So now we have a working theory without even reaching the GoodWill Superstore in Wilsonville. Kimmer then gets our mechanic on the phone who confirms she’s got a pretty solid theory that fits the facts so far. He tells her to hit one of the local automotive stores and pick up a bottle (or two) of fuel dryer, an additive that dilutes the effects of moisture in the gas tank. “Dries” it up in its own way.  And after pouring it into the gas tank, we'dchase it down with premium gas all the way to the top.

Yessss.

Now... we had a plan.

The new plan gave us enough confidence to continue south. Our focus now is whether to do I-5 through the Siskiyous or follow our original plan down the northern California coast.

Aside from that, we’ve got some errands to run here in town. The fuel dyer and premium gas thing, of course. A touch of grocery shopping at Whole Foods. Some ice to refill. In Salem, the massively packed encampments crammed underneath I-5 are called by the Oregon Department of Transportation “Heavy Pedestrian Activity”.

One more time:

Heavy.

Pedestrian.

Activity.

So I learned that today.

3PM

We are totally and comfortably cruising south of Salem under the closest thing we’ve yet experience this year to a summer sun, classic rock rockin’ the Rialta’s sound system.

We are so doing well!

630PM

After a brief stop in Roseburg, Oregon for Dollar Tree supplies, we settled on our route into California: I-5 through the Siskiyous. Now the last time we traveled there was through a snow storm. But I just had a look at the DOT cams and it’s all sunshine and dry roads.

We will, though, have to finish all the fruit we’ve got on board before we get to the check point coming out of the mountains on the other side of the border where they ask whether you’re carrying certain fruits on board.

Hand to God, they actually do this.

Also, Kimmer’s gonna check out the recommendations for staying overnight at that first most northern rest area along that beautiful river and all those trees.

7PM

After a little more thinking about it, we decide to do the Siskiyous tomorrow, settling on that rest area before Ashland as our overnight stopping place.

8PM

We are now officially stranded in Medford, Oregon on the Garden Center side of the Fred Meyer here.

What’s happened is that when we pulled into the Fred Meyer gas station Kimmer noticed the smell of burnt rubber near the rear tires. She immediately got on the phone with her cousin, Derek, who told her to stay put and get help right here in Medford.

So we got on our phones looking for a place to stay or boondock and, since every room in Medford was booked for the night, we determined to boondock at the WalMart Superstore about a mile further down the road.

When I started to drive again, though, there were sounds.

Not good sounds.

Coming from the back of the Rialta.

And that was all she wrote for driving today. Something about the tires. Maybe something about the brakes. Definitely one of the hubcaps appears eaten away around the edges where it hadn’t before. And then those not good sounds. And the feeling of pushing against some kind of weight. Or pulling one. 

In conjunction with the sounds... that was straight up it.

So I pull, painfully, into the nearest parking spot, Kimmer gives Fred Meyer’s customer service a head’s up about being stranded the night in their parking lot, and then we plead our case to AAA of Washington over the phone to upgrade our insurance immediately to include towing an RV.

That’s gonna be first thing tomorrow morning, though. Sunday morning. A time when automotive businesses all across the area seem not to be open.

In the meantime, our plans are blown to bits. Big time. No idea what’s gonna happen, what can happen, unless and until we do the first thing first tomorrow morning which is talking to a Firestone rep at 8AM about seeing if they can possibly help us with what’s happened.

For now, we’re settled on the couches, at the table, in back of the Rialta. We’ve got Phineas & Ferb streaming on Disney+ whilst I write and Kimmer sketches.

Call it some very necessary decompression after a tough few hours.

After that, sleep’ll come super easy. As we leave tomorrow...
