help needed
hi guys. i really hate having to ask this again, but you guys have probably seen us talking about struggling lately and by fucking god have we really been struggling. just to summarize:
my truck broke down in march and i’m struggling to save enough to buy my mom’s car that i’ve been borrowing for 5 months now so that she and my little brother aren’t confined to their home anymore
our air conditioner has broken three times since moving in and we don’t know how many quick fixes it has left in it
related to the air conditioner struggling, our power bill has been consistently over $250 to $300 a month. we live in florida under a monopolized private power company. not running the air conditioner is not an option
our cat callie was recently diagnosed with a grade 4 heart murmur, hyperthyroidism, and kidney and liver issues. she is now on daily medication and will need bloodwork again soon, which is approximately $230 alone, not to mention the cost of her medicine each month
we haven’t had a working oven in over a month and have to pay for a replacement to the control panel.
and now our fucking plumbing is backing up into the house for the second time in two months when we run the water or flush our toilet. there are roots in our sewer line, which is not covered under our home warranty. and even though this was almost 100% an undisclosed issue known by the seller, we have almost nothing we can do. we’ve been quoted $1200-$2400 to fix it, and we have no idea how we’re going to do this.

I'm sick of being called a "consumer."
There's a scene in the beginning of It where the clown keeps trying to convince the boy to take the paper boat from him. When the boy takes the bait he gets grabbed. I'm that kid and I have no choice but to take the dumb paper boat from these clown ass companies who call me a "consumer." The word 'consumer' sounds like I'm eating their product. I'm using it up all at once the way a fire consumes something. They only need me to take it. They don't care about building a relationship with me as a customer. They don't take pride in providing a product worth buying because the product's quality does not reflect on any one person's work ethic or reputation. It's ok if people hate a company with a revolving door of employees. A CEO can always get hired someplace else. If people don't want to do business with a company the company might find ways around that. Oh you don't want to shop for your groceries at the only grocery store in your food desert? Lol. You don't want to ride in a Boeing plane and you even picked out your flight to avoid one? The airline can just switch planes and they've likely overbooked the flight anyway so it would honestly be more convenient for them if you didn't want to use that ticket you've already paid for. Cable and internet providers will make deals with apartment complexes for exclusivity. You bought tools from Sears because of the lifetime warranty on what your dad told you was a quality brand but they moved manufacturing to China with cheap parts years ago and you will be getting that same ratchet replaced over and over with ratchets that are really just the refurbished ones brought in broken from other customers. I can't opt out of the economy. I don't really go anywhere or do anything. I stay home and draw on outdated software with old equipment and listen to Youtube video essays and read webcomics and try to learn languages with freely available tools. I like paying creators directly when I like their work. But even then, I can't opt out of dealing with puritanical payment processors or social media companies that let AI scrapers ravage my work and the work of all the creators I adore before we even get a we-totally-promise-not-to toggle. We're out here getting eaten alive by a system that has stopped shaming us for "killing" industries that priced us out because they found new ways to exploit us.
We're not the consumers, you fuckers are.

More eldritch tech support stories
"Yeah so this God of the Harvest calls about not being able to get to their email right."
"Right..." you say, there's always a danger with sharing stories at work. You never know when your clients are listening and if they'll take offense at you laughing at their expense.
"Like, can't understand any of the questions I'm asking. Do they have internet? Is the computer turned on? All sorts of basic stuff. So then I'm like 'ok click on this thing', and all of sudden they go, 'oh! my email!'. Turns out they were looking at their blank screensaver the entire time."
You snort in laughter, and your coworker lets out a laugh gaffaw, and belly laugh before being cut short. All of a sudden they turned into something resembling a scarecrow, lots of hay and plaid.
"Worth it!" they say as they grab their cup of coffee and awkwardly shuffle off back to their desk.
You roll your eyes and another coworker comes in. "Hey, you busy?"
You shake your head. You've got a thing for The Beings in the Darkness Between the Stars but that's not for a couple of hours.
"I need your help. I have this war demon on the line and her accent is real hard to understand."
"I thought you spoke infernal."
"Yeah but she's got some kind of Ethicurn dialect that I can't penetrate. You speak it, right?"
"Yeah, I'll be right there."
You go to your desk and the phone is lighting up with the waiting call. You put on your headset and take a deep breath. Ethicurn always made your throat hurt and your tongue feel heavy, but what can you do?
The war demon on the line is already extremely upset with you, with your company, with the concept of technology, and possibly also the concept of tech support. You listen patiently to the problem, and understand exactly what happened.
You explain that the technology that she was sold, as per the receipt that you look up, is heat resistant, not heat proof. There's no laptop that you can make that would survive the fires of hell for any length of time. And if she opened a portal to her home near the laptop and the laptop melted, well that's what was going to happen. It looked like she turned down the extended warranty so there was nothing you could do to help.
But that's when things took a turn.
The war demon said that she was not sold a warranty or told what a warranty was. And you saw that the salesperson who initially sold the war demon the laptop was none other than your workplace nemesis, Dave.
You had to make some fairly serious promises to the demon to put her on hold so you could go talk to your boss.
Your boss' door was open and you knock on the frame before entering.
The two headed entity waved you in with one of their three arms. One head and two hands were focused entirely on their computer. The third hand and second head looked up at you from their paperwork.
"What's up?" she asks, taking off her glasses.
"So we have an Ethicurn war demon, with a melted laptop. But she didn't get the extended warranty. So being a demon when it got too close to hellfire it melted."
"Sucks for her," says the second head still looking at the computer. The first head agrees and says, "I don't see why you're coming to me."
"Well she said that Dave didn't explain the warranty or what it would do."
Both your boss' heads frown. "Damnit Dave," says the first. "I'm making a note in his file," says the second."
"And being an Ethicurn demon, and a war aspect at that, if she feels slighted she's going to kill Dave, his family, probably all of his coworkers."
"You think she'll make an exception since I want her to kill Dave too?" asks the first head. The second head shush the first before saying, "Get her a replacement, and stress the necessity for the extended warranty please. I don't care if she kills Dave, but try to keep the rest of us safe."
You nod and go back to the phone. You explain that you are over-nighting a replacement laptop that will be there tomorrow. You also offer a free set up of all the standard programs and things to make sure that the laptop is functioning to the demon's standards. They purchase an extended warranty and you're pretty sure that you're not going to be the target of an Ethicurn War of Vengeance and Petty Slights. But just to be sure you make a note on the file and ask if she wants to speak to Date Recovery to try and get someone to salvage her melted laptop.
You close the case and go back to the break room. You need some tea and honey. As you are soothing your throat after all that infernal, Carol Anne sticks her head in the room.
"Hey, just wanted to let you know that you're schedule take off to the Darkness Between the Stars is going to be ready in an hour."
You nod and give a thumbs up. Best to keep the speaking to a minimum for the time being.
"And hey, while you're out there, if I give you like $50 would you buy me some Dead Star Coffee? There's nothing better than the dark roast from a quantum space singularity where no light can escape."
You roll your eyes but nod.
That coffee does sound good.

It starts with him
What was once a promise of technology to allow us to automate and analyze the environments in our physical spaces is now a heap of broken ideas and broken products. Technology products have been deployed en masse, our personal data collected and sold without our consent, and then abandoned as soon as companies strip mined all the profit they thought they could wring out. And why not? They already have our money.
The Philips Hue, poster child of the smart home, used to work entirely on your local network. After all, do you really need to connect to the Internet to control the lights in your own house?  Well you do now!Philips has announced it will require cloud accounts for all users—including users who had already purchased the hardware thinking they wouldn’t need an account (and the inevitable security breaches that come with it) to use their lights.
Will you really trust any promises from a company that unilaterally forces a change like this on you? Does the user actually benefit from any of this?
Matter in its current version … doesn’t really help resolve the key issue of the smart home, namely that most companies view smart homes as a way to sell more individual devices and generate recurring revenue.
It keeps happening. Stuff you bought isn’t yours because the company you bought it from can take away features and force you to do things you don’t want or need to do—ultimately because they want to make more money off of you. It’s frustrating, it’s exhausting, and it’s discouraging.
And it has stopped IoT for the rest of us in its tracks. Industrial IoT is doing great—data collection is the point for the customer. But the consumer electronics business model does not mesh with the expected lifespan of home products, and so enshittification began as soon as those first warranties ran out.
How can we reset the expectations we have of connected devices, so that they are again worthy of our trust and money? Before we can bring the promise back, we must deweaponize the technology.
Guidelines for the hardware producer
What we can do as engineers and business owners is make sure the stuff we’re building can’t be wielded as a lever against our own customers, and to show consumers how things could be. These are things we want consumers to expect and demand of manufacturers.

1) Control over firmware updates.
You scream, “What about security updates!” But a company taking away a feature you use or requiring personal data for no reason is arguably a security flaw. 
We were once outraged when intangible software products went from something that remained unchanging on your computer, to a cloud service, with all the ephemerality that term promises. Now they’re coming for our tangible possessions.
No one should be able to do this with hardware that you own. Breaking functionality is entirely what security updates are supposed to prevent! A better checklist for firmware updates:
Allow users to control when and what updates they want to apply. 
Be thorough and clear as to what the update does and provide the ability to downgrade if needed. 
Separate security updates from feature additions or changes. 
Never force an update unless you are sure you want to accept (financial) responsibility for whatever you inadvertently break. 
Consider that you are sending software updates to other people’s hardware. Ask them for permission (which includes respecting “no”) before touching their stuff!
2) Do less on the Internet.
A large part of the security issues with IoT products stem from the Internet connectivity itself. Any server in the cloud has an attack surface, and now that means your physical devices do.
The solution here is “do less”. All functionality should be local-only unless it has a really good reason to use the Internet. Remotely controlling your lights while in your own house does not require the cloud and certainly does not require an account with your personal information attached to it. Limit the use of the cloud to only the functions that cannot work without it.
As a bonus, less networked functionality means fewer maintenance costs for you.
3) Decouple products and services.
It’s fine to need a cloud service. But making a product that requires a specific cloud service is a guarantee that it can be enshittified at any point later on, with no alternative for the user owner. 
Design products to be able to interact with other servers. You have sold someone hardware and now they own it, not you. They have a right to keep using it even if you shut down or break your servers. Allow them the ability to point their devices to another service. If you want them to use your service, make it worthwhile enough for them to choose you.
Finally, if your product has a heavy reliance on the cloud to work, consider enabling your users to self-host their own cloud tooling if they so desire. A lot of people are perfectly capable of doing this on their own and can help others do the same.
4) Use open and standard protocols and interfaces.
Most networked devices have no reason to use proprietary protocols, interfaces, and data formats. There are open standards with communities and software available for almost anything you could want to do. Re-inventing the wheel just wastes resources and makes it harder for users to keep using their stuff after you’re long gone. We did this with Twine, creating an encrypted protocol that minimized chatter, because we needed to squeeze battery life out of WiFi back when there weren’t good options.
If you do have a need for a proprietary protocol (and there are valid reasons to do so):
Document it. 
If possible, have a fallback option that uses an open standard. 
Provide tooling and software to interact with your custom protocols, at the very least enough for open source developers to be able to work with it. This goes for physical interfaces as much as it does for cloud protocols.
If the interface requires a custom-made, expensive, and/or hard-to-find tool to use, then consider using something else that is commonly available and off the shelf instead.
5) Be a good citizen.
Breaking paid-for functionality on other people’s stuff is inherently unethical. Consider not doing this! Enshittification is not a technical problem, it is a behavioral one. Offer better products that are designed to resist enshittification, and resist it yourself in everything you do.
Nothing forced Philips to do what they are doing: a human made a decision to do it. They could have just as easily chosen not to. With Twine’s server lock-in, at least we chose to keep it running, for 12 years now. Consider that you can still make a decent living by being honest and ethical towards the people who are, by purchasing your products, paying for your lifestyle. 
We didn’t get here by accident. Humans made choices that brought us to this point, and we can’t blame anyone for being turned off by it. But we can choose to do better. We can design better stuff. And we can choose not to mess things up after the fact.
We’re putting this into practice with Pickup. (We also think that part of an IoT reset is giving users the creative freedom of a general-purpose device.) If you’re looking for something better and our product can fill a need you have, consider backing us. We cannot claim to be perfect or have all of the answers, but we are absolutely going to try. The status quo sucks. Let’s do something about it.
