Newly Emerged Photos Show F-35C’s Mirror-Like Coating with Damaged Tiles After Intensive Testing
Stefano D'Urso
F-35C mirror-like coating damaged tiles
Some previously unseen photos recently emerged online, showing one of the U.S. Navy’s F-35Cs which received a peculiar mirror-like coating. The photos, kindly shared with us by @TimHPatriot, were captured at Midland airport, Texas, in November 2022 and show the F-35C BuNo 168842 parked on the ramp.
The photos, dating back to November 2022, show the second “chrome” F-35C with its peculiar mirror-like coating degraded over time during testing, before the aircraft was returned to its original livery.F-35C BuNo 168842Testing on the aircraft carrier
Notably, the tiles of the coating appear to be heavily degraded or corroded. According to the photographer, the pilot said the coating “were to help with the salty air on the skin, but the tiles kept peeling off in flight.” If the pilot’s explanation was correct, this would be in contrast with one the most likely theory that was shared so far, the reduction of the infrared (IR) signature of the aircraft.
It would make sense for the tiles to peel off in flight if they were not just painted, but applied over the F-35’s paint with an adhesive, similarly to vinyl films which are often used to temporarily apply special markings or liveries to aircraft. As for the salty air, another F-35C with a similar coating was tested aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) aircraft carrier, while the one in the photo and another one were often spotted in the desert environments of Nellis AFB, Nevada, and Edwards AFB, California.
As we reported at the time, the first aircraft to be spotted with the new coating were F-22 Raptors. The F-22’s delicate radar absorbent material (RAM), which requires extensive maintenance to avoid a quick deterioration, was often seen heavily deteriorated, especially on non-combat coded aircraft used in training.
Tumblr media

A U.S. Air Force 422nd Test and Evaluation Squadron’s (TES) F-22 Raptor operational test pilot once mentioned in an interview that the coatings were experimental solutions which were being tested to see if they made it easier to maintain the sustainability and reliability of the aircraft.
This could have very well been the same reason behind the F-35C’s new coatings, making more likely the explanation of the pilot of the aircraft in the latest photos. In fact, during the first operational deployments of the F-35C aboard aircraft carriers around the world, it has been noted that the RAM showed significant wear and tear in the demanding maritime environment, with what appeared to be rusty-looking deposit all across the aircraft.
F-35C BuNo 168842
The F-35C in these “new” photos had been already spotted at Edwards Air Force Base, California, in May 2024. In August 2024, newer photographs provided a better look at its peculiar coating while arriving at Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC) Point Mugu, California. The aircraft is assigned to the U.S. Navy’s Air Test and Evaluation Squadron Nine (VX-9) out of Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake.

The coating was applied to not interfere with access panels, weapon bays, sensor and antenna areas, landing gear doors and so on. Also, it appears that this coating was applied over the standard grey livery of the F-35C and they appearance changes depending on the angle on observation. The tiles have different dimensions and shapes, with some areas showing larger diamond-shaped tiles, while other area have smaller diamond or triangle-shaped tiles.
The F-35C XE-105 is only the latest of many aircraft to be seen with this new mirror-like coating, following two F-22 Raptor and a F-117 stealth fighters that have been spotted flying since November 2021. The layout of the F-35’s coating is similar to what was seen on the F-22, with what appear to be small, mirror-like tiles that have been extensively applied on the nose section, weapons bay doors, fuselage and also inner and outer face of the twin tails.
As for the F-22, the coating has been applied to not interfere with access panels, weapon bays, sensor and antenna areas, landing gear doors and so on. Also, it appears that this coating has been applied over the standard grey livery of the F-35C and they appearance changes depending on the angle on observation. The tiles have different dimensions and shapes, with some areas showing larger diamond-shaped tiles, while other area have smaller diamond or triangle-shaped tiles.
Chrome F-22

Many theories emerged about the origin of these coatings, but without any official confirmation. The most credited ones were testing activities related to counter-IRST (InfraRed Search & Track) technologies or targeting systems, some kind of radar absorbent material (RAM) replacement or a passive laser defense system.
The photos captured at Midland airport might be the last of the aircraft before it was returned to its standard livery. In fact, the airframe 168842 was spotted in early 2023 with the usual grey livery, without the mirror-like coating. The F-35C later changed also its Modex from XE-105 to XE-101, but remained still assigned to VX-9.
It is unclear, however, which were the results of the testing and if it reached its objectives before the coating was removed.
Testing on the aircraft carrier
Another F-35C with a mirror-like coating, this time assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 125, was was photographed during a touch and go on Nov. 30, 2023, on USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72). The aircraft carrier was underway conducting routine operations in the Pacific Ocean, with the “Rough Raiders” of VFA-125, a Fleet Replacement Squadron from NAS Lemoore, California, embarked.

This was the first time, at least to our knowledge, that this exotic scheme of the F-35 was spotted in a carrier environment. This time, however, the coating was not applied extensively as in the other cases, but can be seen only on both sides of the vertical tails and wings, while the fuselage has the standard F-35 coating.
The “chrome” coating alternated dark and shiny patches, making up three larger stripes of different colors. While it was unknown why the new coatings are being used by a FRS on an aircraft carrier, a plausible hypothesis we posited was a test in the harsh maritime environment with aircraft subject to a high volume of flight activity.
Thanks again to @TimHPatriot for allowing us to use his photos!

Excerpt from this press release from the Center for Biological Diversity:
Two federal agencies have confirmed the cancellation of applications for permits proposed a decade ago to drill and frack eight new wells on federal public land in Los Padres National Forest. The announcement, made April 3, comes just weeks after California officials proposed a statewide ban on this extremely dangerous fossil fuel extraction technique.
Together, the two actions signal the end of the toxic era of fracking in the Sespe Oil Field. Fracking has occurred here for decades unbeknownst to the public, but when the polluting practice was uncovered through a series of Freedom of Information Act requests in 2012, a pause in fracking occurred amidst public opposition and an outpouring of scientific studies showing the dangers posed to human health and the environment.
The eight applications refocused the spotlight on the Sespe and the public health and environmental risks posed by fracking.
“This announcement closes the chapter on a toxic and dangerous legacy of fracking in the Sespe,” said Jeff Kuyper, executive director of Los Padres ForestWatch, one of the organizations that mobilized residents to oppose the fracking plan. “While fossil fuel extraction here continues to pose grave dangers to our public lands, communities and climate, today we celebrate this important step forward as we continue the transition to clean energy.”
“I’m relieved that these long-pending drilling and fracking applications have been cancelled, averting a major threat to condors and steelhead,” said Lisa Belenky, senior counsel at the Center for Biological Diversity. “Condors have suffered from oil wells and pipelines in this area in the past and steelhead critical habitat in Sespe Creek is downstream from the oil field, so this is a win for biodiversity. We can’t allow expansion of fracking and other oil and gas extraction on our public lands. Ending fossil fuel production is critical to reducing greenhouse gas pollution and supporting real climate solutions.”
Seneca Resources — a Texas-based oil company — filed the original drilling applications with the Bureau of Land Management in 2013, seeking permission to frack eight new wells in the Sespe Creek watershed along with the construction of nearly two miles of new pipelines, a 12,600-gallon tank, and other industrial facilities in this remote area upstream of the town of Fillmore. Carbon California, a Colorado-based company, eventually took over operation of the Sespe Oil Field.

Tips to Keep Your Car Running Like New

Stay on top of oil changes:Don’t wait until the engine starts knocking. Stick to your manufacturer’s recommended oil change schedule.
Check tire pressure: Low pressure leads to poor fuel economy and increased tire wear.
Replace air filters regularly: A clean filter improves fuel efficiency and engine performance.
Watch your battery: Test it twice a year, especially before the colder months.
Keep an eye on fluid levels: Coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid, and windshield washer fluid should all be checked monthly.
Need help with these tasks? The experts at Advance Auto Parts Ventura are just a phone call or visit away.
Final Thoughts
Your car is more than just a way to get from point A to point B — it's an essential part of your daily life. Trusting it to a team that combines technical expertise, customer care, and high-quality parts ensures that you’ll stay safe and avoid costly repairs down the road.

VX-9 ‘Vampires’ F/A-18F Super Hornet Brandishes Heavy Air-to-Air Loadout During Gray Flag 2024
David Cenciotti
AIM-174
The heavy loadout, featuring four AIM-174s, three AIM-120s and two AIM-9s, first spotted on “Vandy 1” at the beginning of September, was not a one-off test.
In September, we reported on a U.S. Navy F/A-18F Super Hornet from VX-9 “Vampires” showcasing an unprecedented air-to-air loadout, featuring four CATM-174B, three CATM-120, and two CATM-9X missiles, along with a targeting pod and an IRST (Infrared Search and Track) mounted on an external fuel tank. What made the photos taken at Naval Air Station Point Mugu especially notable was that the heavy loadout was carried by “Vandy 1,” BuNo 166673—the flagship of the Vampires squadron. This aircraft sports a unique black livery celebrating the squadron’s 30th anniversary, inspired by the classic livery of VX-4 commander’s F-4s and F-14s, which previously bore the “Vandy 1” callsign.
The heavy loadout, featuring four AIM-174s, three AIM-120s and two AIM-9s, first spotted on “Vandy 1” at the beginning of September, was not a one-off test.AIM-174B
Interestingly, this configuration wasn’t a one-time test. On September 24, 2024, “Vandy 1,” again equipped with the same extensive air-to-air loadout, joined a VX-9 F-35C and a 422nd TES F-15E in a photo session over the Point Mugu Sea Range, marking the conclusion of the Gray Flag 2024 exercise.
Tumblr media
From September 17-23, Gray Flag 2024 brought together U.S. and allied forces, alongside academic and industry collaborators, for a large-scale, joint testing event hosted by Naval Test Wing Pacific and VX-9 at Naval Base Ventura County in Point Mugu, California. This year’s event saw participation from over 3,000 personnel across the Navy, Marine Corps, Army, and Air Force, executing more than 60 test initiatives. With roughly 600 aircraft sorties and more than 26 distinct systems tested on the ground, Gray Flag highlighted the vast scope of multi-domain capabilities under rigorous evaluation. Conducted on the expansive 36,000-square-mile Point Mugu Sea Range, operated by the Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division (NAWCWD), the event used Live, Virtual, and Constructive (LVC) test elements to simulate advanced, multi-domain combat scenarios in a controlled, realistic environment.
“Gray Flag 2024 was an unparalleled opportunity to bring together diverse branches of the military, academic institutions, science and technology experts, and allied forces,” said Capt. David Halpern, Naval Test Wing Pacific commodore.
The range of participants enabled realistic evaluation of system interoperability, informing future requirements and tactics across domains. Importantly, allied involvement was integral to the event, reflecting the coalition-based approach crucial to real-world operations. Rear Adm. Keith Hash, commander of NAWCWD and Chief of Test at Naval Air Systems Command, emphasized that integrating and operating with allies remains a strategic priority:
“The U.S. Navy operates within a global warfighting ecosystem. To deter aggression and uphold freedom of the seas, we need to test alongside our partners, just as we operate with them.”
AIM-174B
As we’ve detailed in recent months, the AIM-174B missile is a variant of the Standard Missile 6 (SM-6) repurposed for air-to-air engagements. Originally designed as the RIM-174 Standard Extended Range Active Missile (ERAM), the SM-6 serves as the U.S. Navy’s primary long-range anti-air and anti-missile defense solution, integrated with the Aegis Combat System on Navy vessels.
The SM-6 ERAM is a key asset in the Navy’s long-range air defense strategy. Derived from the RIM-156A SM-2ER Block IV airframe and equipped with an active radar seeker from the AIM-120 AMRAAM, the SM-6 is capable of reaching Mach 3.5 and has a range of 200 nautical miles in its ship-based form.
While traditionally ship-launched, the SM-6 has been tested in air-launched configurations as early as 2018 and again in 2021 on other VX-31 Super Hornets, but only this year has its deployment accelerated, with further involvement from operational units.
In April 2024, an F/A-18 was spotted carrying the AIM-174, then, on Jul. 2, 2024, an F/A-18E Super Hornet belonging to the VFA-192 “Golden Dragons” was photographed taxiing at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, carrying two AIM-174B missiles marking the first appearance of the missile on a frontline platform during RIMPAC 2024. At the beginning of September, images of VX-9’s Super Hornet carrying four AIM-174s mounted on both inner and middle hardpoints, along with AIM-120s set a new benchmark for its air-to-air load capacity. Additionally, the ASG-34A IRST integrated on the fuel tank complemented the Super Hornet’s radar, providing advanced tracking capability in electronic warfare or radar-denied settings.
While details on the air-launched AIM-174B’s maximum range remain unclear, it is likely to exceed the surface-launched version when launched at altitude and speed, positioning it among the longest-range air-to-air weapons in the U.S. inventory and filling the void left by the retirement of the AIM-54 Phoenix.
Officially acknowledged in July as operationally deployed with CVW-2 aboard the USS Carl Vinson, the AIM-174B’s availability in IOC (Initial Operating Capability) extends the U.S. Navy’s reach in long-range engagement. Although publicly seen with only inert and training versions, live missiles are likely already available in the fleet.
As we explained in a previous post:
With the induction of the AIM-174B into service, the U.S. Navy joins a number of air arms capable of deploying an extra-long-range beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile (BVRAAM), like the MBDA Meteor, the Russian R-37M and Chinese PL-15 and PL-21. In fact, the AIM-174B enables the U.S. Navy Super Hornets to engage targets at much greater distances than is currently possible with the AIM-120 AMRAAM. Integrated with the E-2D, F-35, and AEGIS within the Naval Integrated Fire Control-Counter Air (NIFC-CA) system, the AIM-174B would extend the Navy’s capability to intercept aerial targets at ranges comparable to (if not greater than) those achieved against naval targets using the baseline SM-6.
In essence, this new missile fills the gap left by the retirement of the AIM-54 Phoenix. The AIM-54 was a long-range air-to-air missile used by the U.S. Navy’s F-14 Tomcat and retired in 2004 alongside the F-14. Known for its impressive range of over 100 nautical miles and multiple-target engagement capability, the AIM-54 left a significant void in long-range engagement capabilities.
While there wasn’t a direct replacement for the AIM-54 Phoenix in terms of range, the U.S. military has been developing advanced air-to-air missiles to enhance its fighter aircraft capabilities. The AIM-260 Joint Advanced Tactical Missile (JATM) is one such development intended to replace the AIM-120 AMRAAM. Although not a direct replacement for the AIM-54 Phoenix, the AIM-260 aims to offer improved range and performance compared to the AIM-120.

Excerpt from this press release from the Department of the Interior:
The Department of the Interior today announced a $125 million investment for five projects in California and Utah that will help create new sources of water and improve drought resiliency.
These investments support the Department’s new Large-Scale Water Recycling Program, launched in 2023 with new funds from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The new program incentivizes conservation projects at a larger scale, with no cap on project size, and will play an important role in helping communities develop local, drought-resistant water supplies by turning unusable water sources into clean, reliable ones.
President Biden’s Investing in America agenda represents the largest investment in climate resilience in the nation’s history and is providing much-needed resources to enhance Western communities’ resilience to drought and climate change. Through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, Reclamation is investing a total of $8.3 billion over five years for water infrastructure projects, including rural water, water storage, conservation and conveyance, nature-based solutions, dam safety, water purification and reuse, and desalination. Since the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law was signed in November 2021, Reclamation has announced more than $3.5 billion for more than 530 projects.
The projects selected are:
$60.4 million for the City of San Buenaventura’s Ventura Water Program. It is estimated to produce 3,600 acre-feet of recycled water annually.
$30 million for the Los Angeles Groundwater Replenishment Project. The project is estimated to produced 26,000 acre-feet annually.
$26.2 million for the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California Pure Water Southern California. The project is estimated to produce 118,590 acre-feet annually.
$10.8 million for the Inland Empire Utilities Agency of California Advanced Treatment of Recycled Water to Enhance Chino Basin Resiliency Project. The project is estimated to produce 15,000 acre-feet annually.
$641,222 for the Washington County Water Conservancy District, Utah’s Regional Reuse system, which is estimated to produce 28,373 acre-feet annually.

Timeless and Tough: Why Tile Roofing Is a Smart Upgrade for Today’s Homes
Tumblr media
Tile Roofing Brings Unmatched Durability
Tile roofing is a top choice for homeowners seeking a durable, long-lasting roofing solution. Designed to handle extreme weather—from heavy downpours to scorching sunlight—tile roofing acts as a reliable barrier that can shield your home for decades.
Extended Lifespan Makes Tile Roofing a Worthy Investment
One of the greatest advantages of tile roofing is its remarkable longevity. When properly maintained, it can perform effectively for over half a century. Its extended service life helps homeowners avoid frequent roof replacements and enjoy long-term security.
Increase Property Appeal with Tile Roofing
Installing tile roofing can enhance a home's market value. Its sophisticated look and lasting performance appeal to prospective buyers and add to a property's overall curb appeal. Tile roofing sends a strong message of quality and architectural taste.
Tile Roofing Supports Energy Efficiency
Thanks to its natural insulating abilities, tile roofing helps regulate indoor climate conditions. It minimizes heat gain in summer and heat loss in winter, lowering the need for HVAC usage and making the home more energy-efficient.
Enjoy Hassle-Free Maintenance with Tile Roofing
Tile roofing is a low-maintenance system that resists fire, pests, and decay. Its tough composition means fewer issues over time, and with occasional inspections and minor fixes, it remains in excellent shape with little effort.
