin play in 2018 and will eventually move into its own soccer-specific stadium, pending construction. Good for the MLS to secure additional corporate partners – especially a premier consumer brand like Target. Television, stadiums, ownership, market share, and corporate partnerships continue to be the backbone of all sports leagues (including MLS).
As longtime sponsors continue to abandon the USOC, A-B InBev is the latest example of a high-profile partner electing not to renew its contract with the organizing committee. According to SportsBusiness Journal, “the brewer’s Budweiser brand has been the first and only official beer of Team USA since 1984,” and the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics marked an end to that streak. With the next three consecutive Olympics being held in Asia (2018 in PyeongChang, South Korea; 2020 in Tokyo, Japan; 2022 in Beijing, China) sponsors are “worried about maintaining fan engagement during far-flung Games.” A-B InBev joins Hilton, Citi, TD Ameritrade, and AT&T as sponsors not renewing contracts with the USOC at this time. “The malt beverage category is now open with the USOC, along with hotels, banks and online brokerages.” All of this is happening despite Los Angeles’s encouraging bid to land the 2024 Olympics. Over time, the USOC will continue to expand and diversify its brand. Assuming Los Angeles is chosen for 2024, and assuming the brand continues to evolve, look for more USOC sponsors to commit at a higher level in the years ahead.
