Why isn’t mass media more neutral?
Disclaimer: I’m not taking any sides here, nor am I provoking any of you to say it, but this has been on my mind quite a bit and I feel like saying it now: Honestly saying, I’ve always felt like the media favours Palestine over Israel way to much even tho media is supposed to be neutral.
Essays in exams, front pages of newspaper, stars on social media always talk about Palestine but seem to be painting a rather black and white “Palestine good Israel bad” picture but never seem to be willing to dwell deeper into the topic, and when they they go somewhat below the surface it’s always from Palestine’s perispective only, nothing explaining Israel’s side of story as passionately even if at all. Even in India vs Pakistan wars, you’ll find motives and aggressions from both sides easily enough if you looked.
“Stars” like Bela Hadid raise slogans demanding Israel’s dissolve under the ruse of Palestine’s independence and no one bats an eye. The founder of Human rights watch left the organisation saying that it was being biased towards Palestine and has forgotten its original purpose. A lot of funding of these pro palestine news channels comes from Pro Islamic nations organisations, most of the said countries being Palestine supporters.
Palestine is suffering, yes, but it’s not just Israel that’s making it suffer. Hamas has a major role to play too. It kills its own civilians more than Israel does. Palestine has seen some serious bloodshed since Hamas came into power but no one seems to focus on that. There’s little to no discussion about how Palestine is bleeding internally due to hamas, but only the stuff that can be used against Israel.
You’ll hear about how Israel “attacked” Gaza and most of the times it turns out to be some retaliation. We always hear about civilian deaths whose names are never revealed but no one ever wonders what civilians were doing around militant bases. We talk about how palestinians are being thrown out of Israel to show them as big aggressors and it turns out that the land was originally Israel’s territory to begin with.
I’m not being pro-Israel here, And I very well admit that it can have its fair share of violations, such as killing of the one Al-Jazeera reporter , accident or not (look, I fucking hate that platform but that doesn’t mean I condone killing of someone who didn’t do anything) but this is something that has always made me curious. It can’t be as simple as “Israel evil”, can it?

This two-day event at ODM Global School, Bhubaneswar, welcomed over 400 delegates from 26 schools across India, Argentina, Kenya, and Uganda, who participated both online and in person and engaged in thought-provoking discussions on critical global issues.
Tumblr media
The opening ceremony on September 20, 2024, was a vibrant celebration featuring a warm welcome address, the introduction of international delegates, and the presentation of the executive board members from 11 committees. The event featured notable speakers, including Mr. Alexander McLaren, Public Affairs Officer at the U.S. Consulate General in Hyderabad, who delivered a compelling address on the importance of international diplomacy and the need for global understanding among today's youth. The conference covered a wide range of pressing global issues, including nuclear proliferation, child malnutrition, tensions on the Korean peninsula, the Middle East situation, Sudanese refugees in Ethiopia, digital safety for women, and the right to a healthy environment. These discussions encouraged delegates to critically reflect on their roles in addressing these challenges. A highlight of the event was the active participation of 50 students from Starehe Boys' Centre in Kenya, whose valuable perspectives enriched the online committees. Additionally, the cultural Exchange students from Lubiri Secondary School, Uganda, attended in person, fostering cross-cultural dialogue and international camaraderie.
Following the opening ceremony, a plenary session and thought-provoking podcast featured Dr. Sugata Roy, UNICEF Specialist in Advocacy, and Samar Pratap Nayak, Founder of Olive Ridley Media, who shared insights on UNICEF's impact in Odisha and youth engagement with the UN.

The second day of ODMMUN 2024 featured the much-anticipated Global Village, an interactive showcase of cultural diversity where delegates presented exhibits representing their respective countries. This session facilitated cultural exchange and deepened international understanding. Students from Lubiri Secondary School delivered a captivating presentation on Uganda, while Lourdes Alejandra Santillán from Argentina shared insights on her homeland, enriching the experience for all attendees.
Delegates engaged in informal discussions during a networking lunch, forging lasting connections that extended beyond the conference. The afternoon included intense committee proceedings and a comprehensive debriefing, where delegates reviewed their resolutions and reflected on the outcomes of their discussions.
The event concluded with a grand Closing Ceremony featuring a closing address by the Deputy Secretary General. Mr. Mulindwa Musaka Sammy, a renowned global educationalist and Chairman of the Board of Governors for Secondary Schools in Uganda, emphasised the vital role of education in shaping future leaders. A cultural performance by students from Lubiri Secondary School celebrated Uganda's rich heritage, adding a vibrant touch to the proceedings.  In recognition of outstanding contributions, Mr Musaka Sammy and Dr Minaketan presented awards honouring the hard work and dedication of all delegates. Indian dance forms, with their intricate movements, expressive gestures, and vibrant rhythms, offer a unique blend of physical exercise, cultural education, and artistic expression. Whether you're a complete beginner or aspiring to become a pro, mastering the art of Indian dance is a rewarding endeavor that enriches both the mind and body.
The Diverse World of Indian Dance
Indian dance encompasses a wide variety of styles, each with its unique characteristics and cultural significance. From the classical dances like Bharatanatyam, Kathak, and Odissi to the more contemporary Bollywood and Bhangra styles, there is something for everyone. Here’s a brief overview of some popular Indian dance forms:
Bharatanatyam: Originating from Tamil Nadu, Bharatanatyam is known for its fixed upper torso, bent legs, and intricate footwork, combined with expressive hand gestures and facial expressions.
Kathak: Hailing from North India, Kathak involves storytelling through dance, with fast footwork, spins, and expressive gestures.
Odissi: From the state of Odisha, Odissi features fluid movements, intricate gestures, and expressive storytelling.
Bollywood: A more contemporary and energetic dance form, Bollywood combines various styles and is characterized by its lively and vibrant moves.
Bhangra: A folk dance from Punjab, Bhangra is energetic and joyous, often performed during celebrations.
Starting as a Beginner
As a beginner, the key is to choose a dance form that resonates with you. Here are some steps to get started:
Find the Right Class: Look for reputable dance schools or online platforms offering Indian dance classes. Ensure that the instructors are experienced and the class environment is supportive.
Learn the Basics: Focus on mastering the basic steps, rhythms, and hand gestures. Understanding the foundational movements is crucial for progressing to more complex routines.
Practice Regularly: Consistency is key. Regular practice helps in muscle memory development and improves coordination and flexibility.
Understand the Culture: Indian dance is deeply rooted in cultural traditions. Learning about the history and significance of the dance form you choose will enhance your appreciation and performance.
Advancing to Intermediate Level
Once you have a grasp of the basics, it’s time to move to the intermediate level. Here’s how you can elevate your skills:
Refine Techniques: Focus on refining your techniques. Pay attention to details such as hand gestures (mudras), footwork, and facial expressions (abhinaya).
Learn Choreographies: Start learning and performing more complex choreographies. This will help you understand how different movements flow together and improve your performance skills.
Increase Stamina: As the routines become more challenging, it’s important to build your stamina. Regular cardio and strength training exercises can complement your dance practice.
Perform: Participate in small performances or recitals. Performing in front of an audience boosts confidence and provides valuable feedback.
Becoming a Pro
Reaching a professional level in Indian dance requires dedication, passion, and continuous learning. Here are steps to achieve mastery:
Advanced Training: Enroll in advanced classes and workshops. Learning from various gurus (teachers) can provide different perspectives and techniques.
Choreograph Your Pieces: Start creating your choreographies. This not only enhances creativity but also deepens your understanding of the dance form.
Teach: Teaching others is a great way to reinforce your knowledge and skills. It also provides a sense of accomplishment and contribution to the cultural heritage.
Participate in Competitions: Engage in national and international dance competitions. This exposure helps in networking with other dancers and learning new trends.
Cultural Immersion: Spend time in regions where your chosen dance form originates. Immersing yourself in the local culture can provide invaluable insights and inspiration.
