ana de armas + she/her + cis-woman  –  have you seen magdelena "lena" ibarra around los angeles? the thirty three year old is usually jamming to daddy lessons by beyonce ft. the chicks. word around the city is that they’re determined yet, they can also be snarky, but you didn’t hear that from me. they’re currently an executive assistant  and are typically seen walking the streets of los angeles with their favorite daily planner. when i think of them, i think of color coded schedules, beer bottles with peeled off labels and riding a motorcycle in heels. let’s hope the city treats them good!

background →
magdelena ibarra--lena, as she would be known-- was born to Selena & Raul Ibarra as their only daughter. Only child, which was in stark contrast to the dreams that had held for their family. They had been envisioning a dynasty, one that could stand the test of times--and trends--to remain on top. selena was a former singer turned entrepenuer who created the nation's first fair-paying streaming service, melodia. it had taken the industry like wildfire and while it had not surpassed spotify, it absolutely held a name for itself. raul had been her manager in her younger days--a rare case of when a working relationship could transition flawlessly into true love. lena, despite the parentage she had, was hardly musical. she couldn't hold a beat, had no idea how to read music and couldn't understand rhythm for the life of her. her parents weren't sure where they went wrong, but always tried to love her regardless. er, well they always loved her--but sometimes, well, it was hard to celebrate a daughter that couldn't carry the family talent. most especially for selena, who always envisioned doing a comeback tour with her daughter at her side. the last chance for lena to make her family proud was becoming the next ceo for melodia--and boy did her parents know it, at every turn, she was enrolled in business classes. young entreupener programs. internships for middle schoolers. even a business camp to support the up and coming. and boy did lena hate it. for how type a and organized she was, she couldn't stand how her parents aimed to control her. she was a free spirit, an adreneline junkie--she needed to chart her own path. she flat out rejected their offers, and begrudgingly went to the things she couldn't escape. but at 18, she determined that her life was hers and hers alone--and she would not let her parents make her a puppet. dramatic? sure, but that was lena ibarra--if she could have carried a tune, broadway would be shaking in their kinky boots. so off she went, far from miami and the comfort of her family, to los angeles, where celebrities were a dime a dozen and no one would give a shit what the last name ibarra was. she applied for any posiiton she could find at a record studio--only because she did know the industry but not because she felt it would be her calling, finally working her way up to executive assistant to the president. no one would even bat an eye at her, for how unimportnat her position was. just how she liked it.

Miami, FL,  Jan 11-13, 2020
Tumblr media
[Meet my new friend @Vizcaya Museum and Gardens]
Winter in Miami is probably a New Yorker’s dream, at least for me as I drown in layers of coats and sweaters and can still barely feel my own hands... Have to say, the weather here in Jan was the optimal combination of humidity and warmth. I was also pleasantly surprised by how metropolitan the downtown area is. Unlike other any tropical cities I’ve been to before, Miami has a strong big city vibe with all the vibrant bars, restaurants, stacks of tall buildings and 24-hour convenience stores (--those are important too okay?!).
A brief rundown of key locations from my way-too-short-not-ready-to-go-back weekend trip, hope these helps--
Saturday afternoon: arrived and checked into rental apartment in Brickell Icon (great location in downtown), amazed by the weather, got food at La Mar, and went out to a couple bars (Sugar, Blue Martini Brickell)
Sunday:  brunch at Dolores But You Can Call Me Lolita, toured Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, ubered to Wynwood and absolutely loved the area, dessert at The Salty Donut, random dinner at Pollos y Jarras (not very good)
Monday: Perez Art Museum, airpot...
Food
In terms of food (by now you all know I love food/taking photos of them), you also have options, but can get a little tricky. While ceviches and cervezas seem like the obvious choices, for someone who not only can't eat dairy (mixed in most ceviches) but also not a big fun of beer, I had a hard time finding things to eat in some of the most popular restaurants... For example, when we went to CVI.CHE 105, one of the best+most reviewed place on Yelp,  99% of the dishes on the elaborate menu do not/couldn't be adjusted to accommodate my lactose intolerance. However, if you re into smoothies and cafes and açaí bowls, you’d be very happy here. There are also a great selection of Cuban and Peruvian food for apparent reasons (literally everyone here speaks Spanish, I felt a little left out tbh) and somehow an astonishing number of restaurants here are asian fusion. For recommendations, I would give you just one, for good view and services. Food itself was decent, but not mind blowing in any ways.
La Mar by Gaston Acurio in Mandarin Oriental
South American food (supposedly)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Grilled octopus was definitely one of the better dishes we tried!]
Tumblr media
[Branizo in ponzu sauce, a little salty for me. Comes with rice ...?!]
Tumblr media
[stir fried steak with rice, is this considered South American? Or am I just too Asian and everything tasted Asian...]
Dolores But You Can Call Me Lolita
Normal brunch with extra hip name, limited coffee options (as in only black coffee...), but lots of cocktails!
Tumblr media
The Salty Donut
The vegan donut (pictured below) was really not that good. Regular ones might be better, good reviews online at least...!
Tumblr media
Bars
Miami is famous for its nightlife. Although because of time constraint and mostly my 11pm bedtime, we did not explore too much. I ended up going to 2 bars only (Sugar and Blue Martini, both in Brickell) and called it a day. Some clubs recommended to me by friends include E11EVEN MIAMI, Club Space, LIV, and Story (last two are in South Beach).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Sugar: a rooftop bar with great views, but gets pretty crowded]
Tumblr media
[Blue Martini: fun vibe, more clubby and had dancers. They serve cocktail with the shaker which was kinda nice. Wish I had a better photo but I don't...]
Museums
Loved Vizcaya Museum and Gardens
Great architecture, beautiful construction, intriguing details, made for photos. So there’re lots of photos...See for yourself:p
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ok Im a sucker for all these symmetries, just picked two for the blog]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[I swear my grandpa has something similar in his house]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pérez Art Museum Miami
or the ‘PAMM’
Modern art, pretty decent selection with a slight focus on South American art. There was a short film about Brazilian pop stars that was really impressive, but not sure if its permanent/also can't remember the name...Outside of the museum was beautiful though.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[lol my face...]
Wynwood, Wynwood Walls
Really hip area with lots to do. Cafes, shops, street markets, and GRAFFITIS  To me feels like Bushwich and Soho had a child with less people and more space. Definitely a great area for the younger crowd.
Wynwood Walls is a very well organized part of Wynwood filled with graffiti, reminding me of part Berlin Wall that was turned into a street art gallery (east side gallery? something along those lines). Although in my mind the essence of street art is that it is spontaneous and free and should not be caged in one place. At least I always appreciated some nice unexpected artful vandalism on some random streets.

Ok now hope you find this somewhat interesting. Enough babbling!
Until Next Time,

Super Bowl 2020: Miami’s ultimate guide for best places to eat, drink, and sightseeing
If you are in Miami, you already noticed the influx of tourists coming in, and all the energy surrounding the city due to the Super Bowl LIV happening this Sunday. After all, it’s been 10 years since the city hosted this enormous event – but before the game starts and Patrick Mahomes, with Kansas City Chiefs, takes Jimmy Garoppolo, and the San Francisco 49ers, there is a lot for you to do. For this reason, we created your Ultimate Miami Guide, because there is much more than just beaches in our Magic City. Ready to dive in?
The Cuban Experience
Nothing else screams more “Miami” than Cuban coffee and croquetas. If this is your first time in the city, you can’t miss the opportunity to try a Colada, the strongest of the Cuban coffees, served in a small plastic shot cup. Here is a guide to all the different types of Cuban coffee.
And to complement the coffee, get yourself some croquetas here:
Islas Canarias (Kendall)
La Carretta (Miami)
Sergio’s Restaurant (Miami)
Publix (local supermarket all over South Florida)
Tumblr media
Calle Ocho
Located in Little Havana, Miami’s vibrant Cuban heart, Calle Ocho is the home to Versailles, a historic venue visited by many celebrities and politicians. There, or in almost any other cafe in the neighboorhood, you can order your Cuban coffee in a walk-up window.
While in the area, don’t forget to visit Ball and Chain for live music and drinks, Azucar for some excellent ice cream/paletas, and watch locals discuss politics over dominoes at Maximo Gomez Park, entitled Domino Park by locals.
Versailles
Ball and chain
Azucar Ice Cream
Union Beer Store, if you’re into a wrestling-themed craft beer market
Domino Park
Wynwood
Wynwood, South Florida’s art hub, will host the Super Bowl Fan Fest at Wynwood Marketplace. However, if you are not into that, we still have a few recommendations before you move to our next selection, after all, you can’t visit Miami without spending at least a day in the neighborhood of colorful murals, tasty food, bars, and lounges.
Wynwood Walls: murals, and nearby galleries with works of emerging artists from all over the world.
Start at Coyo Taco, because yes to tacos any day, any time, and finish at the famous Salty Donut for a well-deserved treat.
Tumblr media
 Art/Museums/Gardens
Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science: you might have seen the massive aquarium oculus lens that’s become Instagram famous, but there is plenty to do in this first world-class science museum.
Perez Art Museum Miami: The PAMM is a contemporary art museum in downtown Miami, close to American Airlines Arena, home of the Miami Heat.
Vizcaya Museum & Gardens: This historic 10-acre landmark is covered with European architecture, marvelous gardens, and fountains overlooking Biscayne Bay.
Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden (South Miami): Enjoy 83 acres of rare tropical plants and garden exhibits.
Beer and cocktails
Because it’s always happy hour somewhere:
Veza Sur (Wynwood): A Latin craft-beer bar with an outdoor patio and live music.
Funky Buddha (Fort Lauderdale): One of the best breweries in Florida, don’t forget to order some yucca tots to go along with your beer.
Broken Shaker at Freehand Miami (Miami Beach): Located in the backyard of a boutique hostel, this cocktail bar is home to some of the most innovative mixologists.
Sugar (Brickell): Want to see stunning views of the Miami skyline? So head straight to the 40th floor of the East hotel.
Food halls
Luckily, we’ve been getting a lot more of those here in South Florida. We named just a few:
1-800-Lucky (Wynwood): A mini-Asian food hall with features that includes a hidden karaoke room and an outdoor area for live music and drinks.
Time Out Market Miami (Miami Beach): Twenty-one different food or drink options at your disposal, let’s leave it like this.
Politan Row Miami (Miami Design District): Previously known as St. Roch Market, this is another gourmet, chef-driven food hall where you can enjoy an eclectic mix of food options varying from Peruvian, and Vietnamese, to Southern Comfort.
Luna Park (Brickell): Formerly known as La Centrale, this Italian food hall located inside Brickell City Centre hosts 14 different eateries, five bars, a cooking school, a wine shop, and a coffee shop over three floors.
Casa Tua Cucina (Brickell): This is the other Italian food hall inside of Brickell City Centre. Ten different stations are ranging anywhere from pasta to pizza, meat and cheeses, seafood, and steak.
Tumblr media
Pizza
Mister 01 Extraordinary Pizza (Brickell, Wynwood, Miami Beach): Definitely try the Star Luca (the star-shaped, ricotta-filled pizza) or Claudio, another specialty pizza loaded with burrata stracciatella cheese and white truffle oil.
Harry’s Pizzeria (Design District, Coconut Grove): Crispy Polenta Fries and classic cheese pizza, you can’t go wrong.
Ironside (Little River): Bring your wine and enjoy cured meats and cheese boards before asking from one of four pies options: Fresca, Funghi, Capricciosa, Quattro Stagioni.
Crust (Miami River): Try the Fried Calamari or the Grilled Octopus before you build your Custom Pizza.
Pasta
Macchialina (Miami Beach): One of the best pasta restaurants in Miami.
Jaguar Sun (Brickell): You can try the Parker House Rolls and the Bucatini here.
Boia De (Miami): Mus tries: Tortellini in Brodo or the Ricotta Gnocchi.
Burgers
Ariete (Coconut Grove): The Chur Burger with two patties and the Ariete sauce for the win.
Lokal (Coconut Grove): One option here would be the Miami Heat Burger with spicy mayonnaise, sliced jack cheese, grilled onion, and yummy!
Kush (Wynwood): Get the Frita Burger, with melted wannabe Gruyere, guava jelly, potato six, and crispy bacon.
Casinos
While sports gambling is still not legal in Florida, there are a few places you can go for some poker or slot-machine action:
Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino (Hollywood): You might have noticed a huge guitar-shaped building when flying over Miami. That’s the new Guitar Hotel located inside Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood. Besides the casino and its incredible light show every night, there are also bars, lounges, pools, and cabanas if you’re not into the casino.
Gulfstream Park (Hallandale Beach): Live purebred racing Wednesday through Sunday, along with the slots and live poker games.

Grand Havana Inc. Expands Footprint Abroad
Tumblr media
MIAMI, FL, September 12, 2023 – Grand Havana Inc. (OTC Pink: GHAV) and its wholly owned subsidiaries, Grand Havana Masters, LLC, Grand Master Brands, LLC, and GH Hospitality Group, LLC is expanding sourcing and roasting operations abroad as part of a planned increase to green coffee and roasted coffee capacity.  The move will also give unfettered access to a significant B2B market for green coffee, and importantly to a B2C roasted coffee market that is growing exponentially as consumers abroad ramp up in-home and out-of-home coffee consumption.
At the heart of the project, GHAV has established a working alliance with SOLCAFE, S.A. a vertically integrated conglomerate based in Nicaragua with certified coffee farms, beneficios (processing mills), roasting facilities, and export operations.  The B2C (direct-to-consumer) opportunities consist of bolstering SOLCAFE’s existing roasted coffee brands such as “Sabor Nica” and “Café Sol” with Grand Havana coffee.  This move will consolidate product offerings for both SOLCAFE and GHAV to include instant coffee, ground American style coffee, and high-end espresso to appease every palate.
“Global coffee consumption will reach a record 170.2 million bags in the next coffee cycle, with a noteworthy increase in emerging and developing markets like Mexico, Colombia and Brazil.  Coffee culture in Central America has also never been stronger as Millennials and Gen-Z demand higher quality cups.”, notes GHAV Director Julio Sera.
The combined infrastructure of H&H Coffee Group (GHAV majority investor) and SOLCAFE, along with the logistical advantages of sourcing and roasting facilities in Central America will be the catalyst for GHAV to expand its footprint abroad and capitalize on rising coffee consumption.
“Grand Havana coffee, Sabor Nica and Café Sol will be available on every supermarket shelf, every restaurant menu and will be served at all of the finest coffee shops and kiosks throughout the Latin American region and beyond.  Our alliance with SOLCAFE and the Nicaraguan stakeholders that support us will take GHAV to the next level!”, stated ambitiously by GHAV Chairman Alain Piedra.
About Grand Havana, Inc. Grand Havana is a coffee company headquartered in Miami, Florida “The Capital of Espresso in the US.” Through our subsidiary, Grand Master Brands, LLC we are a global distributor of the finest green coffees that include not only commercial grade but also premium certified offerings such as Rainforest Alliance, organic, Fairtrade, UTZ, Bird Friendly among others.  Grand Havana roasted coffee products are distributed by Sysco, Ambassador Foods and Amazon. A Shot of Broadsides, Nightride(s) and Butterflies
Clayre Benzadon vectorizes poet Brian Clifton and artist David Bernardy’s “Nightride(s)” at the local Starbucks next to Deering Estate, an environmental, archaeological and historic preserve in Miami, FL, where she also vectorizes poet Nicole Calihan and artist Amy Meissner’s “Butterfly Farm”.
I couldn’t sleep last night.
This week had been the busiest for me in a long time, an especially productive one after a summer that felt like would never end. Fed up by many unresponsive online job applications, I went in person to turn in my resume to the manager of a coffee shop right near my house. I felt a lot less anxious than I had after submitting my cover letter to an independent bookstore, where the manager stared at me with hard eyes the whole time. I did not belong there. I nervously left, uncomfortable, awkward, and upset at myself.
Just in time though, I received a call from the coffee store. The interview was a breeze. I would begin to learn how to handle a luxury I greatly valued and consumed: coffee, and not simply coffee. Cuban coffee coladas, ristrettos, brews from all over the world.
“Nightride(s)” felt like the perfect kind of broadside that spoke to me at this point in time, the psychology behind the poem, how restlessness and night become personified: “The night runs its tongue / all over itself.”
Tumblr media
But I also thought Starbucks would be the perfect place to post the broadside. The decently sized public place would allow the opportunity for a broad audience to at least notice it. After all, most people who go to coffee shops are most likely tired and need a boost of energy, and the bright orange color does just that.
The Starbucks is a five-minute walk from Deering Estate, a beautiful historic site and park. My sister and I walked over there after I finished the last sip of my espresso. On our walk to the dock, the most symbolic thing occurred: I by chance had chosen to print out “Butterfly Farm”  before I left the house. I held it in my hands, looking for the best place to prop the broadside. Suddenly, butterflies appeared right in front of us, everywhere!
youtube
(I had taped the broadside on to the nearest pole close to the dock, but unfortunately, the wind almost blew it away-so I tried to fold it over until stayed on, although I don't know if it's still there! There weren’t that many people there [there usually aren't but it was suprising, considering it was a Saturday]...)
Clayre Benzadon, Broadsided Press’s Tumblr editor, is a recent graduate of Brandeis University with a B.A in Psychology and Creative Writing. She has been the editor-in-chief for Laurel Moon, the school’s oldest literary magazine, and has also been published by Rat’s Ass Review, The Acentos Review, Merrimack Review, and Triadae Magazine. In addition, she has written for her school magazine as well as Linkedin’s student platform. Last year, she had the opportunity of attending The Ashbery Home School, a week-long writing workshop/conference in Miami.
Note: These pictures were taken post-hurricane Irma. Thankfully, my area didn’t get hit badly but many of the areas originally filled with water are now empty, as in the Florida Keys, which was hit especially hard. There are fallen trees everywhere, and many natural sites, like Coral Reef park, which is a five-minute walk from my house, looks like a dilated tree-field, so I can only imagine what the Deering Estate area looks like now, with all the damage resulting from the aftermath.

Miami, FL
Day 2: Since much of Miami has a Cuban population, we opted to do a food tour of Little Havana to have an authentic, immersive experience. Merika was our Argentinian guide and she led us all around the absolutely charming and delicious Little Havana. It is home to many Cuban, Central & South American exiles and is a colorful center of Hispanic culture. We sampled empanadas, croquetas, Cuban sandwiches, guava pastries, yucca fries, black bean soup, Cuban coffee and amazing Mojitos. Merika brought us into a small gallery featuring reclaimed Cuban paintings (post Castro), a local produce stand, a jazz club, cigar shop and to the town square where locals gather to play dominoes and chess. Following the tour, we spent a little time in nearby Wynwood. The area is famous for graffiti covered streets ,art galleries, elaborate murals, interesting shops and of course great people watching!
