All the car enthusiasts I know love the idea of a long, luxurious, American boat of a car. It doesn't matter what their main interest is: racing, motorcycles, dog farming, or lifted trucks. Everyone likes the idea of getting some old lead sled made in the U.S. of A, and accelerating smoothly and comfortably onto the highway, where their fellow motorists are too afraid to pass for fear they may be a gangster or just elderly.
How do American manufacturers respond to this universal desire for their product? By not making these cars anymore. That's right, you can't buy a boat. If you want a luxury sedan, you're going to be buying a sports sedan in the image of the Germans, only not as good. If you want heavy, boaty luxury from an American automaker, you will instead get some long-wheelbase school bus of a body-on-frame SUV, which costs as much as a house.
As intimidating as those vehicles can be, they more or less look identical to every other SUV on the road. It takes a Ph. D in large-displacement vehicles to identify them, and by the time you're done pointing out the essential differences which make a Cadillac Escalade visually distinct from a Chevy Suburban, your date has walked out, and you're stuck picking up the cheque for two at Applebee's. This is not the case with the land barges of old: you can absolutely tell the difference between a 1988 Town Car and a 1988 Ford Escort.
There is hope, however. I've devised an elaborate body kit that will transform a cheap sedan into a luxury cruiser. It makes a Hyundai Elantra twice as wide and nearly three times as long, and it's made entirely out of environmentally-friendly plywood and less-environmentally-friendly spraypaint from the tractor supply store. It also makes the vehicle authentically slow, which you'll find adds to the pleasure of pretending you're the talentless scion of a small town used car dealership. Hey, maybe they sell high-mileage Grand Marquises there.

Going on a Voyage
Growing up in Germany my parents and I would spend two weeks every summer going to the Chiemsee to sail. We stayed at Gästehaus Grünäugel in Gstadt (no that's not the resort in Switzerland). I learned how to sail from my Dad who was self-taught. Thanks, Dad!
It was a ton of fun to be out on the water and I also built a deep association between sailing and vacation. What a great way to take one's mind off things! I wound up not sailing during college and for quite a few years after that. But then on a family vacation in the BVI I took a Hobie Cat off the beach and was immediately hooked again.
Susan and I were living in Scarsdale at the time, which is only 20 minutes from Larchmont and the Long Island Sound. We also discovered that friends of ours belonged to the Larchmont Yacht Club. We took the plunge and bought a J100 (admittedly a J100 was the only boat we test sailed and I may or may not have loved it so much that I charged ahead and bought one).
Tumblr media
We have spent many wonderful moments on Galatrona since. Sailing on the Sound with Manhattan in the background is delightful. We have also brought her out to Montauk a few times, where there is always wind. With every year of sailing I also remembered how as a child I had devoured the Horatio Hornblower series of books. The adventure of being at sea and braving storms seemed ever so exciting. I started following various ocean races online (the New York Vendée is on right now). And out of all this came an idea: what about an Atlantic crossing?
For a while this seemed like a bucket list item that I would probably postpone forever. But then one day our son Peter brought up that he would love to do this together with me. We mentioned it to my friend HL, who has been my sailing mentor for many years. And then all of a sudden a plan came together. We would buy a boat, race Newport Bermuda and then go on from there across the Atlantic. And that's exactly what we are now doing.
A few words about the boat. Frolic is a J44. It is hull #4, built in 1989. Pretty much everything else on the boat has been rebuilt over the last year starting with a brand new mast. J44s are cruiser-racers that perform extremely well under a wide range of conditions from light to heavy air. We have been trialing the boat by participating in a couple of early season races, including the EDLU and Block Island.
Tumblr media
Now the big voyage is coming up! We are starting with the Newport Bermuda race on June 21st. This will be a shakedown for the boat and maybe as importantly for the crew, in particular for Peter and me. While we done a lot of sailing, it has all been in the Long Island Sound and near Montauk. So there is some chance that once we get to Bermuda we will simply not want to carry on.
For right now though, I couldn't be more excited to be going on voyage. You can follow our adventure on Twitter, Instagram and our blog. Let me know what you want to hear about and I will try to post on that.

We're currently going through initial designs for Isolabella and feeling a little overwhelmed. One of the biggest tasks in building (or buying) a boat is determining her mission profile. Where will she sail? What conditions will she need to not just endure, but handle without danger to her integrity while keeping the crew safe and comfortable.
Production Dock Queens and Coastal Cruisers are cheap and plentiful. Many of those are capable of handing transatlantic crossings between the Caribbean and the Med with the right weather window, and are also easy to find. When your itinerary includes stops outside the mid-latitude circumnavigation routes, you need something much more robust. Hull design, rig, keel, tankage, redundancy, gear, etc all become critical choices that could mean the difference between surviving what Mother Nature will eventually throw at you and being another cautionary tale to would be sailors.
The new Isolabella will have to satisfy multiple vastly different missions; safely crossing notoriously rough seas (the roaring 40's, the Northwest Passage, Iceland, Svalbard) and spending leisurely weeks and months anchored in sunny locales with the occasional spilled drink her only real hardship.
The Laird's 56' Pelagic inspired expedition boat is built for spending its life in those fringe locations laughing at the worst conditions she could ever face. The naval architect we've been working with is drawing his inspiration from this genre of vessel. I like it but we're going to need a little more form with our function. She has to sail well and safely but she also has to be a home.

Further along the dock was author Leslie Thomas with his wife Diane, no doubt contemplating future plot of his own.
Strolling along the boardwalk came an unusually domestic-looking Roger Taylor, drummer from Queen, with his girlfriend Debbie Leng and five-month-old son Rufus Tiger. "We've just bought our boat Adamus up from Cornwall," he told me.
Later, I spotted the happy trio buying a replica of their police-launch-like cruiser in an antique shop. "One for the bath, perhaps!" he jested.

2023 Bahama Cruise, Part 13, March 30 Long Island.
.
Tumblr media
Nancy makes a fine “Figurehead” for our sailboat. Good thing the autopilot doesn’t get distracted with her on the bow, like I do.
Before I forget it, must say I am just in awe of the early sailors who navigated these islands before GPS exact positioning. When out of sight of land this looks all the same. When sailing, sometimes you can go in a straight line making navigation easier. Even then over a longer passage, the boat speed changes all the time. When you are tacking back and forth into a wind and the speed is constantly changing, no way to guess your position, course or destination.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There were several Bahamian fishermen baseing out of Water Cay. Some had bigger boats and anchored off of the island. Those are the motherships and tow several powerboats for the guys to cover more territory during the day. One guy decked over the front of a small skiff and made a cuddy cabin. He has a homemade grill on shore. Plus he sets up a generator on shore to keep some large freezers cold. He may stay out here a week or two before he goes to town. These guys work all day every day, no matter what the wind is doing. Tough people.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Chef on board uses what ever is available to whip up something new and exciting for every meal. Our first night at Long Island, Nancy pan seared lobster and fresh fish that “Cheval” had given us. No green flash in this anchorage but we still get a fantastic sun set. The Chef sounds the Conch horn as the sun settles into the west.
Just as we were anchoring several boats were commenting on the mosquito issue. Oops, turn around and get a little further in the bay for the night. We can always move closer for the protection from the up coming winds. Good holding in silty sand.
Tumblr media
We woke up to the sounds of Roosters crowing on shore. That makes Nancys day. No mosquitoes, but we closed the boat early and went to bed, so we never gave them a chance to invade. In the morning when Nancy went up to do her yoga on the bow. We had been swarmed by termites during the night. Apparently they are attracted to our lights on deck. Only about 20 boats all spread out in the anchorage, so maybe I will turn off some lights tonight. After morning chores of cleaning the cabin, checking the engine, cleaning the bilge and topping off the Starting Battery. Nathalie swings by on her paddleboard. She and Nancy paddle to shore. Nancy carries a VHF handheld and can call for help if needed.
In the afternoon we made a quick run to Long Island Petroleum dock. They sell gas to cars out front, or gas /diesel to boats pulling up to the dock. Super nice sisters born on the island. After buying 4 gallons of diesel at $6.12 a gallon we dinghied back to the boat. While making water for an hour. Nancy could hear water running in the bilge. I can’t hear things well anymore. After poking around we realized the brine overflow line had come lose from the water maker. Super briney water had been poring all over the water maker. Turned it off and poured a gallon of fresh water over the whole thing. I will work on it tomorrow.
Tumblr media
A weak cold front is moving south to hit us tonight. Should stall over the Bahamas later. No rain just nice blowing wind.
Tumblr media
We are anchored in Thompson Bay north of Salt Pond.
Tumblr media
Nathalie, Nancy and I went in to Basil’s dock. This gentleman allows the cruisers to tie their dinghies to his dock and walk into town. Unfortunately, several cruisers don’t know the simple rules at his dock. The water is not for cruisers, it cost him money. Please don’t lock your dinghy to the one ladder blocking it. The Blue Barrel that says “No Boater trash” is not for boaters trash.
We checked out the grocery store and had a long talk with the owner, Mr. William Miller. Then we walked to St. Joseph’s Church. There were some huge Lignumvitae trees in the church yard. This island has many growing in the wild.
Tumblr media
The large tree on the left is a lignumvitae tree. Lignum Vitae, means “tree of life” and is the national tree of the Bahamas. Some interesting facts about the wood. It is one of the heavier woods in the world and sinks in water. It is very oily and has been used for centuries in ships. The first three chronometers on ships used bearings and gears made of this wood due to the oil factor. Later, propeller shaft bearings were made out of it. Including the shaft bearing of the WWII submarine USS Pampanito. To bring the history of ships and Lignum Vitae full circle, the first nuclear powered sub, USS Nautilus, had an aft main shaft bearing composed of this wood.
Tumblr media
This is Dorald Harding’s grave, born in 1910. He is literally buried between a rock and a hard place. Notice the spelling of his first name. Another unique spelling on a grave was, “Elthie Harding” 1919-1992.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Love the yard art of an old stern from a Bahama racing sloop “Beerly Legal”. Next door was a functional class C racer, “Beerly Legal”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Basil’s dinghy dock, with instructions painted at the top of the ladder.
Tumblr media
Here I am shredding a coconut by hand on the aft deck. Nancy made a wonderful Flan with shredded coconut in it for the nights dinner party aboard “Time Out”.

Things to consider when you purchase a boat
When purchasing a boat, it’s important to consider a variety of factors to ensure that the boat fits your needs, budget, and lifestyle. Whether you're a first-time buyer or upgrading, here’s a detailed list of key considerations:
1. Purpose and Type of Boat
Think about how you plan to use the boat:
Fishing: Choose boats with ample space, rod holders, and live wells, such as center consoles or bass boats.
Cruising and leisure: For leisurely outings or entertaining, consider pontoon boats or cabin cruisers.
Watersports: Ski boats, wakeboard boats, or bowriders are ideal for towing activities.
Sailing: If you’re interested in sailing, determine whether you want a day sailer, cruising sailboat, or racing sailboat.
Offshore or inshore boating: Offshore boats need to handle rougher seas, while inshore boats are more lightweight and maneuverable.
2. New vs. Used
New boats: Offer the latest technology, warranties, and customization options, but come with a higher price tag.
Used boats: More affordable upfront, but may require more maintenance and repairs. Make sure to conduct a thorough inspection or hire a surveyor for used boats.
3. Boat Size
Choosing the right size boat depends on several factors:
Number of passengers: Ensure the boat can comfortably accommodate the number of people you plan to bring along.
Storage and space: Consider the amount of deck space, storage compartments, and seating arrangements.
Docking and towing: Larger boats require more space for docking and a stronger towing vehicle if you plan to transport it. Also, larger boats may require different licensing and skills to operate.
4. Engine and Power
The engine is crucial for performance, fuel efficiency, and maintenance costs:
Outboard engines: These are easier to service and offer flexibility in power options. They are common in smaller to mid-sized boats.
Tumblr media
Inboard engines: Often found in larger boats, inboard engines are fixed inside the hull and require more complex maintenance.
Sail or manual power: For sailboats, consider if you want a motorized engine as a backup.
Also, think about the horsepower based on your boating activities. Watersports will require more powerful engines than leisurely cruising.
5. Budget and Financing
Beyond the purchase price, consider other ongoing costs:
Fuel consumption: Larger boats with more powerful engines consume more fuel.
Insurance: Research boat insurance options based on the boat's size, type, and location.
Storage: If you don’t have a place to store the boat, consider the costs of marina slips, dry storage, or boat lifts.
Maintenance and repairs: Boats require regular maintenance, including engine servicing, hull cleaning, and winterization if you live in a seasonal climate.
Financing: Explore financing options if you plan to take out a loan. Ensure monthly payments fit within your budget.
In summary, buying a boat requires careful planning and consideration of its intended use, size, budget, safety, and maintenance requirements. Taking the time to do your research and assess your needs will help you find the perfect boat for your lifestyle.

Shop from Anywhere: The Advantages of Buying Boats Online in Australia
Traditionally, buying a boat meant visiting dealerships and marinas, a time-consuming process limited by location. However, the rise of boats online has revolutionized the Australian boating market, offering a wave of benefits for both buyers and sellers.
Tumblr media
Convenience at Your Fingertips: Gone are the days of travelling to various dealerships. Online platforms allow you to browse a vast selection of the best fishing boats in Australia from the comfort of your home, office, or even while on holiday. Search filters help you narrow down options based on your budget, desired size, type (sailboats, cruisers, fishing boats, etc.), and features. This saves you significant time and effort compared to physically visiting dealerships with limited inventory.
Wider Selection and Competitive Prices: The online marketplace isn't confined by geographical borders. You can access boats from across Australia, giving you a much wider selection than any single dealership. This increased competition often leads to better deals, as sellers vie for your business. You can easily compare prices and features of similar boats from different vendors to ensure you're getting the best value for your money.
Detailed Information and Virtual Tours: Forget relying on salespeople's pitches. Online listings typically offer comprehensive descriptions, high-quality photographs, and even virtual tours that let you explore the boat in detail. Some platforms even provide access to maintenance records and ownership history, giving you a clearer picture of the boat's condition.
Transparency and Ease of Communication: Reputable online boat sales platforms prioritize transparency. They often have secure communication channels built-in, allowing you to directly contact sellers to ask questions, request additional information, or negotiate a price. This eliminates the pressure tactics sometimes encountered at dealerships.
By carefully considering these advantages and following safety precautions, buying a boat online in Australia can be a convenient, efficient, and cost-effective way to set sail on your next aquatic adventure.

A day in Cruiser's Life - Sunday 17th March 2013
"I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travels sake. The great affair is to move." Robert Louis Stevenson

Living on Hestia in a boat yard has been an experience. Besides the 5 minutes shower experience mentioned in my previous blog, we had some really unusual experiences. After the first few days we started realising that we were not the only ones living on a hauled out boat. There were people with different short and long term accommodation history on boats hauled out on a boat yard.
Some had lived like this for years, a French lady in her 60s who had lived with her dog on her hauled out boat for 3 years since her husband passed away, the young English man who lived in a hotel but arrived every morning to work on his boat (technically he did not live on the boat yard). The elderly French man, who reminded me of Santa Claus and looked a lot older than the 73 years he claimed to be. He had been living with his wife on a boat for last 26 years, there were other mysterious characters that we never saw during the day but come night time we would see the lights on these boats and the smell of food being cooked.
Some of these people were living illegally in Saint Maarten and hence we never saw them!
We heard about a monthly Cruisers Flea Market so after an early breakfast on a Saturday morning we headed off with excitement as we had seen some of the goodies being downloaded from the dinghies at the boat yard across the canal from our boat yard. Dinghies - this is the favourite form of transport for the cruising community!
When we walked across the bridge, it was amazing to see this community of sailors, some with sea beards and interesting sailor hats bartering for goods or just selling them. This included everything from sailing cook books, destination guides, sailing charts, dive weights, dive tanks, old clothes and sometimes new clothes, shackles, chains, radios, compass, old dinghies, fishing rods, fishing nets, mosquito nets with rust, flags of countries they had visited (you need to hoist this along with your boat registered countries flag when entering a port). There was also a lady selling her own book with autographed copies. One man's junk is another man's treasure and after all there is only so much place we have on a boat so if you have been living on it for long then you need to discard some stuff before you can add to it. There were sailors from almost every part of the western world.

At the Cruisers Flea Market in T.O.B.Y. (Time Out Boat Yard)
Besides this monthly market we also got informed that they communicated with each other over VHF every morning, discussed weather reports, missing items and items for sale or to be bought. This was also used to advertise the local restaurant/ pub specials for the day etc....
For me this was a sneak preview of a world that I did not know existed!
That night we had an Indian curry night and invited some of our neighbours along to our boat. An interesting evening ensued which included exchange of ideas, tips on resolving technical issues and experiences shared towards our planned trip. Mr. Santa Claus was there without Mrs. Claus and despite the language barriers we managed to communicate! He had lived in Delhi many years ago for 6 months and he was most disappointed that my authentic Indian meal did not include any paratha's! He was however impressed with our bridge deck.
He has lived on his boat for 26 years with Mrs. Claus on a near by island called St. Barth's. however 3 years ago their boat capsized in a cyclone and although there was no major damage to the boat, Mrs. Claus had injured her back seriously. She had to be taken to Paris for surgery that impacted 7 vertebrae and now even if they would like to live in an apartment he just does not have the funds. If he sold his boat it would not fetch him enough to buy a house/unit in Paris, besides since he owed some money to the French Government it is not an option.
The English man loved my daal! He had a Brazilian wife, who was back in London. He was a great company. He also helped us with his dinghy when we had to pick up ours and tow it back. Since the piece of junk given to us by VPM blew up when being refilled with air, we bought a cute 2nd hand yellow dinghy at a great price. Patrick hated the colour but I loved it! Besides it was working and in much better condition than what we had.
I never had a chance to meet the French lady but her dog was ferociously protective of her! Her boat was near the toilet and her dog freaked me out whilst going to the toilets in the middle of the night.
Patrick assisting with the setting up of Solar Panels
Overall through all the stress and anxiety of dealing with VPM and fixing the boat, we had a good time due to our wonderful floating family that supported us and helped us in all possible ways without a grudge about the pending delay and the hung situation. To them we are very grateful.
Thank you Phil, Sybille, George, Colin and Nick!

Sailing into Excellence: Fishing Boats with Cutting-Edge Design and Superior Performance
The aesthetics and design of boats have advanced significantly over time, and the best boat builders now provide excellent fishing boats with stunning views of the ocean for sale. The leaders in the boat business provide a very long warranty on the structural integrity of the hull, as it is the most crucial part of any boat. Fibreglass has been employed by several well-known manufacturers to make the best boats; some of these boats even provide remarkable value when sold.
Tumblr media
Better design equates to greater manoeuvrability and structural strength, regardless of the kind of fishing boat for sale-a cruiser or a prowler. Centre console boats for sale can be purchased from leading brands as it is crucial for modern day boats. The best companies of today use computer-aided design (CAD) software to precisely design every boat they make, and quality testing is done on all of their goods prior to market release. Prominent boat builders also ensure that sturdy designs are matched with well-considered layouts and professional fit-outs. Boats come in a wide variety of styles, each with distinctive features such as a central console, cabby cabin hard top, all-arounder, hard top, family day, etc. The top companies include a number of noteworthy features in their fishing boats, such as entirely foam-filled hulls and glassed matrix systems that strengthen structural integrity and self-bailing decks that make the ride drier and, thus, easier to clean up after.
Let's Examine Some Current Developments in Boat Building:
Today's top businesses prefer completely glassed matrix systems and foam-filled hulls for increased stability and manoeuvrability. The angle created between the boat's bottom and horizontal plane is known as deadrise, and it is another crucial factor that top boat designers take into account.
When buying a fishing or recreational boat, one should take into account if the manufacturer offers a complete package that includes genuine body parts and excellent after-sale support.
Look through the leading boat manufacturers' catalogues and contact them with your specific needs for further details.

2023 Bahama Cruise, Part 14. April. 1. Thompson Bay, Grey’s Bight, Long Island.
Tumblr media
Dinner party on “Time Out”. Above left to right: Capt. of “Sea Breeze” Dana, Capt. David Houston “Cheval”, Capt. and author, Paul Trammell “Water Rose”.
Tumblr media
Jim and Laurie hosted 6 of us on their Lagoon 45 F (F for Flybridge). Big and beautiful, it is perfect for dinner parties. Plus the upper helm has great visibility for docking. “Cheval” provided fresh hogfish, which Jim cooked in a Thai soup. Nancy provided a coconut flan for desert. Rounding out a three course meal.
Jim and Laurie have traveled from the Mediterranean to Grenada and up the Carribean. Now that they are in the Bahamas, they say this is the friendliest group of cruisers they have met. Jim said in the short time they have been here, the cruiser interaction is a thousand times friendlier than in the Carribean.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Farmers Market opens up Saturday morning early. There are 30 boats in the harbor due to the winds predicted earlier. So it was a scramble in the morning for fresh vegetables. I picked up a large piece of coconut bread for $3 Bahamian. Since they were selling local salt in small zip lock bags. I had to buy one for $2.50 Bahamian. The gentleman standing in the photo, explained how he gets the salt in the summer dry season. They bagged up 20 “fish sacks” full this last summer.
The woman in the top photo was shelling peas. She beats most of the peas out in advance. Here she is doing a final look through. Talks and shells at the same time. As she shells, she gathers up a handful of empty shells in her right hand and allows the field peas to fall to the bottom of the box. Once she gets a handful of empty husk in her hand she drops them in a cardboard box next to her. That is fed to the sheep.
This island was a large sheep herding island. We just missed the annual “mutton festival”.
Tumblr media
We went walk about and talked to Marcie (Knowles) Fox in her parents yard about plants. They just recently were tied into the potable water system. Most houses here have a cistern. Nancy found a beautiful Sea Horse made out of sea glass.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We stopped briefly at a natural salt pond. It really reeked. Hope the salt I bought did not come from here! This island must be full of snakes. One Grey Racer was dead on the road the day before. Here we found a dead Bahama Boa. Once we got to the beach, we walked a mile down and back.
When ever my ship starts to go down, forget the EPRIP or calling MAYDAY. I am sticking close to Nancy. If she washes up on a deserted Island, she will find someone to talk to. Hopefully, they will have the means to get us back.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you look closely at the foot prints above, the left has tread marks. The right footprint is smooth and no tread marks. Nancy talked to John on the beach. No one ever walks this beach, but Nancy found the one guy. He is an ex-pat, and was wearing a pair of “North Island Shoes”. Two different colored and aged crocks. In the North part of Long Island, if you find it washed up on the beach you wear it!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We found some wild Passion Fruit on the side of the trail. Nancy gathered up a handful of fruit. When we stopped back at the Farmers Market, she asked a local woman about them. Nancy was promising to make me some Passion Fruit creme brulee. The woman explained these were not edible and would poison me. Then she promptly threw all of them in the bushes. She saved my life!
Tumblr media
A quick trip below ground for Nancy. I thought I had my flashlight, but it was still on the boat. So we could not go very far. There are bats further in the cave. Once back at the boat we pulled anchor. Well, actually Nancy pulled up the 45 lb. anchor while I drove. Then we headed south 4 miles. To a large Blue Hole and a secluded anchorage.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Approximately 500 ft. across at its widest. It is only 38 ft. deep but you can not see the bottom. I took the opportunity to snorkel around the edge. On the north drop off several Mangrove Snapper came up to look at me. Their were several larger Mutton Snapper along the edge. They were very skidish.
Tumblr media
We were back at the boat and Nancy was taking her shower on the aft sugar scoop. Jumping in and getting wet. Getting out and lathering up. Jumping in to rinse off. I happened to be on deck taking some clothes out to hang up. Damn, there was a large shark parallel to the boat and moving away. “Nancy, get in the boat!”.
Why?
Don’t ask why, just get in the boat!
Is it a shark?
Yes, there is a large shark swimming by.
No worries, it is not interested in me.
Nancy, this is not a Nurse, Hammerhead or bull shark. It might be a Tiger Shark!
OKAY! OKAY!
Nancy is obviously fearless!
Tumblr media
Plan for the morning was: Make water, go to the Blue Hole, go swim with the red shrimp, then walk to a secluded beach we found on Goggle Earth.
Water maker would not pressurize and we spent 2 hours troubleshooting it. Then gave up. Skipped the Blue Hole, and dinghied to the boat ramp. Walked a short distance to the church ruins which is where the trail to the Red Shrimp Cave starts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is the ruins of St. Mary the Virgin Anglican Church. Only one family of 4 was buried in the yard.
Tumblr media
Talking to a native of the island, the graves are facing East. Again, interesting spelling of the name, “Lerlene Moree” 1918- 1958. Notice that either one or two children's graves sit to the side. Times were tough back in the day. In those day midwives delivered the babies on the island. Now when a women is 6 months pregnant she has to leave the island.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Following the well marked trail from behind the church to the cave full of red shrimp. We spent 20 minutes swimming with the shrimp. It appears to be salt water. Hundreds of red shrimp and a crab or two. A few of the shrimp came off of the bottom and swim upside down near the surface.

Red shrimp at bottom of the photo swimming around. They were thick on the bottom.
Tumblr media
After the shrimp swim, we tried to get to this secluded beach on the East side of the Island. Unfortunately there was a gate on the road.
When you walk on the road here in Long Island every single car that passes waves and or beeps their horn. Not much traffic, but always happy people.
Out here in the middle of nowhere is a small bar with a pool table, called FOXIES. Sign said “3 beers for $10, Karaoke Saturday night”. No cars the first time we walked by. But Sunday on the way back we watched a guy stop and go in. We stopped in and asked if he was open. He said sure. We ordered 3 Kaliks, and paid the 10 dollars. He gave us the fourth beer free so we would be even on the amount of drinks. Cheapest beers we ever had in the Bahamas. Foxie will be a millionaire shortly. He was off to George Town to open another bar and Vape store. That will be his fourth Vape store in the islands. Bahamas are looking at legislation to legalize marijuana and CBD. He is setting himself up on each island chain to sell the stuff.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Low tide so we stopped and walked the beach on the way back. We had spotted a Tamarind tree but we only able to pick a handful of fruit. Rain storm was creeping towards our boat so we headed back.

April 16 - Fun day in Solomons. Well, mostly fun. Got the little bit of laundry that we had washed and dried (free machines!!). I didn’t NEED to do laundry, but our travels over the years has taught us that if something is available, even if you don’t need it, do it (or buy it) anyway. One never knows what is available at the next stop.
David and I risked life and limb to ride the marina’s bikes the 2 miles to the grocery store. I will admit that the bikes were in better shape than they were in October. My bike was a bit small for me, but all other bikes were way too high. The bikes’ tires were inflated, the brakes worked (pumper bikes) and the wheels did not wobble. David did have to tweak my handle bars so that they were centered on the frame and not skewed to the left. A bonus on the bikes—the rubber handle grips were not gummy!!
After lunch we took a walk into town. So scenic!

There are plenty of life rings hanging alongside this dock.
Tonight we had dinner with Cindy and Dean, a couple we met in the dock when we were in Hampton. Delicious food. Interesting couple. Fun time. Cindy and Dean have been living on their boat full time for the past 3 years. They sold their home in Little Rock, bought a sailboat, and have been full-time cruisers since then. Don’t know if I’d be able to live on a boat full-time. Many people do, but I don’t think it is for me.
Tomorrow morning we will leave Solomons and head for St Michaels. It’s been a few years since we’ve stopped in St Michaels. St Michaels is another cute little town to fall in love with. St Michaels has a maritime museum which we have visited. The main street is full of shops and restaurants. The one negative thing about St Michaels—there are brown snakes in the water! Not kidding.
Another adventure awaits us tomorrrow!
