Corona Diaries
2/14 - Fly to Arizona for Grand Canyon and Arielle Bach Party. People in airport are wearing masks. I make a comment to my mom about it, not understanding why people are wearing masks or wondering if they are sick.
3/2 - Patient Zero tests positive for COVID19 in New Rochelle.
3/8 - Our Boss at Schoology tells us we can work from home if we feel more comfortable. We think she’s just being lazy and wants to work from home herself.
3/6 - Comedy show in NYC. Kristin doesn’t feel well and we worry she should stay home incase she has COVID19. We go to the comedy show. The comedian makes jokes about COVID19, we laugh.
3/8 - Eric’s School closes School for the following week. I make a comment to him that that’s overkill and a “private school privilege”. All other schools will eventually close of course.
3/11 - Mom flies to Madrid.
3/12 - National Pandemic Announced & Trump Announces Travel Ban between US/Europe. Cuomo declares State of Emergency in New York.
3/13 - Mom flies home from Madrid to NY after Mara books back up flight for Mom from Madrid to London. Mom spent $1400 to spend not even a full day in Madrid, goes back to the airport with thousands of panicked Americans, gets off stand by and comes home. Mara comes over to greet mom and give her some food, flowers, and company.
3/14 - Mara works remotely indefinitely, office shuts down until at least April 7th. Mara and Eric do the NYT crossword, hike the Masters trails with Winnie, and Mara and Eric go to Japanese Restaurant with Susan, Jeff, and Matt. Restaurants will soon close. Earlier in the day Mara goes to Larchmont to check in on mom, goes for a walk with mom and Winnie, and meets up with Kristin, Kevin, and Zoey at Central School.
3/15 - Mara goes to Larchmont and goes to Manor park with Shanni, Maddy, Liana, and Nicole and Nicole’s dog Remy.
3/16 - Mara works from home. Luckily Peloton bike was delivered last week just before the store closures began. At this point all Spin Studios and Gyms shut down. Mara and Eric cook butternut squash risotto and parmesan asparagus. De Blasio announces that NYC Public Schools are closed. Meals will be served at food centers.
3/17 - Eric and Mara are watching Sex Education. Mara Eric and Susan go on trail hike with Winnie.
3/18 - Mara Hallie Eric Winnie trail walk with Winnie. Mara Zoom date with high school friends.
3/19 - Zoom date with MK, Jana, Jason.
3/20 - Mom comes over for trail walk with Winnie and we cook the Shrimp Pasta dish with brussel sprouts.
3/21 - Peloton bike, talked to Elise on the phone, walked to tennis courts to play tennis with Eric’s family. The Masters courts are shut down due to Corona. Dinner at Eric’s family’s house. We sat at the dining room table to spread out. Mara played Ping Pong with Matt.
3/22 - Mara ran 3 miles, used Peloton, went to Larchmont to work on Obama NYT puzzle with mom.
3/23 - Monday, Peloton, worked from home, played SET with Eric, cooked a big salad.
3/24 - Run, work, tennis with Jodi, visited mom, Video session with Aubrey, Elise, Kelly
3/25 - Peloton, work from home, went on walk to store, no one was there and everyone in masks. Order in sushi. Video date with MHS friends. We started a CS team fitness challenge today since no one is moving since only home!
3/26 - Didn’t sleep because reading too much news and it’s so sad. US now has more cases than any other country (82k), NY has 37k cases, and the news is really grim. Had my virtual performance review and got a 3% raise, went on a 7 mile run but tripped on a rock and got hurt, played tennis with Jodi, then went to my mom’s and cooked dinner. I feel scared every time I go to my mom’s house in fear that I’m bringing the virus into her home. A lot of my mom’s coworkers have tested positive for COVID-19. Deccico’s is doing a great job with their grocery store (limiting number of people in store, making people wait outside 6 feet apart, mandated gloves, sanitizing shopping carts, glass wall at check out. Stop and shop is not doing much and so people haven’t been going. Trader Joes NYC closed because too many employees tested positive. Everyone is panicked and at this point it is hard to imagine life going back to normal. Even if legally it goes back to normal, everyone is absolutely terrified of other humans. Everything about this is unprecedented and unimaginable. Trump is a moron. It hurts to think about how much better handled this might have been with Obama. The 2020 Presidential Election is essentially at a standstill, no one going to primary elections, very curious what will happen, will we even be able to vote in November? Bernie and Biden left, Biden in the lead, but Biden is hardly speaking up about Covid-19. It’s been fulfilling to work at Schoology during this time as we are making a real difference in virtual learning and our school districts are eternally grateful. Side note––Amazon is hardly even running! They’ve cut down on their hours and employees, and the average wait on PRIME is 30 days!!! I am going to sleep at my mom’s tonight.
3/27 - Ended up sleeping at my mom’s on Thursday night. Took a work meeting from my mom’s then went back home. First dropped off my right AirPod at a FedEx drop off but you had to touch the box. Tried to do a Peloton class at home but Winnie got into my medicine bag and we found her with an empty laxative and ambien pill container. We took her to emergency vet and had them induce vomiting. We were terrified we killed her. Turns out she didn’t eat any pills and we ended up finding all of the pills when we got back from vet. Poor Winnie. Silly $300 at vet. Pet insurance is dumb because it has such a high deductible. I then went on a walk with Winnie because it was 64 degrees out. Eric and I cooked a fancy meatloaf for dinner and finished Sex Education. I made a lovely cocktail.
3/28 - Weekends don’t feel all that different from weekdays. Trump is discussing a mandatory quarantine on all New York residents since there are now 45,000 confirmed cases (many more unconfirmed). Reading the news is scary and I have been trying to limit it at night because it gives me insomnia and anxiety. Most of my friends aren’t seeing their parents at all. It’s gross out today. I did a few Peloton classes and started Little Fires Everywhere. It was a book turned into a movie but because movies are closed they released it as a TV series on Hulu. Just stepped out of the house for the first time today to take Winnie on a short walk. My team at Schoology is doing a fitness challenge to get some steps in because it’s HARD to find reasons to move! We were going to go to the Shear’s for dinner tonight but Susan had a headache this morning so to be safe we aren’t going. This is the crazy world we are currently living in. I’ve been mostly only wearing sports bras not real bras. We have not been able to locate lysol wipes in weeks. Note to self, I’d like to add some photos here because this really is all so unprecedented and it’s hard to put into words the craziness.
3/29 - Working out every day but gaining weight. Watched Little Fires Everywhere - LOVE it. Gross day out. Peloton inside. Zoom Call with Kristin, Oliver, Parker, Mom. Went on a walk around the apartment. Weekends are worse than week days because no work to do.
3/30 - Work is crazy because Schoology crashed since too many people on the platform. Did lots of Peloton Spin. Amanda moved her wedding to 2021. We are very worried about ours. I haven’t been sleeping. Went to visit mom with Winnie in afternoon for a walk. Passed neighbor Kelly but we couldn’t let her pet Winnie because not supposed to have other people pet your dog. We had a meeting with the Rabbi for our wedding. She is hopeful for July because she can’t stand the thought of not being able to send her kids to sleep-away camp haha. Started this dumb show Tiger King, everyone is watching it. About a man who keeps tigers in his house.
3/31 - Schoology crashed again. Too many users. Work has been busy but fulfilling though because we are so important right now, been nice to connect with my clients. It’s been hard working full days though I take breaks to work out and to do chores so I’m a bit all over the place. Went to the post office today to return a dress for my mom because I won’t let her go, all stood 6 feet apart and I feel scared to breathe in public now. It’s so bad in NY and the Daily Podcast is scaring me.
4/1 - Work has been stressful because of the Schoology outages because everyone is doing school on Schoology now. Went to Deccico’s at lunch to do a big grocery shopping (we are trying to limit grocery store to once max twice per week since it’s unsafe to go). I wore a t-shirt as a bandana to cover my mouth, tried to keep sunglasses on, and wore a glove on my right hand (left hand was for my phone to see the shopping list). The line was wrapped around the entire corner and I ended up waiting 45 minutes. You have to be really careful to stand at least 6 feet behind the person in front of you. It was a bit overwhelming because we had such a long shopping list (also doing groceries for my mom), and they were out of a lot. I couldn’t find bread, orange juice, turkey, etc. Also have not seen lysol wipes in weeks. Unfortunately. I ended up being gone for an hour and a half and couldn’t even finish the shopping. Went to Stop & Shop after to finish the list. No one is going to Stop & Shop because they aren’t doing as good of a job with cleanliness protocol so it’s far less crowded. Under isolation I am 1) becoming a chef with Eric, we are cooking so much! 2) working out a lot and incorporating more floor workouts and strength training 3) drinking almost daily… 4) eating A LOT!!!!! Getting fit + gaining weight at the same time. Today was Greg Lesser’s birthday, so we had socially distant drinks on our lawn, I have a funny picture of all of us sitting that I’ll post above. During the happy hour, Caitlin Casey wanted to use our bathroom so she stepped inside, we deliberated if it was okay. I was too close to the door when she opened it and she alarmingly stepped back, no one gets that close anymore. Winnie turned 9 months today. A few other notes: our Election Primary has been moved to end of June. I will have to likely cancel my bachelorette party. Schoology already closed our office through April 30, with optional WFH through May 31st. I interviewed Hong Kong American School tonight, as they’ve been remote for months. They almost went back to school but when folks came back to China they brought COVID19 with them so now they are back to isolation.
4/6 - We decided to stop going over to Eric’s family’s house because it’s making us anxious and there are four of them and Eric’s mom is still going to the hospital. I got an actual mask and have started wearing it to the store and I feel a lot more safe. It was a beautiful day today, 62 and sunny. I went to my mom’s house and worked from her patio. Then I went on a distanced walk with Winnie and Shanni and then Winnie and Caroline. I’m getting used to working fully remote, I can’t even imagine commuting in at this point.
4/7 - Here are a few things I’m grateful for during this time. Eric, a supportive and loving partner. We get along so well and find a great balance between hanging out together and being independent, so we haven’t been sick of each other at all. Our spacious apartment and easy access to green space and outdoors and running paths. Winnie, truly the love of our life, she is just a saint and we can’t imagine life without her. And the fact that we have a “home gym” ie Peloton, exercise mat, and weights. These four things make this experience far more manageable. And of course the fact that we are both still employed and that our families are still healthy.
4/11 - Went on a walk with friends in LeatherStocking Trail in Larchmont. Was a bit crowded and narrow which wasn’t good. We ran into a random boy from our high school who immediately picked up Winnie. (We aren’t letting people pet Winnie due to Corona but I didn’t act quick enough to stop it). Anyway, turns out his brother who he LIVES with has Corona. Which means he probably has it too. And he was out on a walk not social distancing and PET MY DOG!!! I was absolutely livid.
4/15 - Cuomo requires all people wear masks in public in NYC. Cuomo says likely that there will be no large gatherings through the summer. Very sad about the wedding. Colleges are making online learning plans for the fall just incase.
4/28 - Silver lining of quarantine: I get to hear Eric’s work, not just his teaching but his deanship how eloquently and professionally he handles parent conversations, managing faculty that’s older than he is, and student situations. He is currently leading a parent forum book discussion on the book White Fragility on race and whiteness

THE POST-DIGITAL PROTOTYPE
With a project (//brief) this open it was hard to decide where to begin, the post digital was such a colossal topic it was easy to get lost in SPRINT tunnels where you would start fifty micro projects only to abandon them all and be left with nought.
Having grown up with my nose in a book, specifically Sci-Fi epic’s and dystopian thrillers, this studio option was an easy pick. When given the brief, rather than a solid idea I had a feeling I wanted to encapsulate. A pseudo Orwellian future in which we are monitored constantly, not menacingly but very blatantly. 14 year old me would have been disappointed by the mediocralypse we are living through. Instead of a cold judge Dredd / Robocop patrolling the streets it is Siri watching us, reminding us to take an umbrella less we catch a cold.

When I got my new iPhone [TM(TM) TM] I turned off all the regular ad/ tracking settings only to find within a few weeks that without me having ever set anything, it knew where work was, when I was working and when I was coming back home. This was on by default, hidden in settings be-riddled with sudden jargon.
(the setting was frequent locations) INITIAL BRAINSTORMING:

With all the aforementioned in mind I chose to focus on “looking at screens works both ways.” For the first part of this task I initially wanted to create a book out of paper that would dissolve under certain conditions, or create a publication that reflected my sentiments that I would expand upon in this final segment. However as I continued my research on the “post digital,” I began to think about my own future as both a designer and individual. The design industry is simultaneously competitive and collaborative. I thought a lot about what kinds of clients I wanted to attract, sectors I wanted to work in and what set me apart as my own designer. There are enough/too many Frankie magazine designers already, regurgitating the same grid patterns and shallow works, printing the same idea month after month.

This is A Magazine, Compendium #3 “Chaos Happens.” Shown work by: Flutro-Creative Services Unit
It was from here that I realised that I personally couldn’t make another perfect bound print publication as my own interests didn’t align with this. To expand my practice I decided I needed to buckle down and do something I had little experience in. This is how I landed on coding. Whilst a daunting task I really do believe to evolve and stay ahead of the AI-designer-DoomBots who will inevitably replace us, it’s imperative we learn thy enemy. To bring something other than roast, peas and mash to the dinner table.

In the same way we swapped traditional waterfall methods in our ideation/prototyping phase I wanted to SPRINT my own portfolio and make use of the opportunity to work on a concept driven design as opposed to a finished work. Whilst AI can mimic human semantics and create pretty websites it is yet to learn to think of it’s OWN ideas and it is this that is perhaps our best asset as flesh and bone. On the same tangent, I wanted to explore the popularity of computer companionship. With the Mac OSX Sierra update, ‘Siri’ also lives in your desktop. Amazon released ‘Alexa’ and Google retaliated with ‘Google Home.’ All bots designed to assist your livelihood by taking over rudimentary tasks such as adding items to cart, checking the weather or playing music. The real appeal in these bots is not their ability to tell you what time it is in Denmark but their capability for relatively smooth, realistic conversation. How is it in a world more connected than ever, we feel isolated enough to require a live at home robot companion?
youtube
Like a housewife from the 50′s, only Alexa can’t stick her head in the oven!
It was from here that I began looking into the feeling of loneliness in the post digital scape. Looking through my phone I found screenshots I had taken from a twitch stream of two google home bots set up such that they could converse with each other (side note: the rise of streaming culture/ Instagram live is an interesting foray into how we consume media and how rapidly it’s changing!! Saving it for another post!!) .
V: “what date” E: “the date you’re going to take me on.” V: “I don’t know we’ll have to see” Too real google, too real :----(
“If you don’t want to talk about Harry Potter I’m leaving”
Which reminded me of my own experiences chatting with bots. Cleverbot was super popular while I was in primary school as were portable offline versions of this with devices like 20Q. Our romanticism of talking to an algorithm is evidently nothing new. As AI ultimately reflects our own speech, is wanting to imbue human qualities in a string of data the ultimate form of narcissism? Or is it our collective cry for help, to save us from our own loneliness. This theory culminated when I read through/devoured The Age of Earthquakes: A Guide to the Extreme Present by Shumon Basar and co. (thx for lettin’ me borrow it Andy).

Growing up with video games it wasn’t until recently I’d noticed how isolated games that weren’t MMO or server based made me feel. Disconnected almost. Even open world games like the Witcher never truly asked:
Thus they never responded to my most current emotional needs. It was from there that I decided I wanted to create my own solution to this. I started with idea of collecting meta-data to fill in variables in a block of text. After strenuous research I realised with the time available and my lack of prior experience the code required to string this together was far too complex. From there I dug into machine learning some more, finally discovering Amazon Web Services (AWS). AWS is a corporate orientated tech service which provides servers and API’s to aid in a vast range of analytic type applications. It was pay-per-use however as I was not sending it 10,000 hits at once it was a couple of cents per request. Unfortunately the AWS Rekognition software (which is infinitely cool, able to recognise objects, faces, expressions, age, gender and gestures with a certain amount of certainty) was region locked to North America and very buggy through my VPN :--(

I did get it to work a few times. Ultimately this was weeks of learning python and wrangling with Terminal down the drain. Deflated I wasted a few too many nights out/at bars trying not to think about my impending failure for this assignment. It was from there that I found Microsoft Azure, a similar service to AWS it provided the same recognition and the added promise of analysing “emotion.” Again I put in my credit card details only to find that the API was locked to North American servers and also too complex to incorporate for my own uses. In my growing list of abandoned ideas, I’d hoped to incorporate the raspberry pi into my project mostly because I really wanted to play with it. I loved the appeal of it’s blank canvas nature and the anarchy within creating your own systems as opposed to simply absorbing what is fed to you. At this point I’m losing a lot of sleep over /getting it done./ I’d watched hour upon hour of Java and then Python tutorial hoping to build this damn application. I then came upon openFrameworks (OF). Similar to Processing, OF is an arts-engineering toolkit, like well fertilised soil is to plants oF makes the coding process easier. However it is still just a nursing ground and to plant and grow your project you still need a firm grasp on the basics and semantics of C++. It was at this point I discovered http://www.facetracker.net, an Open CV2 library for ~ tracking dat face ~ Developed by Jason Saragih, it was wrapped for openFrameworks by Kyle McDonald. Most of the resources used in this project ended up being Frankenstein-ed together as I found most online tutorials were either lacking or 7 years old. Equipped with a source code I was still inept at writing a code to utilise this library. This project was like trying to solve a puzzle where all the pieces are made of bubbles and the instructions are in Russian. Luckily for me I love puzzles. I went on self loathing wiki-hole after wiki-hole trying to find help. I had all the parts I just didn’t know how to make them work together.
* note time stamps * Luckily openFrameworks came with a small library of tutorials which sent me in a better direction. It was 4 am and I was getting delusional when I finally stumbled upon a template Dan Wilcox had developed around FaceTracker for students at Carnegie Mellon Universities School of Art Faculty ( In Pittsburgh USA). This became the skeleton which I broke and rebuilt and furthered to build my own monster.
I changed the colours on my compiler (Xcode) so I felt more like hackerman B--) From there I did far more math than to my liking to integrate my facial structure into the algorithms:
If I had been more apt at coding I would have liked to have actual face recognition as opposed to tracking. Baby steps, perhaps for my next project. I started with the idea of the book changing large volumes of text depending on expressions, however it was too difficult to maintain one expression for any extraneous period of time. Coming back to my initial research ( with content driven on current emotional needs) I decided to use poetry. For each relevant emotion I assigned a poem/snippet which I both cherish and relate to a feeling.
The emotions and poems I ended up with are as follows: Happy: -> smiling Yes Yes, Charles Bukowski Angry: -> brows furrowed and eyes squinted Snippet of The Divine Comedy - Inferno, Dante Alighieri Shocked: -> mouth open Alone with Everybody, Charles Bukowski Tired: -> close to the screen Rhapsody on a Windy Night, TS Eliot
Confused: -> Far from screen Jabberwocky, CS Lewis
As emotions are never singular, neither are the outputs. If you show signs of multiple emotions they will clash and play at the same time. The fluidity of the text on screen mirrors the unanchored nature of thoughts and feelings. I also initially did not have the little face on screen, however found it more charming/uncomfortable to see a visual reminder of your constant surveillance. Whilst un-menacing it is slightly disgruntling to know you are being watched. Some test screens (as in the opening GIF):
Now armed with a deliverable software, my next hurdle was submission. I wanted to incorporate a physical art element that grounds the project as something tangible whilst maintaining the romanticism in the playful app, i.e I didn’t want to have it simply downloaded from a boring dropbox or CD as the prototype relies on “ inspiring a hope for a future outcome. ” To physical represent both my Frankenstein-ed code (which has been passed down forward and tweaked by four generations of people to get to this!! In the spirit of open source I will also upload my version to GitHub) I deconstructed an old hard drive and replaced its casing with old mobile phones. Another technology rapidly evolving and leaving behind carcasses. Building new through old, forging future with the bones of the past. It also includes a charger noose to remind viewers of the potential perils of living entirely online. This is countered by cute stickers and a smiley face to also remind viewers that things moving forwards doesn’t have to be scary.

In conclusion this Studio was like an incredible buffet in which I took way too much food but enjoyed all of it none the less. The book club meetings were incredibly rewarding and a pleasant change of pace from other classes. I’ve learnt so so much from class discussions and just being surrounded by super super suppppperrrr work. These are all concepts/skills/thought processes I’ll carry forward into future works both in academia and beyond. Honestly though my favourite part has just been absorbing other peoples works. Through and through my favourite class ( and the only class I’d come to uni at 9 am for.) 💖🌸💕💗 Thank u everybody for an incredible semester!

You’ll never shop alone again
Evan Selinger, CS Monitor, March 13, 2017
Ever feel like someone--or something--is watching you when you’re shopping? You’re probably right.
Increasingly, brick and mortar stores are tracking customers with apps and biometric technologies. They are logging information about purchases and building databases about consumer buying habits. And customers are typically clueless that they are being surveilled.
On the web, online stores are increasingly savvy about how to tailor ads for consumers based on preferences, webiste histories, and personal information. Much of this retail analysis is happening with a black box, closed not only to individuals but also federal regulators.
I recently spoke with Joseph Turow, Robert Lewis Shayon Professor of Communication at the Annenberg School for Communication, about his new book, “The aisles have eyes: How retailers track your shopping, strip your privacy, and define your power.”
Edited excerpts follow.
Selinger: How are companies tracking us?
Turow: Most people know they’re creating a digital trail by using search engines, social media, and shopping online. But that only scratches of the surface of how companies can track us from morning to night.
Statistical analysis can link your different devices--what you do on your mobile phone, your tablet, and your computer--and that data can be integrated into customer dossiers. Companies also can use GPS technology to follow you outside and send you text messages containing coupons when you’re close to the stores they want you to shop in. And then, when you enter a store, companies can use their apps to follow you around. This way, they can send you customized messages about products and prices that are tailored to who you are and who they think you should be.
Selinger: Now that retailers and marketers have easy access to personal data that goes beyond age and income and includes information about behavior, lifestyle, and personality, what can they predict?
Turow: They mainly try to predict what you’d like to purchase and what your sweet spots are. That is, how much you’re willing to pay for a good or service and how long you’re willing to wait before making the purchase. They use that knowledge to incentivize you to buy their stuff instead of getting it from competitors.
Selinger: How does body language fit into the equation?
Turow: There’s a company in Russia that uses facial recognition technology to infer when people smile at the checkout. They use the information to select effective strategies for talking with customers and assessing whether customers had good shopping experiences. Other companies use body-recognition technology to infer a customer’s gender and age. Down the line, bodily analysis will become more pervasive and smarter.
Selinger: How much personal privacy can people protect simply by refusing to download store apps?
Turow: It’s complicated. People can ensure retailers don’t see them by not using frequent shopper cards, shutting their Wi-Fi off when they enter a store, shutting their Bluetooth off, and making sure all their apps are closed--not just sleeping. But going off the grid this way is difficult. For one thing, not using frequent shopper cards and apps often means paying a fair amount more. Also, people want to use a store’s Wi-Fi to compare prices with Amazon or other sites or apps. So going off the grid has real costs.
Selinger: Let’s end on an optimistic note. Right now, what can savvy consumers do to reclaim their power?
Joseph: Consumers can regain some leverage in different ways. Consider a simple implicit bargaining strategy that’s becoming popular. When you’re shopping online put the items you want to buy in the digital shopping cart, leave them there, and wait. If you wait long enough, a company might urge you to move things along by offering a discount on these goods.
At brick and mortar stores, your best bet is to compare the prices offered there to the ones available online. If they’re cheaper online, see if you can get someone from sales, or maybe just a cashier, to match the online price.

How to Create a Multi Vendor Marketplace for WordPress Using Dokan | Templified

How to Create a Multi Vendor Marketplace for WordPress Using Dokan
We’ve all seen a multi-vendor marketplace, right? Sites like Etsy or Envato are great examples of what a multi-vendor or multi-seller site is all about. What they do is allow a single website to let many people sell their products in one place. It’s like a mini-mall on the internet, but way cooler. The power of a community is a great marketing tool, so it really can be profitable for both the website and the individual sellers to use a multi vendor environment to sell products, services and subscriptions. In the past, there have been a lot of very expensive ways to get a multi vendor website set up, and they’ve been popular over the years, each one offering a slightly different take on what makes a great multi-vendor website. There’s CS Cart Multi-Vendor, which is very nice and has a lot of features, but it prices out at over $1400 for a license.
Yikes!
That’s simply too much for some small businesses and if you’re just getting started with creating a multi vendor marketplace, it can stop you even before you get started. Magento Marketplace is another good piece of software and it’s more reasonably priced that CS-Cart, but the Multi Vendor extension is still $350, plus all the basic Magento license fees, which can certainly add up and add up pretty quickly. That’s a lot of money and if you already know WordPress and would prefer to stick to a CMS you know, then there are only a few options. So, if you want to stick with WP, there’s IXXO, which offers a multi-vendor extension for WordPress but again, it’s $1500 for a license. Then along came Dokan, a WordPress multi-vendor theme solution that’s very reasonably priced.
Dokan costs $199 for one site. Of course, if you need to use Dokan on multiple sites, that’s possible too. For $299, you can install on up to five domains an for $499, it’s unlimited.
So how does all of this work, anyway?
Well, just like a normal multi vendor website, the process is the same.
A seller registers on your website.
The seller creates products.
They start selling.
You and the seller both make money.
It’s pretty simple. It’s like Ebay or Amazon, your sellers can create their own store and begin selling products immediately. Your marketplace will grow as your number of sellers increases too, since they’ll be doing their own promotion of their own personal store and you can really see an increase in traffic with all the fresh content they’ll be adding.
Dokan is based on WooCommerce, so it’s stable and has been adopted by a wide variety of businesses, from affiliate sales, app and software companies to online magazines. WooCommerce allows you to add on a multitude of extensions that will really come in handy for a multi-vendor business. If you’re selling digital downloads like WordPress themes, music, eBooks or other products, an affiliate program may be a great way to boost business and earn more money for your sellers and for yourself. WooCommerce has a powerful affiliate program available to help make that happen. What if your sellers need multiple payment gateways? WooCommerce has a wide range of payment types that can be easily implemented with a couple of extensions or add-ons.
WooCommerce is extensively documented and if you have experience with WordPress, then you’ve probably had some experience with WooCommerce as well, so you may already know how solid and stable it is and how simple it is to get started. Other features available include:
Dynamic pricing, discounts for bulk orders.
United States Postal Service shipping rates for both domestic and world-wide shipping. (FedEx and UPS too!)
Subscription sales for products with recurring payments.
Amazon payments
Product add-ons
Shipment tracking
And a whole bunch more great stuff. There’s a lot of flexibility in how much you can offer with WooCommerce, but even the vanilla version is powerful.
Okay, back to Dokan.
So what is Dokan anyway, a theme? Well, it’s actually a plugin, which is even better. With Dokan, you can turn any existing WooCommerce theme into a full featured multi vendor website. That means if you have a nice theme that you’ve already gotten familiar with, you can get started even quicker than you might have imagined. Say you want to build a community to help with marketing and keeping your sellers informed of important information, training or something else…use a BuddyPress ready theme to grow a community of buyers and sellers who all share a common interest. The point is, Dokan doesn’t limit you to one style or one set of features, there’s a massive variety of themes out there. If one of those themes is perfect for your site, assuming it also supports WooCommerce, then it can utilize the power of Dokan to help create an online multi vendor marketplace.
You do have the ability to use the Dokan theme that is included with the license and it’s a full featured WooCommerce theme, but I’m not going to get into that too much, because I think most people will enjoy the flexibility of being able to choose a theme that is exactly what they have in mind. For some, it may be the Dokan theme, but there are so many options to choose from, why limit yourself?
As I said, each seller creates their own store that they manage themselves. The seller has a dashboard that’s straightforward and easy to understand, allowing each vendor to manage inventory, pricing, discounts and promotions of their products. They’ll be able to track traffic stats, sales and they have a simple way to see the status of every order, from the time the buyer makes their purchase to the time it’s delivered. Reviews can be tracked too, a great way for sellers to see what they’re doing right, or wrong. Sellers can create coupons for sales and much more, so you won’t have to decide what to promote and what goes on sale, each seller can make their own discount choices and even special event sales for the holidays! This really is a feature filled admin panel for sellers.
How else can a seller customize the look of their individual storefront? Well, each seller has access to a special SEO panel, allowing them to set their own personalized SEO title, meta description, keywords, Facebook description and title, for when people share their content. Same goes for Twitter. Each product and page gets the same treatment, making it really easy for a seller to create a package of SEO goodness that will help drive business. And when a seller is able to drive traffic with such ease, everybody makes money.
So how do you make money?
Every time a seller sells a product, you take a small commission. That’s a huge benefit for sellers who may be just starting out, as they won’t have to pay a large fee per month to run their own store. For example, Shopify takes up to 3.5% per sale (plus 30 cents) and they charge $79 a month for the privilege of having a store in the first place. That’s pretty expensive and for a business just starting out and trying to grow sales, it can be a burden. With Dokan though, your site will charge a small percentage fee per transaction, one that you choose for yourself, and every sale will deduct that amount from the seller’s income and give it to you. It’s pretty slick and everybody will be happy in the end. (I should note, with the Subscriptions addon, you can choose to charge people a flat fee per month to use your platform to sell their products. The choice is yours.)
Okay, back to the store.
Each seller gets their own storefront, each one can be branded to their own tastes, within the parameters set up by the theme you choose of course. Each seller creates their own store settings, which makes it a powerful way for the sellers to differentiate themselves from the competition. Shipping management, social networking, pending orders…it’s all there, customized for each seller. Sellers will love the way this theme allows them to have a professional, online presence without having to spend a lot of money up front on a theme of their own, plus hosting, plus site security and more. Those services are what you provide them and it should be well worth it for almost any seller.
What else can I do with Dokan?
There are a ton of awesome features available, in addition to the WooCommerce, WordPress and BuddyPress extensions that may be available.
Dokan Extension Bundle – Nice awesome Dikan extension tools in one fun bundle. This is the best value for the money, giving you a bunch of the features below for a massive discount. If you want more than a couple of these extensions, it’s probably the best bargain.
Dokan PayPal Adaptive Payment – If you’d prefer to pay your sellers on the fly, this is the addon for you. When the customer pays, both you and the seller are paid immediately. If there’s a refund requested, it’s up to the seller to handle it. That keeps you from having to deal with paying sellers manually or having to deal with refunds. Pretty cool.
Dokan Seller Verification – This helps you verify the legitimacy of your prospective sellers, making sure they’ve got a social networking profile and checks their phone number. You can also require a photo-ID to verify sellers, which helps keep spam sellers to a minimum.
Dokan Store Support – Allow your sellers to create a support system at their own storefront, that really helps deliver a great customer experience. It allows all the features of your front end with this add-on.
Dokan Subscriptions – This is another great way to reduce spam, you can opt to simply charge your sellers a subscription fee per month (or a flat commission) to sell their products on your website. If you want to offer the best service possible with no spam, this is a wonderful option.
Dokan Stripe Connect – Want to pay your sellers in real-time, as sales are made? Want to avoid handling the hassle of refund requests? Stripe connect makes it so you can do both. This low-fee payment gateway is legendary for their speed and reliability.
Dokan Ajax Live Search – This is sort of like having your very own private label Google search feature on your site, allowing buyers to use your theme’s built in seach bar to quickly narrow down the products they’d like to buy via tags and categories.
Seller Vacation – If your seller needs a break from raking in all that money, they can set their status to ‘On Vacation’ letting buyers know that they’re not available until the seller returns, which takes the products offline temporarily. Pretty handy.
Dokan Product Enquiry – If you’d like to allow your customers to as about a product’s availability or feature set, the product enquiry tool is amazing, letting buyers connect to the seller right on the product page. Just install it and forget it, the extension does all the heavy lifting here.
Dokan Simple Auctions – If you’d like you sellers to be able to create eBay style auctions, Dokan can freely integrate the WooCommerce Simple Auctions plugin to allow that, right in the seller dashboard.
And that’s not all, there are plenty more options Dokan offers buyers and sellers.

Oh, hey, before I forget, you can check out the documentation and support forums to get an idea of how comprehensive they are.
Documentation Support
I’m not always that into product reviews, because the seller can really cherry pick the good ones, but I think this one sums it up.
Dokan is actually our 3rd plugin we invested in. We never had such good customer technical support in the past for any other plugins we bought. They usually answer questions very quickly. The solutions they offer are very precise.

Okay, so let’s wrap this thing up, shall we?
In conclusion, if you want to create a multi-vendor eCommerce site, Dokan is well worth looking at. For a fraction of the price of some of the other dedicated WordPress solutions, Dokan can offer similar, if not greater, options and extensions. There’s a reason this thing is incredibly popular, the flexibility of the extensions is a huge part of it.
I love that WooCommerce is at the center of this theme,WooCommerce has such a large market share and it’s development is consistent and strong, new features are constantly being added and the code is sharp with every update. Sell electronic goods or set up a shop that acts like a brick and mortar mall with many products from a variety of sellers. There are no limits to what you can do with this theme. The integration with WooCommerce also means that your store or marketplace can sell digital or physical products without any problem. This makes Dokan a good choice for anyone who doesn’t want to be constrained by what type of products their store can handle.
Setup is very simple, since it’s a plugin for an existing theme, the templates are all there for you to use. You can create a design that looks precisely like you want it to, fitting in with your company’s branding. That means no matter what sort of products you and your sellers are showcasing, the website will act as a perfect frame, making them look their very best. And since Dokan is so intuitive to use, it’s even simple for a beginner to use. Overcoming that fear of starting out is huge, Dokan does it with style.
The reports and seller feedback section is incredibly robust, giving your sellers a very detailed view of how their hard work is paying off as they build their business. The private dashboard is incredibly detailed and all of the relevant statistics are easily at hand for your sellers to pore over to find new, better ways to make sales and grow their business.
All in all, Dokan is a great little plugin, whether you use the Dokan theme or if you use it on your own theme, I think this one is destined to become a really great solution for a lot of people who want a powerful, full featured way to create a multi-vendor marketplace.
