I Think I Can
It was early in 1974 that something happened, something that forever changed my life. It wasn’t an accident or an illness. It wasn’t anything devastating to our family. No, it was a coming-of-age moment in which I realized that I am a collector. It’s in my blood, and they’re in my barn.
I’m talking about my beer can collection, which a cousin introduced to me as a hobby. He seeded my collection with a few of his extras, and once I discovered that the hobby had taken the Midwest by storm and was growing world-wide, I dove in head-first. I quit counting years ago when I exceeded 25,000 different beer and soda cans.
My heirs will be cursing my very existence long after I have gone to that big canning line in the sky.
My hobby has given me countless hours of enjoyment, allowing me to meet many like-minded individuals, as well as seek out oddities as I travel. I am forever bringing home products I found while on the road. But never in these 46 years did I think I would see the day when the beverage industry is reeling from unprecedented demand, and their inability to source cans for packaging.
Of all the things that will be remembered from 2020, one of the biggest and most crippling will be the disruptions caused to our supply chains, particularly for the aluminum can. Taking the hit the hardest is the craft beer industry, which continues to face shortages long after the pandemic started.
Some of the bigger beverage concerns anticipated the problem, and placed orders for cans early. Still, soft drink companies like Pepsi and Coca Cola have been limiting their use of cans to focus on their best-selling brands. Consumer preferences changed as a result of the pandemic, with more people staying home and consuming their beverages there. The companies making the cans, though, were caught unaware and to this day cannot meet demand. Unless a company has connections, they are likely faced with the prospects of a trickle of cans as opposed to pallet-loads.
Further exacerbating the situation is an overall trend that pre-dates the pandemic, that being preferences among brewers and consumers alike for aluminum cans, because they are lighter, cheaper, stack more easily, and can be consumed everywhere, including in boats and arenas. Glass bottles do not have that benefit.
While I have discussed this problem in my classes previously, the problem has become increasingly acute for the smallest producers, simply because they do not have the purchasing clout to muscle their way in to the top of the supply chain. This is unfortunate, because while craft brewers--which now number about 7500 nationwide--amount to 11-12% of beer sales by volume, thanks to their premium prices, they account for 25% of beer sales. That’s a big chunk of the market left searching desperately for containers in which to sell their product.
This is not the first time that supply chain problems have affected the beer industry. During World War II, while beer was canned in olive drab cans specifically for export to our troops in the trenches (they don’t reflect light that way, you know), domestic consumption was all done in bottles. Steel was heavily rationed during the war, and its priority use was for military applications.
But this is not war in the traditional sense, although we are trying to eradicate a very different type of enemy.
All of which means that the mom-and-pop independent brewers are between a keg and a hard place these days, because they may not be able to secure retail distribution. Canning lines are now relatively inexpensive, and many have bought them. Having to pivot on short notice and revert to glass would be costly as well, and once the supply chain gets back on its feet, they would be stuck with bottling lines they really do not want.
In the absence then of aluminum cans, many small breweries are faced with trying to sell beer-to-go in glass or plastic growlers, or, if their state allows it, by-the-drink in their taprooms. That all helps, but being able to sell handy six-packs for at-home consumption, which is what consumers demand right now, it is becoming out of the question for many.
Meanwhile, my beer can collection will no doubt take a little hit for 2020, with fewer releases and therefore fewer shelves to be built. Before 2020, craft brewers were introducing their varietals in cans fast and furiously.
Because the hobby goes on, even after 46 years. I might need another barn one of these days.

Heart Of The Matter
The first craft beer in the US was kegged in 1977. Little did Jack McAuliffe know then that his New Albion Brewing Company was the beginning of a foamy, frothy revolution. While his brewery did not even survive six years, it inspired others to take a chance on brewing beverages that were better than the mass produced brands found in stores and bars.
Today, there are nearly 9000 craft breweries in the US, and the revolution has also spread around the globe. Yes, Big Beer still rules, but they have been put on high alert.
It is no secret that I am a lover of craft beer. I am a self-described beer traveler, and have tasted the brewer’s art at hundreds of breweries across the US. I’ve been collecting breweriana since 1974, and have a massive collection. My big thing right now is collecting the imprinted glass growlers many craft breweries fill and sell as souvenirs.
Big Beer has had to pay heed to this trend, which currently stands at 12.3% market share by volume and 23.6% share by revenue. The disparity reflects the fact that craft beer typically costs considerably more than mainstream beers. Large brewers started responding more than two decades ago by buying out the more successful regional craft breweries, building their portfolio but at the same time, often rolling them into their broader operations and thereby squeezing out the creative juices. It’s a great way to kill good product.
Now comes word that yet another craft brewer has been purchased. Bell’s Brewery in Michigan just sold to Australasian beer company Lion, which is actually a subsidiary of Japan’s Kirin. Founder Larry Bell, who launched the brewery in 1985, is retiring. It is best known for its Two Hearted Ale.
Lion is no stranger to US acquisitions, because it bought New Belgium Brewing Company in 2019, the wildly famous craft brewer with operations in Colorado and North Carolina. Lion can now lay claim to owning the #11 (New Belgium) and #15 (Bell’s) craft breweries in the US.
What makes the most recent acquisitions more palatable for craft beer snobs like yours truly is that the big brewers are now allowing for nearly complete autonomy among their portfolio members. Whereas brands like Goose Island, Karbach, Revolver, Elysian, and others lost a lot of their flavor (truly) once they were consolidated into national operations, we are now seeing corporately-owned craft brands doing just like they always did.
But this time with extensive distribution and stacks of money to use for expansion.
A good example is Terrapin Brewing Company in Athens Georgia, which was purchased by MillerCoors in 2016. I had the chance to query some Terrapin employees not long ago about how things are going five years into the buy out, and they echoed my observations. They continue to introduce new varietals with almost reckless abandon, have added onto the brewery, and now have widespread distribution throughout the southeast US. These are things that would not have been feasible when they were independent.
I have seen the same thing happen with New Belgium. Under their new ownership, they have been able to grow at a 25% clip. Before Lion bought them, New Belgium was known for its signature (and original) Fat Tire Ale, and then a stable full of lesser-known brands. But in recent years they have developed the Voodoo Ranger line of IPAs, continuing to innovate with many different styles within that narrow classification. It is an entirely new brand, something I never saw coming, and it is so successful that it is rapidly replacing Fat Tire as their primary product.
Whereas I would have been scared a few years ago about Bell’s sale, I feel pretty good about this move. Lion has proven itself to be respectful of craft beer and the culture surrounding it. All those previous acquisitions are just examples of square peg, round hole. You have to trim the corners to make it fit, and in so doing, it loses its identity.
I raise my glass to Larry Bell and what he started 36 years ago. Here’s to a happy, healthy retirement. Here’s to the spirit that started this movement in the first place. And here’s to many more pints of Two Hearted Ale.

The craft beer industry evolves seemingly on a hairpin: Beer trends appear as if by magic, from the Brut IPA to the fruited sour; flagships and core ranges fade in favor of new releases; and exciting innovations claim all the attention.
With the steady onslaught of new beer brands and styles unstoppably marching forth, labels only two or three years old — or even two or three months old — can feel dated. In extreme cases, even beers two to three weeks old are deemed past their prime (drink those DDH DIPAs fresh!).
Beers extant for less than a decade thus feel like relics, pre-dating so many of today’s top or trendiest breweries. Top-rated IPAs like Cigar City’s Jai Alia are part of the 1990s-era brewpub’s warn woodwork.
With so many IPAs on the market, what constitutes a classic of the modern era? We asked brewers throughout the U.S. and U.K. what sticks out.
“There are a few IPAs from modern breweries which fit this bill for me, and I’ll keep going back to them time and time again. I’ll mention two of them: Starting closer to home, any IPA by Kernel can be named here. Their IPAs are such a beautiful, pure expression of the hops contained within; the malt bill [is] so clean and precise; the carbonation is so soft and on point… It is so easy to drink glass after glass — a testament to that being that I have zero bottles left out of the 24 I ordered two weeks ago. Further afield, Zote by Calusa Brewing in Sarasota, Fla., is really one of the best examples of New England IPA available in any country. Citra, Mosaic, Cascade, and Centennial are what’s on offer, giving huge juicy citrus with such a soft, silky body it’s far too easy to nail a 4-pack in the Florida sun. We Asked 10 Brewers: Which IPAs Should Be Considered Modern Classics?
The craft beer industry evolves seemingly on a hairpin: Beer trends appear as if by magic, from the Brut IPA to the fruited sour; flagships and core ranges fade in favor of new releases; and exciting innovations claim all the attention.
With the steady onslaught of new beer brands and styles unstoppably marching forth, labels only two or three years old — or even two or three months old — can feel dated. In extreme cases, even beers two to three weeks old are deemed past their prime (drink those DDH DIPAs fresh!).
Beers extant for less than a decade thus feel like relics, pre-dating so many of today’s top or trendiest breweries. Top-rated IPAs like Cigar City’s Jai Alia are part of the 1990s-era brewpub’s warn woodwork.
With so many IPAs on the market, what constitutes a classic of the modern era? We asked brewers throughout the U.S. and U.K. what sticks out.
“There are a few IPAs from modern breweries which fit this bill for me, and I’ll keep going back to them time and time again. I’ll mention two of them: Starting closer to home, any IPA by Kernel can be named here. Their IPAs are such a beautiful, pure expression of the hops contained within; the malt bill [is] so clean and precise; the carbonation is so soft and on point… It is so easy to drink glass after glass — a testament to that being that I have zero bottles left out of the 24 I ordered two weeks ago. Further afield, Zote by Calusa Brewing in Sarasota, Fla., is really one of the best examples of New England IPA available in any country. Citra, Mosaic, Cascade, and Centennial are what’s on offer, giving huge juicy citrus with such a soft, silky body it’s far too easy to nail a 4-pack in the Florida sun.
