Guitar heroes: Celebrity music tools on auction block

NEW YORK, N.Y. — Just wanted to play a guitar like one of the musical idols? You could be given that chance by an auction of instruments played by the likes of Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty. (Unfortunately, fame and talent never included.)
Guernsey’s is supplying amplifiers in addition to those tools, tapes of performances and the top of jazz great Thelonious Monk.
The “Legendary Guitars and Musical Treasures” marketplace is scheduled for Dec. 2 in New York. Those interested could attend in person or make online and phone bids.
The offers include a 1963 Fender Precision Bass that Springsteen employed for just two songs about his debut album, “Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J.,” using a beginning quote of $40,000, and an acoustic guitar that Petty played on tours in the early 1980s, beginning at $20,000.
“There’s not much that would be explained as ordinary in the selling,” said Arlan Ettinger, president of Guernsey’s.
The catalog contains a 1989 Gibson L4 that David Bowie played in the late 1980s, beginning at $30,000, and a 1967 Electric Guild Starfire V played by Jimi Hendrix, beginning at $140,000. The proceeds from the sale of this Hendrix guitar are all going toward philanthropy.
Non-instrument offers comprise a list written by the Grateful Dead’s Jerry Garcia and recordings of performances by a ton of artists such as The Beach Boys, Linda Ronstadt and Liza Minnelli.
