Education is a Critical Missing Piece to the Electric Vehicle Puzzle; Here’s How Ford is Going to…
Education is a Critical Missing Piece to the Electric Vehicle Puzzle; Here’s How Ford is Going to Help Solve It
By Ted Cannis, Global Director, Electrification, Ford Motor Company
Tumblr media
A prototype Ford electric vehicle testing in frigid, snowy conditions.
As the head of electrification for Ford, the questions I get from family, friends and colleagues about electric vehicles run the gamut. “Are electric vehicles fast?” “Do they work in winter?” “Can I really give up visiting the gas station?” “Are they capable enough to help me do my job?”
The answer to all of the above — at least with Ford’s new lineup of electric vehicles — is yes. But there remains a gap between what an electric vehicle can do and what customers believe they can do.
This perception gap was evident as recently as a few weeks ago, when we made headlines by demonstrating that our all-electric F-150 prototype could tow more than 1 million pounds. Many were shocked — positively — about just how capable an electric vehicle can be.
Helping to de-bunk the widespread misconception among truck customers that an electric pickup truck can’t be as capable as gas-powered trucks is a small but an important step. Now, we are out to de-bunk other electric vehicle misconceptions just as we did with the F-150 demonstration: by showing — not just telling — so that potential customers can feel confident should they choose an electric vehicle in the future.
These myths come straight from the mouths of consumers via an independent global survey across Europe, China, and the U.S.
More than 90 percent of Americans and Europeans don’t believe quick acceleration is a great benefit of electric vehicles.
So where did this impression come from? Simple: A lot of companies, ourselves included, focused their initial electrification efforts on adhering to regulatory requirements. The cost of batteries was high, the price of developing new vehicle platforms was higher, and the necessary charging infrastructure to make it easy on customers simply didn’t exist. But that’s all changing fast.
Tumblr media
Ford engineers test an electric vehicle prototype inside a performance simulator.
So can we make an amazing, fun-to-drive thrilling electric vehicle? Trust me: We can.
As the company behind the Mustang, the Ford GT and off-road behemoths like the F-150 and Raptor, we have the best teams tuning vehicles for performance, handling, and off-road capability. It is those same teams that are now leveraging the full use of electrification to make vehicles that will be awesome to drive.
It starts with showcasing the benefits of the electric propulsion system, including the decision to take advantage of the benefits of “instant torque” — a fancy term that means electric vehicles can accelerate like hell if you want. But that’s just the start. We’re investing in an electric vehicle platform with right system power, motors, suspension, and tuning to get something really special that people would love to have.
To get a sneak peek at how we’re bringing some thrill to our electric vehicles, check out our engineers rocking the 3D simulator environment (think: the ultimate gaming setup) and doing hot laps at the race track. This is the same simulator that helps make our Ford Performance vehicles faster and allows us to recreate the driving conditions of real-life test circuits and race courses.
youtube
We’re out to prove just how exciting these cars can be.
Forty-two percent of Americans think electric vehicles still require gas to run.
It’s a question we get all the time. Early on when I started in this position, my family asked me this same question.
Nope, no gas. The truth is that when you drive an electric vehicle, you may never have to stop at a gas station again (except if you want beef jerky). In research clinics, I sat down with many electric vehicle owners in diverse places like California, China and Germany. You learn one thing very quickly: Among most owners, all their charging is done from the convenience of their home. Many have never visited a public charging station at all.
Similarly, surveys of U.S. battery electric vehicle owners show that 80 percent of charging occurs at home, followed by charging at work. For owners of gas or hybrid vehicles, we know it’s hard to break the habit of going to a gas station once or twice a week — most of us have been doing it without hesitation for decades. But how would you feel about never going to a gas station again?
For many electric owners you can do all your charging in the convenience, safety, and privacy of your own home. No more wading through slush and salt to fill up when temperatures drop below zero. No more standing outside boiling in the summer. No more wondering if you are going to smell like fuel. You get the picture. And it’s just about as easy as charging any other electronic device at home: plug it in and go about the rest of your day.
Electric vehicles operate entirely on electricity that is stored inside state-of-the-art rechargeable batteries. These batteries power electric motors that propel the car forward. No gasoline or diesel fuels required — electric vehicles don’t even have or need tailpipes. So unless you’re really craving your favorite snack, you can kiss those weekly gas station runs goodbye.
Close to 80 percent of Americans would not pick an electric vehicle for extreme weather, while nearly 65 percent would not choose one for all-wheel drive.
We get it. At Ford, we are all about safety. We understand that electric vehicles need to operate in a safe and reliable manner in whatever conditions Mother Nature throws at you — and give people the confidence they want when driving through tough conditions.
We can imagine where people may have gotten this impression. They have experienced cell phones with less charge in the cold. They have driven hybrid vehicles focused on fuel economy, not power. They have heard about electric vehicles with small batteries that can’t make the trip. Heck, most of us operate at sub-optimal levels when the temperatures drop.
Tumblr media
Given those impressions, it would probably come as a surprise to most Americans that the top market for electric vehicles in Europe last year was cold and mountainous Norway, with over 35,000 sales in the first half of this year. It would come as a surprise to most Europeans that hot Southern California and mile-high, snowy Denver are among the top U.S. markets for electric vehicles.
At Ford, we’ve gone to great lengths to test our electric vehicles in extreme conditions. And while it is true that you can anticipate a partial reduction in range in extreme conditions, it is not something that is going to sneak up on you. After all, do you ever notice how you can’t travel as far on a tank of gas in the winter — or in the summer if you’re blasting the air conditioning?
That is why we are giving our vehicles bigger batteries, so you can be confident and comfortable. It means we’re creating better software designed to maximize range for when you need it. You’ll know where you stand even before you get in your vehicle. Furthermore, we will help ensure that you will have plenty of time to decide when and where to use one of thousands of charging points across the country.
We are serious about ensuring the capability of all our vehicles, from tough F-Series trucks to fast-moving Mustangs. Whether you’re talking wet and snowy, hot and humid, or a run up the mountain, we’re putting our vehicles through their paces. This includes high-tech simulators, hot and cold test tracks, and long drives in rough real-world conditions.
We are developing our electric vehicle software to help give you better road handling, stability and performance by calibrating power distribution to the wheels when you need it. This will give you a new level of confidence in the snow and rain.
youtube
We’re well on our way to making sure our all-electric vehicles are just as capable at handling the environment as they are at saving it. We are no strangers to battery technology — our engineers have been delivering hybrid electric vehicles for decades and understand their chemical behavior — and our electric batteries are tested at temperatures as extreme as minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit. We’ve designed them with the right cooling systems as well as pre-conditioning strategies that help maintain the battery temperature for optimum performance when the car is plugged in. Because our customers need to keep running. It’s that simple.
Over two-thirds of Americans (67 percent) and Europeans (68 percent) don’t believe that electric vehicles are capable enough in terms of towing and hauling.
We know a thing or two about building tough, capable vehicles at Ford. You can bet that our electric vehicles are going to take advantage of electrification to unlock capabilities that people never saw coming. That means there are going to be a whole bunch of people in for some awe-inspiring surprises.
Electrification doesn’t have to be about compromise — and it won’t be at Ford. We can deliver vehicles that are electric, thrilling and tough all at the same time. And that’s exactly what we’re going to do.
Don’t believe me? Just watch our all-electric F-150 prototype haul over 1 million pounds.
youtube
The gap between perception and reality does not stop there. Check out the new electric vehicle website to learn more. There’s a lot more coming from Ford very soon.
The all-electric F-150 prototype is towing far beyond a production truck’s capacity in a one-time short event demonstration. Never tow beyond a vehicle’s towing capacity. Always consult the Owner’s Manual.

A consumer watchdog has exposed seven popular cars for having the same recurring problems. Which? said four well-known manufacturers should immediately recall specific models after its reliability survey found that a high proportion of owners reported the same faults, which indicates ‘serious production issues’. It found that each of these models have a single, prolific issues – from faulty batteries to flawed fuel systems resulting in widespread breakdowns – and manufacturers are showing a ‘blatant disregard for their customers’ by not recalling them.  Four of the seven cars highlighted are British-built: Nissan’s Qashqai and Juke produced in Sunderland and the Range Rover Velar and Range Rover Sport assembled in Solihull. ‘A blatant disregard for customers’: Consumer watchdog Which? has slammed four car makers for failing to recall models with known common problems. One of the seven cars identified with recurring issues is the British-built Nissan Qashqai The remaining three cars earmarked to be recalled by Which? are the Nissan Pulsar, BMW 5 Series Touring and Tesla Model S. All seven stood out in the results of the consumer group’s survey – one of the biggest vehicle reliability polls in the UK – completed by almost 50,000 drivers. And to make matters worse, three of the models – the Nissan Qashqai, Tesla Model S and BMW 5 Series Touring – were found to have exactly the same faults as when the consumer champion conducted its reliability survey last year.  Despite sharing the information of the research with car makers, Nissan, Tesla and BMW have failed to recalled these problematic cars. Who is responsible for vehicle recalls?  If a problem with a car could result in drivers, passengers and other road users being at risk, a safety recall will need to be issued. The Driver and Standards Agency (DVSA) overseas all safety recalls, and motorists are told to contact the agency if they believe their motor has a potentially life-threatening fault.   Once a fault has been identified, the DVSA’s team of engineers discuss potential fixes with car makers. Car brands are then legally obliged to inform the DVSA if they identify safety-related problems, and a recall is issued if the fault is likely to affect the ‘safe operation’ of the car or ‘may pose a significant risk to the driver, occupants and others’. However, all other types of recalls – essentially those that are deemed not to be safety related, such as problems with a touchscreen – are at the discretion of manufacturers.  By failing to recall these cars and resolving these common issues for free, manufacturers are allowing these vehicles to remain faulty on the road, with owners having to incur the costs to have known problems repaired.  That said, Nissan has taken steps to address the issue including replacing its part supplier. It also contacted 35,000 potentially affected Qashqai owners about getting a free update for their vehicle. But neither BMW, Land Rover and Tesla has gone as far as issuing a recall, while some have tried to deny there is any issue at all.  Which? called their actions a ‘blatant disregard for their customers’ which could leave large numbers of motorists facing hefty repair bills once the car comes out of warranty.  The consumer champion is calling on the manufacturers to issue a recall on the affected models – to alert drivers that their car could have a significant fault. This approach would also ensure a pre-emptive fix is made available for free, whether the car is under warranty or not. Harry Rose, Editor of Which? Magazine, said it is ‘completely unacceptable’ that trusted car brands ‘continue to take customer cash without fixing these widespread faults – many of which are already well-known thanks to our comprehensive survey of UK motorists’. He added: ‘Currently, car owners will have to foot the bill for faults once their car goes out of warranty, but it is not right for anyone to have to pay for production mistakes that these manufacturers are aware of. ‘If you are concerned your car might be unreliable, make sure you’re with a breakdown service you can trust and the next time you’re in the market for a new car, consider steering clear of these unreliable models.’  Annoyances with Nissans Which? found that three of the seven cars that owners reported as having a single prolific fault are from Nissan; the current Qashqai SUV built from 2014 to present, Pulsar hatchback (2014-2018) and previous-generation Juke (2010-2019) all being repeatedly reported as having a common fault. The Qashqai has for over a decade been the best-selling SUV in the UK. Feedback from owners showed that it not only scored the worst breakdown rate for any car less than three years old, it had a common fault across cars. One in five (21 per cent) of these keepers said they had needed to replace the battery in the previous 12 months – leaving most unable to start their car. Nissan has taken steps to address the issue including replacing its part supplier. It also contacted 35,000 potentially affected Qashqai owners about getting a free update for their vehicle The Pulsar, which is no longer sold in the UK, suffers the same battery-related issues as the Qashqai The less popular Pulsar was also exposed as having a significant battery issue, reported by three in 10 (28 per cent) of car owners with a vehicle aged between three and eight years old.  Based on the Which? survey, its battery problems are five times more likely to occur than an average vehicle of this age. Those surveyed said the car failed to start in virtually every case. The repeating problem with the Juke wasn’t battery related. Instead, one in five owners (20 per cent) of diesel examples between three and eight-years-old reported a problem with the fuel system.  In half of cases, owners reported the car breaking down, failing to start or told Which? they had found the car was unsafe to drive.  Fuel system issues appear to be riddling previous-generation Nissan Jukes – a fault that can be very pricey to have fixed What Nissan says: ‘We are aware of some battery failure on older Nissan models and have taken steps to address this issue, including replacing our battery supplier. ‘[We are] currently contacting 35,000 potentially affected Qashqai owners with a model produced between April 2018 and February 2019, for a free update to their vehicle. Currently, 80% of these vehicles have had the update applied. ‘[We are] committed to the highest standards of quality and reliability in [our] vehicles, and [are] continuing to work with any affected customers to resolve their concerns.’ Faults leaving Range Rover owners raging  Which?’s survey found that Land Rover models are riddled problems with the on-board computer software. Typically, this issue affected one in 20 (five per cent) of drivers overall. But owners of the Range Rover Velar (2017 to present) and Range Rover Sport 2013 to present) reported this type of issue more so than others (21 per cent and 17 per cent respectively). Both the Range Rover Velar (pictured) and Range Rover Sport have a high reported volume of touchscreen issues Despite on-board computer problems causing headaches for almost one in five Range Rover Sport owners who completed the Which? reliability survey, Land Rover said this was not an adequate sample size Which? believes the issue may lie with the brand’s ‘Touch Pro Duo’ – the dual 10-inch infotainment touchscreens in the centre console – which the Velar first introduced and the Range Rover Sport adopted in 2018.  This would explain why only younger versions of the Sport suffer the problem to this extent. What Land Rover says: ‘Land Rover takes product quality seriously, listening to customers and continuously striving to improve.  ‘To this end, Land Rover is introducing software over the air to its new products, allowing remote updates. ‘Having analysed Which?’s research, Land Rover understands that 0.12 per cent of Range Rover Velar and 0.22 per cent of Range Rover sport customers have been surveyed. We don’t believe this is representative of the vast majority of satisfied customers.’ Tesla troubles  Teslas aren’t cheap. In fact, even a second-hand Model S (2013 to present) will cost over £50,000. So you’d rightfully expect a certain level of quality. However, one in five (18 per cent) owners of cars between three and eight years old reported faults with its pop-out door handles (or locks). The issue with the Tesla Model S is affecting older cars. Some 18% of owners of cars in this age bracket said the pop-out door handles had malfunctioned  What Tesla says: ‘We review every vehicle […] before it leaves the factory. Our warranties cover any repairs and replacements necessary for door handles for up to four years, and […] Tesla can perform repair work via mobile service, which can be done at a customer’s home or office.’ Which? also asked about cars after the four-year warranty and whether customers could avoid paying for the repair. Tesla responded: ‘The price outside of warranty is £250-£270, including parts, labour and tax.’ Bad times for BMW owners  Of the 280 car models Which? has reliability data for, three to eight-year-old BMW 5 Series Touring cars (2010 to 2017) have the second-highest fault rate linked to one single problem with a quarter of owners (26 per cent) reporting issues with their suspension. Five times as many owners of this vehicle reported problems with their suspension component than is normal for other cars the same age. Despite this, BMW said this is the first it has heard about potential suspension problems with the big estate car. Expensive suspension components are the bane of BMW 5 Series Touring owners. Over a quarter said their car had this sort of issue What BMW says: ‘BMW has conducted additional analysis of all warranty claims from launch to present day and this analysis confirms nothing unusual about suspension claims across the 33,000 vehicles sold. ‘We encourage any dissatisfied Which? reader, whether they participated in this survey or not, to contact BMW UK on 0370 505 0160, making reference to Which?, so that we can investigate their concerns.’ SAVE MONEY ON MOTORING Some links in this article may be affiliate links. Corona pushes Korean companies to the edge

Corona pushes Korean companies to the edge
New virus pneumonia is spreading in Korea, and aviation demand is falling sharply. Photo: Incheon Airport, Korea, with no tourists (Photo: Reuters / Afro)
The new coronavirus has seriously affected Korea's entire industry. It covers all Korean domestic industries, regardless of manufacturing or service industries.
事態 This situation has broken the expectations of the government at the beginning of the year, saying that "2020 is a V-shaped economic recovery". "In addition to the overall economic downturn, the coronavirus has started to slow the Korean economy further, especially because of its reliance on overseas markets, leading to an international supply chain," said Song Tae-eun, a faculty of economics at Yonsei University. Some companies are tough, jobs will worsen and the economy will worsen further. "
■ Disruption of the automotive supply chain
現代 A representative example of the damage this time is the Hyundai Motor Group. It has been hit hard by the spread of corona and the collapse of the global supply chain. It is expected that demand for automobiles will decrease in the future.
現代 On March 19, 2020, Hyundai Motor's stock price dropped to 65,900 won (about 5780 yen). This has returned to the level of May 2009, when full-fledged growth in international markets began after the Lehman shock. The stock prices of key companies in the group, such as Kia Motors and Hyundai Mobis, have fallen sharply.
Hyundai Motor's worldwide sales reached the lowest level in 10 years. Worldwide sales in February 2020 were 235,745 units, down 10.2% year-on-year. Sales in China have dropped sharply, with February sales down to 1007 units. It was 38,017 units in February 2019. During the same period, the sales volume of Kia Motors decreased from 20,203 units to 972 units. Operations at local factories in China have been suspended, and sales offices have also been closed.
影響 The effects of the disruption of the global supply network are even more widespread. The company had procured a wiring harness that connects various electronic components to the vehicle body from a Chinese factory, but operation of the factory was suspended for several days. This has been affected not only by Hyundai Motor and Kia Motor, but also by Renault Samsung, Korea GM and Sanyong. The disruption of the international supply chain has become a prime example of the negative impact on industry.
Fortunately, the infection situation in China seems to be in the convergence phase. The peak is seen in Korea as well. But another problem began. Coronavirus spread to the United States and Europe, the largest export markets for these companies, is likely to reduce local demand.
1January to March 2020 was a severe result due to the stagnation of the Chinese market and the collapse of the supply chain. From April to June, red lights began to light on sales in the US and Europe.
■ Decline in demand in Europe and the United States is inevitable
現代 Hyundai Motor's sales performance in February 2020 held up in North America and Europe, avoiding a significant decline in business performance. After China responded to the deployment of the THAAD (ground-based missile interception system) in 2017 and retaliated against South Korea, the company focused on sales in Europe and the United States. As a result, North America and Europe accounted for 51.7% of total sales of Hyundai Motor Group in 2019.
According to Kim Jin-Wu, a researcher at Korea Investment Securities, "the major automakers around the world are continually losing operations at factories in Europe and the United States. The economy is deteriorating, and a decline in demand is inevitable."
A worker at Hyundai Motor's Alabama plant in the United States has been shut down since the morning of March 18, after an employee was diagnosed with a new type of coronavirus infection. In Europe, plant operation may be interrupted. The company's Czech factory union has called for a 14-day suspension of operations and thorough quarantine.
The crisis for finished car manufacturers is also a crisis for the auto parts industry. Mando, Korea's second-largest auto parts maker, recently recruited volunteers for manufacturing jobs. The company will also promote in-house job sharing (circular leave, in which employees take time off without turning off employees). The decision is based on the belief that if car sales continue to slump, factory operation rates will fall further.
It is the company's decision to resign in manufacturing since 2008. Battery makers and steel makers have a great sense of crisis. According to the worldwide sluggish sales of automobiles, worsening business results in the first half of 2020 are inevitable. Three battery shell manufacturers in Korea, including SK Innovation, LG Chemical and Samsung SDI, have production bases in Europe and the United States, and are now at risk of plant shutdown.
The shipbuilding industry, which has suffered over the past few years, has also been dim. Korea Shipbuilding and Oceans recently said, "We are directly affected by the world economy and have no choice but to prepare for the worst situation. We need to completely reconsider the 2020 orders, business goals and business plans that were drafted earlier this year." Appealed to employees.
(4) The semiconductor industry, which is the mainstay of the Korean economy, is worried that the recovery phase of the market will be slower than direct damage such as sales. It has emerged from the steep decline in 2019 and is expected to recover from the beginning of 2020, but it is possible that the recovery will be even slower.
■ Travel demand has almost disappeared
It is no exaggeration to say that demand in the travel and aviation industries has almost disappeared. The Korea Airlines Association estimates that the sales of eight Korean airlines in the first half of 2020 will decrease by at least 5,087.5 billion won (about 450 billion yen). International passenger traffic in February fell 47% year-over-year, and it is certain that it will worsen in March.
According to Incheon International Airport, the number of passengers using the airport between March 1 and 15 was 417,093 (inbound and outbound total), down 85.2% year-on-year. The number of passengers on March 11 fell to 10,522, and the number is about 10,000. The airport had the fewest passengers at 26,773 on May 20, 2003, when the spread of SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) peaked.
数 In 2017, the number of passengers decreased due to the conflict between THAAD and Korea. 2019 was affected by the Korea-Japan trade conflict. The aviation industry is now facing the worst crisis with the coronavirus, and is said to be "the time to survive and survive." With business operations virtually suspended, they have to withstand fixed costs and wait for the situation to subside.
The airline has taken paid and unpaid leave for employees. Korean Air has called for cabin attendants to take unpaid leave, and Asiana Airlines also has given all staff 10 days of unpaid leave. Six LCCs (cheap airlines) also have paid or unpaid leave or reduced work.
20 About 20% of all aviation industry employees, about 40,000, are said to be on leave. In addition, we are accepting applications for unpaid leave for pilots (about 300 people) who have been suffering from chronic shortages. For example, the pilot union at Easter Airlines has offered the company a voluntary return of 25% of wages in order to overcome the business crisis and share the pain.
■ Bankruptcy companies continue in the travel industry
The biggest problem is that you don't know how long you should endure. Looking back at the 2003 SARS and the 2015 MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome), infectious diseases had a major impact on aviation demand for a few months, and then needed up to six months to recover demand .
言 っ Even if the new coronavirus is lulling, it is likely that the situation will continue until at least the first half of 2020. Therefore, it is necessary to endure 2020. "Even if we reduce fixed costs, such as unpaid leave, the amount is less than aircraft leasing and additional costs. For airlines that do not receive cash support from the parent company in the group, It will not be easy to get over the crisis. "
The travel industry is even more serious than the aviation industry. Some companies have gone bankrupt rather than closed. According to some surveys, 56 general travel companies in Korea and overseas went out of business from January 20 to March 13. Large hotels in the center of Seoul have been closed temporarily, and foreign group tourists have been the main customers. These hotels will be suspended until the end of April.
Meanwhile, the petrochemical industry is suffering from falling oil prices. Korea's largest company, S-Oil, is considering recruiting volunteers for the first time since its founding in 1976. Companies that are not affected by the new coronavirus, but have already lost their strength due to management difficulties, have been pushed to the forefront of this situation.
For example, Hung-A Shipping, Korea's fifth-largest shipping business, has finally applied for joint management of its creditors. Coronavirus was not the main reason that the application was driven. To date, the company's earnings have deteriorated since 2016 due to the oversupply of vessels on the Southeast Asian route and the deterioration of the container market. Until now, sales of assets have been repeated, but no improvement has been obtained.
斗 Doosan Heavy Industries, which had been declining in sales, was also in trouble. The company recruited voluntary retirees in February. The business condition has deteriorated enough to consider company-wide leave. The company should redeem the bonds in 2020 by 1,243.5 billion won (approximately 110 billion yen), giving out the majority of its holdings by June, starting with 600 billion won in April (about 53 billion yen) There must be. Given the company's ability to generate cash flow, it's too large. (Korea `` Chuo Ilbo Economist '' March 30, 2020)

Covid-19 pandemic arouses solidarity in companies across the country
Factory of the Indecense lingerie brand exchanges production to make masks, a product that is missing in every country (photo: Personal file / disclosure )
The coronavirus pandemic spread, in addition to Covid-19, panic and desolation among the Brazilian population. But it also brought out the best in human beings: solidarity. The feeling that I need to help the other person went beyond personal relationships. Faced with a probable collapse of the economy, with the closure of non-essential activities, entrepreneurs open the hand of profit to keep jobs, make donations reach where they really are needed and change production to guarantee the supply of essential products in times of contamination. .
In Brazil, the examples are multiplying. From the supermarket chains that are defining exclusive times for the elderly, with greater risk, through communication groups that are opening services free of charge to bring information to everyone, to family businesses that distribute equipment to employees and ensure isolation without discounting salary, Brazilian entrepreneurs are showing that it is not all about profit and that, at the time of tightening, the urgency of helping those who need it most.
Research carried out by Rede Brasil do Global Pacto, a corporate sustainability initiative of the United Nations (UN), found that 10% of respondents are developing measures to contain or limit Covid-19's progress, such as donating equipment or inputs to hospitals. Carlo Pereira, executive director of the Global Compact, explains that the coronavirus crisis brings additional pressures. “Companies have to act with corporate citizenship for the continuity of business and the economy as a whole,” he says.
The lingerie factory Indecense, in Guapor (RS), did not hesitate to stop the production of designer goods to focus on making masks, an essential product to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus and which is lacking in almost the entire country. The owners of Indecense, the sisters Loivane and Eliane Dal Sant, are distributing the masks to markets, pharmacies and gas stations in order to guarantee the health of the employees of the businesses that remain open.
Large groups, such as Ambev and Boticrio, take advantage of the synergy of the businesses to form a coalition for the distribution of alcohol in gel, explains Carlo Pereira. “In the disasters in Minas Gerais (Brumadinho and Mariana), there were so many donations that coordination was lacking to distribute them. This is what companies are organizing now, so that the donated products are those that are really in short supply and that they reach where they are needed ”, he points out.
TruckPad, a connection platform between truck drivers and cargo from Latin America, is willing to help in the transportation of essential goods at this time of crisis. Carlos Mira, CEO of TruckPad, says that the company offers free transportation for goods that are donated to hospitals and medical assistance entities. “We did a recent survey and almost 100% of truck drivers are willing to continue working, to avoid shortages in the country,” he says. The platform has 400 thousand registered drivers. “Any entity that is going to donate material to hospitals, lots of alcohol gel, masks, can request our support. We will locate and hire the truck driver. The freight will be donated. our contribution ”, guarantees.
According to Carlo Pereira, from the Global Compact, there is a very strong feeling of community among business leaders. “Entrepreneurs ask us what they can do to collaborate”, he points out. For him, the pandemic has awakened a feeling of community that has been dormant for the past few decades. “There is a chronological distance from the new generations of World War II, which was the last world event that generated this wave of global solidarity”, he says.
Among the most common measures promoted by companies to contain the virus advance is the adoption of home office policies. The majority, 77%, according to the Global Compact survey of Brazil, implemented some type of remote work. Whenever they do, workers are carrying out the activities of their homes and, when this is not possible for everyone, prioritized for the most vulnerable individuals. Face-to-face meetings and travel have also been avoided by most organizations (95%). Another way indicated to contain the spread of the virus is the adoption of channels to clarify doubts: 90% divulge prevention information in internal channels and have health professionals available to answer questions.
On the gacho coast, the Milo ice cream parlor exercises the corporate citizenship to which Pereira refers. Even in the face of a possible drop in revenue, the family business dismissed employees, without discounting wages, and created a WhatsApp group, called Milo X Coronavrus, to which everyone should pay attention to receive information and keep in touch. Milo has also provided equipment such as 70% alcohol masks and sprayers and is organizing holidays in shifts, so that employees are not harmed in the face of the economic chaos to come.
Cooperation
For commercial law specialist Adriana Pugliesi, most people are mobilizing in cooperation with respect to the impact of business. “The market and economic relations have a network form, the agents are intertwined. In some cases, business is not good. As they are interconnected, they need the financial health of their partners ”, explains Adriana. In the correlation of forces, the big ones help the little ones so that everyone survives.
She points out, however, that some sectors are being directly affected, such as air, tourism, transport. “Even if some workers can do home office, others need to be on the front line,” he warns. Adriana recalls that Brazil had been going through a relevant crisis since 2014. “We were in a slow recovery process and many companies were already in financial crisis. Now, the impact will be even greater and it will not depend on the State alone. For this reason, the cooperation regime is going to be very strong now ”, he says.
Food and transportation apps are attentive to today's special needs. IFood is allocating R $ 50 million of its revenue to an assistance fund focused on small restaurants and injecting R $ 600 million of working capital into the Brazilian market, anticipating receipts at no additional cost. The amount collected by iFood in fees for the “Pra Retirar” service (in which users place an order via the app and withdraw directly at the restaurant) will be fully refunded to partners. It also made available to users of the app the option “Delivery without Contact”, a solution to prevent spread and ensure that even those who are infected can order food at home without running the risk of transmitting the virus.
Uber has put a team on hand 24 hours a day to assist public health officials in their pandemic response plan. “During our work with the authorities, it is possible that temporary suspension of the accounts of users or driver partners will occur after confirmation that they have contracted or been exposed to Covid-19. We also rely on the advice of an epidemiologist to ensure that the measures taken by our company are based on medical guidelines ”, explains the CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi.
The company also guarantees financial assistance for up to 14 days to partner drivers who may be contaminated, while their account is suspended. “We have already helped partner drivers in some affected areas and are working to implement this measure quickly around the world,” he says. It is also making resources available to help partner drivers to keep their cars clean.
There is a maxim that says that moments of crisis are also opportunities. Now is the time for everyone to do their part: stay home and not miss the opportunity to be lonely.

Advance Technology of Air Springs Market 2017-2026: Continental AG, Dunloop Systems and Components, Firestone Industrial LLC, Hendrickson LLC
According to the latest market report published by Fact.MR, growing penetration of air springs in luxury passenger vehicles continues to open new growth opportunities for manufacturers. Traditionally limited to heavy commercial vehicles, end-user preference for comfort, glide ride, and suspension adjustment are impacting where the revenue is going in the air springs landscape. Stakeholders in the air springs market must consider the evolutions in this marketplace if they are to rapidly adapt to the new status quo. For more info, Get Free PDF at: https://www.factmr.com/connectus/sample?flag=S&rep_id=716 Fact.MR Survey Finds Weight Reduction and Flex Cracking Mitigation as Key Focus Areas for Manufacturers The air springs market remains fragmentally consolidated, with a large number of America, Chinese, and Indian suppliers/distributors vying for increasing their market penetration and share. A majority of market participants covered in the market have a sizeable presence in APEJ and North America – two key air springs markets globally. Sensing the untapped opportunities in this marketplace, leading manufacturers, including BWI Group, Continental AG, Dunloop Systems and Components, Firestone Industrial LLC, Hendrickson LLC, Mando Corporation, Tata AutoComp Systems, ThyssenKrupp AG, VB AirSuspension, and Wabco Holdings Inc. are focusing on reducing weight and mitigating flex cracking as key focus areas. “Although air springs offer a better ride quality than steel and coil springs, vulnerability to wear and tear, and high maintenance costs continue to impede widespread adoption. Manufacturers who are able to scale up without compromising on quality will have a better shot at market consolidation. Whereas luxury car manufacturers equip air springs as an additional feature, these are steadily gaining traction as standard features in heavy vehicles,” says lead automotive analyst at Fact.MR. End-Users List High Upfront Cost and Relatively Lower Lifecycle as Key Barriers to Adoption According to the analysis carried out by Fact.MR’s automotive research team, high upfront costs and relatively lower lifecycles remain the key barriers to widespread adoption of air springs for end-users. Although the analysts have a bullish long-term outlook, the mantra for success is to mitigate high OEM upfront costs when compared to the aftermarket.

Top Muscle Vehicles Sold at Auto Auctions
You never know which vehicles you might find at an auto auction. They are some of the sweetest muscle cars that will sold at auto auctions in the past couple of years.
1971 Hemi ‘Cuda Convertible
This is a rare find as one of just 11 produced in 1971 and perfect condition to boot. At the auction, this particular beauty sold for $2. 2 mil, but everyone expected it in order to fetch a million or two greater than that!
The only “ flaw” in this beast was that it had a replacement engine instead of the one which the manufacturer installed when they built the vehicle. Even considering that little problem, this particular buyer got a deal of the lifetime in this muscle car!
1965 Shelby Cobra Roadster CSX
Carroll Shelby of Ford Electric motor Company wanted to design a muscle tissue car to compete with the Corvette. So , they built a new framework to fit a V8 engine plus released the 1965 Shelby Cobra Roadster CSX in September associated with 1961.
This beautiful bit of machinery has a 4. 3-liter light-weight, small block engine that had tons of testing and tweaking prior to its release. This Shelby Cobra Roadster sold for almost $1. six million at Barrett Jackson’s Chandler Arizona auction held in 2015.
1967 Corvette L88S Coupe
This stunning specimen is one of the very most coveted Corvettes ever built. Chevy only made 20 of these within 1967 and this was the only one using a red-on-red color scheme.
These muscle cars boast the heavy-duty suspension and a 430 hp engine. Also, the technicians fine-tuned the transmission for the best performance. This particular beauty is perfect for a drag race track!
The problems with this beast of a muscle vehicle are that it had no radio stations, no heater, and no air conditioning. Therefore , nothing as far as creature conveniences and things you want for long driving.
This attractiveness sold to at an auction within 2014 for a staggering $3. eighty-five million!
1954 Pontiac Bonneville Special Motorama Idea Car
Within the early 1950s, GM started marketing in order to younger demographics and their automobile designs reflect this new path. The Pontiac Bonneville Special idea car is one of only 2 that Pontiac built… ever!
The Pontiac Bonneville Particular concept has a low to the floor sports car feel with a lightweight fiber glass body. This Pontiac concept vehicle also had an enclosed cockpit along with flip-up side windows to make it think that a race car and, furthermore off, a beefy V8 motor beneath the hood.
Within 2006, at the Barrett-Jackson’s 35th-anniversary public sale in Scottsdale, the Pontiac Bonneville Special Concept car sold for $3. 08 million!
1966 Shelby Cobra 427 “Super Snake”
This particular stunning machine is the rarest Cobra that exists these days and it is certainly one of only two Super Snakes actually built. Since the other one has disappeared, this is the only Cobra out there!
After rigorous testing, this particular Cobra received the honor to be a full Competition Roadster because it nevertheless has its original parts such as the aluminum “Super Snake” hood. It is obvious why this muscle vehicle sold for $5. 115 million!
1967 L88 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible

Top Muscle Cars Sold at Auto Auctions
You never know which cars you might find at an auto auction. These are some of the sweetest muscle cars that sold at auto auctions in the past few years.
1971 Hemi ‘Cuda Convertible
This is a rare find as one of only 11 produced in 1971 and pristine condition to boot. At the auction, this beauty sold for $2.2 million, but everyone expected it to fetch a million or two more than that!
The only “flaw” in this beast was that it had a replacement engine instead of the one that the manufacturer installed when they built the car. Even considering that little problem, this buyer got a deal of a lifetime in this muscle car!
1965 Shelby Cobra Roadster CSX
Carroll Shelby of Ford Motor Company wanted to design a muscle car to compete with the Corvette. So, they built a new frame to fit a V8 engine and released the 1965 Shelby Cobra Roadster CSX in September of 1961.
This beautiful piece of machinery has a 4.3-liter lightweight, small block engine that went through tons of testing and tweaking before its release. This Shelby Cobra Roadster sold for almost $1.6 million at Barrett Jackson’s Scottsdale Arizona auction held in 2015.
1967 Corvette L88S Coupe
This stunning specimen is one of the most coveted Corvettes ever built. Chevy only made 20 of these in 1967 and this was the only one with a red-on-red color scheme.
These muscle cars boast a heavy-duty suspension and a 430 horsepower engine. Also, the technicians fine-tuned the transmission for the best performance. This beauty is perfect for a drag racing track!
The downsides to this beast of a muscle car are that it had no radio, no heater, and no air conditioning. So, nothing as far as creature comforts and things you want for long-distance driving.
This beauty sold to at an auction in 2014 for a staggering $3.85 million!
1954 Pontiac Bonneville Special Motorama Concept Car
In the early 1950s, GM started marketing to younger demographics and their vehicle designs reflect this new direction. The Pontiac Bonneville Special concept car is one of only two that Pontiac built… ever!
The Pontiac Bonneville Special concept has a low to the ground sports car feel with a lightweight fiberglass body. This Pontiac concept car also had an enclosed cockpit with flip-up side windows to make it feel like a race car and, to top it all off, a beefy V8 engine beneath the hood.
In 2006, at the Barrett-Jackson’s 35th-anniversary auction in Scottsdale, the Pontiac Bonneville Special Concept car sold for $3.08 million!
1966 Shelby Cobra 427 “Super Snake”
This stunning machine is the rarest Cobra that exists these days and it is one of only two Super Snakes ever built. Since the other one no longer exists, this is the only Cobra out there!
After rigorous testing, this Cobra received the honor of being a full Competition Roadster because it still has its original parts including the aluminum “Super Snake” hood. It’s obvious why this muscle car sold for $5.115 million!
1967 L88 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible
This stunner’s beautiful Stingray design has held its value over the years and it is one of only 20 made in 1967. Most of those models were a company secret sold only to racing teams.
Because Life Is More Fun With a Little Muscle
You can find awesome muscle cars at almost every auto auction these days, and they’re popular among the buyers at the auctions also! Knowing which cars are your top muscle cars before auction day gives you a little edge when bidding.

Downtown Seattle is now basically Amazon central
Businesswoman working on digital tablet on deck of office overlooking cityscape

Walk down Seventh Avenue in downtown Seattle and you can’t miss them: Three gigantic spheres resembling melted-together Milk Duds rising in the shadow of Amazons new 500-foot-tall office tower.
The architectural oddity has already become a tourist attraction and social media phenomenon. Passersby snap photographs and watch construction crews attach glass panes to the steel frames. Images stream through Instagram and Twitter.
When they open in 2018, the 100-foot-tall orbsAmazon calls them Biosphereswill host more than 300 plant species from around the world, creating what the company sees as the workplace of the future. Amazonians will be able to break from their daily labors to walk amid the greenery along suspension bridges and climb into meeting spaces resembling bird nests perched in mature trees, where the company expects them to brainstormand perhaps even invent the next billion-dollar opportunity.
The future Amazon.com Inc headquarters is seen near the Space Needle in Seattle, Washington. Seattle has seen significant development since the arrival of Amazon.com, Inc.

Amazon’s new headquarters was designed to project a forward-thinking company eager to help employees be more productive, creative and happy by providing a connection to nature. But the most trend-setting and appealing feature of the new complex is most likely its location: plopped between glass and steel high-rises on a busy street in downtown Seattle where food trucks are abundant, apartments are within walking distance and Happy Hour greets employees at quitting time.
Over the years, founder and Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos has made clear his disdain for the free lunches, massages and other perks commonplace in the suburban enclaves of Google, Apple and Facebook. His big advantage in the amenities arms race is a commitment to preserving an urban campus, no matter how big his company gets.
Other tech companies are following his lead by squeezing new offices into cities where millennials prefer to live. LinkedIn consolidated staff scattered around San Francisco into a 26-story tower in March. Salesforce.com will be the anchor tenant in a 61-story skyscraper a few miles away that will be the city’s tallest upon completion in 2018. Uber has plans for a new headquarters in San Francisco’s Mission Bay. Industrial-age leviathans are doing it, too. General Electric is shifting from suburban Connecticut to Boston, while McDonald’s is moving from Oak Brook, Illinois, to Chicago.

Amazon’s is the most ambitious gambit of them all. When its spheres and three surrounding towers are completed, the company will have 10 million square feet of office space in Seattle, more than 15 percent of the city’s inventory, on a campus that occupies more than 10 square blocks. That will provide space for Amazon to more than double in size, to 50,000 Seattle workers in the next decade. “How big can Amazon get and stay in Seattlethats what theyre trying to find out,” says Glenn Kelman, founder and CEO of online real estate company Redfin. “Can you create a massive company in the middle of a city?”
Amazon’s commitment to Seattle began long before the spheres were conceived. In 2010, the company moved to South Lake Union from leased space it was outgrowing in an old medical building. Amazon leased retail space on the ground floor of its office buildings to hand-picked bars, restaurants and coffee shops, speeding the neighborhood’s transformation from a hodgepodge of car dealerships and second-hand stores into a vibrant business district where people could work, live and hang out.

Veteran fine-dining restaurateur Tom Douglas was among the businesses lured by a growing concentration of well-paid tech workers. His survey of Amazon workers indicated they wanted cheap burgers and beer, which encouraged him to break from his traditional model and open the Brave Horse Tavern with a wide assortment of local brews, pub fare and long tables for family-style seating. “I’m sure glad we did that survey, because we might not have gone with this concept otherwise,” Douglas said. “At the time, none of us realized how big and fast Amazon would grow.” The economic ripples from Amazon have since pushed beyond burger joints and cafes. Yellow cranes mark the skyline where new office towers, hotels and luxury apartments are rising.
Just six years after relocating, Amazon has outgrown South Lake Union and is marching toward the city’s urban core. The spheres are the company’s boldest architectural statement yet in the first project it’s building from the ground up.

They were inspired by Amazon research indicating that a key thing missing from typical work environments is a link to the natural world, said John Schoettler, the company’s global real estate director. The challenge was creating an environment conducive to plants without being hot and muggy like a greenhouse; the spheres had to be comfortable for humans.
A staff horticulturist scoured the globe for species that can thrive in a cool, dry environment. Many of the plants are endangered species, meaning that the spheres double as a conservation project. Schoettler said the design was chosen to be an architectural focal point in the city, similar to the iconic Space Needle. “We wanted to create a place employees would be proud of and proud to bring their families,” he said.
Inevitably, the company’s growing presence is making it a scapegoat for common urban woes such as traffic jams and rising rents. New, luxury, one-bedroom apartments packed with amenities that appeal to young urban tech workers fetch upwards of $4,000 a month, putting them out of reach of the Starbucks barista.
To some long-time Seattleites, the new South Lake Union feels sterile, like an open-air mall. Wide sidewalks are devoid of cigarette butts and shattered beer bottles. Street people banging bongos and strumming acoustic guitars with mangy dogs in tow, a common sight in Seattles retail and financial districts, are conspicuously absent. South Lake Union has become “a dormitory for Amazon and now Facebook and Google,” said Jeff Reifman, a tech consultant.

Meanwhile, the Space Needle’s owners have complained that all the towers being thrown up by Amazon and developers hoping to house its workers are crowding out views of the aging tourist attraction.
For now, Amazon’s growth seems unstoppable, and it will continue to redefine Seattle, one of the nation’s fastest-growing cities. Nathan Wilhite, 36, helped fuel that growth when he moved from Chicago to Seattle four years ago. He rides his bike to work, parks it in an Amazon bike locker and showers before starting at about 8 a.m. He’ll break for a spinach, avocado and almond milk smoothie while catching some sun in a courtyard where other Amazonians congregate to eat lunch.
Wilhite is glad he picked the Amazon job over opportunities he considered in Silicon Valley that would have required long commutes by car. The way he sees it, “one of the best recruiting tools Amazon has is if people come interview on a nice day, and people are sitting outside having lunch from a food truck.”
