February Picks

And just like that another month is coming to a close. I can’t believe how fast it has gone by. I’ve continued watching some favorites from last month and am sad some have come to an end. Meanwhile a bunch of shows came back from their winter hiatus, so it was a lot of fun getting back into their story-lines again.

Be prepared for spoilers once again...

SANDITON

Masterpiece’s Sanditon ended this past Sunday, here in the states, and I am jumping on the campaign that we need a season 2! It can’t end like that with so many open ended story-lines (okay maybe just one or two, but still we deserve more). 

Who would have guessed that Esther would become one of my favorite characters in this series and that’s mainly thanks to her well written character development. From the “villain” in episode 1 she grew into so much more and was such a complex character. I really enjoyed watching her story unfold. I am SO HAPPY she married Babington and his speech to her about living side by side, knowing he loves her more and just wants to see her happy. Wow....Goals. I want to see this relationship progress even more (if that’s possible) with a season 2. Speaking of things I want to see: Will Sanditon be rebuilt and how long will it take? Will there be an alternative allowing Sidney to be with Charlotte? Major twist there as their relationship doesn’t end with a happily ever after (very un-Austen like for the main protagonists). When he returned at the end stopping Charlotte’s carriage, I seriously thought he would have said he broke up his engagement, but alas. The previous episode I really wanted them together (thanks to Sidney’s speech to Charlotte when he told her his ex-fiance left and how Charlotte makes him a better person *melts* and of course their dancing scene the episode prior was amazing). In the early parts of the season, while I knew Charlotte and Sidney would be a thing-eventually, I couldn’t help but have a soft spot for Young Stringer’s character and my appreciation never truly left. I felt he was paired well with Charlotte. Such a tragic ending for him. He wanted to better himself (much like the Parker brothers) but after his father’s death he no longer will. Throughout the series, I enjoyed Miss Lambe’s character, but I agree with many reviews that I was reading that her character was kind of dropped at the end. I’m curious what her reaction will be when she finds out about SIdney’s engagement...

Thank you again, Andrew Davies. I was not expecting to like this adaptation so much.    

ZOEY’S EXTRAORDINARY PLAYLIST

The best way to describe one of NBC’s latest shows is that I feel happy and in a good mood whenever I finish an episode. (And then I’m immediately upset that I have to wait a week for the next one. I watch them too fast.) I’ve heard many people compare it to Glee and while I could definitely understand that I keep getting drawn back to Abc’s short lived Eli Stone. There Eli (played by Jonny Lee Miller) could hear people around him sing and dance, which helped him solve upcoming law cases. In this show he was experiencing a brain tumor, but so far Zoey seems all clear. Instead, a freak accident while she is getting an MRI scan and listening to music, allows for her to hear people sing (and perform) their innermost feelings. There’s still some logistics to discover like what Zoey looks like when she watches these performances (does she move around or look like she’s just staring into the air. I might be thinking into this too much...I know). We just recently found out that sometimes she can speak to others as they are happening. Each time she hears someone sing she is meant to help them with something in their life. It could be a family member, co worker, friend, or like this past week her boss. While there’s one major problem (that she has to fix), there are often multiple songs in one episode which I really enjoy. The cast is also very strong, both musically and as actors. I can’t wait to see where the rest of the season is headed!

TO ALL THE BOYS P.S. I STILL LOVE YOU

When the first film was released on Netflix about 2 years ago, I was instantly a fan. I was unfamiliar with the book, but quickly added to my TBR list. (My to read list is extremely long, so I still haven’t gotten to it. Story of my life.) I really enjoyed watching Lara Jean experience the results of having her secretive love letters distributed to her past crushes. I was definitely Team Peter and Lara by the end of the film. They were adorable. The sequel was released earlier this month and I kind of forgot about it. It felt like we had been preparing for the sequel for a bit and then I must have been watching too much Disney Plus to miss the trailer. Watching P.S. I still love you, I just missed the original film. There were parts I liked and I was a big fan of John Ambrose (and of course Jordan Fisher because he’s great), but overall I felt like much didn’t happen. Also, Lara and Peter’s relationship kind of bothered me in parts. I understand that for both of them this was the first time they were in this kind of relationship and could feel awkward about certain things (like the Valentine’s singing-gram or writing an original poem). The main part I did like about them was towards the end when he arrived at the retirement home. I don’t say this often, but I have no want to re-watch it any time soon.   

VIOLETTA SEASON 1

Speaking of Disney Plus....

In a quick month and a half I have successfully watched ALL 80 episodes of season 1 of Violetta. I feel so accomplished and know the withdrawal will happen very soon. (I just finished last night and I’ve been listening to the music a lot recently). I’m so upset that season 2 has not be released on Disney Plus yet. I thought it would be by now because the streaming service has been up for a good amount of months and this show was so popular around the world. Unfortunately, I have not been lucky with my Google searches for when they’ll release it and no luck with YouTube either (no English caption options). I’ve been hearing that season 2 is really great because season 1 did a nice job of establishing these characters and now we get to see more story-lines. I will miss the students and teachers at the Studio as well the home-life at the Castillo’s house. Throughout 80 episodes it’s understandable to love and hate several characters as you’re with them for a good amount of time. For some people it was a roller coaster, but there were a good amount that I liked pretty consistently. I am a fan of Violetta and Leon and they had some super cute moments. I think it was about episode 35 where I truly felt like connection. When Tomas left the love triangle for a bit I actually grew to like him and would often joke how he never smiled and had a Tomas face. I really liked You Mix and the introduction of Frederico. Some great songs came out of that section like Ven y Canta and Tienes el Talento, but my favorite is definitely Ser Mejor. And of course, I will always have love for Pablo. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’m going to miss reading subtitles (I really do feel like I know more Spanish now). Definitely check out this show if you want something drama filled and funny at the same time. 

LEGACIES

I know I dedicated a whole post to Chris Wood’s return as Kai Parker on Legacies. (See the article here:https://talesofafangirlwithadvr.tumblr.com/post/190761328673/omg-legacies-2x12) But I still had to include it in this wrap up because once again Legacies is doing a great job this season. I was so excited to see it when it came back from the mid-season hiatus. Since the return of Wood it has gotten more of a TVD vibe than usual, which is great. I haven’t watched the last episode, but have seen a clip of Kai masquerading at the school. I am going to be very interested to see for how long he hangs around and how long it takes for them to discover him AND how Josie handles the evil inside of her. 

BROOKLYN NINE NINE

Thank goodness this show got renewed (and picked up from NBC). When it started a couple of weeks ago, I was reminded how much I missed it. I can’t get over that this is already the second season on NBC. As usual the hi-jinks of the Nine Nine have been entertaining to watch. The Jimmy Jab games were great. I loved how Hitchcock was so desperate to win that he was taking Scully’s array of pills. What an ending with Debbie! Did not think she could be capable of that. I can’t wait to see the outcome next episode. I’m so excited for a Santiago-Peralta baby. It was a great episode when they were hiding it from Charles and Adrian returned. I’ve seen the movie Memento and it is great! It was hilarious each time he was like, ‘I don’t know what that is’ and then saying ‘Finding Dory’ solved everything. I am so happy that this show was suggested for me to watch and fill my Office and Parks and Rec void. Whenever a new episode’s on the DVR I can’t wait to watch it.      

LEGENDS OF TOMORROW

And last, but certainly not least, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow has once again not disappointed me this season (I know it’s still early, but I’m optimistic). It started at the end of January following the events of Crisis and I liked how this season transitioned with all the changes (the major one being the introduction of Zari’s brother). I am really happy to see her again though and how she is having these flashes of her old life on board the Wave-rider. I can’t wait to see that reveal happen (especially because as of right now only Nate knows the ‘truth’). I love seeing Ava as a permanent part of the Legends crew and as stepping in as Captain when Sara was away. She is a great addition and I like how quirky she is since we first met her. Her and Sara are perfect. I also love Ray and Nora. Nora as a fairy godmother is fantastic. One of my favorite episodes was the one with the 80s dance. Her role in all of that was great and her realization with what she can provide for these kids. I feel like this is going to be the reason Ray leaves the Legends. I remember seeing Brandon Routh’s Instagram Post about leaving the show and this feels like the reason he will. I hope that isn’t for a while though because I am going to miss him a lot.

Trip to 70's in Brazil on Spotify

以前、Spotifyに1980年代ブラジルのプレイリスト「Melancolic Nostalgic 80s MPB」を公開しましたが、 今回は1970年代に絞った選曲でプレイリストを公開します。

1.Gonzaguinha「Vai Meu Povo」1978 このアルバムはSpotifyで初めて聴きました。 作曲者がゴンザギーニャになってますが、曲調的におそらくイヴァン・リンスが半分以上関わっているような形だと思います。 ネットでこのアルバムのクレジットを検索したところ、演奏者がミナス系ミュージシャン大勢とイヴァン・リンス、ジルソン・ペランゼッタ等個人的にかなりやばいメンツでした。フィジカルで持っていたい1枚ですね。 特にこの曲が良かったんですが、アルバム自体もエフェクティブで、ミナスっぽい（ミルトン的な）暗さ&怪しさもあり、良いです。

2.Jorge Ben「Apareceu Aparecida」1970 ジョルジ・ベンの最高傑作からの1曲。アルバム全体良いので、どの曲にするか迷いました。 このアルバムの演奏はトリオ・モコトーとのことで、グルーヴ感がたまりません。

3.Gilberto Gil「Retiros Espirituais」1975 ジルベルト・ジルの傑作バラード。カエターノのような旋律ですね。 こういう昔のクリック（メトロノーム）を使わないで段々テンポがはやくなっていっちゃう演奏、良いなぁと思います。 途中で出てくるマイナーメジャーセブンスはこの曲の肝だと思うのですが、「さち子」で使わせてもらいました。 最後に1オクターブ高くなるところがこの曲のハイライトです。

4.Edson Frederico「Bobeira」1975 ひたすらフェンダーローズ＋リズム隊のグルーヴが気持ち良い曲ですね。 プレイリスト後半に出てくるオルランヂーヴォという人の曲です。

5.Lo Borges「Clube Da Esquina Nº 2」1979 このブログではもう何度も紹介しているロー・ボルジェスの超名盤の超名曲です。 音楽の魔法。 人生で1番好きなアルバムなので、これを入れないわけにはいきません。

6.Antonio Carlos E Jocafi「Glorioso Santo Antonio」1973 呪文的なイントロからのグルーヴィーな演奏のギャップ、そして、微妙に怪しいピッチ感、全てのバランスが最高です。 バスドラとハイハットがすごく気持ちいい。 コード感が少ないとこれくらいピッチ（もしくはチューニング？）がずれていても気持ちよく聴けちゃうんだなぁ。

7.Edu Lobo「Zanzibar」1970 エドゥ・ロボって不思議な名曲多いんですよ。 「Casa Forte」とか「Upa Neguinho」とか、カバーされまくってます。 このアルバムはエルメート・パスコアルやアイアート・モレイラ等のQuarteto Novoが演奏しています。 エンディングのエルメートのウーリーのソロが熱いです。

8.Toninho Horta E Orquestra Fantasma「Diana」1979 ミナス系アーティストの代表的な存在、トニーニョ・オルタの、難解で不思議で、けど美しく、そして切ない曲。 ローズとアープが効果的な1曲です。 これが流れている間、ただただ音楽に浸っていたい。そんな曲です。

9.Beto Guedes「Feira Moderna」1978 ベト・ゲヂスはいろんな楽器を演奏するミナスのマルチ・プレイヤーです。 昔の曲ってほとんどSpotifyにないんですよね。 ここでは西欧的なロックの8ビートにベトの切ない曲が乗る代表曲を選びました。 ファズ・ギターのソロはベト本人によるもの。 「誰も知らない」なんかはこの感じに影響を受けました。

10.Sergio Mendes「Aquelas Coisas Todas」1979 セルジオ・メンデスによるトニーニョ・オルタの名曲カバー。 女性のダブル・ヴォーカルで、本人のヴァージョンよりポップな印象です。

11.Zizi Possi「Luz E Misterio」1979 ジジ・ポッシによるベト・ゲヂスの名曲カバー。 原曲が滅茶苦茶いいので、誰がやっても素晴らしい出来になりますね。 このアルバムはSpotifyで初めて聴きました。というか、ジジ・ポッシ自体そんなに持ってないです。 色んな人の作品に参加しているようで、本人の作品はそんなに聴かずとも声は色んなところで聴いてきました。

12.Simone「Valsa Rancho」1977 シモーネによるフランシス・ハイミの名曲カバー。 本人のヴァージョンも好きですが、ミナス臭の強いこっちのヴァージョンの方がもっと好きかもしれません。

13.Ivan Lins「Velas Icadas」1979 イヴァン・リンスも名曲が多すぎてどれにするかかなり迷いました。 この時期、ジルソン・ペランゼッタ（この曲ではエレピ担当）とイヴァン・リンスのコンビで名曲・名演を沢山残しました。

14.Carlos Lyra「Canaa」1975 ボサノヴァ期が有名なカルロス・リラですが、このアルバムが一番好きです。 シンセの音色が時代感を醸し出していて最高です。 落ち着く1曲。

15.Joao Donato「Acalanto Para Enganar Regina」1978 最近出たジョアン・ドナートの70年代の未発表音源集からの1曲です。 僕は4枚組ボックスで聴いたわけではありませんが、このアルバム自体は、ジョアン・ドナートが、ミルトン・ナシメントとかノヴェリみたいな雰囲気の音楽をやっているという、とても意外で珍しい音源集でした。 何度も繰り返し聴いています。 この曲の女声はクアルテート・エン・シーに聴こえますが、誰でしょう。 地味ながらも流していると沁みる一曲です。

16.Francis Hime「Luisa」1977 長い間、一緒にやっていたフランシス・ハイミとシコ・ブアルキのデュエット曲。 鳥肌無しには聴けません。 初めて聴く人には二人の声が区別が付かないと思いますが、出だしがシコ・ブアルキ、次のフレーズがフランシス・ハイミです（2番は逆になってます）。 ピアノとフルートだけのシンプルな演奏ですが、とても感動的な曲です。

17.Teti「Passaras, Passaras, Passaras」1979 テチが同じセアラ―のアーティスト、ファギネルとデュエットしている曲です。 ギターやアレンジを担当しているのはトニーニョ・オルタ。 この曲はちょっと日本の演歌のようなものを感じる部分もありますね。 最後の二人のハーモニーにいつも鳥肌が立ちます。

18.Milton Nascimento「Paixao E Fe」1978 ミナスのアーティストで最も有名なミルトン・ナシメント、どの曲にするかすごく悩みました。 これは同じミナスのアーティスト、タヴィーニョ・モウラの曲のカバーです。 演奏も、タヴィーニョ・モウラ本人の他、ネルソン・アンジェロ、ノヴェリ（ベース）、ベト・ゲヂス（バンドリン）等々、ミナス勢が多数参加しています。

19.Djavan「Serrado」1978 ジャヴァンはこの曲でも感じられるように、分かりやすくも洗練された楽曲を得意としていて、また、日本人の我々にとってもブラジル音楽に入っていきやすいきっかけになるアーティストの一人かなと思います。 いつの時代の作品を聴いてもジャヴァンらしいオリジナリティ、すなわち音楽的な意欲が感じられます。 今回は70年代縛りなので、この2ndアルバムの代表曲でもあり、個人的にも大好きな曲を選びました。シンプルにかっこいい曲ですね。

20.Quarteto Em Cy「Cavalo-Ferro」1972 女性4人姉妹のコーラスグループ。このアルバムが一番人気があるような気がします。 僕もこのアルバムが一番好きです。 ちょっと暗さがあって良いんです。 この曲は、メロディーの所為かもしれませんが、ブラジル北東部のノリに少し西欧的なリズムが混じっているように聞こえて面白いです。

21.Raimundo Fagner「Cebola Cortada」1977 ファギネルというダミ声のシンガーです。 最初はいまいち歌声に馴染めなかったんですが、聴いている内にむしろこの声を求めるようになっていました。 このアルバムはエルメート・パスコアルが参加しており、かなり混沌とした仕上がりになっています。

22.Gal Costa「De Onde Vem O Baiao」1978 同じバイーアのジルベルト・ジルの曲を歌うガル・コスタ。 バックにトニーニョ・オルタやヴァギネル・チゾ等のミナス系のアーティストが参加しているというのが個人的なポイントです。 パウリーニョ・ブラガのドラム（特にバスドラ）とシヴーカのアコーディオンが効果的な1曲です。

23.Novos Baianos「Misterio Do Planeta」1972 こちらもバイーア出身のアーティスト、ノヴォス・バイアノスの傑作2ndアルバムです。 ガット・ギターと歌だけのところからバンドが加わるアレンジを得意としていて、この曲もそこがすごく気持ちいいです。

24.Caetano Veloso「Julia / Moreno」1973 バイーア出身のアーティストで一番有名なカエターノ・ヴェローゾ、良い曲が多すぎてどれにするか迷いました。 個人的にカエターノは70年代前半よりも70年代後半、更に70年代後半よりも80年代の方が好きな曲が多いのですが、ここでは73年のアルバムよりちょっと変わった、そしてカエターノらしい1曲を選んでみました。 1フレーズ毎に音符が足されていく構成が面白いですね。

25.Vinicius De Moraes Con Maria Creuza Y Toquinho「Que Maravilha」1970 ヴィニシウスとトッキーニョのコンビがマリア・クレウザを迎えたアルゼンチンでのライブ盤です。 僕はアゴゴ（金属の打楽器）が大好きなのですが、アゴゴが入った曲というと一番初めにこれが思い浮かびます。

26.Elis & Tom「So Tinha De Ser Com Voce」 地味ながらもジョビンの作曲の面白さが際立つ1曲。 エレス・レジーナの力みのない歌と、セザール・カマルゴ・マリアーノのローズが心地良いですね。

27.Orlandivo「Onde Anda O Meu Amor」 アレンジや鍵盤でジョアン・ドナートが参加すると、とにかくグルーヴィーになります。 （Spotifyにはオリジナル・アルバムがなかったんですが）このアルバムを聴いてもらえると、それがよく分かると思います。

28.Tania Maria「Samba De Orly」1975 タニア・マリアによるカバーで、作曲者はトッキーニョだそう。 原曲にはこのヘンテコなメロディーのイントロがなかったので、このイントロはタニア・マリアのアイディアなのかもしれません。 このヴァージョンを聴いて、こういうヘンテコなイントロの曲が作りたい！と感化された僕は「ムード・ロマンティカ」という曲を作りました。

29.Doris Monteiro「Maita」1976 ドリス・モンテイロは印象が地味であんまり聴いているわけではないんですが、この曲はリズム・アレンジが印象的な爽やかなで好きな1曲です。 最後、歌の譜割を変えるアイディアが面白かったのか？よく分かりませんが歌いながら笑っちゃってます。こういう余裕欲しいなと思いました。

30.Anamaria E Mauricio「Fatal Fatal」1972 ソフト・ロックっぽいお洒落さのある曲です。彼らの1stアルバムは、よりポップで結構聴きました。 この2ndで一番好きな曲を選びました。 二人の歯切れの良い歌声とオルガンが印象的な曲。

31.Chico Buarque「Sinal Fechado」1974 シコ・ブアルキのカバー曲集から。 この暗さと緊張感がすごく好きで、選びました。

32.Antonio Carlos Jobim「Boto」1976 アントニオ・カルロス・ジョビンの70年代の作風をよく表している一曲だと思います。 こういった曲調は50～60年代のボサノヴァ期のジョビンの印象からはちょっと想像付きません。 ビリンバウの音で始まり、そこからバンドが入ってくる感じが溜まりません。 エドゥ・ロボの音楽なんかもそうなんですが、この不協和音を楽しめるようになるとブラジル音楽を聴く楽しみが一気に広がります。

33.Dory Caymmi「Nosso Homem Em Tres Pontas」1972 ミナス系のミュージシャンと作ったドリ・カイミの1stアルバムのラストを締める暗く重たくも壮大な1曲です。 歌詞はなく、スキャットで歌っているところが神々しいですね。 ヴァギネル・チゾのロータリーを使用していないオルガンも良い感じです。

34.Milton Nascimento & Lo Borges「Um Gosto De Sol」1972 後半の感じもものすごく好きなんですが、 この前半の「悟り」的な雰囲気はなんなんでしょう。 聴いていると涙が溢れ、違う時空に誘われるような、特別な一曲だと思います。

35.Sidney Miller「Línguas De Fogo」1974 ミナス系がバックの演奏をやっているといわれている一枚です。 詳しくは分かりませんが、音を聴いて、同時期のミナス系の作品にすごく似ていると思いました。

36.O Terco「Ponto Final」1975 ヴィニシウス・カントゥアリアやフラヴィオ・ヴェントゥリーニが在籍していたことで有名なロック・バンド。 プログレっぽさを感じる1曲です。

37.14 Bis「Tres Ranchos」1979 こちらもフラヴィオ・ヴェントゥリーニが在籍していたロック・バンドです。この曲を歌っているのはフラヴィオですね。 曲はタヴィーニョ・モウラとの共作曲のようです。

38.Guilherme Arantes「Estrelas」1979 プレイリストの最後は「僕たちの人生良かったね」って雰囲気？の、ギレルメ・アランチスの切ないバラードにしました。

Hoy se proyecta en el Centro Cultural Chacao el documental de Erika Corrales “Después del cierre… ¿Qué? una década sin RCTV”. La cita es a las 10 de la mañana con entrada libre. Caraota Digital se suma al homenaje de una televisora que marcó hitos con su programación: Desde el periodismo de vanguardia con el operativo de transmisión de la llegada del hombre a la luna en 1969 hasta las telenovelas de ruptura que propuso como renovación del género dramático. Esta es una revisión en retrospectiva del canal de Quinta Crespo. Porque después de todo, reza su eslogan, “un amigo es para siempre”…

A 10 años de su cierre, Fernando Delgado Oribio, entonces jefe de información del Observador Creole, cuenta el despliegue realizado por RCTV para transmitir al país las incidencias de la llegada del hombre a la Luna en julio de 1969.

Marina Baura, la del costumbrismo llanero de Doña Bárbara, recuerda la telenovela de ruptura con Natalia de 8 a 9, mientras que Raúl Amundaray, la quintaesencia del galán criollo, resume los valores que hicieron de RCTV la escuela del arte dramático en el país.

El balance del canal de Quinta Crespo no está completo sin la mención del primer mundial transmitido en Venezuela –México 70– y a través del cual el entonces niño Bobby Elie, luego futbolista de la Vinotinto, reafirmó su vocación al ver en un televisor blanco y negro a un desequilibrante Pelé.

Pero, los 54 años de historia también incluyen la decisión de Hugo Chávez de bajar la santamaría del canal –el 27 de mayo de 2007– y que queda reseñado por la periodista Erika Corrales en su documental Después del cierre…  ¿qué? una década sin RCTV

RCTV nos lleva a la Luna

Crónica del viaje a la Luna. Así titula su recuerdo Fernando Delgado Oribio. Se refiere a aquel momento histórico que RCTV llevó a Venezuela.

Entonces jefe de información del departamento de Prensa y jefe de redacción del noticiero estelar El Observador Creole, este veterano de la comunicación rememora para Caraota Digital el operativo periodístico que le correspondió coordinar. De esta forma también rinde homenaje a un canal del cual se cumplen 10 años de su cierre.

“Para la televisión venezolana esa semana del 16 al 24 de julio de 1969 fue técnica e históricamente una hazaña y un gran logro. Me complace mucho haber tenido una mínima participación pero, sobre todo, haber sido testigo participante”.

En 1960, el periodista Fernando Delgado Oribio coordinó el equipo de trabajo de RCTV que transmitió la llegada del hombre a la Luna…

El veterano periodista dice que la transmisión del viaje a la Luna constituyó un acontecimiento inédito y que RCTV lo entendió en esa misma dimensión: “La NASA había venido informando sobre los preparativos y el mundo entero estaba pendiente, pues los lanzamientos de cohetes espaciales previos al Apolo 11 rumbo a la Luna habían ganado sintonía universal. Radio Caracas Televisión era para la fecha el canal más sintonizado en competencia con Televisa, posteriormente Venevisión, y el Canal 5, que era del Estado y de programación cultural”.

Delgado Oribio cuenta que él había ingresado a RCTV diez años antes. “Ocurrió después de haber concursado y ganado en la agencia de noticias Venezuela Press, asesorado por el inolvidable maestro Kotepa Delgado, un puesto de reportero en el diario La Razón a mediados de 1958. En el periódico permanecí unos 10 meses. Pero la radio y la televisión ganaron mi interés y no dudé en buscar allí una oportunidad”.

En RCTV comenzó como auxiliar de redacción bajo la dirección de maestros como Rafael Velásquez y Gilberto Alcalá. Ya para 1969 llevaba las riendas del noticiero. “Como periodista tenía experiencia en lanzamientos de cohetes espaciales, pues mi amigo Guy Farmer, agregado de prensa de la embajada de Estados Unidos, me invitaba siempre y era asiduo visitante a Cabo Cañaveral o Cabo Kennedy”.

De manera que con esos antecedentes, tenía una asignación especial como asesor, tanto de los técnicos cerebros de las imágenes como de los locutores que guiaban la narración en pantalla: “RCTV había transmitido todas las etapas previas: el lanzamiento del Apolo 11 con la cápsula Eagle había sido el miércoles 16 de julio con total sintonía, pues por primera vez los tres tripulantes –Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin y Michael Collins– iban a descender de la cápsula en suelo lunar”.

Los departamentos de Prensa y Técnico de RCTV trabajaron activamente para la transmisión con el propósito de coordinar la programación especial de estos acontecimientos, que incluían el lanzamiento, el alunizaje, la permanencia en la luna, el descenso de los tripulantes, la caminata y el despegue de regreso.

De acuerdo con Delgado Oribio, la dirección del canal realizó elevadas inversiones para asegurar derechos e instalar torres satelitales muy especiales que permitieran captar las señales y retransmitirlas.

“La secuencia fue la siguiente: el miércoles 16 de julio a media mañana, el cohete de la misión Apolo 11, impulsor de la cápsula Eagle, arrancó de Cabo Cañaveral en Florida con total sintonía nacional. La emoción crecía en la medida en que el cohete se elevaba mostrándose en pantalla las llamaradas y los desprendimientos de las diversas fases. El domingo siguiente, 20 de julio de 1969, la cápsula espacial se posó sobre la superficie de la Luna. Fueron cuatro días de viaje y giros sobre la zona escogida para el alunizaje. Luego de posarse, vimos en pantalla a los tres tripulantes acostumbrándose a su nueva posición en territorio lunar. A los dos días y con transmisiones continuas de la cápsula sobre el suelo lunar, el martes 22 de julio de 1969, fecha que pasó a la historia, Neil Armstrong y Edwin Aldrin, luciendo unos uniformes blancos y esponjosos y máscaras impresionantes, abrieron la portezuela de la cápsula y mientras el mundo veía con asombro y regocijo, descendieron la blanca escalerilla y se posaron sobre aquella superficie que parecía polvorosa y dieron los primeros pasos del hombre sobre la superficie del satélite de la Tierra… Allí las recordadas palabras de Armstrong: ´Un pequeño paso para el hombre y un gran salto para la humanidad”.

Venezuela observó por las pantallas de RCTV que tres hombres permanecieron en la Luna durante dos días. “Los vimos mientras transcurrían comiendo y haciendo su labor de investigación. Y caminando por los alrededores tomando gráficas y recogiendo muestras del suelo lunar. Son universales las fotografías de Armstrong con su atuendo blanco y su gran máscara de pie frente a la bandera de las barras y las estrellas. O la otra de la huella de su pie en el suelo lunar en el `mar de la Tranquilidad´”…

Así, RCTV dictaba cátedra de periodismo audiovisual con este operativo, una lección que aún hoy es referencia y una página impecable de trabajo de la televisión venezolana: “El retorno a la Tierra no se hizo esperar y el jueves 24 de julio, día festivo en Venezuela cuya acostumbrada cadena nacional no perturbó la transmisión, la cápsula del Apolo 11 con sus tres tripulantes descendía en el Océano Pacifico y flotó. Pudimos ver cómo era izada y el momento histórico en que los tres hombres salían y saludaban”.

Otra forma de contar la telenovela

En telenovelas, el canal de Quinta Crespo escribió páginas memorables. En ocasión de recordarse el cierre, habla la actriz de las actrices, Marina Baura. Habla el galán de los galanes, Raúl Amundaray. Ambos actores fueron –juntos y separados– cabeza de elencos que elevaron el oficio a otro nivel.

Con Amundaray, RCTV impuso el formato de una hora diaria de telenovela. Era 1965. Lo recuerda quien personificara, con su personaje Albertico Limonta en El derecho de nacer. La telenovela del cubano Félix B. Caignet estuvo más de dos años con el rating a su favor. Un récord que solo es superado por el mismo canal en 1992 cuando se inicia la transmisión de la telenovela política e hiperrealista Por Estas Calles, escrita en su primera etapa por Ibsen Martínez.

“RCTV es la gran escuela de la televisión venezolana”, opina Amundaray: “Sigue siendo muy doloroso su cierre porque es la casa donde nos hicimos todos. Fue un golpe muy duro para la industria del país”.

Concretamente, Raúl Amundaray comenzó a protagonizar en el año 1964. Lo hizo con Historia de tres hermanas, al lado de Doris Wells, Eva Moreno y Eva Blanco. Su primer crédito lo mantuvo durante los siguientes 21 años, cuando en 1985 cierra el ciclo con Cristal, al lado de Lupita Ferrer. Broche de oro.

“Yo tengo los más gratos recuerdos de RCTV. Me abrió las puertas de la televisión. Los señores Phelps (fundadores) fueron mis padrinos profesionales, es gente que perdura en mis sentimientos y en mi corazón. Y creo que Venezuela debe hacerle un reconocimiento de verdad desinteresado por la colaboración, por todo lo que aportaron a la radio y a la televisión de Venezuela. En RCTV había mística, excelencia y profesionalismo. El cierre fue un duelo nacional”.

Su coestrella, Marina Barina, comenzó a trabajar en RCTV en 1970. Venía de Venevisión. Pero fue en el canal del león donde se descubrió actriz de otro calibre. Allí hizo su transición de la dama joven a la primera actriz. Aquel año, era anunciada como Cristina, al lado de Amundaray, un galán probado. También estaba apuntada en el elenco la mítica María Félix.

RCTV repasó la literatura venezolana de Rómulo Gallegos y fue Baura una de las actrices seleccionadas para promover la cultura desde la televisión. El canal se trasladó hasta e estado Apure para contar las costumbres del llano con Doña Bárbara (1975) y viajó al Zulia para recrear el mapa étnico de la región petrolera en Sobre la misma tierra (1976).

Excluido por un gobierno que dice promover la inclusión, también abordó a grandes de la literatura como el novelista ruso León Tolstoi en Resurrección (1977). En fin. RCTV hizo de ella un talento clave en la llamada telenovela cultural –o social– con Natalia de 8 a 9, en 1980. Hoy retirada, responde para Caraota Digital mientras consiente a uno de sus nietos.

“Con Natalia de 8 a 9, la mujer venezolana dio muestras de su independencia”, comenta Baura: “La mujer comprobó que su vida no termina con un divorcio”.

Esa autonomía no solo quedaba en personajes dramáticos, sino también en la postura empresarial que RCTV mantuvo frente a la censura impuesta por el alto gobierno bolivariano.

Natalia de 8 a 9 constituyó parte de la llamada telenovela cultural, dedicada a las preocupaciones de la familia. Marina Baura y Gustavo Rodríguez fueron los protagonistas…

Marina Baura dice que, lamentablemente, no se encontraba en el país cuando ocurrió el cierre. Sin embargo, no olvida las posibilidades que tuvo de relatar la historia del mundo femenino desde la perspectiva del autor José Ignacio Cabrujas. Sabe que RCTV instauró un texto dramático de realidad, en el cual la familia pasaba a ser el centro de las preocupaciones.

“Con esas telenovelas fue inspirador darse cuenta de que las familias pueden rehacer sus vidas, que las mujeres pueden echar pa´lante, que no se amilanan”.

Transmite el primer mundial, México 70

Fue el primero que se vio en Venezuela. Era junio. Bobby Elie, de 11 años de edad, se convertiría nueve años más tarde en parte de la selección de jugadores de la Vinotinto. Sin embargo, en aquel momento era solo un desesperado preadolescente que junto con su morocho Patrick llegaba del colegio Santiago Apóstol, en La Guaira, para mover la perilla del televisor Telefunken, de tecnología avanzada, sintonizar la pantalla en blanco y negro de RCTV y celebrar a un invicto Pelé.

“Mi papá trabajó por cincuenta años en Venevisión. Era el responsable de transmisión en La Guaira. De manera que él debía estar pendiente de si se caía la señal o no. Pero esos días, mi papá se olvidó de todo y se sentó a ver RCTV”.

Cuenta Elie que las competencias deportivas se producían durante las tardes y que uno de los narradores era Pedro Zárraga, de una calidad que define de “extraordinaria”.

RCTV hacía nuevamente historia al llevar la fiesta del fútbol a las casas del país. Elie admite que su vocación quedó reafirmada al ver a los jugadores de calidad que, como los de Brasil (Pelé, Félix, Brito, Clodoaldo, Tostáo, Gérson) podían llevar todos el número 10. “Para mi es el mejor mundial que se ha celebrado, precisamente por el talento de los futbolistas, nadie se lesionó ni hubo expulsiones”.

El seleccionado de Brasil, con Pelé a la cabeza, se tituló campeón de México 70. Fue el primer mundial que transmitía un canal venezolano…

La emotividad del mundial provocó que Venezuela se enamorara para siempre del equipo brasileño y se emocionara con el gol número 1000 de Pelé, considerado por muchos como el mejor futbolista del planeta: “RCTV marcaba su identidad en los venezolanos y le daba a Brasil la afición venezolana con la cual todavía cuenta”.

El canal se esmeró, lo recuerda Bobby Elie, en reseñar detalles de cada juego, de cada equipo. Por eso, la final entre Brasil e Italia generó una algarabía venezolana, como si se tratara del equipo local. Ambas delegaciones, la europea y la suramericana, disputaban su tercer título. Cualquiera se llevaría la copa Jules Rimet, la última en entregarse antes de, mundial siguiente, llamarse Copa Fifa.

Desde RCTV el grito de gol se escuchó con el triunfo definitivo de Brasil…

Erika Corrales cuenta el cierre en un documental

“Chávez me dio muchos golpes”, reprocha la experimentada periodista Erika Corrales, autora de Después del cierre… ¿Qué? una década sin RCTV.  Con su queja lamento viaja en retrospectiva hasta el año 1992, cuando se estrenaba como reportera en RCR, una de las empresas del grupo 1BC, el emporio donde también estaba RCTV.

“Ese primer golpe fue horrible. Pasé calamidades para llegar a la emisora en El Paraíso. Tenía un carro zhephyr y se me accidentó. El radiador se rompió, recalentó y cerca de la comandancia comienza a fallar. En la plaza Madariaga no quiso andar más, entonces lo dejé botado y pedí una cola para llegar al trabajo”.

Manejando en contrasentido por la avenida Páez, una muy joven Érika Corrales, egresada de la universidad Católica Andrés Bello, sabía que estaba frente a un hecho noticioso sin precedentes: “Pude reportear lo que significó ese golpe de estado del 27 de noviembre“.

¿Qué significó el golpe de Hugo Chávez? “Para mí fue el comienzo del principio del fin del país, fue la génesis de todo lo que estamos viviendo. Con aquel hecho me di cuenta de que ese señor que se lanzó a la presidencia no era el indicado para presidir los destinos del país”.

El segundo golpe llegó con el cierre del canal, el 27 de mayo de 2007: “Me afectó en todos los aspectos. En lo personal, porque entré en estado de depresión, en luto. Estaba en negación. Me decía ´esto no está pasando´. A mí se me subió la tensión y terminé en servicios médicos. Mis hijos Ana Paola y Jorge Ignacio veían a una madre deprimida. En lo profesional sentí que me quitaban el mantel de la mesa con toda la vajilla servida. Yo empecé como redactora en RCTV, luego fui reportera de trabajos especiales, conductora de programas como Cita con las estrellas, En caliente, Habla la calle, me gané el premio Monseñor Pellín. Había hecho mi trayectoria”.

El tercer golpe fue el 23 de enero de 2010 cuando saca a RCTV del cable: “Y lo hizo a la medianoche del día que se celebra la democracia”, recrimina la documentalista “Ese fue el más fuerte porque es apagarte la luz sin esperanza alguna”.

Con tanto atropello sobre sí, la periodista aceptó el camino de escribir una suerte de memorias para Libros El Nacional, que estará a la venta durante la primera quincena de junio de 2017.

Talento artístico y directivos de RCTV se reunieron el día del cierre para despedir, bajo protesta a la medida de Hugo Chávez, más de 50 años de fidelidad de la audiencia venezolana…

“La idea era reflejar lo que yo padecí, lo que viví y cerrar mi ciclo emocional. Todo este tiempo he vivido sufriendo por el cierre de RCTV. En estos últimos 10 años, no había hablado después de la rabia que tengo por dentro. Y este documental fue mi manera de hacer catarsis y mi homenaje. Pero no podía hacerlo solo con mis vivencias, de modo que me fui a los archivos del canal, recuperé en el archivo los 20 años que viví en el canal, ratifiqué que gran parte de mi mejor vida está en esos sótanos de RCTV”

¿Qué pretendes con este documental? “Quiero que los chamos de hoy en día se enteren que aquí en Venezuela hubo prensa libre, que se enteren que hubo otra Venezuela y no solo ésta que ha construido este régimen, que sí se podía hacer un periodismo excelente, sin represalias y crítico. A mí me ponen a la madre Teresa de Calcuta en frente y tengo que cuestionarla porque el periodista siempre tiene  que estar en la acera del frente”.

La reflexión de Érika Corrales allana el camino para deslizar sus opiniones hasta el presente: “En Venezuela se ha intentado implantar una hegemonía comunicacional. Es lo que ha querido el régimen, pero no ha podido. Esta forma de gobierno ha ido reduciendo espacios críticos pero aumentando los de propaganda, aunque no lo ha logrado, gracias al empeño de muchos periodistas y el surgimiento de las alternativas digitales. Los medios de la revolución nunca han tenido audiencia. Quiero ir las universidades, peregrinar debajo del brazo con mi documental de una hora y quince minutos, ir a los países que me inviten. Quiero decirle al mundo que RCTV sigue siendo el canal de la Venezuela libre”.

Hell Yeah, This Film Festival Just Held Its Own Viking Funeral in a Freaking Swamp

Saint Jude the Apostle is the Patron Saint of lost causes, desperate situations, and those of us who need a compassionate helping hand. Once upon a time, Saint Jude was only rarely called upon, for fear of accidentally invoking the similarly-named Judas Iscariot, Christ's ultimate betrayer. As such, Saint Jude is a little more eager and willing to provide assistance than some of the others.

Dear Saint Jude was the official saint of the velorio (Spanish for "wake") and funeral for Borscht Diez, the film festival's tenth edition—it seems there was nothing that could've saved Borscht. Borscht Diez (Spanish for "ten") started the way many lives end: with a funeral, eulogy, and a cleansing fire.

Maspons Funeral Home in Coral Gables, like most funeral homes, is freezing, and each of the space's chilly salons was transformed into an exhibition. One room was left dark and glowing, illuminated with altars by artists Sierra Grace and Amanda Ortega, all plastic candles, glass kittens, and dead iPhones. In another room, Borscht co-founder Jillian Mayer, addressing the potentiality of her future in the spectral realm, scrawled onto a sheet tacked to the wall: "If I die in the next 6 weeks, I'll come back and move this computer from here to here as a sign." The "heres" referred to two tables below. A laptop sat on one's surface, looping a video of the ocean, nature's majestic symbol of cyclicality.

Deon Rubi's ghost floated in a corner, a bunch of smiling yellow balloons underneath a massive swath of packing plastic that would eventually miraculously float away, grazing and covering guests for the duration of the night. The coffin-selection room's open, pillowy casket became the setting for a depressing number of selfies, but that was probably the point, and if death can't be a meme in 2017, nothing can.

Dracula is without a doubt one of Miami's favorite bands. They are beautiful and strange, and sound like birds singing hymns. Dorys Bello and Eli Oviedo sat across from each other, gazing into each other's eyes, Oviedo on guitar, singing covers of folk songs and Spanish-language ballads. It seems no matter where they play, the audience ends up cross-legged on the floor, teary-eyed and nostalgic; when they played at the velorio, a hush crept over the crowd and you remembered you were, in fact, in a funeral home. Films were screened throughout: Eddy Jellyfish's All the Saints, an homage to Saints and their Yoruba counterparts, the Orishas; the "Alma Victoria Wright 24-11-96 FUNERAL SERVICE" scene from Michael Arcos' VHS Angel Eyes 2: JLo's Inner Most Secrets; and "Ritual," a scene depicting a Santeria rite from Monica Peña's film, Hearts of Palm. Arcos' VHS featured the weeping reactions at a real mid-90s funeral and was equally heartbreaking and creepy; "Ritual," if you knew what was to come later in the evening, felt like a premonitory precursor.

With Ammy Garcia's GIF-y visuals of anime angels and the ever-present Borscht ouroboros (a gator eating a snake eating a gator eating a snake) as a backdrop, the Borscht crew bid their fair festival farewell. They'd stocked a makeshift wooden coffin with hard drives containing, ostensibly, all of their movies. "Some of you will think this is a good thing," said Mayer. "Some of you will think this is a bad thing. Some of you will just think it's a thing." Roses were laid upon the coffin as it was carried out to a hearse.

We were led by motorcade, to a woody, swampy location to burn it all. The ritual took place in a glen just off the road and close to the turnpike, in an area that wouldn't quite be designated the proper Everglades. But all of Miami was once Everglades, and it's testament to South Florida's history that, if you veer off the beaten path even a little, you'll get muddy. Through puddles and still-unpaved swampland we traversed, arriving at Borscht's funeral pyre: a screen reading "In Loving Memory," playing every Borscht film on high speed, two ladders on either side.

The coffin was placed before the screen as Roman candles were passed out to the crowd, with instructions to shoot it at the pyre. There were more fireworks hidden on the death altar, because as the green Roman candle orbs finally hit the screen, the fire exploded into fountains of rainbow sparks, the ladders melting and the smoke rising toward the treetops. This was a proper Viking funeral, as many took place on burning pyres later covered with dirt, without a boat set out to sea.

It's surreal to watch a movie up in flames, recalling the days when film was made of highly flammable celluloid. The fire was contained, never spreading to nearby trees. It had rained earlier, a sudden and unseasonable downpour, as if by lucky miracle… as if Borscht was watching over us all.
