I don’t like how in golden kamuy everyone is ripped tbhhh ik it’s bc the authors whole thing is being insane about large men but people like tanigaki and usami and ogata should not have sixpacks TBH.

I think its actually really justified that Ogata has the wound in his right eye. In Ogata's flashback, when Yuusaku is lamenting about Ogata's attitude on war and killing, he hugs him and cries- that tear comes from one eye- the left. Then, on the battlefield, Ogata shoots his brother in the back of the head (and both in this scene and the scene where he's hallucinating and essentially being 'haunted' by Yuusaku's ghost, we see that the blood is (mostly) coming from the empty/blacked out spot in his left eye). Not sure if there's any meaning to that (them being opposite in their ideals and having opposite but similar wounds), just thought it was an interesting parallel, anyway. Especially when you consider Asirpa harbors similar sentiment to Yuusaku, in regards to killing [people].

2023 in anime
i give ratings out of 10 stars based on a rubric that considers the following:
2 points / ambition of what the anime is trying to achieve 3 points / effectiveness of the anime in achieving its aims 4 points / my personal, subjective enjoyment 1 point / pacing +1/-1 miscellaneous
so with that said… ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (2 anime)
revolutionary girl utena – heavy breathing panting crying what a fucking roller coaster nanami the child you are anty the child you were utena the child you choose to be – just one of the true masterpieces of all anime. took a few episodes to realize that this show understood tone and comedy perfectly and wasn’t just a wonky children’s show and by golly! the nanami in season 3 gutted me unlike anything else
attack on titan: final season (for real this time) – decent conclusion to maybe my favorite anime of all time
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (10 anime)
school rumble – so goddamn funny and i cared about every goddamn character. it’s witchcraft!
trigun – good ole saturday morning cartoons
golden kamuy s3 – how does it keep getting better???!?!
fruits basket – i was a certified hater after s1, but slowly but surely i gave into the melodrama. akito and shigure were EVERYTHING
nana – the most disappointing ending of all time! for one of the greatest anime of all time. manga pls save me!!!
rascal does not dream of bunny girl senpai – i’m embarrassed. i cried.
princess tutu – expressionistic, dedicated to storytelling, tremendously kind-hearted. you have to let it move you
blue lock – i’m officially a sports anime girlie
cyberpunk: edgerunners – this was just so slick!
chainsaw man – nothing needs to be said here
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (8 anime)
yamada-kun to lv999 no koi wo suru – adult romance that hasn’t been stripped of all conflict and maintains momentum nearly to the end
oshi no ko – my expectations were non-existent after ep 1 but then it crept up on me. i can’t even fully put my finger on what works so well? but it does! it knows when to take itself seriously and when to be nonsense.
demon slayer s3 – best season of demon slayer to date, i actually cared
durarara!!x2 shou – this is a confession. my inner edgy teen loves durarara. i appreciate huge casts of characters acting in opposition in atmospheric tokyo.
gintama – i finally finished gintama one of my favorites of all time. the end pulls all the threads together but it does so at the expense of the laughs so loses some points
chihayafuru – amazing background anime. just consistently fun and engaging.
perfect blue – i feel stupid and uncultured to not give this a 10
vinland saga – askeladd is so hot wow
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (7 anime)
buddy daddies – funny and sincere in degrees but a truly annoying little girl character
serial experiments lain – god you’ve gotta appreciate the wild swings creatives were taking in the 90s
durarara!!x2 ten
great teacher onizuka – ugh he’s a creep but also heh he’s funny
trigun stampede – they yassified them!
mob psycho 100 s3 - meandered a bit but the characters are forever favorites
to your eternity – the first 3 arcs are extraordinary. march is one of the great child characters of all time. the end drags.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (8 anime)
zom 100 – crazy good first episode that earns its premise and then a slow descent into mediocrity; cool colors though!
terror in resonance – utterly forgettable
dororo – way too long with way too many hit or miss episode arcs
bungou stray dogs s4 – the cracks are showing but the rampo backstory is dope
lycoris recoil – those cute girls shoulda been lesbians
classroom of the elite – is it edgy? yes. are the quotes frustratingly misused? oh yes. is it fun? ugh yeah actually
romantic killer – pretty cute and the edge of danger at the end really sells it
free – solid watch but it left my brain like sand in a sieve
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4 anime)
wolf’s rain – what passes as deep when children are your primary audience
hell’s paradise – boring and i liked the manga so.
durarara!!x2 ketsu – the conclusion falls short
land of the lustrous – bold but was too slow for me
⭐⭐⭐⭐ (3 anime)
tomo-chan is a girl! – sometimes funny but the conceit does not justify 13 episodes and it loses steam fast
mushishi – some of the vignettes were beautiful but felt repetitive
bleach: thousand-year blood war – sleek, hype, plagued by all the old bleach problems
no game no life season 1 - confused that this was such a phenomenon when it came out. it’s fine i guess.
⭐⭐⭐ (5 anime)
kamisama kiss – trite imo
given – god save us from anime about perfect people being perfect with each other – but this time set to music!
tokyo revengers s2 – 🤷
natsume’s book of friends – i don’t need vibes this cozy
sasaki to miyano – and i really don’t need vibes this cozy
⭐⭐ (0 anime)
⭐ (0 anime)
& then ongoing shows that i’m not going to rank until i finish them (but actually all are pretty good so far) – skip to loafer, heavenly delusion, spy x family s2, apothecary diaries, jujutsu kaisen s2, frieren: beyond journey’s end, vinland saga s2

My Top 10 Anime-of-All-Time
I update this list every 6 months or so: 1 Mob Psycho 100 2 Ping Pong the Animation 3 Sonny Boy 4 One Piece 5 Samurai Champloo 6 The Tatami Galaxy 7 Kids on the Slope 9 Golden Kamuy 8 Dorohedoro 10 Space Dandy
The ranking scale in which I rate media is established by these things: 1) Plot & Characters, 2) Music, 3) Animation & Style and lastly 4) what I like to call the zing factor which is just my personal connection with a series. Personal connection is a really vague term, but everything in my top 10 or even in my top 20/30 are shows that mean something to me. There is no way to objectively view or critique anything in media so please understand that- and my number ranking scale is by 11.
I used to keep my rank ONLY for completed series but One Piece and Golden Kamuy (I'm at the start of season 3 currently) have snuck their way into my heart and deserves a place in my top 10 updated before the EOY. My Top 3 have been there for about a year consistently, with the Top 2 for the past 4 years. I have to say Cowboy Bebop was narrowly cut from this list, as it's been in my Top 10 for years now but... I felt there was a need of change (and I have 3 Shinchiro Watanabe picks anyways on it.)
Feel free to comment or talk, I'm just a nerd and alas don't have enough anime friends.

Small ramble moment I’ve often wanted TV shows/ movies/ anime/ games/ ect to be gay- but not about being gay. Just like your generic action or comedy movie where people are gay but its not the plot line. And let me tell you, Golden Kamuy is a great example of what I am looking for  So far (as an anime only viewer- just started the manga) Golden Kamuy never explicitly is gay, but its certainly written by a man who likes/appreciates gay men- Who has done an amazing job writing a tale about the economic and political state of Japan post russo-japan war, while handling strong indigenous characters front and center, a 14 year old girl who is badass but also 14 (not sexual at all AND written strong but still able to make mistakes- ala Full Metal kinda writing), and also creating an ensemble of characters who don't fall in to "good guy bad guy" tropes. And the fan service? All men. You’ll get episodes that really blur the line between what war does to people and the strong bond humans can hold together through it, then you'll get a gag about how all the guys in the group accidentally take an aphrodisiac and start “wrestling” and appreciating each others bodies  It’s such a nice turn, such a well written show that does a great job never making fun of the characters for their gay interactions but actually just treats it like guys being dudes while also weaving an amazing story that makes you care about every single cast member- even the “villains”  Anyhow, if youre looking for something to watch, Golden Kamuy has 3 seasons and just started season 4- and I believe the manga is done

From when the manga ended and I felt nostalgic. I know, morally questionable. That’s what we are. Otherwise we wouldn’t have seen 3 anime seasons and read the manga from start to end.
What were your first 4 images/videos that got you interested in Golden Kamuy?

This is completely random, but I recently started (re-) watching the Golden Kamuy anime on Anix. I've previously watched the first two seasons (which I have on DVD) but I hadn't seen seasons 3 and 4 yet; I guess I kind of forgot about them existing.
Anyway, in season 3, Hijikata Toshizo's group travels to a small fishing village where they encounter an old man with dementia, Doi Shinzo (土井新蔵), who turns out to have been "Yoichiro the Manslayer" in his youth.
Noda Satoru, the mangaka of Golden Kamuy, said that he based Yoichiro's character on Okada Izo, but I guess I never put two-and-two together while reading the manga. (I'll also admit it's been a pretty long time since I read that chapter and it was definitely before Izo started living in my head rent free.)
Noda named the character Doi Shinzo when the real Okada Izo used Doi Tetsuzo (土井鉄蔵) as his alias while he was in hiding. In the anime, he's even using the sword with the dragon tsuba Izo was supposed to have carried. But Yoichiro's character kills more people in the 3 minutes we see him in Golden Kamuy than Izo killed the entire time he carried out assassinations for Takechi Hanpeita (who also has a brief cameo in Yoichiro's arc in Golden Kamuy).

2023 Spring Anime
This season looks whack. There's so many notable series, there's definitely something for everyone this season. Of course starting off with the big ones:
Demon Slayer Season 3 - The Swordsmith Village Arc
Attack on Titan: The Final Season The Final Chapters
Dr Stone Season 3
While those all look amazing and all:
Bocchi is back baby!!!
Tumblr media
Season 2 of Ranking of Kings is back this season. Their story telling is top tier and if you didnt' check out the first season, now is the time to do so.
All these amazing new seasons to look forward to, but this season doesn't stop there, the new series set to debut look absolutely killer too:
Tumblr media
Hell's Paradise gets it's anime release, produced by MAPPA of course. This is definitely my most anticipated for the season.
Followed by MASHLE. While I had fun with the manga, I ultimately couldn't get past the art style. The anime should complete the picture for me and this will definitely be one of the top comedy series this season.
Lastly for the big name debut series: Oshi no Ko
This series takes a second to get into but it's taken the manga world by storm and has already gotten its english translations with only 11 japanese releases so far. The story is definitely worth sticking around for and will likely be one if not the top show of the season.
Tumblr media
Additional continuing series:
Golden Kamuy S4
Edens Zero S2
The Ancient Magus' Bride S2
KonoSuba - Spin Off Series
As for some lesser known series, I've gone through this seasons' release schedule and filtered through the trailers to pick out the ones that might be worth watching... I honestly wasn't expecting for there to be so many. So like I said, there's definitely something for everyone this season.
Tumblr media
Heavenly Delusion
I'm such a sucker for adventure series, throw in sci-fi and I'm hooked. While this definitely gives me Made in Abyss and Promised Neverland vibes, I'm not sure it'll be on the same level.
So far episode 1 looks absolutely amazing. Post-apocalyptic world with the contrast of the two stories, one of kids inside a sanctuary with little outside world knowledge and the kids that live and survive outside. Definitely worth watching.
Tumblr media
A Galaxy Next Door
I'm surprised this is even being aired already. I swear the english volumes for the manga just released earlier this year. I've heard mixed things about the series but I think this'll be worth checking out.
I've heard so much about this series and it's honestly got the golden trio of tags. It's a Slice of life comedy romance and the style and characters are so cute. I'll definitely be giving this a full watch through.
Insomniacs after School
This kind of looks like an irl version of Call of the Night but after watching the trailers a bit more it still looks like a lot of fun. It's about these two students who're unable to sleep and what they do when they stay up. They end up joining the astronomy club and overall it looks like it'll be a really pretty and relaxing series.
Dead Mount Death Play
Most manga collectors will have heard of this series. It's supposed to be quite a decent thriller/supernatural series. While I haven't had a chance to read through it, I think it's about time we got another good supernatural show. I'll definitely be checking it out.
Magical Destroyers
This straight up looks like utter chaos. Whether that's good or not I guess we'll find out. It's under the mahou shoujo tag?? but it's about a radical group that is trying to eliminate the otaku culture from Japan. This guy "Otaku Hero" stands up and tries to stop them. It sounds wild and kind of looks like a passion project. I'll give it 3 episodes.
My Home Hero
This is straight up a western drama movie. Similar vibes to Taken this guy kills his daughters yakuza boyfriend and gets caught up in the criminal underground. It's definitely a new trope for anime so I'll be giving it 5 episodes.
Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury S2
While technically this is a continuation of a series, I feel like many people didn't watch the first half unless they were already into gundam. I never grew up with it and truthfully I just lumped it in with transformers so I never checked it out.
Lots of people have been saying that this reboot it really solid and a good way to get into the series. After watching the trailer I totally understand, the characters all look great and the story looks like a solid sci-fi series. I'll definitely be watching to catch up to the new releases.
Yuri Is My Job
I've head of this series all over the place in the manga world and I know it's one of the more popular shoujo ai. Essentially it seems the plot is that these 2 girls end up working together at a themed cafe and start falling for each other. I don't really have any interest in shoujo ai series (frankly i just started getting into romance series in general) so I'll give it 3 episodes and see how it goes.
The Dangers in My Heart
This is one of those - unlikely mc's gets attention from the pretty love interest. After watching the first episode I can say it definitely isn't the same as the others. The girl is super weird and I like his commentary of all the shit he does. Pretty fun and worth a try at least.
Loving Yamada at Lv999
This looks like a fun lighthearted romance. I'll give it 5 episodes.
Otaku Elf
Pretty much as the title says it's about an Otaku Elf. I think this hoenstly looks like a fun series and as long as you're not looking for more plot, it'll be a good time.
Blue Orchestra
While I think a decent number of people will like the series, I know for sure I'll drop it due to the cgi. I just feel that CGI isn't at the stage where it feels natural enough with the rest of the animations and it really takes away from my watching experience.
My god. I had no clue they redid this but I'll 100% be watching this now lol. They rebooted Tokyo Mew Mew.
This was one of the first anime I watched growing up.
The second season is airing this season - Tokyo Mew Mew New S2
in case anyone else grew up watching it and wats to catch up.
And of course, the isekais.
We've now evolved from just the standard isekais to isekais with a twist.
I Got a Cheat Skill in Another World and Became Unrivaled in the Real World, too.
I'll give it 3 episodes but unsurprisingly I don't think i'll stick with it.
The Legendary Hero is Dead!
This looks a little different from the ususal, I'll give it 3 episodes.
Why Raeliana Ended Up at the Duke's Mansion
This is a full send fantasy shoujo romance and I thought I had had enough of the royal isekai trope but apparently not. The cheese of the romance has sucked me in again with the pretty animations to top it off. I'll be giving it a good 3 episodes.
The Ecchi series for the season:
KamiKatsu: Working for God in a Godless World
This honestly looks like fun but I've had my fair share of this kind of show. This is a fantasy ecchi isekai comedy. I'll still give it 3 episodes.
Megami no Cafe Terrace
Frankly I have no interest in ecchi harem series like this but the quality looks decent so I've added it here for those who want something to watch along those lines this season.
