The General (1998) d. John Boorman

This is a biopic of maverick Dublin crime lord Martin Cahill, who pulled off two daring robberies but came into conflict with members of his own gang and attracted attention from the police and the IRA. Ultimately though it was his dealings with the UVF that led to his downfall. It’s based on a book by journalist Paul Williams. In this scene, Cahill has been sent to a reform school as a boy after being caught stealing. The school is run by the Christian Brothers who oversee a brutal regime of beatings, humiliation and abuse.

A nine-year investigation into Ireland’s Roman Catholic-run institutions in the 2000s found that priests and nuns had terrorised thousands of boys and girls in workhouse-style schools for decades, and that government inspectors failed to discover what was happening. More than 30,000 children deemed to be petty thieves, truants or from dysfunctional families were sent to Ireland’s austere network of industrial schools, reformatories and orphanages from the 1930s until the last church-run facilities shut in the 1990s.

In this early scene Cahill and the other boys in his dormitory (twelve are shown on-screen) have been told to bend over the end of their beds and lift their nightshirts to present their bare backsides for belting. It seems they have to stay in this humiliating position until every boy has been lashed. They aren’t being punished for any particular wrong-doing and it’s clear that this is a regular nightly occurrence. Nightshirts were positively Victorian by 1962, so the inference is that such attire made abuse easier and, indeed, we see this in a later scene. The priest has obviously taken a liking to Cahill and chooses not to belt him; instead, he returns to molest him when the other boys are sleeping but Cahill is able to fight him off.

The film features a number of well-known actors including Brendan Gleeson, Adrian Dunbar, Maria Doyle Kennedy and Jon Voight. Cahill as a boy is played by Eamonn Owens, who was around 14 at the time. Donncha Crowley plays the priest.

It looks like five of the boy actors are belted bare for real; a sixth is heard being lashed off-screen. I thought maybe a plastic strap and sound effects had been used but two of the boys' buttocks are clearly indented when the belt hits them, one in close-up, and all the boys' jumps and yelps as they are lashed seem very convincing. John Boorman is renowned for getting his actors to perform their own stunts, so I suppose this is just more of the same. Goodness knows what casting director Jina Jay told their parents, but I hope the lads were well paid for their efforts. Realising it's being played for real certainly adds an extra frisson to the scene. It’s Kes (1969) all over again, isn’t it.

Although shot in colour, the theatrical release of the film was presented in black-and-white for artistic reasons. A colour print was subsequently made available for television broadcast and home video. There was some Oscar buzz when the film was released but this ultimately didn’t materialise.

Clara moved to Korea when she was seventeen (about to be eighteen.)

When she was coming to Korea a lot and learning how to make music, she lived with Jay and his parents (because Jay lives with his parents.) Occasionally she’d stay at Simon and Ly’s house. (Jay’s parents think of Clara as their grandchild 😭😂)

When she was eighteen, Clara and Star moved into an apartment together in Hongdae. Sometimes Jinae would stay with them, Felix and Melody both had the PIN codes to the apartment too. Unfortunately, they had a crazy fan break into that apartment once.

When Clara was nineteen, she bought a house. Not a little house either, it’s like a whole three story house with a basement and a pool. Which is where she currently lives, with Star and Jinae moved in too.

Y/n's POV:

Currently, I'm on a bus to jeju island, waiting for all my classmates to board the bus. We were going to Jeju island for a school trip. Yeah classic. But, going on vacation and stuffs like that are not really my type. I prefer to stay at home watching netflix or reading some good novels. Then you might think as to why I am here.....well, actually my best friend Jina, dragged me to this trip, like literally. Why? Because her crush Sunghoon is going on the trip. I saw Jay boarding the bus, He is one of the richest students in the school, so he had only a few friends whom he trusts and believes.

I have never seen him date any girl despite his Playboy look. I secretly had a teeny weeny crush on him which I never disclosed to anyone. Even Jina doesn't have any idea that I like Jay. I manage to make it a well kept secret which is known only to me and no one else. We made an eye contact briefly before I decided to quickly turn my eyes away from him. The bus started and put my earphones on and presented that I was in a freaking music video as I admired the natural scenery passing by outside the window. The journey came to an end after hours of travel and we all got off of the bus and went to the rooms allocated to us by the homeroom teacher. I shared my room with Jina and some other girls from my class. The hotel was located near the beach so, the view looked really pretty. Oh how I wish I could just sit here and enjoy without having to go out and socialise? But we'll guess who is dragging me outside now? Yep, none other than Jina. She dragged me out to the beach side and saw some guys from our class playing in the water. Now I know why she desperately pulled me out of the room. Sunghoon was here, playing among the students. She kept on rambling about how hot Sunghoon was but my eyes were only fixated on one person, Jay.

Soon it was time for dinner, after we filled our stomach with some yummy foods I decided to just go back to the room but Jina didn't let me," where are you going? I heard they set a campfire next to the lounge. Let's go there"she exclaimed and begged me cutely. Well one can never say no to a cute lady..."okay but only for few minute" I said. I expected it to be crowded but guess everyone left to sleep as they were tired from the travel. Only Sunghoon's group and some other few students were there. Now I know the intention behind why Jina dragged me here and this is the second time I'm getting fooled by her cuteness today. "Hey can you guys join us for a game?" Heeseung asked us. I wanted to refuse but- "of course" Jina happily joined them dragging me down with her again. I sat next to Jungwkm,"so what game are we playing?" Jay asked. He looked kind of bored and not interested.

"So let's spin the bottle and whoever it points to has to play Pepero game with the person on the other side of the bottle" Ni-ki said and wiggled his eyebrows like a evil person. Everyone cheered hearing his idea while I wondered where he gets these weird ideas from. Sunoo spun the bottle first, it stopped in front of Heeseung and Sunoo(👀) they managed to complete the game without any mess(a.k.a lips touching). Next, the bottle pointed on Sunghoon and Jina, we all cheered loudly for them, it was so funny watching Jina flustered. The game went on and it was happy and fun until the bottle stopped infront of me and... Jay. I was clearly nervous when he approached me with the Pepero stick. The game started and he didn't make any efforts to move forward so I did. I looked at his eyes but he was clearly not interested at all.

This broke my heart for some reason. So, I just backed away from the game even when the Pepero stick was not even half completed. "I don't think Jay likes this. So, let's finish it here....please excuse me I have to go somewhere" I told them and walked away from the campfire and went to the beach alone. I sat there crying in silence looking at the sea. Someone sat next to me but I didn't mind since I thought it'd probably be Jina. "Why are you crying?" Once I heard his voice I thought I was dreaming until I turned towards him and made eye contact. "What are you doing here Jay?" I asked him which he replied with, "Look you make it look like I made you cry. So my friends compelled me to console you" he said with straight face. Yeah right, why else would he come here?, "I need some time alone" I said and stood up from there realizing he's not gonna go away from there. "Wait...sit here" he said holding my hand "I'm not your dog to do as you say" I snapped at him. "Please" he made those puppy eyes. Did he learn that from Jina? "Ugh fine, just for few minutes" I sat down again next to him, looking at the sea.

"Do you know why I don't date anyone...? It's because my family forbid me to do so" he said now looking at me. I felt sad for him, "but why are explaining it to me?" I asked him. "It's just I like someone.... I can't express it to her. So, I wanted someone's opinion. You just happened to be here" I felt my heartbreaking. Even though I know he's out of my range, I had a small hope that he looked at me as more than just a classmate when he explained about his family to me but guess not and also he likes someone else. It hurts to know that I am not the favourite person of my favourite person. "If you like her, then just man up and tell her. No family would want to destroy their own children's happiness" I said to him sadly. "Then can I do it now?" He asked bluntly,"go on and tell her. Good luck" I told him and turned away sadly, "I love you" he told loudly and I looked at him weirdly "not here. To the girl you like, stupid Jay" "yeah, that's what I'm doing, I love you, Y/n" he confessed and I can see that he meant it through the look in his eyes. "You never spared a glance at me and you looked so irritated during the Pepero game only to say you love me?" I asked him crying out of happiness (lol) I just want to scold him a little for being so cold to me. "Y/n, it's okay if you don't like me....please don't cry" he said kind of sad and gently wiped the tears out of my eyes. I giggled at him slightly and pushed his shoulder, "now who said I don't like you" he looked at me surprised, "t-then do you like me?" he asked and I nodded.

He pulled my head towards his face and asked "Can I?" To which I nodded my head shyly and the next thing I knew was he kissed me on the lips. I was a bit shy due to our sudden closeness, but kissed back in few seconds. He pulled away slightly and smiled at me. "I love you y/n" "I love you too Jay" he kissed me again but we were interrupted by loud whistling and cheering noises. We turned around to look at his friends and Jina cheering for us. "Did you guys decide to continue your Pepero game alone?? without us??" NiKi teased us and we both flustered like a tomato.

it was noon and everyone was at the house, waiting for yeeun to finish cooking lunch as she had volunteered to cook. meanwhile, sunghoon prepared the table and called everyone to eat.

“she looks like an actual chef,” jay stated, looking at how yeeun skillfully cuts the vegetables and meat. though, he didn’t want to back down because he’s a good cook himself.

“here, i’ll help with the rest. you can wash your hands and sit.” he said with no hesitation. everyone was impressed by his slight dominance and cheered him on.

“you should’ve started with jay park in the house, instead of sunghoon.” yura said, laughing at sunghoon. at that time, he was setting up the utensils so he jokingly made a stabbing motion towards the girl.

“stop teasing me!” he half-begged while still focusing on the table. with that, the food was finished and they all sat down to eat.

yura wanted to sit next to heeseung but it seemed like the seat was already taken by jina so she acted like nothing happened and sat next to jay.

“sunghoon is proving to be very easy to make fun of.” heeseung stated while munching on his food.

"Clara!"

Tripping and falling face first into the dirt, Clara groaned as she sat up, glaring at her parents. Ly and Simon both looked at Jay and Kyoko, the witch waving her hands softly.

"You're not getting out of this," Jay stated.

"Remind me why we have to host a bunch of wolves and shit?" Clara grumbled as she stepped next to Ly, the scratches on her face already healing.

"It shows that we're apart of the alliance, we are the head pack of the Western Territories," Simon explained, "This will also be the first event that the YG pack is attending in ten years,"

"The YG pack?"

Clara cleared her throat before rushed footsteps sounded, making her turn quickly. A body collided with her own, making her land on her back with a loud thud.

"Clara!"

"Get off her, you idiot!"

Jinae showed up next, quickly grabbing her former pack mate and dragging him off Clara. The young alpha stood up, groaning softly before two loud growls made the air vibrate.

"Who the fuck are you?" Jay snarled.

"Ah shit-"

"I'm her mate!" Bobby announced.

Clara and Jinae shared a look.

"Mate?!" Simon growled, "What?"

Clara and Jinae looked between each other, struggling to find words.

"When the hell did this happen?" Jay looked at Clara.

"Um, like, a year ago?" Clara spoke quickly, "It's not a big deal, you know-"

"Not a big deal? You finding your mate means you can take the alpha position!" Simon lectured, "This isn't something you keep from us!"

"You need to take this seriously, Clara, you aren't a pup anymore!" Jay lectured further.

Growling, Clara bit back, "What does having a mate have anything to do with being the alpha of the pack?! I can lead without a mate!"

Before Simon or Jay could talk, Ly stepped between the two groups.

"Enough," Ly spoke calmly, "We have a festival to hold, now isn't the time for arguments,"

Kyoko nodded in agreement, "We can discuss this later,"

As the two alpha couples walked away, Clara kicked the dirt. Jinae frowned, shoving her hands in her jumper pockets.

"Are you alright?" Bobby asked, "Is this why you said to wait?"

Jinae spoke, "There's a lot of politics at play, Bobby,"

"There's also a lot of people against a female taking the alphas title," Clara stated.
