In addition to the C-390, South Korea will buy more F-35A fighters
In addition to buying Embraer's C-390, South Korea will buy 20 more Lockheed Martin F-35A stealth fighters by 2028.
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 12/04/2023 - 22:33 in Military
South Korea chose the U.S.-based Lockheed Martin Aeronautics F-35A as its stealth aircraft as part of the country's project to introduce next-generation fighters.
The Administration of the South Korean Defense Acquisition Program (DAPA) announced on Monday the decision to bring 20 more units of the F-35A poacher fighters by 2028 as part of the second phase of the country's Fighter eXperimental (F-X) project, which will cost about 4.26 trillion won ($3.3 billion).
The decision comes after the country has already purchased 40 F-35A stealth fighters in the first phase of the FX project, which were fully deployed in January last year.
The stealth fighter is a key military feature of the country's Kill Chain, part of South Korea's Three-axis system, designed to combat North Korea's growing nuclear and missile threats.
This morning, in a surprising move, the South Korean weapons acquisition agency chose the C-390 Millennium, a military transport plane manufactured by the Brazilian aeronautical company Embraer, winning the Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules and the Airbus A400M Atlas.
In the first phase of the FX project, Seoul chose the U.S. four-engine C-130J turboprop military transport plane, which was again expected to be the country's choice in the second phase.
Tumblr media
The country will spend about 710 billion won ($444.3 million) to buy additional military transport aircraft by 2026, according to DAPA.
South Korea, technically at war with North Korea 70 years after an armistice, has been carrying out the project to replace old fighters since 2012, as part of the country's efforts to build the Three Axis system.
The system, introduced in response to the Pyeongyang fifth nuclear test in 2016, aims to defend the country's territory by developing a Kill Chain to preventively attack the source of an attack; intercept incoming missiles using Korea's Air and Missile Defense (KAMD); and employ Korea's Massive Punishment and Retaliation (KMPR) campaign to eliminate the opponent's command and control.
Being one of the three axes of the system, the goal of the Kill Chain is to preventively eliminate North Korea's military threat before the launch of a missile. Stealth aircraft play a key role in the Kill Chain system.
Tumblr media
But South Korea lacks reconnaissance capabilities, so it is buying the stealth jets abroad.
The plans of the fourth and second phases for the mass production of K21 infantry combat vehicles and light attack helicopters (LAH), respectively, were also approved on Monday, according to DAPA.
The K21 infantry combat vehicle was developed by South Korea's national technology to replace the K200A1 infantry combat vehicles.
The country is also developing LAHs with its proprietary technology to replace the 500MD and AH-1S military helicopters, a 5.7 trillion won (US$ 4.4 billion) project that will last until 2031.
Hanwha Systems Co., a South Korean developer of defense and IT systems, is developing and supplying key components, including a target acquisition designation system (TADS) and an electro-optical system that supports reconnaissance and attack missions, for the country's LAHs.

IMAGES: South Korean jet KF-21 undergoes taxi tests, first flight later this month
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 07/10/2022 - 10:28 AM in Military
The KF-21 Boramae fighter manufactured by KAI of South Korea is undergoing low, medium and high-speed taxi tests before its first flight test scheduled for the end of July. New images of the jet have been released.
The prototypes of the KF-21 Boramae fighter have been undergoing taxi tests since June 25, with tests scheduled to be completed by July 13. A taxi test examines the operability and structural solidity of generation 4.5 fighter. This is the last step before a first flight test. The completion of the high-speed taxi tests means that a prototype of the KF-21 is ready for its first flight.
Tumblr media
The taxi test of the first prototype of the KF-21 was first carried out on the runways located inside KAI headquarters in Sacheon City, South Gyeongsang Province.
After the taxi test on July 6, Kim Nam-shin, head of KAI's KFX program management team, confirmed to reporters that the company will conduct a flight test as soon as it completes the verification of the structural integrity of the aircraft and the safety of the components through low, medium and high-speed taxi tests.
The KF-X program consists of two stages over 13 years. The first phase focuses on the development of aircraft and integrated logistics systems between 2015 and 2026. The second phase aims to develop the KF-X's ability to carry out air-to-ground missions between 2026 and 2028.
KAI will begin in-flight testing its experimental prototype KF-21 in the third or fourth week of this month. Starting with a 40-minute test flight expected for this month, KAI will perform 2,200 combined flight tests between July and 2026 with six prototypes of KF-21 fighters. The company has already finished working on four single-seat prototypes, two two two-seat prototypes and two ground test models, the Korea Herald reported.
Flight tests will first check the safety of combat aircraft. The scope of the tests will be gradually expanded to examine altitude, speed, maneuverability, performance and handling in flight, among other qualities. Weapon control systems will also be inspected, including the separation and launch of air-to-air weapons.
The first flight test takes place less than seven years after KAI began developing systems for KF-21 fighters in December 2015.
The KF-21 program also seeks to give the green light to the mass production of the aircraft in the first quarter of 2024, said Colonel Noh Ji-man, who leads the KF-X Program Group in the Administration of the Defense Acquisition Program, on Wednesday during a press conference at KAI Headquarters. "To this end, prototypes of KF-21 fighters must undergo a provisional test to evaluate and measure their operational suitability for combat."
Colonel Noh added that the test will be scheduled for November 2023.
The final and complete evaluation of the operational effectiveness and adequacy of the KF-21 will be carried out in four years, when the first stage of the KF-21 development project should be completed.
The KF-21 will be a 4.5-generation fighter equipped with air-to-air missiles, such as the AIM-2000 from the German Diehl and the Meteor from the British MBDA. It employs several cutting-edge technologies, including an EASA radar that tracks multiple targets with more advanced and efficient components. It also has an infrared search and tracking (IRST) system that detects low-flying targets that emit infrared radiation, including anti-ship missiles.
During the second phase of the project, South Korea will prepare the air-to-surface combat capabilities of the KF-21, including missiles produced by the American Raytheon Technologies, Boeing and General Dynamics, as well as local companies such as Hanwha and LIG Nex1.

Korean shipbuilders seek overseas yards for surging orders | Maritime Union Of India
South Korean shipbuilders are seeking overseas production bases through mergers and acquisitions to meet soaring demand across the world as they have secured works for the next five years.
Hanwha Ocean Co., the country’s No.3 shipbuilder, decided to establish a holding company in the US to acquire shipyards in North America on Nov. 16.
Tumblr media
The company, formerly Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Co., set aside 420 billion won ($321.6 million) for manufacturing bases and stakes in other firms for its defense products when it raised 1.5 trillion won through a rights offering earlier this month. The move aimed at securing docks at home to build vessels with high profitability while producing defense products in other countries.
HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering Co. (HD KSOE), an intermediate holding firm of South Korea’s top shipyard HD Hyundai Co., started considering takeovers of overseas shipbuilders, according to industry sources in Seoul on Sunday.
“We kept the door open for acquisitions of foreign shipbuilders and other measures as we need to compete against Chinese rivals in the long run,” said an HD KSOE executive at an earnings conference call for the third quarter.
