10 Intersting books on Colombia
10 Intersting books on Colombia
1.One Hundred Years of Solitude“ by Gabriel García Márquez
“One Hundred Years of Solitude is a 1967 novel by Colombian author Gabriel García Márquez that tells the multi-generational story of the Buendía family, whose patriarch, José Arcadio Buendía, founded the town of Macondo. The novel is often cited as one of the supreme achievements in world literature” (wikapieda)
2. Love in the Time of Cholera Gabriel García Márquez
“Love in the Time of Cholera is a novel written in Spanish by Colombian Nobel Prize-winning author Gabriel García Márquez and published in 1985. Edith Grossman's English translation was published by Alfred A. Knopf in 1988.” (wikapeda)
3.Delirium by Laura Resepo
“Delirium is a novel by Colombian author Laura Restrepo. With this book, Restrepo won the prestigious Premio Alfaguara de Novela in 2004. Natasha Wimmer's English translation was published in 2007.Delirium tells the story of Agustina, a beautiful woman who suffers a breakdown. Her husband, who recently returned home to Bogotá, is determined to rescue “ (wikipedia)
4.Chronicle of a Death Foretold Novel by Gabriel García Márquez
“Inspired by an actual incident in 1951 in Sucre, Colombia, Chronicle of a Death Foretold tells the story of a series of events leading up to the murder of Santiago Nasar. Thus, Márquez interviews people in the town 27 years after the event in an attempt to determine how the crime took place. In the end, he concludes that everyone knew what was going to happen; however, no one did anything to stop it. A short and easy read, this novel is a perfect example of how expertly Márquez can weave a story.” (Gringa Journies)
5.The Armies Book by Evelio Rosero
“The Armies is told from Ismael’s point of view, a retired schoolteacher who lives in a small Colombian town. While the book begins with descriptions of idyllic country days, all of this comes to an abrupt halt when army forces enter the village. During the subsequent descent into chaos, Ismael’s wife goes missing, and the second half of the book focuses on his search to find her.” (Gringa Journies)
6.  Return to the Dark Valley by Santiago Gamboa
“In this dark yet intriguing story, readers are introduced to a cast of a poet, a priest, and a diplomat as we follow their separate narratives. Later, they all come together to travel back to Colombia to right some of the wrongs experienced by Manuela. Although they return to a peaceful Colombia, each character is doubtful that this time of goodness will last. This novel is undoubtedly moving, but you may need a thick skin to get through some of the more heartbreaking moments”(Gringa Journies)
7. Reputations by Juan Gabriel Vásquez
“In Reputations, readers follow Javier Mallarino, a legendary political cartoonist in Bogotá. After many years with a successful career, we find Mallarino conscience-stricken over a decision he made years in the past. The novel explores the past, reputations of public personas, and the relationship between memory and truth”(Gringa Journies)
8. Colombia a Comedy of Errors by Victoria Kellaway and Sergio J Lievano
“This illustrated book brims with humor while exploring what it means to be Colombian. If you don’t know anything about Colombia, this is a great place to start your lessons. Moreover, at only 150 pages, you could quickly plow through this book on your flight to Colombia. Although it’s written from the perspective of anthropological analysis, it also provides quite the laugh!”(Gringa Journies)
9. Misspelled Paradise: A Year in a Reinvented Colombia by Bryanna Plog
“Misspelled Paradise follows Bryanna Plog during a year spent teaching English just outside of Cartagena. She provides an honest perspective on teaching abroad as well as the ex-pat experience in contemporary Colombia. If you’re considering following in Plog’s footsteps, I would highly recommend giving this book a read!”(Gringa Journies)
10. Fruit of the Drunken Tree by Ingrid Rojas Contreras
“Fruit of the Drunken Tree tells the story of Chula Santiago, a young girl living in a gated community in Bogotá, and Petrona, the Santiago family’s live-in maid. Set in the 1990s, Chula and Petrona are growing up during a time of extreme violence in Colombia, when kidnappings and car bombs were frequent occurrences. Surprisingly, these two girls from different sides of the tracks forge an unlikely friendship. Both will have to make difficult decisions to protect their loved ones.”(Gringa Journies)

Read the full article

Bacolod City to be liberated from Covid-19: mayor
#PHnews: Bacolod City to be liberated from Covid-19: mayor
BACOLOD CITY – Mayor Evelio Leonardia said this city will soon be liberated from the scourge of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) and has become “part of history” in the rollout of the vaccination program in Western Visayas on Friday.
“It is significant and meaningful that the first Covid-19 case in Western Visayas was recorded in Bacolod City. So, let it also be put on record and let it be part of history that the first vaccination also happened here,” he said.
Leonardia and Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran led city officials in witnessing the ceremonial vaccination program held at the Bacolod Government Center.
Six medical front-liners in Bacolod were the first to be vaccinated with the Sinovac Biotech vaccine in the region.
“We are on the road to deliverance,” Leonardia said, adding that there is no longer a reason for the public to doubt the Sinovac vaccine after the medical professionals had themselves vaccinated.
The mayor said that most people in Bacolod are adopting a “wait and see” attitude, but after seeing the doctors took part in the rollout of the vaccination program of the city, he believed that more are expected to also have themselves inoculated.
On Friday morning, some 6,270 vials of the Sinovac vaccine arrived at the Bacolod-Silay Airport in Silay City and were brought to the cold room at the Bacolod Government Center Annex Building.
The supply is intended for 3,135 healthcare workers of two Covid-19 referral hospitals in Bacolod - Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital and Dr. Pablo O. Torre Memorial Hospital (Riverside Medical Center).
It is the first batch of vaccines to arrive in Bacolod, which is part of the 600,000 doses donated by China to the Philippines.
Those who were vaccinated were Dr. Miguel Sarabia, president of Negros Occidental Medical Society, and wife Valerie Villarosa- Sarabia, who is a registered nurse, as well as Dr. Hector Gayares Jr., chief executive officer of Adventist International Healthcare System Philippines and medical volunteer of Bacolod City Emergency Operations Center; Dr. Dolores Rommela Tiples-Ruiz, infectious diseases specialist and president of Philippine Society for Microbiology and Infectious Diseases-Negros Occidental Chapter; Dr. Radela Yvonne Ramos-Cortes, an allergologist; and Dr. Carlos Javier Primicias Jr., a pediatrician.
On Thursday, Bacolod recorded no new case and zero death. It has a total of 5,838 confirmed cases, but only 69 are active. Some 5,581 have recovered and 188 deaths. (PNA)

6 Bacolod medical front-liners first to get Sinovac shots in WV
#PHnews: 6 Bacolod medical front-liners first to get Sinovac shots in WV
BACOLOD CITY – Six medical front-liners in this city were the first to be inoculated against the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) in Western Visayas on Friday.
In a ceremonial vaccination held at the Bacolod Government Center, five doctors and a nurse received the initial doses of Sinovac Biotech vaccine, which were part of the 6,270 vials allocated by the Department of Health to two hospitals in the city that arrived just a couple of hours earlier at past 9 a.m.
City officials led by Mayor Evelio Leonardia and Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran witnessed the historic event.
“It’s a great day for Negros and for Bacolod that the vaccines have finally arrived,” Dr. Miguel Sarabia, president of the Negros Occidental Medical Society, said after taking the first shot administered by Dr. Edwin Miraflor, officer-in-charge of the City Health Office.
“We know that vaccines are the most effective way to stop the Covid-19 pandemic and to stop future epidemics. With the vaccination today, we would like to show to the public that we, your doctors, believe that the vaccine is safe, that is good for our body to be vaccinated so that we can go ‘back to normal’ again,” he added.
Sarabia, an ophthalmologist, took the vaccine together with his wife Valerie Villarosa- Sarabia, who is a registered nurse.
“Why did I have myself vaccinated? I’m a front-liner, I’m 59 years old. I cannot guarantee safety for myself and my patients all the time. The Sinovac vaccine has a 100 percent safety rate for serious Covid-19. It is a very good vaccine, with 100 percent efficacy…This one is a new vaccine for a very deadly virus. We are glad to be the first people (in Bacolod) to receive this gift of life,” he added.
Also vaccinated were Dr. Hector Gayares Jr., chief executive officer of Adventist International Healthcare System Philippines and medical volunteer of Bacolod City Emergency Operations Center; Dr. Dolores Rommela Tiples-Ruiz, infectious diseases specialist and president of Philippine Society for Microbiology and Infectious Diseases-Negros Occidental Chapter; Dr. Radela Yvonne Ramos-Cortes, an allergologist; and Dr. Carlos Javier Primicias Jr., a pediatrician.
Gayares said he took Sinovac as protection against Covid-19 because “it is the safest for me”.
“It’s unattenuated. It’s a dead virus. It has maintained its spike protein. It does not interfere with any other mechanism in my body except to stimulate the immune system to produce anti-bodies. That’s the normal, traditional way of making vaccines and letting the vaccines work in you, and Sinovac used that kind of technology,” he added.
Tiples-Ruiz pointed out that if a person has a choice, the brand of vaccine would matter in deciding to be vaccinated.
“But remember, we have an increase in demand and supply is not enough for everybody. The more people that are inoculated as soon as possible the better. We need to see this as a collective effort to address the Covid-19 pandemic. The safety of the vaccines is assured and the efficacy helps us,” she said.
Ramos-Cortes said that in a way, the brand matters in choosing what vaccine to take, but in times of a pandemic, the choice would be to be vaccinated as early as possible, and anyone should grab the chance to be vaccinated.
“I have no hypertension and I don’t have diabetes so I’m really okay with Sinovac. I would go for it because it’s the first vaccine that’s available for me so I chose to take it,” she said. (PNA)

PAL opens Antique-Clark flight
SAN JOSE DE BUENAVISTA, Antique – Antique Governor Rhodora Cadiao on Monday announced that Philippine Airlines (PAL) has taken interest to service the province, opening its Antique-Clark maiden flight on October 28.
Cadiao said Senator Loren Legarda told her of the news during the latter’s visit to the province last week.
Cadiao said she will go to Manila in the next few days and visit the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) and the Department of Transportation (DOTr).
In a media interview, Cadiao said Legarda told her that PAL management has already given its go-signal to fly Antique-Clark and vice versa.
She said the final schedule of PAL's maiden flight will be known after her meeting with DOTr Secretary Arthur Tugade and CAAP officials.
She said she previously talked with Tugade over the phone and asked the DOTr chief to defer for a month the maiden flight because they still have to do ground servicing and put some personnel at the Evelio B. Javier Airport in San Jose de Buenavista.
“We’ll just have to prepare for the October 28 maiden flight or if not before Christmastime,” Cadiao said.
Cadiao said PAL might start to service Antique to Clark twice weekly and subsequently increase it to four flights per week with its new 86-seater Bombardier Q400 NG aircraft.
The airport in Antique has not been in operation for several years already due to the lack of passengers flying Antique to Manila. The last one was during the time of former governor Salvacion Zaldivar-Perez.
Meanwhile, Cadiao said she is also going to meet with the owner of Montenegro Lines in Manila to talk about the possibility of opening operations from the Lipata Port to Batangas and vice versa.
Antiquenos travel through roll-on/roll-off (RORO) ships in Caticlan Port in Aklan province to Batangas.
“The operation of the airline and RORO could be big things to dream for Antique but we have to prepare for it,” Cadiao said. (PNA)
