Water, Water Everywhere is a middle-of-the-road episode of The A-Team. It’s testament to the show’s quality that even a middling adventure is as entertaining as this. Setting handicapped veterans against a wealthy landowner is another classic underdog story but it’s the enduring threat of Gaines’ that keeps this one alive. Despite the usual defeats to the team, it’s clear he isn’t going to be beaten easily – he has the money and the patience to get what he wants.⠀ ⠀ The high-power hose battle at the end is very similar to the recent cabbage canon finale, but not as interesting. It’s always hard to suspend disbelief whenever villains lose to water. The Maltese Cow is a standout episode of The A-Team thanks to its use of two main bad guys with a plan already in motion. Responding to a fairly traditional protection racket to help an old friend, the team are drawn into a budding alliance between the Chinatown Tong and an LA mobster. I’m always a fan of episodes that set up our expectations then move onto to something new.⠀ ⠀ Without Amy, there’s more time for the team to interact with each other and for the story to develop. It allows for a more intricate plot and a range of villains, including a memorable performance from an Oddjob-like henchman who’s a rare physical match for BA (as well as two perfectly-cast lead villains). The White Ballot is another example of why The A-Team exploded in popularity and become a cultural icon in the 1980s. Without being particularly inventive in the story and whilst recycling a villain from the previous season, this episode is still top-quality entertainment. It’s funny, non-stop action with no time wasted – every scene rushes us forwards to something exciting.⠀ ⠀ Clifton James excels as a character even closer to his famous Live and Let Die character, JW Pepper, than last time. He’s a real threat again though, as you see him rise from annoyance to deciding to execute the whole team (including Amy) – thanks to his backstory we know it’s no idle threat as he’s left at least two men in a ditch before. Steel gets better the longer it goes on, making it an excellent episode of The A-Team. Setting up the usual underdog story for the first half, then taking it up a level with the introduction of the mob boss with a life-or-death problem is a great twist. Coming halfway through the second season, when we’ve gotten very used to the rhythm of episodes, it shakes things up in welcome way.⠀ ⠀ Both villains fill their roles perfectly. Denham offers a traditional threat of sabotage and unfair play, making him threatening from the opening scene. When we meet Tillis, initially as a mysterious boss, the tension rises as we know he’s capable of killing to protect his secrets. The team have to be at their best to confront the two, all playing to their strengths especially when Face is captured. There’s Always a Catch is a solid if not quite amazing episode of The A-Team. Taking on another hopeless case without payment shows their continuing softer side after their work in Labor Pains. The setup is classic, with a protection racket amongst lobster fishers and just one brave family refusing to pay up.⠀ ⠀ Garber is a decent villain, but it’s Decker’s rare success in ambushing the team that elevates this adventure. It’s always exciting to see the team captured by the army and have to escape while still defeating the villain of the episode.
