Ibague Ch F: Alvaro Guillen Meza [4] def. Facundo Mena [5] 6-0, 6-4 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
The last two rounds alone proved how A. Guillen Meza had solid, aggressive return approach not only to out-pace and overpower the opponent, but also to deprive them from shot options. This was the case for F. Mena, as he was unable to keep up with the rhythm back in the first set, and despite some fair chances in the second set, he was unable to attack the former's baseline position, which was also credits to his anticipation and powerful groundstrokes. Added with some shot accuracies, F. Mena's choices became limited, thus the ubiquitous error sprees in the crucial moments. As a result, F. Mena was unable to convert his sole break point from the second set, while A. Guillen Meza converted 80% of his 5 break points throughout the match, asserting his dominance through his strong play.
Besides, A. Guillen Meza's masterclass was also proven from his serves. Scoring 3 aces than F. Mena's 1, the former had an exceptional first serve winning percentage at 85%, 38% more than the latter, which helped him more in times of trouble as F. Mena had difficulties to land his first serves. In contrast, even if A. Guillen Meza double-faulted 5 times, F. Mena's frequent errors as his rushing tendencies increased, including when he was completely outplayed in the first set, slightly faded his second serves 3% below A. Guillen Meza, who won 41% of his second serves thanks to his aggressive follow-ups.
This marked A. Guillen Meza's second Challenger-level title without dropping more than 5 games each match, after winning last year's Lima 1 Challenger title, propelling his rank to 240 live to put himself closer to the US Open qualification rounds range. Continuing the grind next week, the Ecuadorian will partake in the Troyes Challenger as he will face Nicolas Alvarez Varona in the first round. On the other hand, this runner-up run returned F. Mena to 261 live, where his first Challenger title after a long time still has to wait. Still, what a moment for both players at their respective stage of their careers.

Cultura envidiosa

F. Mena tried to raise his game in the second set, but A. Guillen Meza was proven too solid as he stayed in his range. The former's efforts started with his forehand winner in the third game to force the deuce, with another one that got the latter run over generated his break point. However, it was fumbled, and the Ecuadorian fifth seed closed that game with a massive hold to 2-1. This was also the case in the next game, as he equalized the score through a rare jumping backhand winner, but A. Guillen Meza still held that game to 2-2.
It took several games later before F. Mena pulled all the tricks, from a drop shot, to a smash, until a forehand winner to create his game point, but A. Guillen Meza's forehand return, which turned out to pass the let cord and went in as if it was a lob, neutralized it before it became a deuce, even though the Argentinean fifth seed held that service game to 4-3. Somehow, A. Guillen Meza carried this on with a service game hold to 4-4.
Subsequently, as A. Guillen Meza got more aggressive, F. Mena's balance started to be questioned. Double-faulting somewhere at the start of the game, the fifth seed overdid his forehand for the fourth seed's one-point lead, which was almost similarly the cause of the break point creation. Without any further hesitation, the Ecuadorian broke to 5-4 due to F. Mena's volley error to A. Guillen Meza's preceding volley, which allowed the latter to serve for the match. Using his more reliable service game, A. Guillen Meza sealed the match with an ace, taking the second set 6-4 to finally win a Challenger title this year.
