DA 4 Body Modification Wish List
Since it appears to be Twitter-reveal season and whispers about a new Dragon Age game begin to rise, I wanted to throw in my personal thoughts on some relatively simple improvements pertaining to the body and overall appearance of our hypothetical playable character that could make our role-playing experience much, much better.
First off, the character creator in DA:I was pretty good, so I hope they use that as a starting point rather than whatever that was in Andromeda. It’s absolutely awesome that we can modify so many little details on the Inquisitor’s face, but BioWare, please acknowledge that PCs HAVE BODIES TOO. And those bodies need variety. I’m not suggesting a complicated editor for each body part, but at least a few presets regarding height and athleticism, for example, might be nice. If you’re playing as a two-handed warrior, you might imagine your PC to be big and bulky, probably less so if you play as a lithe, sneaky rogue. Since a mage fights differently, they may come in pretty much any shape possible. Perhaps it wouldn’t be so difficult to have a handful of shapes in mind (not class-based) and allow players to decide for themselves which one suits their character. There’s some choice in Sims, and EA owns both franchises, so maybe you can borrow their know-how?
As a sort of an extension of physical diversity, I’d like to also mention personal style. You know how the same robe makes Dorian look like a Roman general, but turns Solas into a hiker and Viv into a lady of the court? Why does Sera always have cropped leggings? They all have different styles that match who they are. It would be so, so great if there are at least 2-3 general options of the type of “fit” we want for our PC’s clothing. Maybe your PC is a bit of a slob and likes to keep things loose and casual, never wearing their armor quite right. Or maybe your PC loves attention or toying with people for fun, so they wear a fit that makes them feel sexy and powerful. I mean, Morrigan was able to fight off a Blight wearing nothing but a bra and an assortment of belts, so why can’t we?
I get that programming an environment for characters with different shapes would introduce many seemingly unnecessary variables and might be challenging in terms of light, shadows, where other characters look when they’re talking to them, etc. Still, I think the fact that we had some outfit choices in DA:I (and some of the ME games) shows that BioWare cares about players adding their own personal touch to the character’s style. I feel it’s a step in the right direction, though it seems to me that the key to variety is not creating a lot of different items, but focusing on a few that can be worn in more ways than one.
I’d love to hear what other players think regarding this aspect of character customization. I also wonder if anyone’s heard whether BioWare is even thinking along those lines for the PCs in their games in general.
